Due to the concentrated carbon emission sources and the enormous carbon emissions in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous, it is necessary to evaluate carbon sequestration potential to support future CCUS planning and major demonstrations. Based on the basic geological conditions for carbon sequestration in Ningxia, this study used the volumetric method of the US Department of Energy (US-DOE) to assess the geological potential for deep saline aquifer sequestration in Ningxia. The results show that the predicted geological potential of carbon sequestration in the deep saline aquifers in Ningxia is approximately 86.742 billion tons, with the predicted technical capacity of about 42.334 billion tons. The main reservoirs are concentrated in the Yanchi area in eastern Ningxia and the Liupan Mountain Basin. A preliminary evaluation of the suitability of saline aquifer sequestration in Ningxia was conducted by considering many factors such as the overall sequestration potential, cap rock integrity, geological stability, and socio-environmental risks. The results indicate that the Yanchi area in eastern Ningxia has favorable reservoir and cap rock conditions, stable structures, and low population density, making it a potential region for CO2 sequestration in Ningxia.

ABSTRACTA backpropagation neural network (BPNN) was used to predict salinity levels in the Chott Djerid shallow aquifers. A set of 51 water samples was collected from the Chott Djerid plio-quaternary aquifers for geochemical analysis. Major elements and nitrates were ascertained by using high performance liquid-ion chromatography. The BPNN was trained on a dataset of 51 water samples with variable geochemical parameters. Our results indicated a high accuracy when applying a model with 13 inputs, 1 hidden layer (6 neurons) and 1 output (TDS in mg/L). The collected data were split into 80% for training the model and 20% for testing and cross validation. The result was evaluated using various statistical performance criteria (i.e., MSE, RMSE, R2, SSE, SD, Accuracy, Sensitivity, specificity, and Kappa test); it showed that BPNN model properly predicted the salinity of the Chott Djerid plio-quaterny water samples (RMSE = 0.0402; R2 = 0.9721 and SSE = 0.0146). The BPNN was able to capture the complex relationship between salinity levels and other aquifer parameters. The potential application of BPNNs for predicting salinity levels in shallow aquifers was crucial in supporting decision-makers for water management; it provided valuable insights into the salinity fluctuation of the studied shallow aquifers.

Arsenic is found in significant quantities within the alluvial aquifers. Bangladesh heavily relies on the alluvial aquifers of the Bengal Basin as a source of irrigation and drinking water. Due to the flat topography, arsenic within an aquifer is not easily flushed out of the system. Additionally, continuous, unregulated pumping causes arsenic from deeper aquifers to migrate to shallower levels. This study simulates groundwater and contaminant transport in the alluvial aquifers of the Bengal Basin by comparison between two scenarios prior to human intervention with different sea levels, employing a combination of MODFLOW, MODPATH and MT3DMS. The simulations demonstrate that the hydraulic gradient and flow rates were higher during periods of considerably lower sea levels than they are at present. Additionally, it would require 5,600 years for the Holocene aquifer and 3,300 years for the Last Glacial Period aquifer to flush arsenic to the Bangladesh standard concentrations in drinking water in a 100-m-thick contaminated aquifer. This implies that if the sea level continues to rise with climate change, it will be difficult to remove arsenic from the alluvial aquifers in the Bengal Basin by natural flushing, which means artificial interventions need to be done for the interest of nation's health. Abstract Shallow coastal aquifers are vulnerable hydrosystems controlled by many factors, related to climate, seawater-freshwater interactions and human activity. Given on-going climate change, sea level rise and increasing human impact, it is especially true for groundwater resources situated in sandbars. We developed numerical models of unsaturated zone water flow for two sandbars in northern Poland: the Vistula Spit and the Hel Spit using HYDRUS-1D. The simulations were performed for three types of land use: pine forest, grass cover and bare soil, for 2024–2100 based on weather data and sea level rise forecasts for two emissions scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). The results present prognosis of groundwater recharge, water table level and water content changeability in near-term (2023–2040), mid-term (2041–2060), and long-term period (2081–2100). Expected sea level rise and decreasing hydraulic gradient of the sandbar aquifers will probably cause in-land movement of the freshwater–saltwater interface, leading to significant decrease or complete salinization of groundwater resources. The study shows that holistic monitoring including groundwater level and salinization, sea level rise, and metheorological data (precipitation amount and variability, temperature) is crucial for sustainable management of vulnerable aquifers located in sandbars.

Massive storage of dihydrogen (H 2) in underground geological storage (UGSs) will be necessary to meet future H 2 production ambitions. Such storage in deep aquifers was simulated in a high-pressure reactor, and the evolution of the 3 phases (natural gas/H 2 , formation water and rock) with autochthonous microorganisms was monitored over several weeks. These results show that methanogens do not necessarily dominate the community, but that sulfate-reducing activity and formate bioproduction are systematically present. The experimental data were fed into a biochemical model in PHREEQC to better understand the interplay between the phenomena observed. In particular, it was shown that the microbial activities associated with H 2 consumption led to alkalinisation, which could explain, at least in part, the slower rate at which H 2 disappeared, even if sufficient CO 2 and sulfate remained in the system. Combined with a supposed local nutrient depletion, these results are encouraging for H 2 storage in deep aquifers. • Injection of H 2 in three deep aquifers was studied in a high-pressure reactor. • Multidisciplinary approach including experiment analyses and biochemical modeling. • Low sulfate content sites should be favored for H 2 storage in deep aquifers. • Storage behavior needs to be studied site-specifically. Water has prominence over all the usable natural resources to humankind due to its very significance to human life. Approximately, 70% of Ghana's populace relies on groundwater exploitation for freshwater consumption. Managed aquifer recharge is capable of sustaining water resources for all livelihood activities. Underperformance of MAR systems is often due to site-specific hydrogeological conditions turning out to be less favorable than anticipated. This study evaluates the site-specific conditions for MAR sites identification in granitic aquifers, integrating in situ hydrogeological factors and GIS-MCDA. One hundred and twenty-one datasets from different boreholes comprising hydro geophysics, borehole drilling and pump test reports were used. The constraint mapping results indicate 92% suitable for MAR application within the study area, implying available enormous bare lands for flooding recharge technique. The suitability analysis discloses that 48 and 51% of the studied area fall within very high and high suitable zones, respectively, showing convincing and great potential to support infiltration ponds for MAR technology application. The valuable information provided through this study can serve as a guide for MAR implementation and for sustainable groundwater resources management within the Upper East region of Ghana. Study area: The western and eastern flanks of Ethiopia's Awash and Abay Basins, respectively. Study focus: Identifying recharge zones of the main aquifers in the Upper Awash Basin, which are water resources targeted for long-term sustainable use. In this work, lithohydrostratigraphic concepts with fracture density, hydrogeochemical and stable isotopic insights were applied using information from 94 water-supply wells, 188 geoelectrical resistivity, 124 hydrochemistry, and 81 stable isotopic data sets. New hydrogeological insights of the area: The results illustrate that recharge of superficial deposits and Rift basalt aquifers is from modern precipitation and from nearby streams/rivers through fractures, which is exemplified by mixed CaHCO3 or CaMgHCO3 water types of low TDS (5), low RA (468 mg/l), low Ca/Na ratio (2.0), highly depleted isotopic signals, and low deuterium excess (
