In order to find predictors of patient cooperation 40 dentists were asked, in personal interviews, to relate two cases each, one “successful” and one “unsuccessful”, outcome being mainly due to patient's response to motivation efforts. The variables which differentiated must clearly between “successful” and “unsuccessful” cases were, in decreasing order, patient's involvement, patient's psychological state, dentist's involvement, patient's physical state, patient's social relations and patient's general hygiene.
