Alternating current (ac) losses in conductor-on-rounded-core (CORC) cables of YBCO high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes are a significant challenge in HTS power applications. This study employs two finite element analysis (FEA) models to investigate the contributions from different ac loss components and provide approaches for reducing ac losses in cables. An FEA model based on the T-A formulation treats the cross section of thin superconducting layers as 1D lines and, therefore, only can predict the ac loss generated by the perpendicular magnetic field. In contrast, the model based on H-formulation can be performed on the actual 2D rectangular cross section HTS tapes to provide the total ac losses generated by magnetic fluxes penetrating from both the edges and surfaces of HTS tapes, although this model requires more computing time and memory. The 1D and 2D simulation models were validated by cross comparing the results from both models and by comparing sub-section and full cross section models. Subsequently, two models relate cable design and operational parameters to the surface and edge losses of a two-layer CORC cable by considering the (1) relative contributions of edge and surface losses to the overall ac losses; (2) effect of the current distribution between inner and outer HTS layers on ac losses; (3) impact of the tape alignment on ac losses in each HTS layer; (4) influence of the thickness of HTS layers on ac losses; (5) effect of size and number of inter-tape gaps on ac losses; and (6) contribution frequency on the ac losses. The research results given in this paper are therefore not only valuable to suggest strategies for reducing ac loss in multi-layer cables but also for developing more accurate and effective methods to calculate ac loss in CORC HTS cables. Rationale: Atmospheric pressure matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP‐MALDI) mass spectrometry has enabled the untargeted analysis and imaging of neuropeptides and proteins in biological tissues under ambient conditions. Sensitivity in AP‐MALDI can be improved by using sample‐specific preparation methods. Methods: A comprehensive and detailed optimization strategy including instrument parameters, matrix spraying and sample tissue washing pretreatment was implemented to enhance the sensitivity and coverage of neuropeptides in mouse pituitary tissues by commercial AP‐MALDI mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). Results: The sensitivity of a commercial AP‐MALDI system for endogenous neuropeptides in mouse pituitary was enhanced by up to 15.2‐fold by shortening the transmission gap from the sample plate to the inlet, attaching copper adhesive tape to an indium tin oxide‐coated glass slide, optimizing the matrix spray solvent and using sample tissue washing pretreatment. Following careful optimization, the distributions of nine endogenous neuropeptides were successfully visualized in the pituitary. Furthermore, the quantitative capability of AP‐MALDI for neuropeptides was evaluated and the concentrations of neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin in the pituitary posterior lobe were increased approximately twofold under hypertonic saline stress. Conclusion: Mouse pituitary neuropeptides have emerged as important signaling molecules due to their role in stress response. This work indicates the potential of modified AP‐MALDI as a promising AP MSI method for in situ visualization and quantification of neuropeptides in complex biological tissues. For biomedical applications, hydroxyapatite and carbon nanotubes are currently being applied over duplex stainless steel (DSS) alone in order to increase corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. A composite of hydroxyapatite and multi-walled carbon nanotubes was used to improve biocompatibility, osseointegration, and corrosion resistance on 2205 DSS using electrophoretic deposition. The study investigates the effects of potential and time on the properties of the deposited layer in order to determine electrophoretic deposition factor values that are appropriate. The coating properties and effective groups of the phase resulting from this process are determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The antibacterial properties of E. coli bacterial strains are investigated for the coated layer. The adhesion between the hydroxyapatite and multi-walled carbon nanotube layers on the 2205 duplex stainless steel substrate was qualitatively evaluated using the adhesive tape test. It was found that the optimal suspension, which consists of 65 weight percent hydrogen acetate and 35 weight percent multi-walled carbon nanotubes, had a homogeneous morphology, a thick structure, and no cracks when coated at 50 V for two minutes. The tack of prepreg is a key factor affecting the automatic tape laying process. During the manufacturing process of large composite parts, prepreg material may be stored at room temperature for several days, resulting in a decrease in its tack. In this study, a new tack test tool was designed, and the decay rate of prepreg tack at different temperatures was tested. We proposed a prepreg tack decay model, which assumes that the main factor in tack decay is the reduction in resin chain activity during storage. The maximum deviation between the model calculation results and the experimental results of the tack decay rate is 9.7%. This study also proposed a new statistical unit for prepreg tack, which can establish the relationship between the tack of prepreg and its remaining storage time and reduce prepreg management costs. Plants can autonomously adjust their growth direction based on the gravitropic response to maximize energy acquisition, despite lacking nerves and muscles. Endowing soft robots with gravitropism may facilitate the development of self‐regulating systems free of electronics, but remains elusive. Herein, acceleration‐regulated soft actuators are described that can respond to the gravitational field by leveraging the unique fluidity of liquid metal in its self‐limiting oxide skin. The soft actuator is obtained by magnetic printing of the fluidic liquid metal heater circuit on a thermoresponsive liquid crystal elastomer. The Joule heat of the liquid metal circuit with gravity‐regulated resistance can be programmed by changing the actuator's pose to induce the flow of liquid metal. The actuator can autonomously adjust its bending degree by the dynamic interaction between its thermomechanical response and gravity. A gravity‐interactive soft gripper is also created with controllable grasping and releasing by rotating the actuator. Moreover, it is demonstrated that self‐regulated oscillation motion can be achieved by interfacing the actuator with a monostable tape spring, allowing the electronics‐free control of a bionic walker. Due to its adhesive properties, adhesive tape can potentially collect traces unrelated to the crime or relocate crime-relevant traces. This secondary transfer of traces can have crucial implications for the evaluation at the activity level. Therefore, this study investigated the secondary transfer of DNA between layers of adhesive tape and tape and other case- and laboratory-relevant substrates. A drop of diluted blood was deposited on different primary substrates (i.e. duct tape, metal, plastic, textile, nitrile gloves). Subsequently, the primary substrate was brought into contact with a secondary substrate, and DNA was collected from both surfaces to measure transfer rates. The highest transfer rates were detected between the adhesive side of the tape and plastic, whereas the lowest transfer rates were detected between the adhesive side and textile. It was shown that the adhesive readily collects DNA from plastic and nitrile gloves commonly used in the laboratory, which highlights the importance of working with DNA-free materials. Therefore, this study demonstrated the need for caution when interpreting traces on adhesive tapes, always taking possible situations of secondary transfer into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The NASICON-structured Na3MnZr(PO4)3 compound is a promising high-voltage cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this study, an easy and scalable electrospinning approach was used to synthesize self-standing cathodes based on Na3MnZr(PO4)3 loaded into carbon nanofibers (CNFs). Different strategies were applied to load the active material. All the employed characterization techniques (X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and Raman spectroscopy) confirmed the successful loading. Compared to an appositely prepared tape-cast electrode, Na3MnZr(PO4)3/CNF self-standing cathodes demonstrated an enhanced specific capacity, especially at high C-rates, thanks to the porous conducive carbon nanofiber matrix. Among the strategies applied to load Na3MnZr(PO4)3 into the CNFs, the electrospinning (vertical setting) of the polymeric solution containing pre-synthesized Na3MnZr(PO4)3 powders resulted effective in obtaining the quantitative loading of the active material and a homogeneous distribution through the sheet thickness. Notably, Na3MnZr(PO4)3 aggregates connected to the CNFs, covered their surface, and were also embedded, as demonstrated by TEM and EDS. Compared to the self-standing cathodes prepared with the horizontal setting or dip–drop coating methods, the vertical binder-free electrode exhibited the highest capacity values of 78.2, 55.7, 38.8, 22.2, 16.2, 12.8, 10.3, 9.0, and 8.5 mAh/g at C-rates of 0.05C, 0.1C, 0.2C, 0.5C, 1C, 2C, 5C, 10C, and 20C, respectively, with complete capacity retention at the end of the measurements. It also exhibited a good cycling life, compared to its tape-cast counterpart: it displayed higher capacity retention at 0.2C and 1C, and, after cycling 1000 cycles at 1C, it could be further cycled at 5C, 10C, and 20C. A new, field-portable method based on spark emission spectroscopy has been developed for on-site measurement of surface contamination for particulate metals. This method involves collection of a surface sample onto a piece of adhesive copper tape, followed by ablation and excitation by a spark discharge generated between a sharp electrode and the copper tape. The resulting atomic emissions are recorded using a spectrometer for elemental identification and quantification. The system was calibrated for Co, Cr, Fe and Mn using their characteristic emission lines. Detection limits were determined and found to be in the range of 3–19 ng cm−2 and measurement uncertainty was 35%. This approach was applied to the measurement of surfaces deposited with unknown loading of a welding fume sample, and results show a good agreement with those from standardized NIOSH method 9102. This method offers an alternative to the development of field-portable instruments for on-site, rapid determination of surface contamination for metals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Cephalometry is the measurement and study of the proportions of the head and face, and infant skull deformities have been the subject of many clinical studies over the last 30 years. Clinical protocols to document change are especially critical during periods of growth and development, but reference values and norms are lacking for infants, especially in the first year after birth. Discussion: Key publications were reviewed by the authors to provide a narrative review of the 1) origin of the cephalic index (CI), 2) adaptations of the measure over time, 3) anatomical landmarks and alignments used, 4) clinical tools, 5) necessary considerations for different ethnic, sex, and cultural influences, 6) value and limitations of CI measurements, and 7) appropriate use of the CI in the documentation of infant skull deformities. The CI calculation has remained constant since the 1840s, although the cranial shape classifications have changed many times over the years. Conclusions: Used in isolation, the two-dimensional (2D) and linear nature of the CI fails to describe the magnitude of the three-dimensional (3D) head deformity. However, the CI can and should be used in conjunction with other 2D and 3D measurements to provide a more detailed description and understanding of the entire cranial deformity. For today's cranial clinicians and allied health care professionals, the commonly referenced CI chart fails to reflect 1) the natural skull changes noted with supine sleeping infants, and 2) the cultural diversity of the infant population currently treated. Although the CI provides information about one of the most obvious features of the dysmorphology, clinicians must also document and report other distinct features such as frontal flattening or bossing, parietal shape or involvement, sloping, displacement, and/or posterior asymmetry. Clinical Relevance: The CI should be used in conjunction with other 2D and 3D anthropometric measurements to provide a more detailed assessment of the entire cranial deformity. The CI results should be discussed with the medical team along with a complete review of other 2D and 3D measurements to determine the best course of action for orthotic treatment or nontreatment of the head shape. The VEGA-3 laser system at the Centro de Láseres Pulsados delivers laser pulses up to 1 PW at 1 Hz repetition rate, focused to intensities up to 2.5 × 10 20 W cm−2. A versatile and compact solid target suitable for up to 0.05 Hz is presented which can operate in the challenging petawatt laser environment close to the laser-plasma interaction. Strips are spooled in a tape target system to deliver a solid density target to the laser focus for every shot. Results are presented for different tape materials and thicknesses, and a shot-to-shot standard deviation of the cut-off energy of 1.5% was obtained for Kapton reinforced aluminium tapes of 9 µ m thickness. Experimental ion spectra are recorded by a Thomson Parabola Ion Spectrometer coupled with a scintillator screen; and an antenna array is used for the characterization of electromagnetic pulses. Simple Summary: Hair tubes provide a non-invasive method for determining the presence and activity of small mammals by evaluating hair left in hair tubes. Data can be converted into activity indices. In this study, a specially adapted program was developed to semi-automatically determine hair density as a proxy of activity. Adhesive tape with hair from a field experiment was processed, scanned, and analyzed by the program to obtain a quantitative measure of hair density. The validation of hair tubes with wildlife cameras in the field showed a moderate-to-strong positive correlation between hair tube data and recorded rodents. The program is simple but effective and does not require a large amount of deep learning data. Due to its reduced complexity, it facilitates error detection and fine-tuning. The use of hair tubes in combination with this program should provide an easy-to-use, non-invasive method to determine small mammal activity. Activity indices are used to determine the presence and activity of small mammals, such as the hair index derived from the use of hair tubes. In contrast to trapping animals, hair tubes are non-invasive and less labor-intensive, and appear to be a suitable alternative in appropriate settings. We developed a method to calculate hair density semi-automatically. In addition, hair tube data were validated with field data using wildlife cameras for the small mammal community in grassland, wheat crops, and hedges to assess how well data from hair tubes match data from wildlife cameras. Adhesive tape with hair from hair tubes was processed and scanned. The resulting images were analyzed using a newly developed computer program that enables background and adhesive tape to be automatically distinguished from hair, providing a quantitative measure of hair density. Based on validation with wildlife cameras, hair tubes seem to be a suitable tool to estimate small mammal activity at the community level in several habitats. There was a moderate-to-strong positive correlation of the hair tube index with the sum of voles and Apodemus individuals (activity index) recorded in grasslands (Spearman's correlation coefficient 0.43), hedges (0.79), and wheat (0.44). Adhesive sealing tapes play an important role in ensuring the air tightness of the building, affecting the indoor microclimate and efficient energy use. However, there is still a lack of objective indicators that would demonstrate the ability of the sealing tape to ensure the long-term air tightness of the sealing joints of various building structures. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to investigate the indicators demonstrating the suitability of adhesive sealing tapes for sealing building structures of different surfaces and deformation, to provide detailed analyses of the results, and to propose practical recommendations. The investigated self-adhesive tapes differed in backing (nonwoven material, plastic reinforced film, paper, metal foil) and adhesives (acrylic and butyl). The materials of the sealed structural joints were plywood, OSB, plasterboard, cement sawdust board, plastered board, and plastic. The thickness, deformability, peel and shear adhesion of the self-adhesive tapes were used to determine its suitability for sealing of different structural joints. It was determined that tapes with higher deformability are more versatile, as they are suitable for sealing joints subjected to small and large deformations. The higher peel adhesion is typical for tapes of an air-permeable non-woven material backing and a thin adhesive layer. Tapes with a thicker adhesive layer are most suitable for sealing complex-shaped joints. Tapes with acrylic adhesive have a higher peeling force from smooth and moderately smooth surfaces, whereas butyl adhesive creates better contact with uneven surfaces in highly deformable joints. In this work, a simple and cost-effective method was proposed and developed to prepare a novel multilayer-structured Kevlar®@nickel-phosphorus-boron@copper@copper stearate (Kevlar®@Ni–P–B@Cu@CS) composite fabric with high conductivity, high flexibility, high hydrophobicity, and high durability to effectively shield electromagnetic interference (EMI). In this method, an amorphous Ni–P–B alloy nanolayer was initially deposited onto a Kevlar® fabric via electroless plating. Afterward, a crystalline Cu nanolayer was deposited as the second layer via electroplating. Finally, a monolayer of copper stearate was innovatively self-assembled as the outermost protective layer. The Cu deposition was effectively adjusted and designed by controlling the plating current and plating time. The electrical resistance and contact angle of the optimized Kevlar®@Ni–P–B@Cu@CS composite fabric were as low as 3.2 mΩ sq−1 and as high as 115.39°, respectively, indicating that the fabric could withstand bending, tape-off, corrosion, and accelerated environmental tests. The average EMI-shielding efficiency of the durable composite fabric was 93.9 dB in the frequency range of 8.2–12.4 GHz, which was mainly attributed to the absorption loss. Superconducting magnets are widely used in nuclear fusion reactors, high-energy particle accelerators, steady-state high magnetic fields, etc. Higher magnetic fields and higher operating temperatures are two application trends. High temperature superconducting (HTS) materials are the only choice for high temperature and high field magnets in the future. The first- and second-generation HTS materials have a typical tape structure; their critical performance is magnetic field angle and temperature dependent. A new test facility is developed for an experimental study on the an-isotropic critical current. The field angle can be changed from 0° to 360° with a resolution of 1°. The rotation deviation angle is measured to be 0.2° when the upper part rotates 90°. The temperature can be changed from 4.2 to 80 K. The temperature errors are ±50, ±80, and ±135 mK for 4.2–20, 20–40, and 40–80 K, respectively. The angle dependence of critical current (Ic) of the tested rare-earth barium copper oxide tape within 0°–30° is strong. From 30° to 90°, the sample Ic almost does not change with the magnetic field angle. The implementation of the project will not only promote the structural optimization of HTS tapes but also promote the miniaturization and economical application of HTS magnets. The supine position in unconscious patients resulted in the tongue falling back because of the loss of muscle tension which obstructed the upper airway. The head reclination opened the airway, however unexperienced rescuers faced difficulties in performing bagvalve-mask ventilation as it was hard to detect the optimal head position for opening the airway. The bag-valve-mask ventilation could be optimized if it indicated an optimized head angle to the rescuer. A digital sensor was attached to the face mask for measuring the degree of head reclination. Moreover, the face mask was equipped with an airway trainer and sealed via adhesive tape. The airway trainer was connected to a test lung and ventilated through pressure-controlled standard anesthesia machine (Pmax = 10 mbar, Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) = 0 mbar, f = 12/min). The head of airway manikin was tilted to 42 degrees starting from neutral position with a gradient of 2 degrees. The primary endpoint was the correlation of preset angles and digitally measured head position angles via the mask. In addition, the tidal and minute volumes were evaluated based on the head reclination. The preset and the digitally measured head position angles depicted correlation (R2 = 0.9895855684; p < 0.001). The tidal volume was 150 mL in head position angle of <10 degrees, 200 mL at 18 degrees, 450 mL at 25 degrees, and it levelled with about 500 mL at 30 degrees. In conclusion, digital head position angle was measured to detect the correct head position. A signal in the face mask could indicate the optimized head position to the first respondents or inexperienced rescuers in emergency ventilation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research attempts to fabricate a novel type of pressure‐sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape utilizing epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) as the primary component in an effort to reduce reliance on petrochemical polymers. This raw material comes from the natural renewable resources, making this tape a more environmentally friendly choice in reducing impact on the environment and alleviating resource pressure. The ester groups on ELO are subjected to hydrolysis in order to yield a combination of epoxy linseed oil fatty acids (ELFAs) containing both epoxy and carboxyl groups. By controlling the temperature and catalyst conditions, the epoxy and carboxyl groups undergo a ring‐opening reaction, resulting in the self‐polymerization of the ELFA mixture and the formation of hydroxy‐functionalized polymers. These polymers are then applied as a coating on kraft paper and subsequently cut to produce PSA tapes. The tapes produced using this method exhibit a peak peel strength of 20.538 N per 25 mm. Moreover, the incorporation of glycerol ester of rosin serves to enhance the peel strength, resulting in a higher value of 21.883 N per 25 mm. The utilization of sealing the cardboard box by the tapes also serves as validation for the immense capabilities of the tapes in practical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The work presents an experimental evaluation of the bonding strength of materials commonly used in printing industry, using double-sided adhesive tape and thermal adhesives. The study revealed changes in adhesive strength when bonding various types and structures of paper and cardboard surfaces, as well as laminated glossy and matte surfaces. The experimental study aims to identify surfaces that exhibit optimal adhesive tape adhesion. Moreover, there are also surfaces that should not be used with double-sided tape, but instead should be glued with thermal adhesives. In addition, the study examines the effect of different separation rates on the bond strength of these materials. The results provide valuable information about the adhesive properties of materials in the printing industry, providing useful information for professionals to optimize printing processes and ensure the production of high-quality and durable printed products. The data presented in this article can assist in selecting appropriate adhesives for a variety of printing applications, which will achieve consistent and reliable results and can greatly affect their quality and durability. Portable x‐ray fluorescence (XRF) is a reliable, rapid and noninvasive technique. Recently, it has been used in a wide variety of fields where the sample must still be available after examination or when qualitative information on chemical composition is needed quickly to perform more detailed studies. These properties also make it suitable for forensic investigations, as shown by some recent reports. In the present work, a systematic evaluation of metal micro traces in electric marks was performed in a case of death by electrocution (high‐voltage current). The results are promising, as XRF has been shown to be a suitable tool not only for skin fragments but also for graphite adhesive tapes placed on the body skin areas of forensic interest and then analyzed. The latter finding proves that skin samples at autopsy are not the only valuable sampling method, thus paving the way for the application of XRF in the diagnosis of electrical injuries in living individuals as well. A superconducting joint for multi-filamentary Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+ δ (Bi2223) tape, which has applications in nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging, has been developed based on incongruent melting and multi-junction methods. In this study, the critical current limit, optimal oxygen annealing conditions, and reproducibility of this joint are experimentally evaluated. The results indicate that the critical current limit of the joint at 77 K is determined by that of the tape. The critical current limit was estimated to be about 40 A. Additional oxygen annealing after heat treatment below 1143 K. appears to have no effect on the critical current, and that above 1153 K slightly increases the critical current. It is found that the multi-junction method effectively increases the reproducibility of obtaining a high critical current. To obtain a high critical current at 77 K, the highest temperature in the joint creation process should be lowered to near the incongruent melting temperature of Bi2223 (about 1133 K in air). Two Bi2223 coils, each with one joint (four junctions), were prepared and their persistent current at 77 K was tested. This work proposes two alternative analytical models to evaluate the ac losses of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes during their hysteretic and resistive modes. These models intend to extend the application range of state-of-the-art analytical models for current values higher than the critical one, i.e. for the resistive state, and to correctly predict the ac losses during the transition between the hysteretic and resistive modes. Two analytical models are proposed, one considering an extension of the Norris model for the HTS tape's resistive mode and the other based on a sigmoid function to characterize the hysteretic losses and their smooth transition to the resistive mode. Analytical models capable of estimating ac losses of superconducting (SC) tapes are an important tool for the design of complex SC systems, such as SC fault current limiters, SC electrical machines and SC cables. The proposed models are validated experimentally, for a 1st generation BSCCO tape and a 2nd generation REBCO tape. Finite element simulation is also carried out to verify the accuracy of the proposed models. Results show that the proposed extended-Norris model presents some deviation at the transition between the hysteretic and resistive modes, while the sigmoid model presents very accurate results for the whole spectrum of applied current. Background: Endotracheal tube fixation in ventilated patients must be appropriate to ensure security during mechanical ventilation and prevent skin lesions. The incidence of endotracheal tube‐caused pressure ulcers ranges from 7% to 45%. Various endotracheal tube fixations are used in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide. By pressure exercised on the skin, these systems could lead to mucosal and skin peri-oral lesions. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the two fixation systems most commonly used in French ICUs (adhesive elastic band versus fixation cord with PolyVinyl Chloride (PVC) sheath) on the incidence of these peri-oral skin lesions. Methods: This studyis a multicenter, open-label, controlled, superiority, cluster cross-over randomized trial. 768 patients will be recruited in the 16 ICUs involved. The inclusion of patients will be carried out over two 12-month periods. Each site begins with one of the evaluated fixation systems: elastic adhesive tape or cord associated with a protective sheath. After a 4-month break, each site switches to the other fixation system. The primary outcome is the development of at least one peri-oral lesion during the first ten days of maintaining an orally inserted endotracheal tube. The presence of lesions is assessed by a blinded adjudication committee using photographs taken daily. Discussion: This study is the first multicenter, randomized trial designed to evaluate the impact of elastic adhesive tape versus fixation cord with PVC sheath on the incidence of peri-oral lesions. For high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables carrying substantial currents, the current carrying capacity of a single YBCO tape is limited, and multiple tapes need to be connected in parallel. The current sharing design of parallel YBCO tapes has emerged as a central concern in the HTS cable design. However, various tape parameters, including critical current I c , n-value, and joint resistance, can significantly influence the current distribution in the system. In this paper, the influence of YBCO tape parameters on the current distribution characteristics of the cable was studied. The results showed that the current distribution and quench characteristics were regulated by tape I c , tape n-value, and tape joint resistance together, and that meanwhile, the total current also served as an important factor. Significant influence of the joint resistance was also observed in the event of a limited total current, which was no longer obvious for a total current close to the total I c . For the parallel tapes with the same I c , the one with higher resistance quenched later, while in the case of the same resistance, the effect of the tape I c is greater than that of the tape n-value. An epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a fibrocellular proliferation on the inner surface of the retina causing blurred and distorted central vision. Surgery is the only effective method for ERM removal. This paper investigated the mechanical properties of ERM peeling using the finite element (FE) method. A FE model of ERM formation on the retina surface was constructed. The failure criterion was applied to the attachment pegs to represent the adhesive force between the ERM and retina. The simulation results were consistent with the experimental data in published research. The maximum peeling force was 4.1 mN at a peeling velocity of 2 mm/s and an angle of 30°. The peeling force was minimum at the peeling angle of 45° and increased with the increase in peeling velocity and Young's modulus of the membrane. In this study, we manufactured dielectric alumina (Al 2 O 3) ceramic tapes incorporated with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) for applications on high-frequency substrates. The ceramic tapes were produced using the tape casting technique. Structural and morphological analyzes show the presence of hBN nanoplatelets dispersed in the Al 2 O 3 matrix, confirming the efficiency of the tape-casting technique and the sintering process. We verified that the crystalline structure of hBN is essential in the dielectric response, showing a reduction in dielectric losses with the incorporation of hBN into the Al 2 O 3 ceramic matrix, making ceramic tapes attractive in dielectric applications. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the tapes show satisfactory results, reinforcing our findings. Ni-impregnated Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2 and Y 0.08 Zr 0.92 O 2 fuel electrodes for solid oxide cells are manufactured by the combination of the freeze tape casting and infiltration techniques. Their morphological properties are investigated by scanning electron microscope and X-Ray microtomography while their electrochemical performance is evaluated in symmetrical Y 0.08 Zr 0.92 O 2 -supported button cells by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The microstructural analysis of the manufactured scaffolds highlights the characteristic anisotropy of porosity provided by the freeze tape casting method. The average tortuosity factor across the out of plane direction has been calculated equal to 1.38, being considerably lower than the average values of the other components, (τ x = 10.2) and (τ y = 6.87). The contribution provided by gas diffusion to the overall polarization resistance of the freeze tape cast electrodes has been estimated around 6·10−4 Ω cm2 in the 600–750 °C temperature range, thus lower than the best reported values for the state-of-the-art electrodes featuring sponge-like porosity. The measured impedance data highlighted the higher electrochemical performance of the Ni-impregnated Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2 architecture, holding a polarization resistance of 0.823 Ω cm2 at 750 °C, which is regarded as a very promising result for a ∼600 μm thick electrode. The interpretation of the impedance data was supported by the distribution of relaxation times analysis and the complex non-linear least square fit. In particular, the electrochemical investigation highlighted the presence of two major resistive contributions which have been ascribed to the occurrence of a chemical capacitance within the GDC10 lattice (low frequency contribution) and to the multi-layered architecture of the tested symmetrical cells which increases the contact losses (high frequency contribution). • The electrode design optimization is expected to increase its electrochemical performance. • Nanostructured graded porous electrodes for SOCs are shaped combining freeze tape casting and infiltration. • The anisotropy of gas diffusion channels is highlighted by the 3D reconstruction of the GDC10 scaffold. • The Ni-infiltrated GDC10 freeze tape cast scaffold is measured to be the best performing electrode architecture. • The electrochemical performance of the Ni-GDC10 electrode is mainly hindered by its low electronic conductivity. The use of capsaicin, a natural active compound for pain management, in various health products has continuously increased. Capsaicin has been shown to suppress pain by decreasing substance P; however, the safety information of capsaicin formulations requires support from numerous studies. For that reason, in this research, the skin irritancy of a capsaicin hydrogel transdermal patch was evaluated and compared to that of a commercial relief patch by in-vitro skin irritation and a human repeated insult patch test (HRIPT). In-vitro skin irritation of samples was performed using reconstructed human epidermis. The percentage of tissue viability was evaluated and compared. For HRIPT, it was tested in 60 volunteers. It was found that, from in-vitro skin irritation, 0.1%, 0.025% capsicum patches, blank patches, and commercial relief patches were classified as irritants. However, the result of the clinical HRIPT study revealed that only the 0.1% and 0.025% capsicum patches and the blank patches were irritants, not sensitizers. Additionally, it was found that an adhesive tape used to fix capsicum patches to the skin could probably induce skin irritation. In conclusion, 0.1%, 0.025% capsicum patches and blank patch were irritants but not sensitizers. Pediatric cervical spine injuries are rare, and the diagnosis and management can be challenging. Surgical intervention has been recommended in unstable odontoid synchondrosis injuries or those that have failed nonoperative measures. However, the literature remains sparse on the operative management of severe injuries due to the low incidence. An 18-month-old female sustained an unstable odontoid synchondrosis fracture from a motor vehicle accident. Due to ongoing instability after initial immobilization in a halo, the decision was made to proceed with surgical management. With the patient positioned prone and neural monitoring throughout, a posterior approach was utilized. Subperiosteal exposure of the C1 posterior arch was performed bilaterally. A spinal fixation band was passed under the right C1 posterior arch, around the C2 spinous process, under the left C1 posterior arch, and finally back under the C2 spinous process. The C1-C2 distraction was reduced using intraoperative imaging, and the sublaminar tape construct was secured and reinforced. The halo was then reattached. Postoperative recovery was complicated by a halo pin-site infection which was treated with oral antibiotics. The halo was removed after 3 months, following a computerized tomography that demonstrated union. X-rays at 6 months revealed anatomical alignment with the union. Surgery is recommended in pediatric odontoid synchondrosis fractures refractory to nonoperative management. Sublaminar taping of C1-C2 with a spinal fixation band has been demonstrated to be an effective surgical technique in the management of an unstable odontoid synchondrosis fracture. The alloy-reinforced Bi-2223 composite tapes can be used to realize high-magnetic field magnets, and its equivalent mechanical properties are important because of the great stress during the manufacturing and operation of magnets. Since the alloy-reinforced Bi-2223 tape has a complex structure, suitable analytical methods and equivalent models are necessary. The analysis of the equivalent mechanical properties is achieved by the mixture rule method and finite element simulation of simplified models. By using different simplified models, it is found that the single-filament elliptical model reduced computation time at most compared with the multi-filaments model, while the deviation from the experimental results is the minimum. It also shows that the details of the geometry in the models have little effect on the results. The results of the mixture rule method also agree with the experimental results, demonstrating that using the mixture rule method and simulation method of a single-filament elliptical model for mechanical analysis of alloy-reinforced Bi-2223 tapes is feasible. The evolution of the normal aerodynamic coefficient of 19 configurations of square plates with various porosity patterns, ranging from solid plate to homogeneous porous plate, is experimentally characterized. The variation of the porosity pattern is obtained by partially covering the holes of a commercial fly-swatter using adhesive tape. Evolution of the normal aerodynamic coefficient is assessed from the measurement of the angular position of the porous plate, placed as a freely rotating pendulum swept by a flow in a wind tunnel. These angular measurements are also supported by particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements of the structure of the wake. We show that the porosity pattern determines whether or not an abrupt stall occurs. Purpose: As it is known, the electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection design of integrated circuit is very important, among which the silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is one of the most commonly used ESD protection devices. However, the traditional SCR has the disadvantages of too high trigger voltage, too low holding voltage after the snapback and longer turn-on time. The purpose of this paper is to design a high-performance SCR in accordance with the design window under 0.25 µm process, and provide a new scheme for SCR design to reduce the trigger voltage, improve the holding voltage and reduce the turn-on time. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the traditional SCR, an RC-INV trigger circuit is introduced. Through theoretical analysis, TCAD simulation and tape-out verification, it is shown that RC-INV triggering SCR can reduce the trigger voltage, increase the holding voltage and reduce the turn-on time of the device on the premise of maintaining good robustness. Findings: The RC-INV triggering SCR has great performance, and the test shows that the transmission line pulse curve with almost no snapback can be obtained. Compared with the traditional SCR, the trigger voltage decreased from 32.39 to 16.24 V, the holding voltage increased from 3.12 to 14.18 V and the turn-on time decreased from 29.6 to 16.6 ns, decreasing by 43.9% the level of human body model reached 18 kV+. Originality/value: Under 0.25 µm BCD process, this study propose a high-performance RC-INV triggering SCR ESD protection device. We present a detailed description of the experimental technique and features of the research facility for low temperatures research. This publication describes the influence of residue monomers in synthesized pressure-sensitive adhesives based on acrylics on their main properties—tack, peel adhesion, shear strength and shrinkage—in the form of transfer tapes used for joining wooden elements in the furniture industry. The discussed carrier-free adhesive tapes are synthesized via photo-crosslinking and photopolymerization with UV radiation of the photoreactive prepolymers sandwiched between two adhesive siliconized polyester films. The simultaneous crosslinking and polymerization processes carried out under UV lamps placed simultaneously above and below the crosslinked photoreactive polymer layer lead to the production of a carrier-free adhesive film. The preliminary target of these studies was to investigate how the intensity of UV radiation and the time of its exposure affect the viscosity of the photoreactive compositions and the content of unreacted monomers in them. Next, the influence of the crosslinking agent concentration and UV irradiation time on the content of unreacted monomers after the crosslinking process was tested. The last step of the studies was the investigation of the influence of the residue monomer concentration on the application properties of the obtained pressure-sensitive adhesive layers. (1) Background: Mask-associated dry eye (MADE) has been associated with increased dry eye symptoms, apparently due to reduced tear break-up time (TBUT). This study aimed to determine the short-term impact of surgical face mask (FM) on tear film stability by measuring non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT). (2) Methods: Twenty-six healthy participants had NIBUT evaluated without FM, with surgical FM and with a surgical FM secured to the skin with adhesive tape (TFM). NIBUT-first was measured with Keratograph 5M (K5M, Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany). Each participant had NIBUT measured in four sessions on four consecutive days. Session 1: without FM vs. with FM. Session 2: with FM vs. without FM. Session 3: without FM vs. with TFM. Session 4: with TFM vs. without FM (3). The time between each measured setting was 2 min. Results: The mean ± SD NIBUT without FM was 8.9 ± 3.7, with FM 10.2 ± 4.1, and with TFM 8.4 ± 3.8 s. No significant differences were observed in NIBUT in any of the evaluated settings: without FM vs. with FM (p = 0.247), without FM vs. with TFM (p = 0.915), and with FM vs. with TFM (p = 0.11). (4) Conclusions: This study did not find a significant short-term effect of FM on NIBUT. The main task in creating high-current cables based on HTSC-2 wires for thermonuclear installations is to maximize the resistance of the cable to mechanical stresses. Its solution is directly related to the strength of the HTSC-2 wires, which is determined by the supporting steel tape substrate. Therefore, the diagnosis of stresses in the carrier tape is of particular importance. The only direct method for measuring internal strains and residual stresses inside a material is neutron stress diffractometry. However, its application to thin steel tapes is limited by the intensity of the neutron beam. In this study, by the example of a 100-µm-thick AISI 310S stainless steel tape applied as a substrate in manufacturing HTSC-2 wire at the National Research Center Kurchatov Institute, it is shown that this restriction can be circumvented if the measurements are carried out on stacks of tapes similar to HTSC stacks in high-current cables. In this approach, the diagnosis with neutron stress diffractometry is performed on the AISI 310S tape as delivered, after mechanical polishing, and after applying a YSZ buffer layer. The high sensitivity of the method is noted, which makes it possible to determine the crescent-shaped deformation of the tape and the degree of its stretching after mechanical polishing and to measure the residual stresses arising during the deposition of the YSZ layer. The results obtained show that the neutron stress diffractometry has good prospects for diagnosing internal strains and stresses in HTSC stacks of high-current cables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To create a highly efficient photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) system and maximise the energy and exergy efficiency, this study aims to propose an innovative configuration of a PV-T system comprising wavy tubes with twisted-tape inserts. Following the validation of a numerical model, a parametric study has been conducted to assess the geometrical effects of twisted tape and wavy tubes, as well as the coolant fluid type and velocity, on the overall performance of a PV-T system, located in Shiraz, Iran. It is found that employing twisted tape improves the energy and exergy efficiency by approx. 6.3%. The best configuration yields 12.4% and 16.8% increase in energy and exergy efficiency compared to conventional PV systems. This is achieved at 15% volumetric concentration of microencapsulated phase change material slurry. The monthly variation of global horizontal irradiance in Shiraz highly affected the energy and exergy efficiency of PV-T, with July and October exhibiting the most efficient months, corresponding to 90% and 11.3%, respectively. New concepts for Tokamak fusion reactors are enabled by ReBCO high temperature superconductors, either to achieve toroidal magnetic fields in the range of 20 T, and/or by operating temperatures above 4.2 K, e.g., 20 K. The application of ReBCO tapes is challenging because common techniques for the manufacturing and quench protection of magnets, developed for classical multifilamentary superconductors, such as NbTi and Nb3Sn, cannot be applied directly. Less risky would be the use of a ternary molybdenum chalcogenide (TMC) superconductor, which was under development before the discovery of high temperature superconductors. Although a low temperature superconductor, the upper critical field is extremely high resulting in a comparable field dependence of the critical current to ReBCO. Because of the improved superconductor fraction of a multifilamentary TMC conductor, the expected engineering current density can be one order of magnitude higher. In addition, a TMC conductor has the potential for cost efficiency and a performance index around 1 $/kAm at 20 T seems be possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, FRP composites are widely applied in the construction industry. Their inherent characteristics are used to strengthen structural elements made of various materials and to increase their durability. The following paper contains the results obtained in a conducted research program aimed at determining the ability to improve the durability of epoxy resin modified with the sonication process, microsilica and carbon nanotubes. The adhesive modified was used to adhere a CFRP tape to a concrete surface. Changes in the viscosity, physicochemical parameters and adhesion of the resin were studied. Selected parameters of the concrete substrate prepared using the sandblasting method, determined with the contact profilometry, were also taken into account. During the tests, attention was paid to the thorough execution and preparation of the samples. As a result of the research, it was demonstrated that the adhesion of the modified epoxy adhesive to concrete could be increased by approximately 28% in the case of the addition of carbon nanotubes and by up to 66% in the case of the addition of microsilica. The modifications used, in addition to increasing the adhesion of the resin to the concrete substrate, were also aimed at reducing the weakening of the adhesive joints caused by oxidation of the resin over time. This study aimed to enhance the performance of Ag-stabilized high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes with a focus on reducing magnetization losses. Two approaches were employed: dividing the tapes into narrower widths and introducing striation at the level of the superconducting layer. The process of laser ablation proved to be an effective method for implementing these modifications. The quality of the cut edges and grooves was assessed using scanning electron microscopy. To evaluate the electrical properties, measurements were conducted on the critical current and magnetization loss in samples at different stages: in their initial state, after cutting, and after the striation process. Of the two modifications, the striation process more effectively reduced the AC losses in the HTS tapes, approximately by one order of magnitude. The retention of critical current remained high after cutting, but varied with the number of created filaments after the striation process. Subsequently, a short cable was wound from the cut and striated HTS tape. This cable demonstrated a remarkable sixfold reduction in AC losses compared to the initial HTS tape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this experimental study, we aimed to determine the combined effect of circular and semicircular cuts on twisted tape inserts in a double pipe heat exchanger operating in a turbulent regime with a Reynolds number ranging from 4000 to 18000. The insert used had circular cuts on the neutral axis and semicircular cuts on the edges. The diameter of the cuts was varied between 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm for twisted tapes with twist ratios (x/b) of 4.5, 5.5, and 6.5. To reduce errors and increase automation, we employed the internet of things approach to measure additional input and output parameters, as well as cold and hot flow rates. This approach yielded more reliable results by minimizing human intervention. The findings of the present study indicate that the definite modifications in twisted tape led to a significant improvement in thermohydraulic performance metrics. Compared to other types of cuts, the circular and semicircular cut twisted tapes with x/b = 4.5 and φ = 8 mm achieved the most competitive enhancement in thermohydraulic properties.
