Despite a growing body of scholarship exploring university–organization collaborations in the sport for development (SfD) field, there has been limited consideration of the experiences of practitioners and partnering organizations in these partnerships. The purpose of this study was to examine their experiences when partnering with academic institutions, programs, scholars, and/or students, with a specific focus on research and evaluation partnerships. Interviews were conducted with 22 participants working at 20 SfD organizations in the United States. Findings were organized into six main categories (e.g., motivations, factors that facilitate or impede collaboration, collaboration outcomes). A conceptual process framework for university–organization collaboration emerged from the data. This study is one of the first in the SfD field to examine practitioners' perspectives of university–organization collaborations centered on research and evaluation activities. This paper investigates the relationship between competition and innovation using a worldwide dataset of manufacturing and service industries. The sample comprises the world's top corporate R&D spenders listed in the EU 2017 industrial R&D Scoreboard, and the analysis covers the years spanning 2007 to 2016. We use an industry-year indicator, the inverse of the Lerner Index, to measure the competition level prevailing between these large R&D companies. R&D expen d itures are used as a proxy for innovation. The model is estimated using two-stage least squares to control for the potential endogeneity of the competition indicator. Our contributions are three-fold. Firstly, we examine the innovation-competition nexus at the worldwide level, thus extending the geographical coverage of previous studies. Secondly, we analyze the relationship separately for manufacturing and service industries, characterized by different technological and knowledge-based regimes. Finally, we distinguish between incumbents and new entrants in the worldwide market. Our findings confirm the existence of an inverted-U shaped relationship between competition and innovation and show that this relationship differs between manufacturing and service industries. The results also reveal that the effect of competition on innovation varies between incumbents and new entrants. Our paper contributes to the existing literature by providing novel empirical evidence on the innovation-competition nexus based on a global sample and addressing previous studies' limitations. The article discusses the New Voices program established by the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) in 2018. The program aims to bring diverse and innovative perspectives from early- and mid-career leaders to important discussions on how science, engineering, and medicine shape the global future. The program selects members through a competitive application process and supports them in enhancing scientific and policy solutions to national and global challenges. The article emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the program and the importance of inclusivity and diversity in scientific research and policymaking. The program has initiated various projects, including the development of an AI chatbot for organizing and sharing public health information, examining the impact of climate change on engineering design, and promoting science diplomacy and diversity in STEM fields. The program has also provided opportunities for members to engage in NASEM activities and global events, contributing to their career advancement and the advancement of science. Synchrotron facilities, such as MAX IV, are becoming crucial tools for materials and process research, as well as catalysts for interdisciplinary and cross-organizational collaborations. These facilities, particularly fourth-generation synchrotrons like MAX IV, provide brilliant X-rays and fast detectors, offering a unique toolbox for material science and innovation in the shift towards a sustainable society. However, the knowledge of utilizing these tools is not widespread enough in the industry. Collaborative platforms, such as the MetalBeams network in the metals industry, the Treesearch platform in the forest industry, and the Northern Lights on Food initiative in the food industry, are examples of successful efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry and maximize the potential of synchrotron facilities. Expanding these collaborative platforms to other sectors and involving industry in the evolution of research infrastructures can further enhance sustainable innovation. [Extracted from the article]

The South African bioeconomy strategy did not clearly articulate the measurement framework to monitor the implementation of the strategy. This paper provides an analysis of bioeconomy patents, the most prolific organizations and citations at the EPO and USPTO for South Africa, BRICS, Egypt and Nigeria during the Ten-Year Innovation Plan 2008–2018. The terms 'biotechnology', 'medical technology', 'pharmaceuticals' and 'selected environment-related technologies' were used to search for patents. The OECD patents by technology, the EPO PATSTAT and the USPTO PatFT databases were used to map patents and citations. The results show that South Africa ranked last in the BRICS group but produced a higher number of patents than Egypt and Nigeria. The number of patents generally decreased for the selected countries except for China. The total citations for the selected countries was generally inconsistent. The important innovators for South Africa in the bioeconomy are mainly universities and public research institutions. A new fiscal approach to encourage knowledge application in bioeconomy in South Africa is required. Incentives from government that encourage collaboration between research institutions and industry to direct research with industry application are required. Open innovation is a concept of collaboration of ideas, knowledge, and resources that originates from within the organization and involves external organizations. University-industry collaboration is a factor driving innovation and competitiveness. Most research on interactions between universities and industry concentrated on the industrial side meanwhile, universities, as knowledge producers, play a vital role in creating an open innovation ecosystem that encourages realizing innovations that benefit society. Therefore, the problem raised in this research is how university collaboration can support open innovation. This research aims to identify research trends, the latest technologies, and inter-university collaboration frameworks that can support open innovation. The methodology used is Kitchenham's Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and bibliometric. SLR consists of Identification Study, Selection Studies, Quality Assessment, Data Extraction and Study Synthesis. From the SLR stages, 21 papers published between 2019 and 2023 were obtained. Synthesis and additional literature review were carried out to identify trends, technologies, and frameworks related to the topic comprehensively. In terms of trend, based on the application bibliometric, it was found that there was an increase in the number of publications and the top list of open innovation journals. University collaboration in open innovation more frequently takes place in the UK, and the industries mostly involved are small-medium enterprises. Quantitative research methodology and data analyses, comprising of hypothesis test, regression test, and descriptive statistics, are mostly preferred. Meanwhile, descriptive data analysis is the most common means of qualitative data analysis. Numerous suggestions on topics for future research were also identified. In addition, data analysis using machine learning survival data is identified as a novelty among data analysis methods. Technology transfer and the use of digital platforms may support open innovation processes, and the use of blockchain technology may promote digital platforms development. Seven domains form the framework for university collaboration in open innovation, namely Social Behavior, People, Process, Organization, Environment, Technology, and Performance. The findings of trends, technologies, and frameworks in this research may serve as a foundation for research on similar topics, and the identified framework domains could serve as framework components that might be used by universities to collaborate with partners in implementing open innovation processes. The research have contributes to knowledge management theoretically and practically. Theoretically, open innovation can expand the knowledge base by supporting the concept that knowledge and expertise can be found outside organizational boundaries. Practically, it can enrich knowledge management practices by emphasizing the importance of utilizing digital platform technology in supporting knowledge management sourced from external knowledge and collaboration services in the open innovation process. Purpose: The growth and development of defence industries are essential to improve deterrence and national security. One way to develop such industries is to acquire technology-based firms that, in addition to improving the ability to manufacture new products, can help them meet their operational and strategic goals. Since the valuation of such firms is considered one of the complexities of acquisition, this paper aims to propose a model for their valuation according to the ecosystem of defence industries. Design/methodology/approach: To create the model, first the literature in this field has been investigated. Also, the comments and proposals of senior managers, technical designers and experts, economic and financial specialists, and R&D experts in the defence industries have been surveyed and then, the valuation criteria for technologybased firms have been identified using the fuzzy screening technique. Next, by using the fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the relative importance coefficients for components, criteria, and subcriteria have been determined, and the valuation model has been developed. Finally, the function of estimating the value of technology-based firms that can be acquired in the Department of Defense (DOD) has been formulated. The study was carried out at the end of 2022 in DOD strategic organizations. Findings: Since knowledge and intellectual properties are the most significant pillars and competitive advantages of technology-based firms, the results showed that the “intangible assets” criterion is the most significant one for the valuation of firms by a weight of 0.449. Following the criterion are the tangible assets, and the major risks with a weight of 0.351, and 0.20, respectively. In this study, the strategic role and importance of technology-based firms for the defence industries, their synergy with these industries, the protection requirements, as well as the stability and durability of the technologybased firms in the condition of disruption were introduced as specific criteria in the valuation model for the firms. Also, the result of the sensitivity analysis indicated that the ranking of options is the most sensitive subject to changes in the importance and weight of intangible assets and the main risk. Research limitations/implications: One of the limitations of the research is that this study was not conducted in a specific defence industry such as electronics and radar, energy-rich materials, chemical, air, or marine industries, and was comprehensively planned in all industries. Since tangible, and intangible assets or even risks may be different in each of such industries, this issue leads to the cautious use of the model in each of these specialized areas. Another limitation was the research statistical population, which only included university professors, senior managers and financial managers of defence industries. Although using the opinions of capital market valuation experts venture capitalists and expert valuation experts of the country's innovation and knowledge ecosystem for further validation of the model and criteria statistics and to specify the specific conditions of valuation in the defence environment, seemed useful, there were limitations in their assessment. Originality/value: Proposing a hybrid model including tangible and intangible assets and considering risks, and also considering the key criteria of the defence sector such as strategic importance, synergy stability and durability of firms, as well as providing functions for estimating the value of technology- base firms that can be acquired in DOD are considered as the two of the most important aspects of contributions and innovations of this research. The current model provides a systematic and scientific plan for defence industry managers and experts who can use it in the valuation of companies that can be acquired in the defence industry and be sure that their interests are taken into account. This paper aims to investigate the impact of education factors on the relationship between corruption and the Ease of doing business in Central and Eastern Europe. We employed a regression analysis using panel data from 20 CEE countries between 2010 and 2017. Our findings argue that the impact of the perceived levels of public sector corruption on the Ease of doing business score is accentuated when a society is characterized by a higher level of quality of education systems and management schools, a better collaboration university-industry in the field of research, and a higher quality of scientific research institutions. Purpose: University–industry (UI) collaboration is essential for knowledge and technology exchange between higher education institutions and industries, enabling enterprises to accelerate innovation. However, few studies have investigated the collaborative innovation mechanism through which UI collaboration can enhance the accumulation of firms' intellectual capital (IC) and how this, in turn, affects their innovation-driven development. Design/methodology/approach: Drawing from the knowledge management and collaborative innovation theory, this research proposes a theoretical framework of the inter-organization relationship between enterprises and universities to investigate the influence mechanism of UI collaboration, including academic engagement and commercialization, on corporate performance as well as the mediating role of IC by employing survey that covers 177 UI collaborations. Findings: Empirical results show that human capital and relational capital fully mediate the relationship between academic engagement UI collaboration and corporate economic performance, while human capital partially mediates the relationship between commercialization UI collaboration and corporate economic performance. Additionally, structural capital and relational capital partially mediate the relationship between academic engagement and corporate innovation performance, while structural capital fully mediates the relationship between commercialization and corporate innovation performance. Originality/value: This study empirically investigates how academic engagement and commercialization impact corporate performance (i.e. innovation dimension or economic dimension). The ongoing pandemic and increasing frequency of infectious disease outbreaks due to climate change, urbanization, and global human migration have put great focus on nucleic acid amplification‐based diagnostic technologies (NAAT). These methods can provide gold standard accuracy and sensitivity, and their widespread availability at the point‐of‐care is crucial for managing the spread of pathogens in human and animal populations, as well as for environmental surveillance. However, so far the reach of NAAT‐based platforms has mostly remained limited to centralized facilities in the hand of trained workers, causing great distress in times of need. In this review, the current state‐of‐the‐art research, as well as, commercial diagnostic products, is highlighted, their performances are discussed, and the role of academic‐industrial collaborations in developing the next generation of breakthrough technologies is emphasized. It is envisioned that with these collaborations, the next generation of autonomous, affordable, and mobile NAAT devices can be developed, for a broad range of targets, and for providing truly democratized access to NAAT diagnostics for the global population in the future. This paper aims at investigating the various factors driving technological and non-technological innovations in the manufacturing and service sectors in Ghana. We argue that numerous previous studies have shown that digitalization, firms' collaborations, access to finance, engaging in research and development and certain firm characteristic such as age, size and ownership influence firms' aptitude and incentives to be innovative. However, in the context of developing countries like Ghana, we do not know whether these same determinants also have positive effects on stimulating innovations at the firm-level. Using a sample of 549 firms sourced from the World Bank Enterprises Survey conducted between 2007 and 2013, this study finds that the adoption of digitalization promotes non-technological (organizational) innovations than technological innovations. We also find that firms' innovation collaboration with consultants and universities rather exert no impact on technological and non-technological innovations. Our finding show that internal R&D enhance technological innovations and not non-technological innovations. The main practical implications of the study are that attempts to boosting firm-level and developing countries innovation potentials should mainly focus on improving internal R&D and innovation support activities, expanding access to finance, and upgrading Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure to enhance digitalization. The university-industry contractual research collaborations to solve complex problems jointly and create social and economic impact have long existed. Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) constitute formal technology intermediaries established to strengthen university-industry collaborations. However, the differences in needs and capabilities, individual and organizational backgrounds, and innovative learning modes inhibit effective partnerships. We develop a conceptual framework that explains how TTOs can catalyze these collaborations in Botswana. We use the grounded theory approach to examine the TTOs' challenges and opportunities in strengthening university-industry linkages. Notably, we employ inductive analysis to synthesize interview data and analyze it using domain analysis and componential analysis. Data were extracted from the university and industry policies and documents and interviews with 102 participants from two universities (42.2%) and three industry firms (57.8%) involved in technology transfer. We found 71.6% had excellent knowledge and experience and 28.4% had varying degrees of experience. While individual or independent consultancies (44.1%) lead, TTOs facilitate collaboration through contractual research agreements (32.4%), technology licensing (22.5%), and joint ventures (10.8%). This demonstrates entities' significant access to each other's financial and technological resources. This allows entities to generate new knowledge, equip each other with tools and competencies required to produce commercial products and new revenue streams. Most significantly, while Botswana has displayed remarkable progress toward strengthening its institutional support systems for technology transfer and commercialization, there is a shortage of IP expertise at universities and industries, possibly leading to low levels of IP awareness. Also, most institutions have incomplete IP strategies, and there is inadequate administration and enforcement of intellectual property rights systems at the national level, possibly contributing to low national IP filings. Therefore, we recommend entities fully engage in vigorous IP activities, review and finalize their IP policies and make them flexible yet equitably based on the needs of the collaborating industry firms. Along with its unprecedented economic rise over the past several decades, debates about China's soft power push have become heated. Yet, consensus on what exactly constitutes China's soft power has not been reached. Findings of how resources of Chinese soft power play their roles in the national strategy for global rise are conflicting and lacking empirical rigor. In a much-altered context of China's recent grand initiatives, the prism of higher education and the region of Southeast Asia both are uniquely significant for interpreting soft power agenda of China. This article aims to capture the recent changes in China's soft power through a case study analysing the experiences and perceptions of Cambodian participants from China's higher education programs covering language training, educational development aid, student mobility, and institution/program partnerships. The evidence identifies four emerging resources of Chinese soft power: contemporary life appeal, advancement in science and technology, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education reputation, and economic development model. It further highlights the Belt and Road Initiative as a stimulus for amplifying the influence of the Chinese development model in Southeast Asia, whereas China's domestic coordination of different players and an ideal mix of soft power resources still have not been formulated. A Call for Collective Organizing in Puerto Rico's Coffee-Growing Communities: The future of the island's coffee farming tradition hangs in the balance. Despite the enormous obstacles, farmers and farmer-support organizations continue to push for changes in the industry and to promote a return to shade-grown and less intensely managed coffee farming. In our interviews with coffee farmers conducted in 2020 and 2021, multiple participants noted the need for a campaign to give coffee-farming communities more decision-making power and political leverage. Commonly celebrated agricultural traditions and events, such as town farmers markets and the large annual Fiesta del Acabe coffee festival in Maricao, show that cultural programming supporting and celebrating coffee farming would likely be well-received. The scientific school of Alexander Frumkin, a world-renowned electrochemist born in Chisinau, was at the origin of the electrochemical science in the Republic of Moldova. Research directions, such as high-rate anodic dissolution, plasma electrochemical treatment, electrical methods for mass transfer control, identified as "extreme electrochemistry", and the electrochemical nanostructuring, have been significantly developed at the national level from both fundamental and applicative viewpoints. Moreover, the European cooperation considerably broadened the opportunities for Moldovan electrochemists in the related areas such as materials science and surface engineering. The present review highlights the main scientific contributions of Moldovan researchers to the world information process related to the above mentioned domains and to the academic–industrial collaboration. Startups are key components of the National Innovation Systems (NISs) and have contributed to sustainable development in many countries. This is because of their ability to create employment opportunities and contribute to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Hence, universities across the world have identified the importance of entrepreneurship training for students to help enhance their capability to develop their own startups. This study seeks to find ways of enhancing the profitability of student startups to galvanize industrial development. The approach adopted was the development of a hybrid model to optimize the development of entrepreneurship skills in university students based on existing theories and literatures. Data of 212 Korean universities were used and the results show that research fund, size of dedicated faculty, size of dedicated staff (academic and non-academic), practical entrepreneurship courses, and non-regular curriculum startup activities are key factors responsible for the profitability of student startups. Purpose: The literature stresses the importance of collaboration patterns and the role of public funding in regional competitiveness. This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of this subject by focusing on two key dynamics of technological cooperation. First, the authors focus on the ability of public funding to support regional technological demand through the promotion of science and technology-based innovation (STI) and innovation based on learning-by-doing, learning-by-using, learning-by-interacting (DUI) cooperation. Second, the authors investigate whether such cooperation patterns influence the companies' ability to support the development of novel products through the effective transfer of knowledge. Design/methodology/approach: The data used in this longitudinal study are taken from the Basque statistics agency's (EUSTAT) technological innovation survey, which compiles activities, personnel, funding sources, support institutions and other innovation-related aspects of businesses in the Basque region. The survey was carried out following the methodology of the community innovation survey (CIS). CIS data are used to generate official innovation statistics for the EU and its member countries and have been used extensively for analysis in economics. The sample included an unbalanced panel of 17,431 companies that reported research and development expenditure for the period 2013‐2017. Findings: The results of the analysis confirm that the relationship between STI cooperation and regional funding is positive (Piñeiro-Antelo and Lois-González, 2019), but regional DUI cooperation will have a greater impact than STI cooperation on a company's ability to generate novel products. The authors can, therefore, say that public funding is successful at supporting cooperation between science and technology agents and firms but fails to promote the transfer of knowledge and subsequent development of novel products in companies in the region. Practical implications: Following a quadruple helix approach, it is important to underline the need for public policies to strengthen the connections between all the key agents in the ecosystem (where the research community, industry, public sector and citizens are all active actors), promoting technology transfer and dissemination, as well as trust among the parties, absorptive capacity and business access to resources and financing. Thus, the design of public policies should be oriented to support a firm's innovation, balancing the exploration and exploitation of STI and DUI regional cooperation. Originality/value: The contribution of this research is threefold. First, it serves to emphasize the importance of the impact of regional innovation systems on business innovation modes and their performance. Second, it takes the study of innovation systems and their impact on companies a step further by examining the impact of public funding on the companies' ability to explore and exploit regional innovation modes. Thirdly, the authors offer a dynamic view of the region's ability to support its own demand for technology and study the impact of regional business modes on the firms' ability to support novel products. University-industry collaborations have been largely met with skepticism and resistance from faculty critics, who are concerned about the Academy adopting market-like behaviors and relying too heavily on industry. Yet, the pressures to engage in collaborations with industry, particularly to provide capital for universities, are likely to continue to increase. Guided by the capital-skill hypothesis, this study seeks to examine these realities through a case of a university-industry collaboration. We use an action research approach to analyze a collaboration between an academic college with a non-corporate centric focus at a public research university and a corporate entity within the healthcare field in which the college was contracted to develop a diversity, equity, and inclusion plan for the healthcare company. Findings illustrate how universities and industry can mutually benefit from collaborations when they adhere to what the authors refer to as the complementarity investment framework. Generated from the findings, this framework consists of four UIC design components: (a) the parties identify and clarify their roles, activities, and contributions to manage expectations; (b) the parties participate in learning exchanges, which are significantly valued as a component to this UIC; (c) the parties are open to experiences including unintended, yet positive, outcomes emerging from the UIC; and (d) the parties capitalize on the expert development by guiding and mentoring students as apprentices. Topics include the development of two complementary hubs, "Biotech" and "Social Impact," attracting a diverse range of tenants, and contributing to the region's growth in life science innovation and job creation.

It is well known that innovation in the modern economy is driven by interactions among the stakeholders that make up the innovation system. Effective interactions among key actors in an innovation system foster flow of knowledge and resources development and commercialization of new products. This study assesses the depth of research and development (R&D) and level of interaction existing among key elements in the Nigerian pharmaceutical industry. Data were obtained from thirty-two manufacturing pharma firms, and sixty-nine researchers from faculties of pharmacy across Nigerian universities and three key research institutes with drug-related mandates. The results reveal poor synergy in research among the actors, and weak academia-industry interaction as only about one-third of industrial firms indicated active collaboration with knowledge institutions. More pertinently, over two-third of researchers in universities rated research-industry collaborations on most of the key aspects considered to be at least weak, Contract research and joint R&D activities were equally rated weak. The study concludes that the pharma innovation system in Nigeria requires serious government interventions by creating robust platform to promote productive interactions between these actors. During the past five years, the Government of Tanzania has reinvigorated its power generation capacity significantly to ensure smooth execution of its industrialization agenda and cope with the fourth industrial revolution. To ensure reliable availability of power to sustain its growing economy, Tanzania embarked on a deliberated measure to forge an energy mix. This deliberate measure encompasses the use of renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar, biomass, wastes, and micro hydro; natural gas; and other energy sources which are locally available including coal and geothermal. To effectively and efficiently manage such a growing power system and make electricity accessible to all for higher levels of industrial investment and services, the adoption of the smart grid technologies becomes inevitable. This article, tried to unveil possible potential research areas in which scholars, through academia-industry collaborations, can dwell to ensure that the Tanzania smart grid concept is seamlessly realized and maintained, with the expected efficacy. On May 5, 2023, the World Health Organization declared the end of the Public Health Emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic across the planet. The authors highlight that high work demands, the perceived workload and work-family conflicts contribute to health-care professionals' intention to leave their organisations. In the second paper, [3] investigate the effects of various work-related stress factors (e.g. polychronicity, job autonomy, perceived workload, work-family conflict, and high work demand) on health-care employees' turnover intention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, more than encouraging people's engagement and the development of HC and organisations, we need to manage and improve this main element of the IC, working hard so that people are valued. Purpose: This study aims at advancing the understanding of University-Industry Collaboration (UIC) by proposing an adapted conceptual model for comprehensive contextual analysis taking industry perspective and identifying effective mechanisms for stimulating UIC in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Design/methodology/approach: This study was designed as a multicase qualitative study. Data were collected through interviews of focus groups representing 26 agro-processing companies operating in Rwanda. The process consisted of two sessions evaluating the current collaboration patterns, and two sessions identifying the desired future and the mechanisms to realize it. Data were analyzed using ATLAS.ti software with the grounded theory techniques. Findings: Findings indicate that current interactions are unidirectional and focus on educational collaboration. Results are short-term and do not yield sufficient benefit for the companies involved. Industry aspirations for future collaboration were identified, along with linkages between inputs, activities and outcomes. Research limitations/implications: This study has two noteworthy limitations. First, this study did not consider the capacity of firms to collaborate. Second, for simplification purposes, this study did not integrate other complementary sources of knowledge for firms. To overcome these omissions, a short introduction of University–Industry Collaboration (UIC) was presented to participants highlighting and justifying the scope of the study. As research implications, this paper presents a new integrated conceptual framework, which can be useful for studies focusing on a comprehensive analysis of the UIC context and identifying effective mechanisms for improvement in the future. A construct of policies that stimulate UIC is proposed, thereby facilitating further operationalization and testing of context-specific hypotheses on policy stimuli. Practical implications: In practice, the identified conceptual framework allows to holistically capture and reflect on the interrelationships between UIC factors and outcomes for a specific context, hence, informing better UIC decision-making. In this way, this paper advances the operationalization of the argument for reconciling organizational theories with their practices. Social implications: This paper presents a systemic means for organizational theories to perform their adaptive role in society. Indeed, as demonstrated by the empirical results, the proposed framework is effective not only in systematically assessing the current situation, but also in predicting the desired state in the future. In other words, the proposed framework facilitates prescience theorizing, which is a mechanism for ensuring that organizational theories adapt to future requirements of the society. Originality/value: This study develops a new integrative conceptual framework to accommodate the interaction between UIC's institutional decision-making and existing macrolevel frameworks of innovation ecosystems. In terms of methodology, the value of this study lies in its adoption of an ex ante approach to the development of mechanisms to stimulate UIC. Summary: Motivation: Neither state planning nor economic liberalization has allowed developing economies to escape from the middle‐income trap, owing mainly to institutional voids and hindering institutions. We need another explanation for development and the emergence of new institutions. Purpose: How have biopharmaceutical enterprises emerged in Iran, despite the obstacles faced? Can the collaborative agency of small groups of actors who know each other create new institutions and hence the conditions for biopharmaceutical firms to emerge? If so, who participates in such small groups, and how do they operate? Methods and approach: We interviewed 29 key participants and stakeholders in the Iranian bio‐pharma industry. We used grounded theory to identify key themes. Findings Bio‐pharma emerged owing to the efforts of a small group who successfully worked together to master the technology, to overcome institutional obstacles and widespread scepticism within Iran, and thereby to create new firms manufacturing biopharmaceuticals. The group succeeded because it was morally committed to creating the industry; it proceeded pragmatically, experimenting and learning; and leadership was shared and collective. Policy implications: In this case, we see the inverse of a top‐down process where government acts as principal and firms act as agents. Instead, strategic collaboration across government, university and firms, in a process of trial and error, has been able to make great progress to overcome obstacles to technical innovation that seem daunting for a middle‐income country. This paper explores the university, industry and government (UIG) research and development (R&D) collaborations that academia in South African higher education institutions (HEIs) with clothing-related programmes engage in. In the research on which the paper is based, Fashion, Consumer Science, Textiles and Clothing Management academia were purposively sampled to gather data regarding the UIG R&D collaborations. Data collection was conducted through an online questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were employed to analyze data and present results in figures and graphs. Findings show that majority surveyed academia had never been involved in UIG R&D collaborations with any government levels, the clothing, textiles, leather and footwear (CTLF) industry or other clothing related organizations. The paper concludes that the ability of surveyed academia to produce 'relevant' new knowledge may be limited due to under developed UIG R&D collaborations. The likelihood of the surveyed clothing-related programmes producing graduates with 'relevant skills' for a changing world may also be negatively impacted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The South African clothing industry is among the industries viewed as strategic for socio-economic development by the South African government. The government's industrial policies incorporated University-Industry-Government (UIG) Research and Development (R&D) collaborations in efforts to achieve the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and African Union's (AU) Agenda 2063, among others. The literature on UIG R&D collaborations in the context of developing economies and the clothing industry is limited and requires attention to support the achievement of the SDGs and AU Agenda aspirations. This paper presents the status quo of the South African clothing industry using qualitative and quantitative data. The authors interviewed 12 respondents from: the university fashion departments (3), clothing firms (2), clothing consulting firms (2), clothing-related research institutions (2), clothing-related the government divisions (3) and surveyed 22 clothing firms. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were employed to analyze the data. The results show that the government plays a dominant role in these collaborations through policy, grants and incentives because of the lack of R&D activities in the South African clothing industry. The institutional sphere performs R&D activities mainly in isolation while some are pockets of R&D bilateral collaborations performed at arm's length. In light of this, the results indicate that the South African clothing industry is currently at the statist stage. The current triple helix model in play may negatively affect the role that the South African clothing industry can play in achieving the SDGs and AU Agenda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to connect the perceptions and understanding of the collaboration of faculty members of NIRF ranked top-performing engineering institutes with the publication they have. The quantitative bibliometric analysis along with the enquiry with authors show that national collaboration, mainly with academic authors of same or other institution, still is a preferred. Despite international collaboration leading to more average citations, there is no significant gain seen. Scholars collaborate for many reasons, but mostly to gain popularity among peers or to receive citation benefits. Collaboration with private or government organizations, although uncommon, is primarily used to test newly developed ideas or to provide consultancy. Most of the respondents believe that funding is important for research collaborations and low commitment of team members to the shared goal is a major barrier in collaboration. We argue that as the share of University-Industry-Government research collaborations is low, a strong congruence between knowledge capital and entrepreneurial capital is needed to develop an entrepreneurial university. We present work of our COST Action on "Understanding and exploiting the impacts of low pH on micro-organisms". First, we summarise a workshop held at the European Federation of Biotechnology meeting on Microbial Stress Responses (online in 2020) on "Industrial applications of low pH stress on microbial bio-based production", as an example of an initiative fostering links between pure and applied research. We report the outcomes of a small survey on the challenging topic of developing links between researchers working in academia and industry that show that, while people in different sectors strongly support such links, barriers remain that obstruct this process. We present the thoughts of an expert panel held as part of the workshop above, where people with experience of collaboration between academia and industry shared ideas on how to develop and maintain links. Access to relevant information is essential for research in all sectors, and because of this we have developed, as part of our COST Action goals, two resources for the free use of all researchers with interests in any aspects of microbial responses to low pH. These are (1) a comprehensive database of references in the literature on different aspects of acid stress responses in different bacterial and fungal species, and (2) a database of research expertise across our network. This paper aims to analyze the effects of different sources of external knowledge (market sources, institutional sources and business network affiliation) on firms' capacity to innovate. Using cross-sectional data collected with the help of questionnaires on a sample of 514 SMEs in 2014, we employ the maximum likelihood method to estimate logistic regression models from which follow three main results: firstly, market sources significantly reduce innovative capacity; secondly, institutional sources of knowledge significantly increase innovative capacity; and thirdly, the net effect of business network affiliation, taking into account the other two sources of knowledge, is quite small. Thus, these results show that the institutional and operating environment of SMEs needs to be improved in order to discourage opportunistic behaviours and reduce information asymmetries in the hope that, in the long run, market sources can be transformed into an advantage for innovation, on the one hand. On the other hand, there is a need for a broad national coordination policy that encourages collaboration between universities and industry, as well as the commercialization of university research results. The UK Research Centre in Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE), established in 2003, has become a leading industrial-academic collaboration for undertaking industrially relevant research in the fields of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM). The industrial members produced their first five-, ten- and 20-year vision for NDE in 2011 and updated it in 2016. This article describes the newly updated vision for NDE that was produced by the industrial members in 2021/2022. The overall vision presented in this article is a consolidation of the individual industrial sector visions, a process that is possible due to the fact that many longer-term objectives are common across sectors. This enables research projects to be defined that appeal to multiple industries and demonstrates the power of collaboration to deliver relevant solutions. To aid understanding, the responses have been grouped into three themes: improvements desired in the capabilities of NDE technologies; asset-based inspection challenges that need to be met; and aspects that deliver and help to realise the benefits of Industry 4.0. The vision produced by RCNDE’s industrial members will be used to shape the core research programmes and identify opportunities for new collaborations. Purpose: The paucity of empirical evidence on the limitations of the industrial attachment programme of technical universities for enhancing students' human capital in Africa tends to thwart concrete policy options. Design/methodology/approach: The study used the convergent mixed methods including 594 surveys, two focus groups and in-depth interviews to assess and accentuate the research gap in this study. Findings: Evidence of constraints linked to the industrial attachment programme for developing students' human capital needs include limited funding, logistics and incentive for supervision, incompatible placement and exploitation and sexual harassment of students. Insufficient duration and intrusion of the industrial attachment programme due to labour unrests, inadequate collaboration and fears of student interns breaching organisations' confidentiality policies were also found to hinder the programme. Research limitations/implications: The study's dependence on participants' perspectives has the possibility of being characterised by recollection prejudice. The comparatively limited scope and size of the study participants creates concerns of representativeness and generalisability of the study outcome. Practical implications: The outcome of this study could yield significant practical implications for the planning and operations of the industrial attachment programme of tertiary institutions. It also provides information which could serve as the basis for future research and comprehensive evaluation of the programme's planning and implementation. Originality/value: The authors have delineated empirical evidence on the constraints of the industrial attachment programme of Ghanaian technical universities to inform policy decisions on the planning, operations, funding and evaluation of the programme in collaboration with industry and government. Many scholars have studied various sectoral innovation systems that are categorized as mass-produced goods, whereas there are only a few previous studies that have investigated complex product systems (CoPS). CoPS are defined as high-cost, engineering, and software-intensive goods, systems, networks, infrastructure, engineering constructs, and services. However, many differences between these two categories of industries have been reported by a large number of scholars. To address this shortcoming, this paper intends to study the evolution of Iran's gas turbine sectoral innovation system as a CoPS industry. To this end, a qualitative approach and a case study research design were employed. To do this, we conducted 17 in-depth interviews, participated in different conferences and conventions, as well as studied various documents as secondary data. Our findings suggest that: firstly, technological capabilities in Iranian gas turbine producers have evolved from assembling to manufacturing, and re-designing existing gas turbines; Secondly, diverse and dynamic governmental policies associated with the gas turbine industry over the last two decades have played a key role in encouraging domestic firms to acquire technological capabilities; and thirdly, the large and growing domestic market not only justified investing in R&D and building infrastructure by the government but also contributed to improved interaction and collaboration between domestic and overseas' companies. As the main policy implication, our paper suggests that the transition from product-using to product-manufacturing in CoPS industries is not an automatic process. It is important to design the corresponding policies and institutional arrangements following the evolving technological capabilities and demand conditions. Finally, this paper has contributed to sectoral innovation systems and CoPS literature by shedding light on the evolution of the gas turbine industry as CoPS in the context of Iran as a developing country with some restrictions in global technology collaborations. This study examines the influence of firm cluster collaboration and the utilization of big data on the expansion of open innovation. We also investigate the effect of open innovation on business performance and test the moderating effect of social capital. We surveyed 409 global firms (193 large enterprises and 216 medium enterprises) located in Asia, Europe, North America, and Africa over a one-month period. We limited the scope of the survey to employees working at the level of team leader (or executive) or above in the R&D department. This study used SmartPLS (Version 3.3.3) to perform the statistical analysis. Our results indicated that, first, corporate cluster collaboration had a positive effect on the expansion of open innovation. Second, firm use of big data had a positive effect on the expansion of open innovation. Third, firm expansion of open innovation had a positive effect on business performance (market and financial performance). Fourth, in the relationship between cluster collaboration and open innovation expansion, social capital had a negative moderating effect. This research proved that cluster collaboration and big data could accelerate open innovation, ultimately improving business performance. However, there are limitations regarding SEM analysis. The study seeks to explore the influence of university-enterprise collaboration orientation on university's performance. Specifically, the study investigates the effects of alliance scanning, alliance coordination, and alliance learning on university's innovative performance and market performance. The effects were tested on the sample of 191 managers of 37 universities in Vietnam with a survey. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used for testing these effects. The results show that all dimensions of alliance orientation including alliance scanning, alliance coordination, and alliance learning are significantly correlated with innovative performance. For market performance, only alliance coordination and alliance learning are significantly relevant to, but alliance scanning has a non-significant effect. As the pioneering study examing the effect of dimensions of university-enterprise alliance orientation on university's innovative performance and market performance, this study extends the extant literature, particularly the modest research domain of university-enterprise cooperation. The study also added empirical evidence of Vietnamese context – an underexplored Asian developing context for studies of university-industry linkages which is vastly different from other contexts like developed Western economies. This study investigated the relationship between psychological contract breaches and the engagement of academics in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The specific objectives were to investigate the influence of transactional, relational, and balanced psychological contract breaches on the engagement of academics in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study also examined whether the psychological contract breach experience among academics in public universities differs from the experience of academics in private universities. To achieve these objectives, a cross-sectional survey research design was adopted. This was done by using a structured questionnaire to collect data from 348 academics from public and private tertiary institutions in Edo State, Nigeria. The data collected from sampled academics were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study are that transactional, relational, and balanced psychological contract breaches at both group and individual levels have a significant negative influence on the engagement of academics in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Moreover, no significant difference in the level of psychological contract breach between academics in private and public tertiary institutions in Edo State was observed. Considering these findings, the study recommends that the government and management of tertiary institutions should fulfil the transactional and relational obligations or agreements they enter with academics. This can be done by releasing the earn allowance promise to academics, increasing their basic salary, training them in their current job, and providing them research grants. It can also be done by being committed to the long-term emotional well-being of academics, supporting them to develop externally marketable skills, and meeting new and challenging performance requirements that align with industrial standards.
