A large number of ancient mosaics are no longer available to us because they have been destroyed by erosion, earthquakes, looting, or even used as materials in newer construction. To make things worse, among the small fraction of mosaics that have been recovered, many are damaged or incomplete. Therefore, it is of interest to explore how the mosaics may have appeared originally by using virtual reconstruction. This has traditionally been done manually and more recently using computer graphics programs but always by humans. In the last few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has made impressive progress in the generation of images from text descriptions and reference images. State-of-the-art AI tools such as DALL-E2 can generate high-quality images from text prompts and can take a reference image to guide the process. In August 2022, DALL-E2 launched a new feature called outpainting that takes as input an incomplete image and a text prompt and then generates a complete image filling in the missing parts. In this paper, we explore whether this innovative technology can be used to perform virtual reconstruction of mosaics with missing parts. Hence, a set of ancient mosaics have been selected and DALL-E2 has been used to create virtual reconstructions; the results are promising, showing that AI is able to interpret the key features of the mosaics and is able to produce virtual reconstructions that capture the essence of the scene. However, in some cases AI does not reproduce some details or geometric forms or introduces elements that are not consistent with the rest of the mosaic. This suggests that when AI image generation technology matures in the next few years, it could be a valuable tool to create virtual reconstructions of mosaics in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the transformative nature of travel and the reflection it prompts on one's own identity and limitations. Michèle Blanchard-Lemée (1936-2017), from an early date associated with the team of Henri Stern at the CNRS and work on the corpus of ancient mosaics of Gaul, was at the same time also a disciple of G. Ch. Picard. She began her scientific career with a study about African mosaics under the authority of G. Ville and her interest in African archaeology continued to the end. Her thesis on the mosaic pavements of Djemila (Algeria), under the direction of P.-A. Février, was a landmark, and this site remained at the heart of her concerns, exemplified in her recent posthumous publication focused on the “house of Bacchus” at Djemila. Her research work, her advices about restoration and museography of ancient mosaics in Algeria, her role in the dissemination of mosaic studies in that country and her training of other researchers, gave her a significant place in the recent developments of Algerian archaeology and Franco-Algerian co-operation.

This study investigates the complex geometry of the pattern of circles in the Magdouh Mosaic, which dates to between the ffth and sixth centuries, found in Antioch-on-the-Orontes (modern Antakya, Turkey). The mosaic has a complex pattern that is composed of tangent, overlapping and intersecting circles suggesting that it was worthwhile analyzing in 3D. Through such an analysis, it was observed that the extension of the pattern of circles into a third dimension looks like spheres packed together that intersect in three directions at right angles. This can also be demonstrated by packing octahemioctahedra, which are a cluster of eight regular packed tetrahedra contained within the spheres. In addition, the packing of octahemioctahedra in this way also suggests the packing of stella octangula contained within hemispheres that intersect each other. Furthermore, tracing the line segments that are emphasized in each circle in the Magdouh Mosaic in such a 3D structure turns them into space-flling rhombohedra that can be dissected into two tetrahedra and an octahedron. Thus, the result of this study shows that the Magdouh Mosaic in Antioch is the top view of a square-based pyramidal cluster of intersecting hemispheres that hold space-flling rhombohedra inside them.

This study focuses on the Byzantine glass tesserae from Hierapolis (Phrygia, central Turkey). Fifty-seven samples of loose tesserae from two sites in the town (the theatre and the church of St. Philip) are analysed by particule-induced X-ray emission and particule-induced gamma ray emission and electron probe X-ray microanalysis to obtain the chemical composition and identify the colourants and opacifiers. The aims are to add new information to the scant knowledge of the Byzantine glassmaking technology, to constrain the chronology of the mosaics and to trace the supply routes of the tesserae. In the destruction layers of the theatre, tesserae produced following the Roman glassmaking technology (natron glass opacified by calcium and lead antimonate) were found. They were made using a Levantine 1 raw glass, generally attributed to the early Byzantine period (fifth to sixth c.). In the church, the samples attest a technological change from Roman tradition, and a complex pattern according to building history (two phases are attested, probably in the sixth and eighth to ninth c.), and a multiplicity of supply. Three glass types and some recipes not attested before in this chronological range for the production of tesserae are documented, such as the use of a local low-chlorine natron glass for the production of black and red tesserae, the blue colouring by a source of cobalt with zinc in a natron glass tessera and the opacification with tin oxide (both in a lead-free and in a high-lead natron glass), as well as with quartz. This study concerns the microfacies characterization of white and black limestone tesserae from selected Roman floor mosaics in Slovenia, with the aim of defining their provenance. We investigated 42 tesserae from 15 different mosaics from the archaeological sites of Ljubljana, Izola, Mošnje, Ptuj, Črnomelj and Šentpavel, dated from the first century bc to the fifth century ad. Among the studied tesserae, 13 different microfacies were identified: eight black and five white. The most common were mudstones with ostracods (65% of black tesserae) and wacke-packstones with miliolids (85% of white tesserae). The majority of the identified facies can be found in the Cretaceous successions of the Dinaric Carbonate Platform in south-western Slovenia, north-eastern Italy and south-eastern Croatia, suggesting a regional or imported origin of the tesserae. In arid Australia, the antiquity, role and ecological contexts of ‘firestick’ farming in seed-based foraging economies remain unclear. We use Landsat imagery to analyse effects of contemporary Martu hunting fires on seed-bearing grasses and forbs. Today, Martu rarely harvest wild seeds but inadvertently foster patches of grass when they burn to hunt burrowing monitor lizards. Therefore, anthropogenic seed patches need only be by-products of fires set to achieve other goals rather than the intended crop of firestick farming. Nonetheless, sustained burning over the long-term creates and maintains closely juxtaposed mosaics of seed and small game patches. We use the marginal value theorem (MVT) to model how pre-contact foragers may have used seed patches within such mosaics in response to climate change and population growth. We show that seeds would have been reliably available to foragers in anthropogenic patches whenever small game hunting returns were low and travel distances to new hunting patches long. Such circumstances probably occurred during the middle to late Holocene when population growth filled better-watered habitats of arid Australia, and climatic variability associated with the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) reduced the number of water sources that could support foraging. Prolonged occupation around the water sources that remained triggered the emergence of fine-grained, anthropogenic fire mosaics. If so, the late Holocene proliferation of formalised seed milling equipment closely followed the emergence of firestick farming and signalled the consequent development of seed-based foraging economies, further fuelling population growth and social complexity when more mesic climatic conditions returned. Earlier milling technology during the Pleistocene and early Holocene probably accommodated seed distributions created in fire regimes other than the mosaic burning conducted by Martu today. The Rothschild Lycurgus Cup from the 4th c. AD is one of the most renowned masterpieces of late Roman glass workmanship. It represents a type referred to as 'cage cups' (diatreta) and belongs to a rare group of dichroic glass. It depicts the punishment of king Lycurgus for his hubris against Dionysus. The focus of the paper is on the iconography of the decoration and its symbolism. The frieze on the Lycurgus Cup is compared to other representations of the myth on ancient vases and mosaics in order to get a broader view of the theme. The article focuses on the complex interaction between gold and light in the very specific medium of mosaic in Late Antiquity and Byzantium. Studying the metaphoric qualities of light/gold and its qualitative distinctions in early Christian and Byzantine sources leads us to an understanding of the complex function of gold or golden tesserae in script and images. As gold is understood as light, mosaic seems to be a more or less perfect medium as it is not stable, but dependent on the changing light. The gold ground is transformed in every moment by light. Mosaic can thus be understood as the medium with the greatest capacity to bridge - virtually - the gap between the visible and the invisible divine light. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zusammenfassung: Neue Studien betonen hinsichtlich der Neolithisierung Nordwesteuropas ein Mosaik verschiedener Prozesse. Dennoch scheint es möglich, einheitliche Merkmale zu identifizieren, die die Entwicklung der Landwirtschaft überregional beeinflussten. Der folgende Beitrag hebt die Bedeutung evolutionärer Prozesse für die Neolithisierung hervor, dies mit einem Fokus auf die südlichen Niederlande. Jene Regionen zeichnen sich durch vielfältige Biome aus, in denen die Übernahme der Landwirtschaft auf unterschiedlichem Wege erfolgte. Analysiert werden dabei sich jeweils ergebende Vorteile für die körperliche Verfasstheit der beteiligten Akteure durch die Kombination von Nahrungssuche und Landwirtschaft. Die Autoren vermuten, dass die Ernährungsstrategien der Menschen von den vielfältigen Substraten unterschiedlich beeinflußt wurden, und dies sich darüber hinaus auch zwischen den Geschlechtern erkennen läßt. Bezüglich der Frage, ob und wie neolithische Innovationen übernommen wurden, werden daher für Männer und Frauen unterschiedliche Strategien sichtbar, die verfügbaren Resourcen jeweils 'optimal' zu nutzen. Il est cependant possible d'identifier à travers les différentes régions certains objectifs majeurs qui ont influencé l'adoption de l'agriculture. Nous modélisons l'importance des processus évolutionnaires à la base de la néolithisation. Nous nous concentrons sur la partie méridionale des Pays-Bas, où l'agriculture a été adoptée suivant des trajectoires bien distincts dans différents biomes. Nous analysons cette transition selon les avantages physiques que la cueillette et l'agriculture ont pu apporter aux acteurs concernés. Nous proposons que divers substrats offrent différents avantages concernant l'adoption de l'agriculture et suggérons que ces avantages variaient selon les sexes, c'est-à-dire que les stratégies « optimales » par rapport à l'adoption et du mode d'adoption des innovations néolithiques différaient entre hommes et femmes. Abstract: Recent studies emphasise the mosaic character of the process of neolithisation in north-western Europe. However, some overarching motives influencing the uptake of farming can be identified across regions. We model the importance of evolutionary processes underlying neolithisation. We focus on the southern part of the Low Countries, where the uptake of agriculture follows distinct trajectories in different biomes. We analyse the transition in terms of fitness benefits that foraging and agriculture bestow on the actors involved. We suggest that different substrates offer different fitness benefits with regard to the uptake of farming and that these benefits differed between the sexes, leading to differing 'optimal' strategies for males and females regarding whether and how to adopt Neolithic innovations. In this work, we present the results of the quantitative determination of Fe and Mn in different oxidation states, inferring a colour to the glass used in a palaeo-Christian polychrome mosaic of St. Prosdocimus in the Basilica of St. Justine (Padova). The colour in the glass is determined by the amount of the ions of the elements in different oxidation states. More than 3000 loose tesserae of this mosaic, characterised by a full range of colours, are available, with different features of opacity. For a representative batch of tesserae with different colours, the determination of Mn(II), Mn(III), Fe(II) and Fe(III) was obtained by using a combination of Electron MicroProbe Analysis (EMPA) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). A meaningful relationship between colour, and the ions content in the ancient glasses was found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper examines geometrical ornaments from ancient mosaic. We studied the geometric generation by using Computer Aided Graphics for three examples of ancient mosaic: a mosaic of Ancient Corinth, a mosaic of the sacred geometry Flower of Life (exposed in the National Museum of Israel) and a mosaic of fortress Masada - Israel. The technique of drawing ancient mosaic is recomposed using computer aided graphics. A program has been developed that can help draw a petal-type arc (semicircle) of the mosaic that is the Byzantine church of Masada. Based on these mosaics, other variants of aesthetic images in monochrome or black and white and polychrome were drawn, all of which can be materialized in decorative art to embellish various surfaces: walls, floors, pools, fountains, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We will present some examples of vegetal decoration (acanthus leaves; hederae leaves, rosettes...) represented in some of the Roman Portuguese mosaics. The aim is to analyze this decoration comparing the representations in the Portuguese mosaics with the mosaics from some of the disseminating centers of North-Africa and the Middle-East. For this analysis it is important to consider the paths these ornaments took reaching the southwest of Hispania through different ways of contacts: the Continental, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The conservation of mosaics unearthed at excavations is evaluated according to the conditions in which they were buried / found and is generally classified, in terms of low, medium, or high level of deterioration in the mosaics. If the mosaics remain in their location in their complete or almost complete form they are generally considered to be intact; on the other hand, mosaics which are disaggregated, crumbled, or have lost the unity in their design, whether in the tessellatum or in other structural layers, are evaluated as having suffered deterioration/damage at a low, medium, or high level, according to the degree of deterioration. As with all archaeological materials, in order to overcome problems that have arisen or new ones that may arise in the mosaics uncovered in excavations, and with the aim of stabilizing the structure, a series of effective or preventive conservation interventions have to be resorted to. While for mosaics that are intact mosaic conservation can be limited to essential preliminary treatment and taking the necessary measures for conservation, mosaics that have suffered deterioration can necessitate effective conservation that calls for efforts that increase proportionately to the degree of deterioration. At this point it is important that decisions for intervention be taken by competent people, that these decisions be correct and adequate, and that conservation and restoration be implemented by competent individuals using acknowledged methods. In this study preventive and effective conservation methods necessary for mosaics that need to be preserved in situ at archaeological sites are explained using concrete examples of practical implementation selected from our various experiences. Mosaics found in Commagene and Syria Region are works of a large period from The Hellenistic Period to Late Roman/Byzantian Period. For example while the mosaics found in Samosata (Samsat), the capital of Commagene mostly dates to Late Hellenistic Period, a mosaic pavement was found belonging to Byzantian Period in the same settlement. 3rd century A.D mosaics of Edessa (Şanlıurfa) the capital city of Osroene region are attractive with their local iconographies as well as includes foreign elements. It is also observed on the samples founded in the Haleplibahçe excavation in the late mosaics of the region. It is possible to make similar predictions according to some samples in other settlements of the region. In this study, local characteristics of the mosaics are going to be identified, be compared with the samples in other settlements and foreign effects and characteristics be evaluated. Hadrianoupolis is located 3 km west of the modern town of Eskipazar, near Karabük, in southwestern Paphlagonia. Some of the ruins of the structures in the city have remarkable floor mosaics which are dated to the end of the Vth century and the first half of the Vlth century A.D. These buildings with mosaic floors are the Baths 'A' and ‘B’, the Early Byzantine Churches 'A' and ‘B’ and an Early Byzantine Villa. Excavation studies of the buildings were conducted by a team directed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ergün Laflı from the Dokuz Eylül University in 2006 and 2007. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three pieces of mosaics depicting the labors of Heracles are exhibited in Istanbul Archeological Museum. These are the scenes of Heracles slaying the Nemean Lion, capturing the Erymanthean Boar and fetching the golden apples of the Hesperides. They are here on one and the same scene, but the actual site of the pieces of the nine other labors of Heracles is unknown. The mosaic mentioned above was captured and the traffickers of antiquities were arrested in Istanbul. In 1879 the German orientalist K.E. Sachau payed a visit to the village of Belkis which is situated about 10 km. north-west of Birecik while he went from Aleppo to Urfa. He witnessed how a floor mosaic. The hunting of the Erymanthean Boar of the labors of Heracles was uncovered during illegal excavations, and he wrote to his diary of seeing the depictions. Depictions of Heracles are also seen on the mosaics of Antioch. But the depiction of the mosaic of Heracles in Zeugma is unknown, except for Sachau's observation and mentioning of the Zeugma mosaics. The depictions of Heracles are common in sculptures and seal engravings (glyptik) of Zeugma. The dexiosis relief (stele) showing the King of Antiochus I shaking hands with Heracles and the relief of resting Heracles were found at the rescue excavations in Zeugma. In addition, there are many depictions of Heracles on the seal impressions found in Zeugma. Max von Oppenheim pointed out that there had been found in-situ mosaic in Birecik. It was the only one in-situ mosaic ever found in Birecik city. Other mosaics that are on the tresholds and the ground of the windows in the old house of Birecik were bought therefrom Zeugma according to the information given by the residents. The mosaic in Istanbul Archaeological Museum is similar to the mosaic that was seen by Sachau in Belkis Village. It is also similar in style and period to the Zeugma mosaics. Owing to illegal excavations carried out in Zeugma since 1873, many mosaics were scattered to many museums and private collections. The pieces of mosaics that are depictions the labors of Heracles in Istanbul Archaeological Museum were probably stolen from Zeugma. The mentioned pieces of mosaic are only among a few of the mosaic which are Zeugma has been waiting the return path. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of the mosaics found on the south-east Adriatic coasts, between Epirus Nova and Epirus Vetus (the current Albania), highlights significant analogies between the animals’ representations depicted on these floors and those represented on the early Christian basilicas or buildings cover floors in Syria, Turkey and in some other important centers of Eastern Mediterranean and Northern Adriatic. The iconographic and the iconological analyses offer new clues to reflect on some well-known models which circulated throughout the Adriatic and the Mediterranean areas between 4th and 6th century A.D., in geometrical and figure patterns (Aquileia, Butrinto, etc.), as well as in daily-life patterns (Dyrrachium, Bylis, Costantinople, etc.). Also, there are interesting parallels between these patterns and those of the Orpheus mosaics (Ulpiana, Sicily, Sparta, Chahba, Istambul, etc.). The comparisons which will be drawn will enable us to reflect on the connections between Eastern and Western Adriatic areas with important centers in the late ancient era, which the sea does not divide, but rather brings together: such a perspective is viewed as extremely important in the study of the history of coastal countries in the Adriatic, the Mediterranean and beyond. The subject of this paper is the study of the figured representation of a mosaics craftsman in a fragmentary pavement, preserved in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. Of unknown provenance, apparently comes from the territory of ancient Syria in the Eastern Roman Empire. Such representation is a hapax, not only in the Roman mosaics of Syria, but also in the corpus of Roman Empire, since, although several mosaic inscriptions in some pavements, which show the name of the mosaic artisans and / or different names for different functions of the trades related to the development of mosaics, and even the reference to the workshop, who were teachers or members of his team of craftsmen, the figured representation of a mosaicist, in the instant to be doing his work, is truly unique. As a result of rescue excavations of ancient city of Germenicia the mosaics that are found was removed and transferred to the museum by the Kahramanmaras Museum Directorate. In the first transfer project, for the purpose of transporting the back of the mosaic panels was made a support by cement-based mortar. In our project, the concrete support that was at back of the mosaics is cleaned and mosaics were prepared for the new places for the exhibition project of Kahramanmaras Museum. The missing parts were completed according to the original documentation. After the restoration work was completed of the mosaics were exhibited in the museum. The church is located at real estate with parcel number 7890, in Arvalya location on Selçuk-Kuşadası highway. In its immediate surroundings, there are Gül Hanım Mound, Arvalya Forest Camp Hellenistic tumulus, tomb building and several vaulted spaces that can be tracked through the surface. The church was discovered in 2010, during earthworks/or construction of a football pitch on the field; and its scientific evaluation was then carried out thanks to excavations by Ephesus Museum. In the wake of researches it is found that the church was built in early 5th century, on a monumental Roman structure. The church lies in east-to-west direction. It has a basilical plan scheme with three naves. The middle nave is wider than the lateral ones. On the east, there is an apse with a round plan on both interior and exterior sides. The west frontiers are lost during building excavations. According to present traces, the nave of naos seems to be paved with mosaics, whereas the side naves are fitted with bricks. One section of the bordure of mosaic pavement on middle nave is partially protected, while its middle section exists in parts. The bordure consists of alternately placed geometrical motifs. The figure of middle field, however, cannot be identified. In this paper, our aim is to present this partly survived building, which was not published before together with photos, drawings and also to compare with the contemporary examples. Mosaics found in the Mosaic Hall which is a 5 gallery building located to the west of the West Stoa and south of Bouleuterion and adjecent to both are composed of geometric and floral motifs. There are two phases of mosaics on top of each other inside the building. Mosaics in the Hall are partly preserved but in most areas decays and absence of tessellatum, nucleus and rudus can be seen. Documentation, cleaning, strengthening and in some parts completing the mosaic with original tesserae is done in phases in order to restore and conserve the mosaic. Archaeological digs in the area are proceeding at the same time with the restoration work on the mosaic thanks to the roof temporarily placed over the Mosaic Hall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Even if the figurative mosaics are usually the ones to catch the attention of the archeologists and the public, we cannot deny the meaning of the geometrical and the floral motives for the study of the mosaics landscape in the roman world. The combination of the different motives, the colors chosen for each motive and their combination can help to identify the influences that determined the making of the pavements. The paper offers a short memory of the spectacular investigations carried out from 1930 to 1939 in the area of the ancient Antioch, and also remembers the fate of the more than a hundred mosaic pavements uncovered and unearthed in that site. A cross-section of daily life takes place on two pieces of mosaics in Hatay Museum. On both pieces there is a man figure with beard trying to catch the dinner. The time shown by the sundial on the scene was described by the inscription taking place on one of the pieces. Sundials apart from the ones, at Hatay Museum take place on the scenes described by the scientists or philosophers who are engaged in scientific studies. The sundial described on the mosaic in Trier among the samples of Hatay Museum pieces and others differ from the others. The sundial described here must most probably be a model belonging to a time in which sundials just improved in Hellen world. Moreover, this sundial must be a model used not to determine the time but to observe the movements of the sun. Descriptions of sundials other than Trier sample are the samples taking place on the models of Vitruvius and those gained the identity of these complex tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Danae House was unearthed by my responsibility, on head of Gaziantep Museum Directorate in 2003-4 excavation. The house was named Danae owing to Danae was figured on the mosaics. Danae-Diktys mosaics were found in shallow pool (impluvium) of inner court. On this mosaics, the chest containing Danae and Perseus washed ashore on the island of Seriphos is described. Danae gets out from the box with her baby Perseus who was embraced by her, over agains pirate Diktys extends his hand to baby Perseus. One of the fisherman holds cover of the chest: the other looks at inside it. Similar scene like Danae- Diktys were find few on the other mosaics. The scene were described on the wall and vase painting. On these grounds, the Danae mosaics of Zeugma is rare. Geometries desing mosaics are seen on the ground of perystyle, living room, resting room and latrine. The motifs of geometric mosaics are intersecting circles forming quatrefoils, row of tanged outlined with serrated fillets, shaded three-strand guilloche, meander and row of tangent four-pointed stars as saltires, with in crosslets of 5 poised tesserae. These geometric motifs are also seen on the ground mosaics of the other houses of Zeugma. Owing to location of Danae House is higher than Birecik Dam lake, its mosaics are left on-site in original rooms which they were found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on three stories of art acquisitions in war. It explores the story of ancient mosaics taken from Cyprus after the 1974 Turkish invasion. It also addresses the story of five paintings by the great Viennese artist Gustav Klimt acquired around World War II. It also offers information on a Sumerian statue that disappeared from an Iraqi museum sometime after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began in March 2003.

Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is a well-known tool in cultural heritage diagnostics. It is also suitable to reveal cracks and debondings of tiles in ancient mosaics of Roman and Medieval age. This paper describes a portable electro-optic system as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the state of conservation of ancient mosaics. The proposed system is based on the integration of ESPI and local speckle correlation techniques. Some experiments have been carried out on real, ancient, mosaics in laboratory and in situ.
