Abstract: Ultra-intense lasers that ionize atoms and accelerate electrons in solids to near the speed of light can lead to kinetic instabilities that alter the laser absorption and subsequent electron transport, isochoric heating, and ion acceleration. These instabilities can be difficult to characterize, but X-ray scattering at keV photon energies allows for their visualization with femtosecond temporal resolution on the few nanometer mesoscale. Here, we perform such experiment on laser-driven flat silicon membranes that shows the development of structure with a dominant scale of 60 nm in the plane of the laser axis and laser polarization, and 95 nm in the vertical direction with a growth rate faster than 0.1 fs−1 . Combining the XFEL experiments with simulations provides a complete picture of the structural evolution of ultra-fast laser-induced plasma density development, indicating the excita- tion of plasmons and a filamentation instability. Particle-in-cell simulations confirm that these signals are due to an oblique two-stream filamentation instability. These findings provide new insight into ultra-fast instability and heating processes in solids under extreme conditions at the nanometer level with possible implications for laser particle acceleration, inertial confinement fusion, and laboratory astrophysics.

Abstract: Laser-driven ion accelerators can deliver high-energy, high-peak current beams and are thus attracting attention as a compact alternative to conventional accelerators. However, achieving sufficiently high energy levels suitable for applications such as radiation therapy remains a challenge for laser-driven ion accelerators. Here we generate proton beams with a spectrally separated high-energy component of up to 150 MeV by irradiating solid-density plastic foil targets with ultrashort laser pulses from a repetitive petawatt laser. The preceding laser light heats the target, leading to the onset of relativistically induced transparency upon main pulse arrival. The laser peak then penetrates the initially opaque target and triggers proton acceleration through a cascade of different mechanisms, as revealed by three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The transparency of the target can be used to identify the high-performance domain, making it a suitable feedback parameter for automated laser and target optimization to enhance stability of plasma accelerators in the future.

Abstract: In our HELIPORT workshop, we provided insights into our project and share our results. In addition, we would like to provide a platform for the presentation of similar projects, as well as extensions or integrations from the surrounding research areas. The overall goal of the workshop is bringing together different institutions with similar challenges and establishing a community around our HELIPORT project. We therefore encouraged our community to submit an abstract for a talk or poster. The submissions are dedicated to four thematic points: • HELIPORTuse-cases, • Scientificprojectandmetadatamanagement, • Experiment-specificandoverallmetadataand • Scientificworkflows. HELIPORT (Helmholtz ScIentific Project WORkflow PlaTform) itself is a project funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration, and runs from July 2021 until June 2023. HELIPORT aims to make the entire life cycle of a scientific project findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable according to the FAIR principles. In particular, our data management solution deals with the areas from the generation of the data to the publication of primary research data, the workflows carried out and the actual research results. For this purpose, a concept was developed which shows the various essential components and their connections.

These findings provide new insight into the ultra-fast instability processes in solids under extreme conditions at the nanometer level with important implications for inertial confinement fusion and laboratory astrophysics.

Abstract: Ion acceleration by laser-plasma sources promises many applications, but reaching the required beam quality parameters demands a high level of understanding and control over the interaction process. Several advanced schemes, including the Relativistically Induced Transparency (RIT) regime, have been proposed and investigated in search of a stable acceleration for proton energies beyond 100 MeV. In the RIT scheme, the absorption of the electromagnetic laser field by the target and the generated plasma is critical. In joint experiments at the DRACO PW (HZDR) and J-KAREN (KPSI) lasers, we use transmission diagnostics to study the onset of transparency and learn about the sensitivity of the laser input to improve the process’s robustness. Using ultra-short pulses on thin solid density foil targets, we observe high performance proton beams in an expanded foil case. Our analysis of the effects on the transmission and its correlation with the acceleration performance indicates changes in the plasma interaction process.

Abstract: Ion acceleration by laser-plasma sources promises many applications, but reaching the required beam quality parameters demands a high level of understanding and control over the interaction process. Several advanced schemes, including the Relativistically Induced Transparency (RIT) regime, have been proposed and investigated in search of a stable acceleration for proton energies beyond 100 MeV. In the RIT scheme, the absorption of the electromagnetic laser field by the target and the generated plasma is critical. In joint experiments at the DRACO PW (HZDR) and J-KAREN (KPSI) lasers, we use transmission diagnostics to study the onset of transparency and learn about the sensitivity of the laser input to improve the process’s robustness. Using ultra-short pulses on thin solid density foil targets, we observe high performance proton beams in an expanded foil case. Our analysis of the effects on the transmission and its correlation with the acceleration performance indicates changes in the plasma interaction process.

Abstract: Ion acceleration by compact laser-plasma sources has great potential for a range of applications, including those with medical relevance and fusion experiments. However, in order to achieve the necessary beam quality parameters for these applications, a thorough understanding and control over the laser-plasma interaction process is required. Therefore, we are exploring laser plasma acceleration around the promising regime of Relativistically Induced Transparency (RIT) through joint studies at DRACO PW (HZDR) and the J-KAREN-P laser system at KPSI. We have performed thickness scans to investigate the relation between proton acceleration performance and target transparency, revealing high-performance proton beams (> 60 MeV) in an expanded foil case, with an optimum at the onset of target transparency. [1] Subsequent experiments showed even higher proton energies. Clearly, the relationship between the transparency onset time and the acceleration performance is crucial for achieving optimal beam parameters, improving our understanding of the sensitivity of laser input parameters, and increasing the process’s robustness. Thus, we are using a combination of particle and laser diagnostics to investigate this correlation. In this contribution, we present a summary of our studies in which we use spectral interferometry with the unperturbed laser beam as a reference to evaluate the output of reflected and transmitted light diagnostics. Obtaining features like shown in Bagnoud et al. [2] and Williamson et al. [3], we additionally correlate these measures with the proton acceleration performance and show first results of spectral, spatial, and energy analysis of the effects on the laser transmission through the target. Abstract: Publishing raw PIC-simulation results according to the FAIR principle is difficult, primarily size with a single large simulation's raw data reaching 100s TeraByte up to 1-2 PetaByte. Fulfilling the FAIR principles therefore requires a different approach, with only compressed results and simulation setup/initial state made directly available in direct access public data bases. This assures findability of simulations if initial conditions are automatically searchable, makes raw data on slow, high capacity archive storage accessible for specific simulations of interest, or allows rerunning the same simulation if additional data is required. This is currently hindered by the different historically grown input description standards of different PIC-codes. Simulation setups can neither be parsed, searched or understood without implementing a dedicated parser for each code and with more than 4 PIC-simulation codes, (PIConGPU, WARPX, Smilei, PICLS, ...) in use at HZDR alone this is unfeasible. To realise the above a common standardized description for PIC-codes is needed. PICMI is being implemented and developed by HZDR and Berkley Labs for this purpose. Besides fulfilling the above requirements, PICMI will also allow reuse of user interfaces between codes, make the simulations more accessible to users and allow using a common setup for different codes thereby al Bytelowing easy direct comparisons between codes for better reproducibility as well as lay the ground work for automated machine learning on simulations.

Abstract: The Draco laboratory at HZDR is a versatile, multi-arm and multi-target-area facility, consisting of several, independent subsystems. The lack of an overarching DAQ is balanced by interfaces of the subsystems and custom inter-linking agents. We present recent progress of implementing such software agents, connecting to the center’s electronic lab documentation system. First, manual logging of shot parameters and observations is lifted from spreadsheet software to a flexible web-app, writing to a database (DB). The laser-internal logging is exported to a DB and internal software triggering is forwarded to experiments. That provides a connection between laser-internal indexing and experiment-based indexing (another DB) and enables near-online data processing. The latter comprises file path logging and validation according to the shot’s acquisition settings for further analysis as well as basic on-shot analysis scripts, both enabling near-online visualization to better guide the course of experiments. Likewise, parameters and results from simulations are logged to databases, enabling machine learning techniques and better computing resource management. For a long-term, FAIR storage, the HELPMI project starts exploring the possibilities of openPMD and NeXus to ingest experimental data. That project shall serve as initiative for the global LPA community to find a data and metadata standard.

Abstract: Data repositories like Zenodo have a limited list of metadata to search for. Metadata catalogues are designed to provide a community-specific parameters search, but their deployment has just started. These catalogues require metadata standards for interoperability, which in turn are often in development for many communities. To support publications with a metadata standard in the future, a two-step concept is presented in this article. It discusses how the electronic documentation should be constructed, in order to convert this later into a standardised schema for publication. We will present examples from the laser-plasma community for both steps, firstly how we deal with the complex challenges of metadata management and secondly for methods for developing metadata schemas.

The aim is to start the development of a F.A.I.R. data standard for experimental data of the entire laser-plasma (LPA) community. Such standard does not yet exist. It will facilitate management and analysis of usually quite heterogeneous experimental data and logs by rich and machine-actionable metadata, allowing automated processing of broad and long data sets. To date, the LPA community is widely using openPMD, an open meta-standard, well-established for simulations. NeXus is a similarly hierarchical and extensible standard for various experimental methods of the Photon and Neutron science community. Within HELPMI, we plan to adopt NeXus for LPA experimental data and simultaneously to make openPMD and its API extensible for custom hierarchies like NeXus. Thereby we can achieve interoperability of the standards, circumventing the need for another standard. Alongside we will start developing a glossary of LPA experimental terms in order to achieve re-usability. The glossary shall be community-driven and technically open, extensible and implementation-independent.

Abstract: Laser plasma-based proton accelerators (LPA) can contribute to research of ultra-high dose rate radiobiology as they provide pulse dose rates unprecedented at medical proton sources. Yet, LPAs pose challenges regarding precise dosimetry due to the high pulse dose rates, but also due to the sources' lower spectral stability and pulsed operation mode. For in-vivo models, further challenges arise from the necessary small field dosimetry for volumetric dose distributions. In this work, we present a dosimetry and beam monitoring concept for in-vivo irradiations of small target volumes with LPA protons, solving aforementioned challenges. The volumetric dose distribution in a sample (mean dose value and lateral/depth dose inhomogeneity) is provided by combining two independent dose measurements using radiochromic films (dose-rate independent) and ionization chambers (dose-rate dependent), respectively. The unique feature of the dosimetric setup is beam monitoring with a transmission time-of-flight spectrometer to quantify spectral fluctuations of the irradiating proton pulses. The resulting changes in the depth dose profile during irradiation of an in-vivo sample are hence accessible and enable pulse-resolved depth dose correction for each dose measurement. A first successful small animal pilot study using an LPA proton source serves as a testcase for the presented dosimetry approach and proves its performance in a realistic setting.

Abstract: The recently observed FLASH effect provides normal tissue protection at a similar tumor treatment efficacy via ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) irradiation and promises great benefits for radiotherapy patients. Dedicated studies are now necessary to define a robust set of dose application parameters for FLASH radiotherapy and to identify underlying mechanisms. These studies require particle accelerators with variable temporal dose application characteristics for numerous radiation qualities, equipped for preclinical radiobiological research. Here we present the DRESDEN PLATFORM, a research hub for ultra-high dose rate radiobiology. By uniting clinical and research accelerators with radiobiology infrastructure and know-how, the DRESDEN PLATFORM offers a unique environment for studying the FLASH effect. We introduce its experimental capabilities and qualify the platform for systematic investigation of FLASH by presenting results from a concerted in vivo radiobiology study with zebrafish embryos. The comparative pre-clinical study was conducted across three accelerator facilities, including an advanced laser-driven proton source applied for FLASH-relevant in vivo irradiations for the first time. The data show a protective effect of UHDR irradiation up to 10^5 Gy/s and suggests consistency of the protective effect even at escalated dose rates of 10^9 Gy/s. With the first clinical FLASH studies underway, research facilities like the DRESDEN PLATFORM, addressing the open questions surrounding FLASH, are essential to accelerate FLASH’s translation into clinical practice.

Abstract: Polarimetry is a highly sensitive method to quantify changes of the polarization state of light when passing through matter and is therefore widely applied in material science. The progress of synchrotron and X-Ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) sources has led to significant developments of X-ray polarizers, opening perspectives for new applications of polarimetry to study source and beamline parameters as well as sample characteristics. X-ray polarimetry has shown to date a polarization purity of \num{<1.4e-11}, enabling detection of very small signals from ultrafast phenomena. A prominent application is the detection of vacuum birefringence. Vacuum birefringence is predicted in Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and expected to be probed by combining an XFEL with a petawatt-class optical laser. We review how source and optical elements affect X-ray polarimeters in general and what qualities are required for detection of vacuum birefringence.

Abstract: Laser plasma-based particle accelerators attract great interest in fields where conventional accelerators reach limits based on size, cost or beam parameters. Despite the fact that particle in cell simulations have predicted several advantageous ion acceleration schemes, laser accelerators have not yet reached their full potential in producing simultaneous high-radiation doses at high particle energies. The most stringent limitation is the lack of a suitable high-repetition rate target that also provides a high degree of control of the plasma conditions required to access these advanced regimes. Here, we demonstrate that the interaction of petawatt-class laser pulses with a pre-formed micrometer-sized cryogenic hydrogen jet plasma overcomes these limitations enabling tailored density scans from the solid to the underdense regime. Our proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates that the near-critical plasma density profile produces proton energies of up to 80 MeV. Based on hydrodynamic and three-dimensional particle in cell simulations, transition between different acceleration schemes are shown, suggesting enhanced proton acceleration at the relativistic transparency front for the optimal case.

Abstract: The next generation of high-power lasers enables repetition of experiments at orders of magnitude higher frequency than was possible using the prior generation. Facilities requiring human intervention between laser repetitions need to adapt in order to keep pace with the new laser technology. A distributed networked control system can enable laboratory-wide automation and feedback control loops. These higher-repetition-rate experiments will create enormous quantities of data. A consistent approach to managing data can increase data accessibility, reduce repetitive data-software development, and mitigate poorly organized metadata. An opportunity arises to share knowledge of improvements to control and data infrastructure currently being undertaken. We compare platforms and approaches to state-of-the-art control systems and data management at high-power laser facilities, and we illustrate these topics with case studies from our community.

Abstract: For high-intensity laser-solid interactions, the absolute density and surface density gradients of the target at the arrival of the ultra-relativistic laser peak are critical parameters. Accurate modeling of the leading edge-driven target pre-expansion is desired to strengthen the predictive power of associated computer simulations. The transition from an initial solid state to a plasma state, i.e., the breakdown of the solid, defines the starting point of the subsequent target pre-expansion. In this work, we report on the time-resolved observation of transient laser-induced breakdown (LIB) during the leading edge of high-intensity petawatt-class laser pulses with peak intensities of up to 5.7 × 10^21 W/cm^2 in interaction with dielectric cryogenic hydrogen jet targets. LIB occurs much earlier than what is typically expected following the concept of barrier suppression ionization. The observation is explained by comparing a characterization study of target specific LIB thresholds with laser contrast measurements. The results demonstrate the relevance of the laser pulse duration dependence of LIB for high-intensity laser-solid interactions. We provide an effective approach to determine the onset of LIB and thereby the starting point of target pre-expansion in other laser-target systems.

Abstract: Publishing raw PIC-simulation results according to the FAIR principle is difficult, primarily size with a single large simulation's raw data reaching 100s TeraByte up to 1-2 PetaByte. Fulfilling the FAIR principles therefore requires a different approach, with only compressed results and simulation setup/initial state made directly available in direct access public data bases. This assures findability of simulations if initial conditions are automatically searchable, makes raw data on slow, high capacity archive storage accessible for specific simulations of interest, or allows rerunning the same simulation if additional data is required. This is currently hindered by the different historically grown input description standards of different PIC-codes. Simulation setups can neither be parsed, searched or understood without implementing a dedicated parser for each code and with more than 4 PIC-simulation codes, (PIConGPU, WARPX, Smilei, PICLS, ...) in use at HZDR alone this is unfeasible. To realise the above a common standardized description for PIC-codes is needed. PICMI is being implemented and developed by HZDR and Berkley Labs for this purpose. Besides fulfilling the above requirements, PICMI will also allow reuse of user interfaces between codes, make the simulations more accessible to users and allow using a common setup for different codes thereby al Bytelowing easy direct comparisons between codes for better reproducibility as well as lay the ground work for automated machine learning on simulations.

Abstract: Ion acceleration by compact laser-plasma sources has great potential for a range of applications, including those with medical relevance and fusion experiments. However, in order to achieve the necessary beam quality parameters for these applications, a thorough understanding and control over the laser-plasma interaction process is required. Therefore, we are exploring laser plasma acceleration around the promising regime of Relativistically Induced Transparency (RIT) through joint studies at DRACO PW (HZDR) and the J-KAREN-P laser system at KPSI. We have performed thickness scans to investigate the relation between proton acceleration performance and target transparency, revealing high-performance proton beams (> 60 MeV) in an expanded foil case, with an optimum at the onset of target transparency. [1] Subsequent experiments showed even higher proton energies. Clearly, the relationship between the transparency onset time and the acceleration performance is crucial for achieving optimal beam parameters, improving our understanding of the sensitivity of laser input parameters, and increasing the process’s robustness. Thus, we are using a combination of particle and laser diagnostics to investigate this correlation. In this contribution, we present a summary of our studies in which we use spectral interferometry with the unperturbed laser beam as a reference to evaluate the output of reflected and transmitted light diagnostics. Obtaining features like shown in Bagnoud et al. [2] and Williamson et al. [3], we additionally correlate these measures with the proton acceleration performance and show first results of spectral, spatial, and energy analysis of the effects on the laser transmission through the target. Abstract: In our HELIPORT workshop, we provided insights into our project and share our results. In addition, we would like to provide a platform for the presentation of similar projects, as well as extensions or integrations from the surrounding research areas. The overall goal of the workshop is bringing together different institutions with similar challenges and establishing a community around our HELIPORT project. We therefore encouraged our community to submit an abstract for a talk or poster. The submissions are dedicated to four thematic points: • HELIPORTuse-cases, • Scientificprojectandmetadatamanagement, • Experiment-specificandoverallmetadataand • Scientificworkflows. HELIPORT (Helmholtz ScIentific Project WORkflow PlaTform) itself is a project funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration, and runs from July 2021 until June 2023. HELIPORT aims to make the entire life cycle of a scientific project findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable according to the FAIR principles. In particular, our data management solution deals with the areas from the generation of the data to the publication of primary research data, the workflows carried out and the actual research results. For this purpose, a concept was developed which shows the various essential components and their connections.

Abstract: Laser-driven ion sources are a rapidly developing technology producing high energy, high peak current beams. Their suitability for applications, such as compact medical accelerators, motivates development of robust acceleration schemes using widely available repetitive ultraintense femtosecond lasers. These applications not only require high beam energy, but also place demanding requirements on the source stability and controllability. This can be seriously affected by the laser temporal contrast, precluding the replication of ion acceleration performance on independent laser systems with otherwise similar parameters. Here, we present the experimental generation of >60 MeV protons and >30 MeV u^{−1} carbon ions from sub-micrometre thickness Formvar foils irradiated with laser intensities >10^{21} W/cm^{2}. Ions are accelerated by an extreme localised space charge field ≳30 TVm^{−1}, over a million times higher than used in conventional accelerators. The field is formed by a rapid expulsion of electrons from the target bulk due to relativistically induced transparency, in which relativistic corrections to the refractive index enables laser transmission through normally opaque plasma. We replicate the mechanism on two different laser facilities and show that the optimum target thickness decreases with improved laser contrast due to reduced pre-expansion. Our demonstration that energetic ions can be accelerated by this mechanism at different contrast levels relaxes laser requirements and indicates interaction parameters for realising application-specific beam delivery.

Abstract: Ultra-intense lasers that ionize and accelerate electrons in solids to near the speed of light can lead to kinetic instabilities that alter the laser absorption and subsequent electron transport, isochoric heating, and ion acceleration. These instabilities can be difficult to characterize, but a novel approach using X-ray scattering at keV energies allows for their visualization with femtosecond temporal resolution on the few nanometer mesoscale. Our experiments on laser-driven flat silicon membranes show the development of structure with a dominant scale of $~60\unit{nm}$ in the plane of the laser axis and laser polarization, and $~95\unit{nm}$ in the vertical direction with a growth rate faster than $0.1/\mathrm{fs}$. Combining the XFEL experiments with simulations provides a complete picture of the structural evolution of ultra-fast laser-induced instability development, indicating the excitation of surface plasmons and the growth of a new type of filamentation instability. These findings provide new insight into the ultra-fast instability processes in solids under extreme conditions at the nanometer level with important implications for inertial confinement fusion and laboratory astrophysics.

Abstract: Laser-driven ion accelerators can deliver high-energy, high peak current beams and are thus attracting attention as a compact alternative to conventional accelerators. However, achieving sufficiently high energy levels suitable for applications such as radiation therapy remains a challenge for laser-driven ion accelerators. Here, we generate proton beams with a spectrally separated high-energy component of up to 150MeV by irradiating solid-density plastic foil targets with ultrashort laser pulses from a repetitive petawatt laser. The preceding laser light heats the target, leading to the onset of relativistically-induced transparency upon main pulse arrival. The laser peak then penetrates the initially opaque target and triggers proton acceleration through a cascade of different mechanisms, as revealed by three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The transparency of the target can be used to identify the high-performance domain, making it a suitable feedback parameter for automated laser and target optimisation to enhance stability of plasma accelerators in the future.

Abstract: Exploiting the strong electromagnetic fields that can be supported by a plasma, high-power laser driven compact plasma accelerators enable generation of short, high-intensity pulses of high energy ions with special beam properties. These accelerators promise to expand the portfolio of conventional machines in many application areas. The maturation of laser driven ion accelerators from physics experiments to turn-key sources for these applications will rely on breakthroughs in both, generated beam parameters (kinetic energy, flux), as well as increased scrutiny on reproducibility, robustness and scalability to high repetition rate. Recent developments at the high-power laser facility DRACO-PW enabled the production of polychromatic proton beams with unprecedented stability [1]. This allowed the first in vivo radiobiological study to be conducted using a laser-driven proton source [2]. Yet, the ability to achieve energies beyond the 100 MeV frontier is essential for many applications and a matter of ongoing research, mainly addressed by exploring advanced acceleration schemes like the relativistically induced transparency regime. In this talk we report on experimental proton acceleration studies at the onset of relativistic transparency using linearly polarized laser pulses with peak intensities of 6x21 W/cm2 focused on thin, pre-expanded plastic foils. Combined hydrodynamic and 3D particle-in-cell simulations helped to identify the most promising target parameter range matched to the carefully measured prevailing laser contrast conditions. In a nutshell, the ultra-intense femtosecond pulse interaction induces large accelerating gradients and energy gain dominantly arising from significant space charge fields due to electron expulsion from the relativistic transparent target core followed by weaker post-acceleration in diffuse sheath fields at later times. Abstract: Ion acceleration by compact laser-plasma sources promises a variety of applications ranging from medical relevance to fusion experiments.Reaching the required beam quality parameters for those applications demands a very high level of understanding and control over the laserplasma interaction process. Central components in this context are the absorption of the electromagnetic laser field by the plasma and the quality of the resulting acceleration field structure. Measuring and analyzing unabsorbed light - as transmitted and/or specularly reflected parts - thus allows insight into properties of the underlying laser-plasma interaction. We experimentally investigate these interactions for high and low-contrast laser pulses with thin solid density foil targets at the Draco PW laser system (HZDR). The results of spectral, spatial, and energy analysis of transmitted and reflected light indicate changes in the plasma interaction and will be presented.

Abstract: In this presentation we provide an overview of the commissioning and first user experiment of ReLaX in combination with the XFEL beam. We will introduce the setup and laser parameters. We will show the established standard setup combining small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), phase-contrast imaging (PCI) and spectroscopy techniques. Finally we will show examples of the data obtained in the interaction of the ReLaX laser with targets of interested for the short-pulse laser community.

Abstract: Recent oncological studies identified beneficial properties of radiation applied at ultra-high dose rates several orders of magnitude higher than the clinical standard of the order of Gy/min. Sources capable of providing these ultra-high dose rates are under investigation. Here, we show that a stable, compact laser-driven proton source with energies greater than 60 MeV enables radiobiological in vivo studies. We performed a pilot irradiation study on human tumors in a mouse model, showing the concerted preparation of mice and laser accelerator, the dose-controlled, tumor-conform irradiation using a laser-driven as well as a clinical reference proton source, and the radiobiological evaluation of irradiated and unirradiated mice for radiation-induced tumor growth delay. The prescribed homogeneous dose of 4 Gy was precisely delivered at the laser-driven source. The results demonstrate a complete laser-driven proton research platform for diverse user-specific small animal models, able to deliver tunable single-shot doses up to around 20 Gy to millimeter-scale volumes on nanosecond time scales, equivalent to around 1E9 Gy/s, spatially homogenized and tailored to the sample. The platform provides a unique infrastructure for translational research with protons at ultra-high dose rate.

Abstract: Laser-plasma based proton accelerators as a novel accelerator technology have matured to a level at which laboratory-scale setups for the emerging topic of image-guided precision small animal irradiation studies come into reach [Bra2019]. Providing a high proton energy bandwidth [Sch2016] which is filtered in a tunable pulsed magnet beam transport, these accelerators enable flexibility in terms of scattering-free irradiation field formation [Mas2014, Mas2015]. Regarding temporal dose delivery, with single pulse doses reaching the Gy level at unprecedented peak dose rates of up to 1012 Gy/s [Sch2016], laser-plasma based proton accelerator setups can give access to the dose rate regime of FLASH [Fav2014, Voz2019]. The realization of a full-scale setup for image-guided precision radiobiological studies for small animals focusing on dose rate dependent effects is currently prepared at the PENELOPE laser-plasma based proton accelerator at HZDR and will be presented with a focus on the technological requirements and solutions for dose delivery at laser-plasma based sources. This development relies on our experience in performing dose-controlled radiobiological in vitro studies [Kra2010, Zei2013] and first in vivo irradiation experiments at the DRACO laser-plasma based proton accelerator at HZDR, where we have established a pulsed solenoid beamline for 3D irradiation field formation, yielding a (5 mm)³ homogeneous volumetric dose distribution at a Gy single pulse dose level [8]. Abstract: Laser-driven plasma accelerators (LPA) are compact sources of ultra-short, intense proton pulses in the multi-10-MeV energy range. These unique parameters predestine LPAs as powerful tools for ultra-high dose rate radiobiology research. The sources’ capabilities were recently demonstrated in the first successful small animal pilot study on radiation-induced tumor growth delay in mice using an LPA proton source [1]. To promote further sophisticated radiobiological studies at LPAs, adapted approaches for primary LPA source characterization, beam monitoring and dosimeters are required. Here, most prominent challenges are LPA-inherent pulse-to-pulse fluctuation in terms of intensity as well as proton energy distribution, the ultra-high pulse dose rate and the harsh plasma environment, featuring a strong electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and an intense mixed radiation background. These conditions call for robust online monitoring solutions. We present the solutions for source-to-sample characterization implemented at the ALBUS-2S beamline [2] at the Draco Petawatt laser system [3] at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. These include firstly an online beam monitoring system based on a time-of-flight spectrometer (ToF BMS). A core feature of the ToF BMS method is a precise spectrum-based forward-calculation of the corresponding volumetric dose distribution via Monte-Carlo simulation. Secondly, a dosimetric system for volumetric mm-scale sample irradiations was conceptualized and tested during an in vivo irradiation study, showing a solution for precise dosimetric characterization of ultra-high dose rate pulses at the ~500 mGy pulse dose range. Lastly, with the OCTOPOD and MiniSCIDOM, two devices for online, single pulse characterization of volumetric dose distributions are presented, applicable for the primary LPA source and mm-scale dose distributions at the sample site, respectively. Abstract: Laser plasma based particle accelerators have attracted great interest in fields where conventional accelerators reach limits based on size, cost or beam parameters. Designing future laser ion accelerators requires a high degree of control of the advanced acceleration schemes involved and predictive modelling capabilities. Here, we investigate the interaction of petawatt class laser pulses with a micrometer sized cryogenic hydrogen jet target. Controlled pre-expansion of the target by low intensity pre-pulses allowed for tailored density scans over more than two orders of magnitude. On-shot target characterization using two-color optical probing provided precise starting conditions for numerical simulations. For the optimal target density profile in the near critical regime proton energies of up to 80 MeV were observed which represents a two-fold increase with respect to the initial solid target case. Three-dimensional particle in cell simulations confirmed the transition between different acceleration mechanisms involved and suggested the magnetic-vortex regime to be responsible for the highest proton energies achieved.

Abstract: Exploiting the strong electromagnetic fields that can be supported by a plasma, high-power laser driven compact plasma accelerators can generate short, high-intensity pulses of high energy ions with special beam properties interesting for many application areas. The transition of laser driven ion accelerators from physics experiments to turn-key sources for these applications relies on improvement of generated beam parameters (kinetic energy, flux), as well as increased reproducibility, robustness and scalability to high repetition rate. Recent developments at the high-power laser facility DRACO-PW enabled the production of polychromatic proton beams with unprecedented stability [1] which enabled the first in vivo radiobiological study to be conducted using a laser-driven proton source [2]. Yet, the ability to achieve highest energies around or even beyond the 100 MeV frontier is matter of ongoing research, mainly addressed by exploring advanced acceleration schemes. In parallel to the testing of these schemes an important challenge is to provide convincing evidence that these very high energies could be reached at all for a significant number of particles. Occurring complications are due to the nature of the multi-species beams with typically exponentially decaying spectra and low shot statistics of laser-plasma experiments at the necessary laser pulse energy levels. The latter is in particular complicated for highly non-linear acceleration regimes with intrinsically low reproducibility. In this talk we summarize our approaches for the spatial and spectral characterization of our proton beam parameters with cut-off energies larger than 80 MeV. Key is the combination of a multitude of different methods based on different detection principles established for single shot measurements. Abstract: We report on the design and characterization of the plasma mirror system installed on the J-KAREN-P laser at the Kansai Photon Science Institute, National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology. The reflectivity of the single plasma mirror system exceeded 80%. In addition, the temporal contrast was improved by two orders of magnitude at 1 ps before the main pulse. Furthermore, the laser near-field spatial distribution after the plasma mirror was kept constant at plasma mirror fluence of less than 100 kJ/cm2. We also present the results of investigating the difference and the fluctuation in energy, pulse width and pointing stability with and without the plasma mirror system.

Abstract: Due to the non-linear nature of relativistic laser induced plasma processes, the development of laser-plasma accelerators requires precise numerical modeling. Especially high intensity laser-solid interactions are sensitive to the temporal laser rising edge and the predictive capability of simulations suffers from incomplete information on the plasma state at the onset of the relativistic interaction. Experimental diagnostics utilizing ultra-fast optical backlighters can help to ease this challenge by providing temporally resolved inside into the plasma density evolution. We present the successful implementation of an off-harmonic optical probe laser setup to investigate the interaction of a high-intensity laser at 5.4E21 W / cm^2 peak intensity with a solid-density cylindrical cryogenic hydrogen jet target of 5 um diameter as a target test bed. The temporal synchronization of pump and probe laser, spectral filtering and spectrally resolved data of the parasitic plasma self-emission are discussed. The probing technique mitigates detector saturation by self-emission and allowed to record a temporal scan of shadowgraphy data revealing details of the target ionization and expansion dynamics that were so far not accessible for the given laser intensity. Plasma expansion speeds of up to (2.3+-0.4)E7 m / s followed by full target transparency at 1.4 ps after the high intensity laser peak are observed. A three dimensional particle-in-cell simulation initiated with the diagnosed target pre-expansion at -0.2 ps and post processed by ray tracing simulations supports the experimental observations and demonstrates the capability of time resolved optical diagnostics to provide quantitative input and feedback to the numerical treatment within the time frame of the relativistic laser-plasma interaction.

Abstract: Recent oncological studies identified beneficial properties of radiation applied at ultra-high dose rates several orders of magnitude higher than the clinical standard of the order of Gy/min. Sources capable of providing these ultra-high dose rates are under investigation. Here, we show that a stable, compact laser-driven proton source with energies greater than 60 MeV enables radiobiological in vivo studies. We performed a pilot irradiation study on human tumors in a mouse model, showing the concerted preparation of mice and laser accelerator, the dose-controlled, tumor-conform irradiation using a laser-driven as well as a clinical reference proton source, and the radiobiological evaluation of irradiated and unirradiated mice for radiation-induced tumor growth delay. The prescribed homogeneous dose of 4 Gy was precisely delivered at the laser-driven source. The results demonstrate a complete laser-driven proton research platform for diverse user-specific small animal models, able to deliver tunable single-shot doses up to around 20 Gy to millimeter-scale volumes on nanosecond time scales, equivalent to around 1E9 Gy/s, spatially homogenized and tailored to the sample. The platform provides a unique infrastructure for translational research with protons at ultra-high dose rate.

Abstract: In recent years, high-precision x-ray polarimeters have become a key method for the investigation of fundamental physical questions from solid-state physics to quantum optics. Here, we report on the verification of a polarization purity of better than 8×10−11 at an x-ray free-electron laser, which implies a suppression of the incoming photons to the noise level in the crossed polarizer setting. This purity provides exceptional sensitivity to tiny polarization changes and offers intriguing perspectives for fundamental tests of quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract: The High Energy Density (HED) instrument at the European XFEL provides a platform to study hot and warm dense matter. The Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HiBEF) is a User Consortium supplying HED with two laser systems (the high-intensity ReLaX laser, by Amplitude Technologies, and the high-energy Dipole-100X laser, by STFC), Diamond Anvil Cells setup and high-pulsed magnetic fields. These tools in combination with the XFEL beam enable the investigation of relativistic laser plasmas, strong-field QED phenomena, high-pressure astro- and planetary physics as well as magnetic phenomena in condensed matter. The successful commissioning of the ultra-short pulse high-intensity ReLaX laser, provides new unique opportunities in the plasma and high-field physics fields [1]. ReLaX is a double CPA Ti:Sa laser capable of delivering up to 300 TW pulses on target. In the first commissioning phase, 100 TW pulses were used, reaching intensities up to 1020 W/cm2. Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) without the need of a beamstop was first commissioned at HED in September 2019. Two highly annealed pyrolytic graphite (HAPG) crystals were used to reflect the SAXS photons onto a detector while allowing the main XFEL beam to go through [2]. In April and May 2021, Small Angle X-Ray Scattering and Phase Contrast Imaging (PCI) were simultaneously demonstrated in pump-probe experiments at HED in a community experiment involving 15 institutions from all over the world. In this talk we will present the preliminary results of this community experiment probing ultrafast phenomena in a wide array of target configurations: hole boring in wires, shockwave generation in CH blocks, buried heating of a wire inside a CH medium, foam ionization and collective effects in heated foils. Abstract: Exploiting the strong electromagnetic fields that can be supported by a laser driven compact plasma accelerator enables generation of short, high-intensity pulses of high energy ions with special beam properties. The maturation of such laser driven ion accelerators from physics experiments to turn-key sources for applications will rely on breakthroughs in both, generated beam parameters (kinetic energy, flux), as well as increased scrutiny on reproducibility, robustness, and scalability to high repetition rate. Recent developments at the high-power laser facility DRACO-PW enabled the production of polychromatic proton beams with unprecedented stability [1]. This facilitated the first in vivo radiobiological study using a laser-driven proton source [2]. For many related advanced applications, the ability to generate proton beams with energies beyond the 100 MeV frontier at a repetition rate and in a controllable way is essential and the subject of ongoing research. Latest experimental studies concentrated on pre-expanded plastic foil target undergoing relativistically induced transparency using linearly polarized laser pulses with peak intensities beyond 1021 W/cm2. A complex suite of particle and optical diagnostics allowed characterization of spatial and spectral proton beam parameters and the stability of this regime for best acceleration performance exceeding 100 MeV cut-off energies. Combined hydrodynamic and 3D particle-in-cell simulations helped to identify the most promising target parameter range matched to the carefully measured prevailing laser contrast conditions.

Abstract: The Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields is a user consortium providing drivers for high-energy density and high-field science at the HED station of EuXFEL. This presentation will give an overview of the current implementation and commissioning results as well as future plans and exemplary science cases. In parallel, new exciting opportunities for high-field science are opening with the first user call at the ELI facilities. Here, we will discuss first results on Megatesla magnetic field generation in overdense plasmas. We will also discuss future plans to exploit the high intensities, up to 10 PW, to be delivered at ELI-NP.

Abstract: In this presentation we provide an overview of the commissioning and first user experiment of ReLaX in combination with the XFEL beam. We will introduce the setup and laser parameters. We will show the established standard setup combining small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), phase-contrast imaging (PCI) and spectroscopy techniques. Finally we will show examples of the data obtained in the interaction of the ReLaX laser with targets of interested for the short-pulse laser community.

49. Laser-plasma based proton accelerators for small animal pre-clinical radiation research

Abstract: Laser-plasma based proton accelerators as a novel accelerator technology have matured to a level at which laboratory-scale setups for the emerging topic of image-guided precision small animal irradiation studies come into reach [Bra2019]. Providing a high proton energy bandwidth [Sch2016] which is filtered in a tunable pulsed magnet beam transport, these accelerators enable flexibility in terms of scattering-free irradiation field formation [Mas2014, Mas2015]. Regarding temporal dose delivery, with single pulse doses reaching the Gy level at unprecedented peak dose rates of up to 1012 Gy/s [Sch2016], laser-plasma based proton accelerator setups can give access to the dose rate regime of FLASH [Fav2014, Voz2019]. The realization of a full-scale setup for image-guided precision radiobiological studies for small animals focusing on dose rate dependent effects is currently prepared at the PENELOPE laser-plasma based proton accelerator at HZDR and will be presented with a focus on the technological requirements and solutions for dose delivery at laser-plasma based sources. This development relies on our experience in performing dose-controlled radiobiological in vitro studies [Kra2010, Zei2013] and first in vivo irradiation experiments at the DRACO laser-plasma based proton accelerator at HZDR, where we have established a pulsed solenoid beamline for 3D irradiation field formation, yielding a (5 mm)³ homogeneous volumetric dose distribution at a Gy single pulse dose level [8]. Abstract: Exploiting the strong electromagnetic fields that can be supported by a plasma, high-power laser driven compact plasma accelerators can generate short, high-intensity pulses of high energy ions with special beam properties interesting for many application areas. The transition of laser driven ion accelerators from physics experiments to turn-key sources for these applications relies on improvement of generated beam parameters (kinetic energy, flux), as well as increased reproducibility, robustness and scalability to high repetition rate. Recent developments at the high-power laser facility DRACO-PW enabled the production of polychromatic proton beams with unprecedented stability [1] which enabled the first in vivo radiobiological study to be conducted using a laser-driven proton source [2]. Yet, the ability to achieve highest energies around or even beyond the 100 MeV frontier is matter of ongoing research, mainly addressed by exploring advanced acceleration schemes. In parallel to the testing of these schemes an important challenge is to provide convincing evidence that these very high energies could be reached at all for a significant number of particles. Occurring complications are due to the nature of the multi-species beams with typically exponentially decaying spectra and low shot statistics of laser-plasma experiments at the necessary laser pulse energy levels. The latter is in particular complicated for highly non-linear acceleration regimes with intrinsically low reproducibility. In this talk we summarize our approaches for the spatial and spectral characterization of our proton beam parameters with cut-off energies larger than 80 MeV. Key is the combination of a multitude of different methods based on different detection principles established for single shot measurements.
