The infant brain undergoes drastic morphological and functional development during the first year of life. Three-dimensional T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (3D T1w-MRI) is a major tool to characterize the brain anatomy, which however, manifests inherently low and rapidly changing contrast between white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM) in the infant brains (0-12 month-old). Despite the prior efforts made to maximize tissue contrast in the neonatal brains (≤1 months), optimization of imaging methods in the rest of the infancy (1-12 months) is not fully addressed, while brains in the latter period exhibit even more challenging contrast. Here, we performed a systematic investigation to improve the contrast between cortical GM and subcortical WM throughout the infancy. We first performed simultaneous T1 and proton density mapping in a normally developing infant cohort at 3T (n = 57). Based on the evolution of T1 relaxation times, we defined three age groups and simulated the relative tissue contrast between WM and GM in each group. Age-specific imaging strategies were proposed according to the Bloch simulation: inversion time (TI) around 800 ms for the 0-3 month-old group, dual TI at 500 ms and 700 ms for the 3-7 month-old group, and TI around 700 ms for 7-12 month-old group, using a centrically encoded 3D-MPRAGE sequence at 3T. Experimental results with varying TIs in each group confirmed improved contrast at the proposed optimal TIs, even in 3-7 month-old infants who had nearly isointense contrast. We further demonstrated the advantage of improved relative contrast in segmenting the neonatal brains using a multi-atlas segmentation method. The proposed age-specific optimization strategies can be easily adapted to routine clinical examinations, and the improved image contrast would facilitate quantitative analysis of the infant brain development., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Objective: Previous studies have shown a significant association between quantified liver fat content (LFC) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults, but the nature of this association in obese paediatric populations is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the quantitative relationship of LFC to MetS and its individual components in obese children and adolescents., Design: A population-based cross-sectional study., Patients and Measurements: One hundred and eighty-nine Chinese obese paediatric subjects aged 5-16 years were enrolled. Measurements included MetS components, as defined by the Chinese-specific version of the International Diabetes Foundation MetS criteria (MetS-CHN2012), and LFC using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy., Results: LFC was significantly higher in subjects with MetS [median 9.7% (interquartile range 4.5-19.9%)] than without MetS [5.7% (2.0-12.8%)] (P < 0.01). LFC was also positively associated with the total number of MetS components (P for trend <0.01). In analyses adjusted for traditional risk factors, increasing levels of LFC were associated with a greater risk of MetS, hypertriglyceridaemia and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < 0.05 for all associations), but were not associated with risk of hyperglycaemia or hypertension., Conclusions: In obese Chinese paediatric patients, quantitative measures of LFC are positively associated with the risk of MetS, hypertriglyceridaemia and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, independent of traditional risk factors. These findings suggest that quantitatively measured LFC may be a clinically useful marker for identifying obese paediatric who are at increased risk of developing MetS and its components., (© 2015 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Rice husk is an abundant agricultural by-product with the annual output of 120 and 40 million tons in the world and China, respectively. The common disposal method of rice husk in China has caused the pollution. This manuscript deals with a new method of comprehensively utilizing rice husk, by which hazardous materials are avoided to release. 100.3, 219.4, 50.1 and 170.5 g of D-xylose, organosolv lignin, ethanol and superfine silica are consecutively prepared from 1000 g of rice husk. Lignin is one of the important branched amorphous polymers, which generally has the irregular and fractal morphology. The preparation of regular sphere of lignin needs long steps and special conditions. In this study, the regular sphere of lignin can be simply prepared from rice husk (RH) under certain conditions. Namely, RH is mixed with 35% ethanol aqueous solution in the proportion of 1:10 (g:mL), non-isothermally heated to 493 K and kept for 5 h. After filtration and air-drying at room temperature, the regular lignin sphere with the diameter of 100-400 nm is obtained. The regular sphere of lignin has the potential utilization in fields such as reactive functional materials, photo sensing materials and surface active materials in cosmetics. The mechanism of formation of the regular spherical lignin is proposed and discussed in this paper.

Background: Long-term occupational exposure to cotton dust that contains endotoxin is associated with chronic respiratory symptoms and excessive decline in forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1), but the mechanisms of endotoxin-related chronic airflow obstruction remain unclear., Objective: In the current study, we examined temporal aspects of the exposure-response relationship between airborne endotoxin exposure, longitudinal change in FEV1, and respiratory symptoms in a cohort of Chinese cotton textile workers., Methods: This prospective cohort study followed 447 cotton textile workers from 1981 to 2006. at approximately 5-year intervals. We used a generalized estimating equations approach to model FEV1 level and respiratory symptoms as a function of past exposure (cumulative exposure up to the start of the most recent 5-year survey interval) and cumulative exposure (within the most recent interval) to endotoxins, after adjusting for other covariates. Models were stratified by active versus retired work status and by years employed before the baseline survey (< 5 and > or = 5 years)., Results and Conclusions: Past exposure to endotoxin was associated with reduced FEV1 level among retired cotton workers. Among all cotton workers, past exposure was more strongly associated with reduced FEV1 for those hired < 5 years before baseline than for those who were hired > or = 5 years after baseline. Recent endotoxin exposure was significantly associated with byssinosis, chronic bronchitis, and chronic cough.

Objective: We assessed the association between cotton textile work and cancer mortality., Methods: The cancer mortality experience of 912 (444 cotton, 468 silk) textile workers in Shanghai, China, was compared. Workers were followed from 1981 to 2003. The associations between cotton textile work and death due to all cancers combined (with and without lung cancer) and to gastrointestinal cancers were estimated with Cox models, adjusting for age, work years, and pack-years., Results: There were 69 deaths. The adjusted hazard rate ratio (HR) was 2.10 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.98-4.47) for all cancers combined and 2.56 (95% CI, 1.14-5.74) after excluding lung cancer. For gastrointestinal cancers, the adjusted HR was 2.09 (95% CI, 0.83-5.27)., Conclusions: These preliminary data suggest that, with the exception of lung cancer, cotton workers have significantly higher cancer mortality rates than silk workers.

Endotoxin is an important component of bio-aerosols that contribute to airway inflammation and airflow obstruction. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mediates the host response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and the Asp299Gly and Thr399Ile polymorphisms have been associated with the development of respiratory diseases. We hypothesized that TLR4 polymorphisms may be associated with a decline of lung function in cotton workers who were exposed continuously to endotoxin. We investigated these two polymorphisms in our 20-year longitudinal cohort of Han Chinese cotton and silk textile workers. The two polymorphisms were genotyped using TaqMan and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism methods. No homozygous or heterozygous variant genotypes of the Asp299Gly and Thr339Ile polymorphisms were detected in 491 samples of this population. Our results suggest that the TLR4 Asp299Gly and Thr339Ile polymorphisms are very rare in the Chinese population.

Objective: To investigate the association of restricted usage of repertoire of T cell receptor V beta (TCR V beta) with asthma., Methods: In 36 Chinese asthmatics, peripheral blood TCR V beta was studied by means of fluorescein-labeled RT-PCR as well as genescan and genotype software analysis. The clonality of the predominant usage T cell receptors was analyzed by denaturing gel electrophoresis and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) by using genescan analysis (with 377 ABI DNA sequencer)., Results: The number of cases predominantly using TCRV beta 8 gene families in asthmatics and those allergy to house dust mite (HDM) was significantly higher than that of normal controls (P = 0.0230, 0.0147), and so the TCR V beta 5.1 gene family for asthmatics allergic to HDM (P = 0.0186). It is remarkable-that only two cases in 36 asthmatics were allergic to ragweed and both of them predominantly used TCR V beta 1 gene families. The TCR V beta gene families predominantly used in asthmatics showed polyclonal expression in all normal controls and most asthmatics, but 5 asthmatics showed oligoclonal expression of TCR V beta 8 gene families., Conclusions: TCRV beta 8 and TCR V beta 5.1 gene families may be associated with allergy to HDM in asthmatics. TCR V beta gene families in asthmatic peripheral blood showed oligoclonal expression tendency.
