A superconducting coupling solenoid mounted around four conventional RF cavities, which produces up to 2.6 T central magnetic field to keep the muons within the cavities, is to be used for the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE). The coupling coil made from copper matrix NbTi conductors is the largest of three types of magnets in MICE both in terms of 1.5 m inner diameter and about 13 MJ stored magnetic energy at full operation current of 210 A. The stress induced inside the coil assembly during cool down and magnet charging is relatively high. In order to validate the design method and develop the coil winding technique with inside-wound SC splices required for the coupling coil, a prototype coil made from the same conductor and with the same diameter and thickness but only one-fourth long as the coupling coil was designed and fabricated by ICST. The prototype coil was designed to be charged to strain conditions that are equivalent or greater than would be encountered in the coupling coil. This paper presents detailed design of the prototype coil as well as developed coil winding skills. The analyses on stress in the coil assembly and quench process were carried out. The MuCool program undertaken by the US Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration is to study the behavior of muon ionization cooling channel components. A single superconducting coupling solenoid magnet is necessary to pursue the research and development work on the performance of high gradient, large size RF cavities immersed in magnetic field, which is one of the main challenges in the practical realization of ionization cooling of muons. The MuCool coupling magnet is to be built using commercial copper based niobium titanium conductors and cooled by two cryo-coolers with each cooling capacity of 1.5 W at 4.2 K. The solenoid magnet will be powered by using a single 300 A power supply through a single pair of binary leads that are designed to carry a maximum current of 210 A. The magnet is to be passively protected by cold diodes and resistors across sections of the coil and by quench back from the 6061 Al mandrel in order to lower the quench voltage and the hot spot temperature. The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a detailed study of ionization cooling to evaluate the feasibility of the technique. To carry out this program, MICE requires an efficient particle-identification (PID) system to identify muons. The Electron-Muon Ranger (EMR) is a fully-active tracking-calorimeter that forms part of the PID system and tags muons that traverse the cooling channel without decaying. The detector is capable of identifying electrons with an efficiency of 98.6%, providing a purity for the MICE beam that exceeds 99.8%. The EMR also proved to be a powerful tool for the reconstruction of muon momenta in the range 100-280 MeV/$c$., 22 pages, 19 figures

We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of Upsilon(4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 million B-anti-B pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2beta = 0.59 +/- 0.14 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst) establishes CP violation in the B^0 meson system. We also determine |lambda| = 0.93 +/- 0.09 {stat} +/- 0.03 {syst}, consistent with no direct CP violation., 8 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE), which is under construction at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), will demonstrate the principle of ionization cooling as a technique for the reduction of the phase-space volume occupied by a muon beam. Ionization cooling channels are required for the Neutrino Factory and the Muon Collider. MICE will evaluate in detail the performance of a single lattice cell of the Feasibility Study 2 cooling channel. The MICE Muon Beam has been constructed at the ISIS synchrotron at RAL, and in MICE Step I, it has been characterized using the MICE beam-instrumentation system. In this paper, the MICE Muon Beam and beam-line instrumentation are described. The muon rate is presented as a function of the beam loss generated by the MICE target dipping into the ISIS proton beam. For a 1 V signal from the ISIS beam-loss monitors downstream of our target we obtain a 30 KHz muon rate, with a neglible pion contamination in the beam. The conclusions of the Physics Working Group of the international scoping study of a future Neutrino Factory and super-beam facility (the ISS) are presented. The ISS was carried by the international community between NuFact05, (the 7th International Workshop on Neutrino Factories and Superbeams, Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, Rome, June 21-26, 2005) and NuFact06 (Ivine, California, 24{30 August 2006). The physics case for an extensive experimental programme to understand the properties of the neutrino is presented and the role of high-precision measurements of neutrino oscillations within this programme is discussed in detail. The performance of second generation super-beam experiments, beta-beam facilities, and the Neutrino Factory are evaluated and a quantitative comparison of the discovery potential of the three classes of facility is presented. High-precision studies of the properties of the muon are complementary to the study of neutrino oscillations. The Neutrino Factory has the potential to provide extremely intense muon beams and the physics potential of such beams is discussed in the final section of the report., 370 pages, 121 postscript figures

- Abstract
The branching fractions of the exclusive decays B0-->K(*0)gamma and B+-->K(*+)gamma are measured from a sample of (22.74+/-0.36)x10(6) BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find B (B0-->K(*0)gamma) = [4.23+/-0.40(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5), B(B+-->K(*+)gamma) = [3.83+/-0.62(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5) and constrain the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be -0.170K(*)gamma)

- Abstract
The branching fractions of the exclusive decays B-0 --> K*(0)gamma and B+ --> K*(+)gamma are measured. from a sample of (22.74 +/- 0.36) x 10(6) B (B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find B(B-0 --> K*(0)gamma) = [4.23 +/- 0.40(stat) +/- 0.22(syst)] x 10(-5), B(B+ --> K*(+)gamma) = [3.83 +/- 0.62(stat) 0.22(syst)] X 10-5 and constrain the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be -0.170 < A(CP)(B --> K*gamma) < 0.082 at 90% C.L.

We find B(B0→K*0γ) = [4.23±0.40(stat)±0.22(syst)]×10-5, B(B+→K*+γ) = [3.83±0.62(stat)±0.22(syst)]×10-5 and constrain the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be -0.170

- Abstract
Purpose: To analyze the ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) features of eyes with chronic hypotony after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and compare them with the UBM features of eyes with normal intraocular pressure (IOP) after PPV., Methods: This comparative (nonrandomized) interventional study included 64 eyes of 64 patients who underwent PPV. Group 1 included 20 eyes with less complex vitreoretinal diseases (VRD) that presented with normal IOP after PPV. Group 2 included 44 eyes with severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) managed with PPV and silicone oil tamponade that presented with complete retina reattachment and chronic ocular hypotony. UBM was performed to study the anterior segment, ciliary body (CB), and peripheral retina. The UBM findings of the two groups were compared., Results: In Group 1, 19/20 eyes presented with no CB alterations detected by UBM. In Group 2, 43/44 eyes presented with CB alterations that included tractional CB detachment (n=16); exudative CB detachment (n=11); tractional CB detachment/CB atrophy (n=7); CB hypotrophy (n=5); tractional CB detachment/exudative CB detachment (n=3); and CB edema (n=1). There was a strong relationship between IOP and CB findings revealed by UBM., Conclusions: Eyes with hypotony following PPV have CB abnormalities that can be detected by UBM. These CB alterations were not found in eyes with normal IOP after PPV in this series.

- Abstract
Purpose: To determine if pars plana vitrectomy induces long-term changes in the anterior segment anatomy by means of ultrasound biomicroscopy., Methods: A prospective case series study was undertaken of consecutive patients referred to a tertiary eye care centre for pars plana vitrectomy as the only procedure. Twenty eyes of 20 patients undergoing pars plana vitrectomy alone were studied by ultrasound biomicroscopy. Silicone oil or scleral buckle was not used in any of the included cases. The following morphometric parameters were compared before and after 3 months of surgery: anterior chamber depth, angle-opening distance at 500 microm from the scleral spur, trabecular-ciliary process distance, ciliary body thickness at 1, 2 and 3 millimeters from the scleral spur and measurement of the supraciliary space thickness, when fluid was detected., Results: No statistically significant differences were found between the preoperative and the postoperative morphometric parameters., Conclusion: Uncomplicated pars plana vitrectomy does not induce any long-term change on anterior segment morphometry. Based on these findings, the normal long-term pattern to be expected after pars plana vitrectomy is the conservation of the preoperative morphometry.

- Abstract
We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of Upsilon(4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 x 10(6) BB macro pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2 beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2 beta = 0.59+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.05(syst) establishes CP violation in the B(0) meson system. We also determine absolute value of lambda = 0.93+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.03(syst), consistent with no direct CP violation.

- Abstract
We examined 15 eyes of ten patients with complications of hexagonal keratotomy, which included glare, photophobia, polyopia, fluctuation in vision, overcorrection, irregular astigmatism, corneal edema, corneal perforation, bacterial keratitis, cataract, and endophthalmitis. Wound healing abnormalities and anterior displacement of the central cornea adjacent to the incisions were common. Eight eyes lost best-corrected visual acuity of two or more Snellen lines. Three eyes required penetrating keratoplasty for visual rehabilitation. Histologic analysis of two of these corneas disclosed variations in wound depth and abnormalities of wound configuration, including considerable wound gaping. Hexagonal keratotomy appears to be an unpredictable, unsafe surgical procedure with a high complication rate, and it should be abandoned until well-controlled experimental trials establish its safety and efficacy.
