Argemone mexicana L. has been used in traditional Mexican medicine. Among its bioactive constituents, berberine (BER) has garnered attention for its cytotoxic properties against different tumor cell lines. This study investigates the in vitro toxicity against HEP-G2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) and murine lymphoma (L5178Y-R) cells using the MTT assay of the methanol extract (AmexM), sub-partitions of A. mexicana, and BER. Selectivity indices (SIs) were determined by comparing their cytotoxic effects on VERO (monkey kidney epithelial) and PBMC (human peripheral blood mononuclear) non-tumoral cells. Additionally, the anti-hemolytic effect of these treatments was assessed using the AAPH method. The treatment with the most promising activity against tumor cells and anti-hemolytic efficacy underwent further evaluation for toxicity in Artemia salina and antioxidant activities using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays. BER demonstrated an IC50 = 56.86 µg/mL in HEP-G2 cells and IC50 < 5.0 µg/mL in L5178Y-R cells, with SI values of 15.97 and >5.40 in VERO and PBMC cells, respectively. No significant hemolytic effects were observed, although AmexM and BER exhibited the highest anti-hemolytic activity. BER also demonstrated superior antioxidant efficacy, with lower toxicity in A. salina nauplii compared to the control. Additionally, BER significantly attenuated nitric oxide production. This study highlights the antiproliferative effects of A. mexicana, particularly BER, against HEP-G2 and L5178Y-R tumor cell lines, along with its selectivity towards normal cells. Mustard and canola oils are commonly used cooking oils in Asian countries such as India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, making them prone to adulteration. Argemone is a well-known adulterant of mustard oil, and its alkaloid sanguinarine has been linked with health conditions such as glaucoma and dropsy. Utilising a non-destructive spectroscopic method coupled with a chemometric approach can serve better for the detection of adulterants. This work aimed to evaluate the performance of various regression algorithms for the detection of argemone in mustard and canola oils. The spectral dataset was acquired from fluorescence spectrometer analysis of pure as well as adulterated mustard and canola oils with some local and commercial samples also. The prediction performance of the eight regression algorithms for the detection of adulterants was evaluated. Extreme gradient boosting regressor (XGBR), Category gradient boosting regressor (CBR), and Random Forest (RF) demonstrate potential for predicting adulteration levels in both oils with high R2 values. The present study was conducted in Department of Botany, Institute of Science, Nagpur, to investigate the allelopathic effects of Mexican poppy (Argemone mexicana L.) on wheat. Wheat is the most important edible cereal crop. Wheat can grow in a wide variety of soils and temperatures, but thrives in humid regions with 30-90 cm of precipitation. Argemone mexicana L. is a rapidly expanding weed and an important competitor of wheat (in terms of allelochemicals). Weed is one of major cause of crop production loss. The entire plants of Argemone mexicana L. were harvested, rinse with tap water to remove soil debris, roots are dried in shade which kept at 25 degrees celcius (±2) for 72 hours. To demonstrate the germination of seeds of two locally grown wheat varieties (Sharabati and Lokwan), five concentrations of different ratios of root aqueous extract were obtained. A bioassay of a petri dish was carried out to assess the allelopathic potential of Argemone mexicana L. on the germination of Triticum aestivum L. seeds. The water based root extracts of weeds were used for treatment. The differential inhibitory effect of Argemone mexicana L. on Sharbati and Lokwan variety of wheat was observed. The Argemone genus includes weed species of great importance in traditional medicine due to biological activities attributed to secondary metabolites, mainly alkaloids, distributed in all tissues of this species. In addition, their seeds contain a large amount of oil (30 to 40%). For this reason, several authors have discussed the potential of this species as a non-edible source to produce multi-purpose raw materials and a low cost-crop for example in the production of biofuels such as biodiesel. Argemone species grows in poor soils with low water and nutrient requirements. This makes the Argemone species an attractive economical and environmentally friendly candidate for biofuels production. Furthermore, the Argemone species can also provide high-value by-products for the agrochemical and pharmaceutical industry. In this work, we compiled the ethnomedical information, biochemical features, and biofuel production efforts that have been published by testing different Argemone species, in order to compare the research efforts and analyze its biotechnological potential. After analyzing the literature, we conclude that the genus has great potential for high-value pharmaceutical products and energy production purposes, and also to control plant pests. Silver-Carrageenan (Ag/Carr) nanocomposite film for food packing application by the green method using Argemone albiflora leaf extract has been developed in this study. Different plant parts of Argemone albiflora (blue stem prickly poppy) are used all over the world for the treatment of microbial infections, jaundice, skin diseases etc. GC-MS analysis was used to examine the phytochemical found in the Argemone albiflora leaf extract which reduces the metal ions to nanoscale. The biopolymer employed in the synthesis of nanocomposite film was carrageenan, a natural carbohydrate (polysaccharide) extracted from edible red seaweeds. We developed a food packing that is biodegradable, eco-friendly, economical and free from harmful chemicals. These films possess better UV barrier and mechanical and antimicrobial properties with 1 mM AgNO 3 solution. The presence of silver nanoparticles in the carrageenan matrix was evident from FESEM. The mechanical properties were analysed by a Universal testing machine (UTM) and different properties like water vapour permeability (WVP), moisture content (MC) and total soluble matter (TSM) important for food packing applications were also analysed. The antimicrobial properties of the synthesized film samples were studied against E. coli and S. aureus pathogenic bacteria. These films were employed for the storage of cottage cheese (dairy product) and strawberries (fruit). This packing increased the shelf life of the packed food effectively. A thorough understanding of the emergence pattern and persistence of weed seeds is a prerequisite in framing appropriate weed management options for noxious weeds. In a study conducted at the University of Queensland, Australia, the emergence and seed persistence behavior of three major weeds Sonchus oleraceous, Rapistrum rugosum, and Argemone mexicana were explored with seeds collected from Gatton and St George, Queensland, Australia, with an average annual rainfall of 760 and 470 mm, respectively. Seed persistence was evaluated by placing seeds at the surface layer (0 cm) or buried at 2 and 10 cm depths enclosed in nylon mesh bags and examined their viability for 42 months. In another study, the emergence pattern of four populations, each from these two locations, was evaluated under a rainfed environment in trays. In the mesh-bag study, rapid depletion of seed viability of S. oleraceous from the surface layer (within 18 months) and lack of seed persistence beyond two years from 2 and 10 cm depths were observed. In trays, S. oleraceous germinated 3 months after seeding in response to summer rains and there was progressive germination throughout the winter season reaching cumulative germination ranging from 22 to 29% for all the populations. In the mesh-bag study, it took about 30 months for the viability of seeds of R. rugosum to deplete at the surface layer and a proportion of seeds (5 to 13%) remained viable at 2 and 10 cm depths even at 42 months. Although fresh seeds of R. rugosum exhibit dormancy imposed due to the hard seed coat, a proportion of seeds germinated during the summer months in response to summer rains. Rapid loss of seed viability was observed for A. mexicana from the surface layer; however, more than 30% of the seeds were persistent at 2 and 10 cm depths at 42 months. Argemone mexicana, a prickly plant commonly called as prickly poppy is found in sub tropical regions and is well known for its medicinal properties. Its potential as a medicinal plant has been practiced traditionally and been prescribed as medicines by Ayurvedic, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathic practices since several years. Each part of plant posses bio active compounds that help in curing ailments like HIV, malaria, ring worm infections, fungal infections, cancer etc. These activities have been studied in vivo and in vitro set up and results have been obtained in favor. Further, phytochemical evaluation has unveiled the presence of compounds like berberine, argemonine, protopine etc, which show curative actions and could be used for treatment of diseases with future preception. This review is a sum up of all literature available through the internet and was searched using keywords 'Argemone mexicana', 'phytochemical importance of Argemone' and many other exclusive words with respect to different activities scanned for reviewing. The references provided in the papers were also given a thorough look and retrieved the respected data from them too. For years, crop protection from pest attack, has been dominated by the use of synthetic insecticides. However, many of them can cause severe environmental problems and human health. In this context, the use of plant extracts constitutes an alternative to avoid this kind of contaminants. In this work, we investigated the chemical constituents and insecticidal activity of different extracts of leaves and stems of Argemone ochroleuca Sweet (Papaveraceae) against three economically important pests Sitophilos zeamais (Coleoptera:Curculionidae), Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera:Pyralidae) and Xyleborus ferrugineus (Coleoptera:Scolytidae). A GC-MS analysis mostly revealed the presence benzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as allocryptopine, protopine, among others. For the insecticidal activity, after nine hours of contact, the methanolic leaves extract showed a 100 % of mortality, followed by the dichloromethane stems extract with up to 93 % of mortality. Background: Fungal diseases can cause significant losses in the tomato crop. Phytophthora infestans causes the late blight disease, which considerably affects tomato production worldwide. Weed-based plant extracts are a promising ecological alternative for disease control., Methods: In this study, we analyzed the plant extract of Argemone mexicana L. using chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis (GC-MS). We evaluated its impact on the severity of P. infestans , as well as its effect on the components of the antioxidant defense system in tomato plants., Results: The extract from A. mexicana contains twelve compounds most have antifungal and biostimulant properties. The findings of the study indicate that applying the A. mexicana extract can reduce the severity of P. infestans , increase tomato fruit yield, enhance the levels of photosynthetic pigments, ascorbic acid, phenols, and flavonoids, as well as decrease the biosynthesis of H 2 O 2 , malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide anion in the leaves of plants infected with this pathogen. This study was designed to evaluate the transferosomal gel of leaf extract of Argemone mexicana. Because of smaller size transferosomes can penetrate across the pores of stratum corneum and enters the underlying viable skin in intact form. Different formulations of transferosomal gel were prepared and assessed for their antibacterial activity. The extract has been standardized for its alkaloid content using berberine as biomarker. Transferosomes were prepared using phosphatidylcholine, cholesterol and edge activator like sodium cholate by thin film hydration method using rotary evaporator and evaluated for various parameters. Later transferosomes were added to Carbopol934 gel and consequently evaluated for their physicochemical properties. Gels were found to be smooth, homogenous and pH lying in the normal skin pH range and easily spreadable. The size of transferosomes was in the range of 236.86to397.78 nm whereas entrapment efficiency was found between 49.84 to 68.23%. Amongst the prepared formulations of Argemone mexicana, B4 (20% sodium cholate) was found to possess significant drug content and encapsulation efficiency. The impact of this nano-mosquitocidal against biological control agents of mosquito larval populations has been poorly studied. In this research, we biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NP) using the Argemone mexicanaleaf extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Ag NPs were characterized using a variety of biophysical methods, including UV-vis spectophotometry, SEM, XRD and FTIR analyses. Moreover, the A. mexicana aqueous extract and the biosynthesized Ag NP were tested for acute toxicity against I, II, III, IV instars larvae of An. stephensi. The LC50 values achieved by the A. mexicana aqueous extract from 176.52 ppm (I instar), 218.67 ppm (II instar), 235.18 ppm (III instar), 257.56 ppm (IV instar), and synthesized silver nanoparticles were 28.53 ppm (I instar), 31.72 ppm (II instar), 37.47 ppm (III instar), 42.28 ppm (IV instar), respectively. Keratinophilic fungi are ecologically important fungi which degrade keratinous waste materials into simpler forms. Some of keratinophilic fungi are pathogenic for humans and animals and cause skin diseases. The aim of present study is to study the antifungal activity of leaves stem and flower extracts of Argemone mexicana against some isolated keratinophilic fungi viz. Chaetomium seminis-citrulli, Penicillium guttulosum, Aphanoascus terreus, Aphanoascus durus and Chrysosporium zonatum. The plant extracts were prepared with Soxhlet extraction in 80 percent methanol and further with diethyl ether using separating funnel. The antifungal activity of plant extracts was analysed by agar disc diffusion method on Sabouraud's Dextrose Agar (SDA) medium. Ketoconazole was used as the reference antifungal disc. The results were analysed in diameter of zone of inhibition. The result of present study indicated that Argemone mexicana have significant antifungal activity against all tested fungi. The bound flavonoid extract of Argemone mexicana recorded highest antifungal activity against keratinophilic fungi. Aphanoascus durus found to be the most susceptible fungal isolate among the tested fungi. Background: Toxoplasmosis is a serious zoonotic protozoal disease that is distributed worldwide and can infect almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans. In most cases, it is asymptomatic, but in immunocompromised individuals, it is associated with severe neurological and gastrointestinal disorders. A previous serological prevalence investigation in Saudi Arabia indicated that the disease prevalence ranged between 25% and 51% in various areas. Recommended commercial drugs cannot achieve 100% clearance due to side effects. Hence, the development of new safe and affordable drugs is an important goal. Aim: In the present study, extracts from the leaves and fruit of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. collected from different areas, along with two other medicinal plants (Argemone mexicana L. and Xanthium brasilicum Vell.) with established antiprotozoal activity, will be evaluated for antitoxoplasmal activity using an in vitro technique. Materials and Methods: All plants were extracted with 100% methanol and examined for activity against the Toxoplasma gondii RH strain via an intracellularly invaded Vero cell line with calculated inhibition percentages. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide colorimetric assay against the Vero cell line was used for cytotoxic evaluation, followed by selectivity index (SI) calculation. Results: X. brasilicum exhibited the best antitoxoplasmal activity with an IC50of 7.19 μg/ml, followed by the A. indica fruits collected from Qassim, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and leaves collected from Central Sudan with an IC50of 17.26 and 18.43 μg/ml, respectively. The best SI was obtained from the leaves of A. indica (6.28) collected from Sudan. Conclusion: Although X. brasilicum proved to have very potent antitoxoplasmal activity, the cytotoxicity was also very high, so the isolation of active compounds is highly recommended. Because of their adaptability and user-friendliness, internal combustion engines are widely used for a variety of purposes, including the generation of consistent power as well as transportation. As a result, the question of whether or not these engines can make use of bio-oils is an important one today. Bio-oils derived from biomass pyrolysis differ significantly from those derived from petroleum-based fuels and biodiesel. They could, however, be valuable alternatives to fossil fuels in order to attain a carbon-neutral future. Bio-oil obtained from catalytic pyrolysis of Argemone Mexicana seed using titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles was employed in IC engine to check its suitability as an alternative fuel. Engine performance analysis was conducted at B5, B10, B15, B20, B25, and B30 blend for different parameters such as brake thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature, and brake-specific fuel consumption with change in engine load. Emission analysis was also carried out for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide emissions. It was found that B30 blend resembled best performance and the bio-oil produced from catalytic pyrolysis of Argemone mexicana seed can be utilised as a substitute of fossil fuels in IC engine., (© 2022. Abstract: Epidemic dropsy is a potentially life‐threatening condition resulting from the ingestion of argemone oil derived from the seeds of Argemone mexicana Linn. Exposure to argemone oil is usually inadvertent, arising from mustard cooking oil adulteration. Sanguinarine, an alkaloid present in argemone oil, has been postulated as a causative agent with the severity of epidemic dropsy correlating with plasma sanguinarine levels. Cases of epidemic dropsy have also been reported following the topical application of argemone containing massage oil. Black salve, a topical skin cancer therapy also contains sanguinarine, but at significantly higher concentrations than that reported for contaminated massage oil. Although not reported to date, a theoretical risk therefore exists of black salve inducing epidemic dropsy. There are growing concerns about the toxicity of metronidazole (MNZ) antibiotics in wastewater, which must be removed. This study used AgN/MOF-5 (1:3) to investigate the adsorptive removal of MNZ antibiotics from wastewater. Green synthesis of Ag-nanoparticles was from Argemone mexicana leaf aqueous extract blended with the synthesized MOF-5 in 1:3 by proportion. The adsorption materials were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), N 2 adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface area increased due to the appearance of micropores. Besides, the efficiency of AgN/MOF-5 (1:3) for MNZ removal was evaluated by adsorption properties, including key influential parameters (adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, etc.) and adsorption mechanism, kinetics/isotherms. The results from the adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics (R 2  = 0.998) and well fitted with the Langmuir isotherm having 191.1 mg/g maximum adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanism of AgN/MOF-5 (1:3) was due to the interactions of π-π stacking, Ag-N-MOF covalent bonding and hydrogen bonding. Thus, AgN/MOF-5 (1:3) is a potential adsorbent for the removal of aqueous MNZ. A new species of the braconine genus Bracon (subgenus Bracon), B. hidalguensis sp. nov., is described from the locality of Tasquillo in the state of Hidalgo, central Mexico. The new species was reared from roots of Argemone ochroleuca Sweet (Papaveraceae), where specimens of the weevil species Conotrachelus leucophaeus (Champion) (Curculionidae) were also obtained and thus probably it represents its host. The new Bracon species was characterised molecularly with DNA barcoding (COI) and a fragment of the variable D23 region of the nuclear ribosomal 28S gene.

Infections caused by parasites in humans represent one of the main public health concerns. Amoebiasis, a parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica), is considered endemic in Mexico, where Argemone mexicana (A. mexicana) has been used in traditional medicine to treat intestinal parasitic diseases. The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential biological activity of A. mexicana on E. histolytica. For this purpose, a methanolic extract was prepared from A. mexicana leaves, and a differential fractionation was carried out with solvents of different polarities. The inhibitory capacities of the extract and its fractions were evaluated in vitro using HM1-IMSS, a strain of Entamoeba histolytica. A. mexicana extract was found to have a growth-inhibiting activity for E. histolytica, showing IC50 = 78.39 μg/mL. The extract was characterized phytochemically, and the methanolic extract fractions were analyzed by liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS). Berberine and jatrorrhizine were present in the active fractions, and these compounds may be responsible for the antiparasitic activity. The identification of amoebicidal activity of A. mexicana on E. histolytica gives support to the traditional use. Aim: The present study was aimed to evaluate and compare the antioxidant potential of the methanolic extracts Plumbago zeylanica Linn (PZME), Datura stramonium (DSME) and Argemone mexicana Linn (AMME) with its polyherbal methanol extract (PHME) composition. Material and method: All the extracts were screened for the presence of various phytochemical by known and standard methods. Qualitative estimation of some potential phytoconstituents like flavonoids and polyphynolics was characterized by TLC (thin layer chromatography) and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). The quantification of the Rutin (flavonoid) and Gallic acid (polyphenol) were carried out using UV-visible spectrophotometry. The antioxidant activity of methanolic plant extracts and their combinations were assessed by DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil) method. Ascorbic acid was used as a standard and the antioxidant potential were evaluated at 2, 4, 6 and 8 mg/ml concentration. Results: The phytochemical characterization of PZME, DSME and AMME revealed the presence of tannins, alkaloids, phenols and flavonoids. The polyherbal methanol extract (PHME) was found to exhibit potent antioxidant activity with maximum free radical scavenging activity (FRSA) of 82.79% as compared to standard ascorbic acid (92.92%) at a concentration of 8 mg/ml and was found to be significantly greater than individual methanol plant extracts. Conclusion: The study revealed a potent synergistic antioxidant effect of methanol extracts of Plumbago zeylanica Linn, Datura stramonium Linn and Argemone mexicana Linn which can be successfully used to mitigate oxidative stress associated complications and other regenerative therapies. Conclusions: Among seven medicines selected, Osteo Arthritis Nosode was indicated in maximum number of cases as first prescription. In the present work, AgNPs were prepared using a simple bio-reduction method. This is ecologically welcoming and cost-effective method. Yellow colored blooms concentrate of Argemone mexicana and Turnera ulmifolia are used as bio reducing agents in the study. The formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and characterization of the nanoparticles was done by FTIR, SEM, XRD and EDX. The Antibacterial action of silver nanoparticles was tested against Staphylococus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella aerogenes. The phytochemical analysis of the blooms concentrate has shown the existence of saponins, alkaloids, amino acids, phenols, tannins, terpenoids, flavonoids and cardiac glycosides. Argemone ochroleucaoil methyl esters (Biodiesel) optimization was carried out using statistical analysis by one-way ANOVA, determining the R2; finally, the results are evaluated by F-test. Reaction temperature and time were most influencing factors, and experimental model appears to be fit. One-step biodiesel synthesis was followed, using alkali (NaOH) catalyzed reaction. Argemone mexicanamethyl ester was prepared by a two-step transesterification process due to its high acid value, and was tested for its combustion analysis with variation of blends at a fixed compression ratio of 17.5 and at a fixed load of 8 kg. B40 gives higher combustion pressure than that of standard diesel due to shorter ignition delay. The mass fraction burnt of blends is slightly higher than that of standard diesel. At a particular load, the heat release rate increases with lower percentage of biodiesel, while the cumulative heat release increases with increases in proportion of biodiesel in the blend. Transesterification process due to its high acid value was tested for its performance and emission analysis with variation of load and blends at a fixed compression ratio of 17.5. It has been found that at part load the brake thermal efficiency of B20 blend is higher than diesel and brake-specific fuel consumption decreases with load and increases with concentration of biodiesel in the blend. The exhaust gas temperature increases for increase in both load and concentration of blend. Objective: To analyze berberine and sanguinarine biosynthetic capacities of both in vitro shoot and root cultures of Argemone mexicana and tissues from entire plants at different developmental stages. Results: Berberine and sanguinarine were equally distributed in roots and aerial tissues of developing plantlet whereas, in juvenile plants, sanguinarine was only detected in roots. This alkaloid distribution was consistent with that of biosynthetic transcripts in juvenile plants. However, lower transcript abundance in plantlets´ leaves suggests that alkaloids were mainly formed in roots and then mobilized to this tissue. In vitro root cultures maintained similar alkaloid profiles to those from intact seedlings and plantlets. However, in addition to berberine, rootless shoot cultures accumulated high levels of sanguinarine and biosynthetic transcripts. Conclusion: In vitro shoot cultures of A. mexicana can synthesize sanguinarine in addition to berberine. This represent a convenient system for the production of both alkaloids. Context:Argemone mexicanaL. is native to Mexico and the plant extracts are used in traditional medicine in India and South American countries. Argemone oil (AO) is a common adulterant of mustard oil in India and causes serious pathophysiological consequences leading to outbreaks of epidemic dropsy among consumers.In vivocytogenetic studies on the toxicological effects of AO and its component alkaloids are limited.Objective: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the safety of AO by assessment of theirin vivogenotoxic potential in bone marrow cells of mice.Materials and methods: AO mixed in corn oil in the proportions of 0.01, 0.1, and 1 ml AO/kg body weight in a total volume of 10 ml/kg body weight and a single undiluted dose of AO (10 ml/kg body weight) were administered intraperitoneally in separate groups of male Swiss Albino mice for 24 h. In addition, a single concentration of sanguinarine (SG) (50 mg/kg body weight) was also administered. Genotoxicity was evaluated by chromosome aberration (CA) and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) tests. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) differential technique was used to study the effect on cell replication by the calculation of average generation time (AGT).Results: The minimum effective concentrations that produced significant frequencies of CA and SCE were 0.1 and 0.01 ml/kg, respectively. AO and SG induced an insignificant increase of AGT indicating that they are non-cytotoxic in the concentrations tested. Objective: Argemone mexicana is a Papaveracea plant; some reports have shown their antibacterial, anti-cancer, sedative and probably anti-anxiety properties. From their aerial parts, flavonoids and alkaloids have been isolated, which are intrinsically related to some actions on the central nervous system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anxiolytic-like effects of the plant, using its ethanolic extract and alkaloid-enriched extract obtained from fresh leaves. Material and Methods: Phytochemical screening was carried out together with evaluation of antioxidant capacity and the enrichment of alkaloids present in the extract. Subsequently, 100 and 200 mg/kg doses of ethanolic extract and alkaloid-enriched extract (200 µg/kg) were intraperitoneally administered to female Wistar rats, which were exposed to elevated plus maze (EPM) test. Picrotoxin (1 mg/kg), a non-competitive gamma-aminobutyric acid A (GABAA) chloride channel antagonist, was used in experimental procedures to evaluate if this receptor is involved in the anxiolytic-like effects of A. mexicana. To discard motor effects associated with the treatments, the rats were evaluated by the locomotor activity test. Results: Only the ethanolic extract at 200 mg/kg and alkaloid-enriched extract (200 µg/kg) produced anxiolytic-like effects similarly to diazepam 2 mg/kg on EPM test, without affecting locomotor activity. Meanwhile, the administration of picrotoxin blocked anti-anxiety effect of alkaloid-enriched extract of the plant. Conclusion: These results showed that A. mexicana is a potential anxiolytic agent and we suggest that this effect is mediated by the GABAA receptor. Context:Argemone mexicanaLinn. (Papaveraceae) has been used as traditional medicine in India and Taiwan for the treatment of skin diseases, inflammations, bilious, fever, etc. Some alkaloids ofA. mexicanahave been screened for their cytotoxicity on different cancer cell lines. Objective: The study investigates potential cytotoxic effects of alkaloids isolated from aerial part ofA. mexicanaon SW480 human colon cancer cell line. Materials and methods: Six alkaloids, 13-oxoprotopine, protomexicine, 8-methoxydihydrosanguinarine, dehydrocorydalmine, jatrorrhizine, and 8-oxyberberine were isolated from the methanol extract ofA. mexicana. Cytotoxicity of these alkaloids was studied on SW480 human colon cancer cell line at 1, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, and 200 µg/mL for 24 and 48 h. Cells were seeded in a 96-well micro-plate at a concentration of 2 × 104cells per well and MTS assay was performed to assess cytotoxicity in terms of cell viability. Results: At 200 µg/mL, protomexicine and 13-oxoprotopine showed mild cytotoxicity (∼24–28%) whereas dehydrocorydalmine exhibited moderate cytotoxicity (∼48%). 8-Oxyberberine was mildly cytotoxic (∼27%) at 24 h but was more potent (∼76%) at 48 h. Jatrorrhizine and 8-methoxydihydrosanguinarine were most potent (∼95–100%) in inhibiting the human colon cancer cell proliferation showing complete reduction in cell viability. Discussion and conclusion: This is the first study on the effect of these alkaloids on SW480 human colon cancer cell line. This study indicates that some alkaloids ofA. mexicanastrongly inhibit the cell proliferation in human colon cancer cells, and it might be a basis for future development of a potent chemotherapeutic drug. The inhibition effect of aqueous Argemone mexicana root extract (AMRE) on mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl has been studied by weight loss, Tafel polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy techniques. Results indicate that inhibition ability of AMRE increases with the increasing amount of the extract. A maximum corrosion inhibition of 94 % is acknowledged at the extract concentration of 400 mg L. Polarization curves and impedance spectra reveal that both cathodic and anodic reactions are suppressed due to passive layer formation at the metal-acid interface. It is also confirmed by SEM micrographs and FTIR studies. Furthermore, the effects of acid concentration (1-5 M), immersion time (120 h) and temperature (30-60 °C) on inhibition potential of AMRE have been investigated by the weight loss method and electrochemical techniques. A rapid hydrostatic counter-current chromatography-thin-layer chromatography-electrospray-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (CCC-TLC-ESI-TOF-MS) technique was established for use in seeking potent anti-Alzheimer's drugs among the acethylcholinesterase inhibitors in Argemone mexicana L. underground parts, with no need to isolate components in pure form. The dichloromethane extract from the roots of Mexican prickly poppy that was most rich in secondary metabolites was subjected to hydrostatic-CCC-based fractionation in descending mode, using a biphasic system composed of petroleum ether-ethyl acetate-methanol-water at the ratio of 1.5:3:2.1:2 ( v/ v). The obtained fractions were analyzed in a TLC-based AChE-inhibition 'Fast Blue B' test. All active components in the fractions, including berberine, protopine, chelerithrine, sanguinarine, coptisine, palmatine, magnoflorine, and galanthamine, were identified in a direct TLC-HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS assay with high accuracy. This is the first time galanthamine has been reported in the extract of Mexican prickly poppy and the first time it has been identified in any member of the Papaveraceae family, in the significant quantity of 0.77 %. Covariance among plant defense traits is predicted to occur both within and among plant species, potentially leading to characteristic defense syndromes. I examined patterns of variation in prickle density, latex exudation, and tolerance in order to assess whether traits varied between populations, across plant ontogeny, and as phenotypic plasticity in response to water and light limitation and physical damage using the endemic Hawaiian prickly poppy, Argemone glauca, as a model system. Plants produced copious latex, had extremely variable prickle densities, and were generally tolerant of 50 % defoliation. However, expression patterns differed among defense traits. Prickle density was consistent across ontogeny and was not induced by either water limitation or mechanical damage, but was significantly induced under high light conditions. In contrast, latex exudation increased significantly across ontogeny and was reduced by water limitation, but had no response to mechanical damage or light. Prickles, latex, and tolerance differed considerably between populations, suggesting different evolutionary histories for these populations. These disparate patterns indicate that latex and prickles are unlinked within A. glauca, potentially as a result of differences in their function, and providing little evidence that they jointly function as a defense syndrome. Moreover, this study provides the first description patterns of variation for multiple defense traits in an island endemic, and high levels of prickles, latex, and tolerance suggest that A. glauca is well defended against herbivores. The larvicidal, behavioral, and morphological response of dengue vector, Aedes aegypti treated with deleterious weed, Argemone mexicana, was explored. The 1,000 ppm extracts of A. mexicana leaf, stem, and roots prepared in five different solvents (petroleum ether, hexane, benzene, acetone, and ethanol) were screened for their larvicidal activity against dengue vector establishing the efficacy of petroleum ether and hexane extracts. Other extracts, unable to give 100 % mortality, were considered ineffective and discarded from further study. Larvicidal bioassay conducted with selected extracts confirmed the higher efficacy of hexane extracts exhibiting 1.1- to 1.8-fold more potential than the petroleum ether extracts. The results further revealed 1.6- to 2.4-fold higher efficacy of root extracts than those prepared from the leaves and stem of A. mexicana. The hexane root extract of A. mexicana was found to be the most effective larvicide with LC value of 91.331 ppm after 24 h of exposure causing 1.8 and 2.4 fold more toxicity as compared to the hexane leaf and stem extracts, respectively. Prolonged exposure of the larvae to the extracts resulted in increased toxicity potential of the extracts. Observations of the treated larvae revealed excitation, violent vertical, and horizontal movements with aggressive anal biting behavior suggesting effect of extracts on their neuromuscular system. Morphological studies of the treated larvae revealed the demelanization of cuticle and shrinkage of internal cuticle of anal papillae indicating the anal papillae as the probable action sites of the A. mexicana extracts.
