This paper concerns a project to right a wrong, an epistemic as well as social wrong. The wrong? Science was to serve all humankind; that is what Francis Bacon and the other founders of modern science had promised and what a long line of their successors had signed on to. But by the twentieth century it had become clear that this science was regularly serving some of humankind far more than others and was even, quite frequently, actually harming those others rather than helping them. The problem lay with the knowledge that science offered about those others: the damaging 'information' that was really ignorance in disguise. But the problem also lay with the systematic ignorance science allowed, even encouraged, about those others: the helpful, uplifting knowledge about them that the science could have offered but did not. And the project to right the wrong? A transformation of the science-provided pattern of knowledge and ignorance engineered to achieve a more egalitarian result (what I call an epistemological-agnotological reengineering project). This longitudinal study of a national sample examined the effects of workers' gender and race on their entrance into managerial positions in public and private organizations over a period of four years. The African American Researchers in Computing Sciences (AARCS) program aims to broaden the participation of African Americans from historically Black colleges and universities in the computing sciences at the faculty and research scientist levels. The AARCS program serves as a model that can be incorporated into larger programmatic endeavors at institutions of higher education to target African Americans and other underrepresented groups. This study highlights features of the program, presents key research questions and findings of the evaluation, and generates specific programmatic knowledge for those interested in interventions designed to increase the representation of African American computing scientists, as well as other scientific-related disciplines within higher education. Two total solar eclipses in Africa are the setting for this study of the representations of black scientists in the international media, focusing on newspaper articles, Internet sites and television broadcasts. Careful consideration of the eclipse coverage in 2001 and 2002 led to the decision by these scientists to assume control of their own images during the 2006 eclipse, with some success. The simulcast of the 2006 eclipse was initially a collaboration between National Society of Black Physicist (NSBP) members and their host institutions, the Edward Bouchet Abdus Salam Institute (EBASI), the University of Cape Coast in Ghana and Cable News Network (CNN). During the final weeks before the eclipse event, this collaboration fractured into two independently funded efforts with differing agendas. The second group broadcast images of the Sun exclusively, which was meant to represent ‘pure’ science, while the first group presented a broader picture of astronomy that included interviews with African and African-American astronomers, interviews with University of Cape Coast students, and Ghanaian cultural astronomers. This latter cohort focused on local Ghanaian fishermen and their use of celestial objects for navigation, horology and weather predictions. That the larger group fractured in two is reflective of the debates of who defines science, who has the authority to speak about science, and who controls the images of science and scientists. This example is unique because it occurred within the ethnic space of African-American astronomers and physicists; it physically takes place in Africa and it captures the physical impact of cross-discipline encounters in this case. The article provides a documentation of the activism and applied contribution of select African American social scientists who contributed the development of the contemporary Black Studies academic discipline. It suggests that black social scientists are the progenitors of applied social science methodology. The author argues that black social scientists have been underrecognized intellectual leaders that helped established the applied social science.

We investigated the association between a U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) RO1 applicant's self-identified race or ethnicity and the probability of receiving an award by using data from the NIH IMPAC II grant database, the Thomson Reuters Web of Science, and other sources. Although proposals with strong priority scores were equally likely to be funded regardless of race, we find that Asians are 4 percentage points and black or African-American applicants are 13 percentage points less likely to receive NIH investigator-initiated research funding compared with whites. After controlling for the applicant's educational background, country of origin, training, previous research awards, publication record, and employer characteristics, we find that black applicants remain 10 percentage points less likely than whites to be awarded NIH research funding. The article describes the contributions to the "Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development" by two pioneering African American scientists, Jean V. Carew and Diana T. Slaughter. The 1980 "Monograph" of Carew demonstrated the importance of the maternal role in children's intellectual development. She used Burton White's competence model and Piagetian formulations to guide the conceptual framework. The 1983 doctoral research of Slaughter stressed individual differences in reported parenting styles within lower socioeconomic status groups.

This article focuses on the sociological issues of race and universalism in the scientific community. Sociological studies dealing with universalism in science focus on the social backgrounds of scientists-for instance, their social class origins and the colleges or universities where they took their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Racial discrimination has been pervasive in the U.S. society. It is questionable whether science as a social institution can be generally free of that racism. Although many black scientists are trained in prestigious departments, their place merit still may be affected by discrimination. Black Americans have suffered racial discrimination over a long period of American history, and that many social institutions practice institutional racism, is beyond doubt. Recent studies show that highly educated blacks are beginning to attain some parity with their white peers, although the economic conditions of blacks in general continue to be low. If Black scientists are not treated in a universalistic fashion, then the mechanisms of particularism and the outcomes of particularistic evaluations of role performance, may be identified. If discriminatory mechanisms are present and can be identified, countervailing forces may be instituted in science to remedy such particularistic treatment of blacks in the future.

The article offers the author's insights about African Americans in the field of entomology. Topics discussed include Charles Henry Turner who was the first African American to publish papers on insects, a survey which showed the number of African American entomologists, and African American entomologists at the University of California, Berkeley.

The article presents information on a study, made to understand the historical background of African Americans in American science. It has long been an accepted truth that one tenth of United States's population has performed only the country's unskilled tasks but scientific literature shows that the African American has not only given freely of his unskilled labors, but has regularly given of his skill in science and technology also. They have shown skill and made contributions to the early rise of the physical sciences which, as such, have aided greatly in the development of the industrial life of the United States. In the nineteenth century, a variety of talented African American scientists have made substantial contributions and presented new frontiers in science. The works of several African American scientists including Benjamin Banneker, who contributed to the early development of American technological fields, Daniel Hale Williams in medical sciences and others are discussed in the article.
