Abstract Background The frequent occurrence of dental caries and periodontal diseases in women during pregnancy may be due to many factors, such as salivary variables. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pregnancy on salivary pH, flow rate, the DMFT index, and CPI sores. Methods A total of 198 volunteers (pregnant in different trimesters and non- pregnant) were included for the present observational cross-sectional study. Data about sociodemographic characteristics and dental and systemic health conditions were recorded. Unstimulated saliva samples were collected for 5 min via the spitting method. The pH of the saliva was measured by a portable pH meter. The salivary flow rate was determined by the weight measurement method. The DMFT index and CPI were determined. Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate the role of serum Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), Glucagon-Like Peptide-2 (GLP-2), and Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP) levels in relation to obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnancy. Methods A case-control study was conducted, including 96 pregnant women with singleton pregnancies who underwent the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) for GDM diagnosis during the 24th–28th weeks of gestation. Blood samples were collected for measuring GLP-1, GLP-2, GIP, and fasting glucose. Statistical analyses included receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and correlation analysis. Results Among the 96 women, no significant difference in age was observed between the groups, but Body Mass Index (BMI) was significantly higher in GDM-O (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus-Obese) and non-GDM-O groups (p 0.05). Conclusions Impaired secretion of GLP-1, GLP-2, and GIP likely contributes to the pathogenesis of GDM. GLP-1 may serve as a potential biomarker for diagnosing GDM.

ABSTRACT: Feed efficiency is important for economic profitability of dairy farms; however, recording daily DMI is expensive. Our objective was to investigate the potential use of milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectral data to predict proxy phenotypes for DMI based on different cross-validation schemes. We were specifically interested in comparisons between a model that included only MIR data (model M1); a model that incorporated different energy sink predictors, such as body weight, body weight change, and milk energy (model M2); and an extended model that incorporated both energy sinks and MIR data (model M3). Models M2 and M3 also included various cow-level variables (stage of lactation, age at calving, parity) such that any improvement in model performance from M2 to M3, whether through a smaller root mean squared error (RMSE) or a greater squared predictive correlation (R2), could indicate a potential benefit of MIR to predict residual feed intake. The data used in our study originated from a multi-institutional project on the genetics of feed efficiency in US Holsteins. Analyses were conducted on 2 different trait definitions based on different period lengths: averaged across weeks versus averaged across 28 d. Specifically, there were 19,942 weekly records on 1,812 cows across 46 experiments or cohorts and 3,724 28-d records on 1,700 cows across 43 different cohorts. The cross-validation analyses involved 3 different k-fold schemes. First, a 10-fold cow-independent cross-validation was conducted whereby all records from any one cow were kept together in either training or test sets. Similarly, a 10-fold experiment-independent cross-validation kept entire experiments together, whereas a 4-fold herd-independent cross-validation kept entire herds together in either training or test sets. Based on cow-independent cross-validation for both weekly and 28-d DMI, adding MIR predictors to energy sinks (model M3 vs. M2) significantly (P < 10−10) reduced average RMSE to 1.59 kg and increased average R2 to 0.89. However, adding MIR to energy sinks (M3) to predict DMI either within an experiment-independent or herd-independent cross-validation scheme seemed to demonstrate no merit (P > 0.05) compared with an energy sink model (M2) for either R2 or RMSE (respectively, 0.68 and 2.55 kg for M2 in herd-independent scheme). We further noted that with broader cross-validation schemes (i.e., from cow-independent to experiment-independent to herd-independent schemes), the mean and slope bias increased. Given that proxy DMI phenotypes for cows would need to be almost entirely generated in herds having no DMI or training data of their own, herd-independent cross-validation assessments of predictive performance should be emphasized. Hence, more research on predictive algorithms suitable for broader cross-validation schemes and a more earnest effort on calibration of spectrophotometers against each other should be considered.

Interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4) was initially identified as a key controller in lymphocyte differentiation and function, and subsequently as a dependency factor and therapy target in lymphocyte‐derived cancers. In melanocytes, IRF4 takes part in pigmentation. Although genetic studies have implicated IRF4 in melanoma, how IRF4 functions in melanoma cells has remained largely elusive. Here, we confirmed prevalent IRF4 expression in melanoma and showed that high expression is linked to dependency in cells and mortality in patients. Analysis of genes activated by IRF4 uncovered, as a novel target category, epigenetic silencing factors involved in DNA methylation (DNMT1, DNMT3B, UHRF1) and histone H3K27 methylation (EZH2). Consequently, we show that IRF4 controls the expression of tumour suppressor genes known to be silenced by these epigenetic modifications, for instance cyclin‐dependent kinase inhibitors CDKN1A and CDKN1B, the PI3–AKT pathway regulator PTEN, and primary cilium components. Furthermore, IRF4 modulates activity of key downstream oncogenic pathways, such as WNT/β‐catenin and AKT, impacting cell proliferation and survival. Accordingly, IRF4 modifies the effectiveness of pertinent epigenetic drugs on melanoma cells, a finding that encourages further studies towards therapeutic targeting of IRF4 in melanoma.

Ageing is an inherent and intricate biological process that takes place in living organisms as time progresses. It involves the decline of multiple physiological functions, leading to body structure and overall performance modifications. The ageing process differs among individuals and is influenced by various factors, including lifestyle, environment and genetic makeup. Metabolic changes and reduced locomotor activity are common hallmarks of ageing. Our study focuses on exploring these phenomena in prematurely ageing PolgA(D257A/D257A) mice (also known as PolgA) aged 41–42 weeks, as they closely mimic human ageing. We assess parameters such as oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER) and locomotor activity using a metabolic cage for 4 days and comparing them with age‐matched wild‐type littermates (WT). Our findings revealed that VO2, VCO2, RER, locomotor activities, water intake and feeding behaviour show a daily rhythm, aligning with roughly a 24‐h cycle. We observed that the RER was significantly increased in PolgA mice compared to WT mice during the night‐time of the light–dark cycle, suggesting a shift towards a higher reliance on carbohydrate metabolism due to more food intake during the active phase. Additionally, female PolgA mice displayed a distinct phenotype with reduced walking speed, walking distance, body weight and grip strength in comparison to male PolgA and WT mice, indicating an early sign of ageing. Taken together, our research highlights the impact of sex‐specific patterns on ageing traits in PolgA mice aged 41–42 weeks, which may be attributable to human ageing phenotypes. The unique genetic composition and accelerated ageing characteristics of PolgA mice make them invaluable in ageing studies, facilitating the investigation of underlying biological mechanisms and the identification of potential therapeutic targets for age‐related diseases.

Abstract Background Patients with primary Bone Sarcoma and Giant Cell Tumors in the lower extremities often require major surgery involving tumor prostheses. The postoperative course for this patient group can be complex and influenced by various factors and challenges that demand careful nursing care. This study aims to identify challenges related to the nursing care of individuals with primary bone tumors following surgery for tumor prostheses in the lower extremities. Methods A retrospective cohort study of 15 patients treated at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark, between November 5. 2016, and April 1. 2020 was conducted by medical record review, focusing on challenges related to postoperative nursing care. All patients with the surgery code “Bone Excision” were identified within the surgery booking system and screened for eligibility. Results Patients experienced postoperative challenges such as severe pain, prolonged time to mobilization (mean: 4 days), and defecation (mean: 5 days). The mean length of stay at the Rigshospitalet was 13 days. Furthermore, eleven patients (73%) reported disrupted sleep and nausea. Conclusion Patients undergoing tumor prosthesis surgery in the lower extremities face considerable postoperative challenges that contribute to a prolonged hospital stay. These challenges, including severe pain, delayed mobilization, and gastrointestinal issues, significantly impact recovery. The findings highlight the urgent need for targeted nursing interventions to address these issues effectively. Enhanced pain management protocols, early mobilization strategies, and comprehensive postoperative care plans are essential to improve patient outcomes and reduce the length of hospital stays. Addressing these challenges through dedicated nursing care is crucial for optimizing the recovery process for patients receiving lower extremity tumor prostheses.

Abstract Isl1 has been described as an embryonic master control gene expressed in the pericloacal mesenchyme. Deletion of Isl1 from the genital mesenchyme in mice leads to an ectopic urethral opening and epispadias-like phenotype. Using genome wide association methods, we identified ISL1 as the key susceptibility gene for classic bladder exstrophy (CBE), comprising epispadias and exstrophy of the urinary bladder. The most significant marker (rs6874700) identified in our recent GWAS meta-analysis achieved a p value of 1.48 × 10− 24 within the ISL1 region. In silico analysis of rs6874700 and all other genome-wide significant markers in Linkage Disequilibrium (LD) with rs6874700 (D’ = 1.0; R2 > 0.90) revealed marker rs2303751 (p value 8.12 × 10− 20) as the marker with the highest regulatory effect predicted. Here, we describe a novel 1.2 kb intragenic promoter residing between 6.2 and 7.4 kb downstream of the ISL1 transcription starting site, which is located in the reverse DNA strand and harbors a binding site for EZH2 at the exact region of marker rs2303751. We show, that EZH2 silencing in HEK cells reduces ISL1 expression. We show that ezh2 −/− knockout (KO) zebrafish larvae display tissues specificity of ISL1 regulation with reduced expression of Isl1 in the pronephric region of zebrafish larvae. In addition, a shorter and malformed nephric duct is observed in ezh2 −/− ko zebrafish Tg(wt1ß:eGFP) reporter lines. Our study shows, that Ezh2 is a key regulator of Isl1 during urinary tract formation and suggests tissue specific ISL1 dysregulation as an underlying mechanism for CBE formation.

Abstract Significant progress has been made recently with the contribution of technological advances in studies on brain cancer. Regarding this, identifying and correctly classifying tumors is a crucial task in the field of medical imaging. The disease-related tumor classification problem, on which deep learning technologies have also become a focus, is very important in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The use of deep learning models has shown promising results in recent years. However, the sparsity of ground truth data in medical imaging or inconsistent data sources poses a significant challenge for training these models. The utilization of StyleGANv2-ADA is proposed in this paper for augmenting brain MRI slices to enhance the performance of deep learning models. Specifically, augmentation is applied solely to the training data to prevent any potential leakage. The StyleGanv2-ADA model is trained with the Gazi Brains 2020, BRaTS 2021, and Br35h datasets using the researchers’ default settings. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on datasets for brain tumor classification, resulting in a notable improvement in the overall accuracy of the model for brain tumor classification on all the Gazi Brains 2020, BraTS 2021, and Br35h datasets. Importantly, the utilization of StyleGANv2-ADA on the Gazi Brains 2020 Dataset represents a novel experiment in the literature. The results show that the augmentation with StyleGAN can help overcome the challenges of working with medical data and the sparsity of ground truth data. Data augmentation employing the StyleGANv2-ADA GAN model yielded the highest overall accuracy for brain tumor classification on the BraTS 2021 and Gazi Brains 2020 datasets, together with the BR35H dataset, achieving 75.18%, 99.36%, and 98.99% on the EfficientNetV2S models, respectively. This study emphasizes the potency of GANs for augmenting medical imaging datasets, particularly in brain tumor classification, showcasing a notable increase in overall accuracy through the integration of synthetic GAN data on the used datasets.

Abstract Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, primarily observed in populations around the Mediterranean Sea, linked to MEFV gene mutations. These mutations disrupt inflammatory responses, increasing pyrin-protein production. Traditional diagnosis relies on clinical symptoms, family history, acute phase reactants, and excluding similar syndromes with MEFV testing, which is expensive and often inconclusive due to heterozygous mutations. Here, we present a biosensor platform that detects differences in pyrin-protein levels between healthy and affected individuals, offering a cost-effective alternative to genetic testing. Our platform uses gold nanoparticle-based plasmonic chips enhanced with anti-pyrin antibodies, achieving a detection limit of 0.24 ng/mL with high specificity. The system integrates an optofluidic system and visible light spectroscopy for real-time analysis, with signal stability maintained for up to six months. Our technology will enhance FMF diagnosis accuracy, enabling early treatment initiation and providing a cost-effective alternative to genetic testing, thus improving patient care.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of immunonutritional markers, specifically the hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) score and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), in predicting late-onset fetal growth restriction (LO-FGR) during the first trimester. Materials and methods This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care center between October 2022 and August 2023. The study included a total of 213 singleton pregnancies, with 99 women in the LO-FGR group and 114 in the healthy control group, matched by maternal age and gestational age at delivery. All blood samples were collected between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation (during the first-trimester screening test). We analyzed first-trimester laboratory parameters, specifically focusing on hemoglobin levels, white blood cells (WBCs), lymphocytes, platelets, and albumin levels. Afterwards, we calculated the HALP score and PNI, and then compared the values of both groups. Abstract The understanding of the molecular pathobiology of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has spurred the identification of therapeutic targets and the development of corresponding novel targeted therapies. Since 2017, twelve agents have been approved for the treatment of AML subsets: the BCL2 inhibitor venetoclax; the CD33 antibody drug conjugate gemtuzumab ozogamicin; three FLT3 inhibitors (midostaurin, gilteritinib, quizartinib); three IDH inhibitors (ivosidenib and olutasidenib targeting IDH1 mutations; enasidenib targeting IDH2 mutations); two oral hypomethylating agents (oral poorly absorbable azacitidine; fully absorbable decitabine-cedazuridine [latter approved as an alternative to parenteral hypomethylating agents in myelodysplastic syndrome and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia but commonly used in AML]); and CPX-351 (encapsulated liposomal 5:1 molar ratio of cytarabine and daunorubicin), and glasdegib (hedgehog inhibitor). Other targeted therapies (menin inhibitors, CD123 antibody-drug conjugates) are showing promising results. To achieve optimal results in such a rare and heterogeneous entity as AML requires expertise, familiarity with this rare cancer, and the access to, and delivery of disparate therapies under rigorous supportive care conditions. In this review, we update the standard-of-care and investigational therapies and outline promising current and future research directions.

Abstract Given a large enough volume of data and precise, meaningful categories, training a statistical model to solve a classification problem is straightforward and has become a standard application of machine learning (ML). If the categories are not precise, but rather fuzzy, as in the case of scientific disciplines, the systematic failures of ML classification can be informative about properties of the underlying categories. Here we classify a large volume of academic publications using only the abstract as information. From the publications that are classified differently by journal categories and ML categories (i.e., misclassified publications, when using the journal assignment as ground truth) we construct a network among disciplines. Analysis of these misclassifications provides insight in two topics at the core of the science of science: (1) Mapping out the interplay of disciplines. We show that this misclassification network is informative about the interplay of academic disciplines and it is similar to, but distinct from, a citation-based map of science, where nodes are scientific disciplines and an edge indicates a strong co-citation count between publications in these disciplines. (2) Analyzing the success of interdisciplinarity. By evaluating the citation patterns of publications, we show that misclassification can be linked to interdisciplinarity and, furthermore, that misclassified articles have different citation frequencies than correctly classified articles: In the highest 10 percent of journals in each discipline, these misclassified articles are on average cited more frequently, while in the rest of the journals they are cited less frequently.

High systolic blood pressure and increased blood pressure variability after the onset of ischemic stroke are associated with poor clinical outcomes. One of the key determinants of blood pressure is arteriolar size, determined by vascular smooth muscle tone and vasodilatory and vasoconstrictor substances that are released by the endothelium. The aim of this study is to outline alterations in vasomotor function in isolated peripheral arteries following ischemic stroke. The reactivity of thoracic aortic segments from male C57BL/6 mice to dilators and constrictors was quantified using wire myography. Acetylcholine-induced endothelium-dependent vasodilation was impaired after ischemic stroke (LogIC50 Sham = −7.499, LogIC50 Stroke = −7.350, p = 0.0132, n = 19, 31 respectively). The vasodilatory responses to SNP were identical in the isolated aortas in the sham and stroke groups. Phenylephrine-induced vasoconstriction was impaired in the aortas isolated from the stroke animals in comparison to their sham treatment counterparts (Sham LogEC50= −6.652 vs. Stroke LogEC50 = −6.475, p < 0.001). Our study demonstrates that 24 h post-ischemic stroke, peripheral vascular responses are impaired in remote arteries. The aortas from the stroke animals exhibited reduced vasoconstrictor and endothelium-dependent vasodilator responses, while the endothelium-independent vasodilatory responses were preserved. Since both the vasodilatory and vasoconstrictor responses of peripheral arteries are impaired following ischemic stroke, our findings might explain increased blood pressure variability following ischemic stroke.

The examination of students’ motivation towards lessons is an important aspect of educational studies. The constructivist approach significantly impacts the improvement of students’ motivation. The present study aims to examine the use of the 5E learning model with concept maps to support students’ motivation and compare the 5E approach and the classical approach to teaching chemistry in terms of motivational dimensions. The main subject of this study is an assessment of students’ motivation using the 5E learning model, which promotes student-centred teaching. The study was conducted with 100 8th-grade lower secondary school students who attended a school in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) during the spring semester of the 2018/19 school year. The study was conducted with two randomly selected groups: experimental (EG) and control (CG). The lessons of the EG were taught using the 5E Learning Model Improved with Concept Maps, while lessons of the CG were conducted using the current, conventional teaching method. The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was applied as a data collection tool in the study. Descriptive statistics and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) were used in data analysis. As a result, it was determined that the EG students’ motivation scores showed a significant difference from the CG students’ motivation scores. Furthermore, a significant difference was established between the EG and CG students’ intrinsic goal orientation and test anxiety post-test scores. Although the EG students’ averages for other sub-dimensions were higher than the CG students’ averages, no significant difference was found between the groups.

Abstract Grit, a non-cognitive skill that indicates perseverance and passion for long-term goals, has been shown to predict academic achievement. This paper provides evidence that grit also predicts student outcomes during the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic. We use a unique dataset from a digital learning platform in the United Arab Emirates to construct a behavioral measure of grit. We find that controlling for baseline achievement, students who were grittier according to this measure before the pandemic, register lower declines in math and science scores during the coronavirus period. Using machine learning, behavioral data obtained from the platform prior to the pandemic can explain 77% of the variance in academic resilience. A survey measure of grit coming from the same students, on the other hand, does not have significant predictive power over performance changes. Our findings have implications for interventions on non-cognitive skills, as well as how data from digital learning platforms can be used to predict student behavior and outcomes, which we expect will be increasingly relevant as AI-based learning technologies become more common.

Abstract Background There is a general consensus among dental professionals regarding the extraction of impacted third molars in the presence of clinical symptoms. However, there is less agreement on the management of asymptomatic third molars. The objective of this study is to compare the perspectives of oral surgeons and orthodontists regarding the indications for the extraction of asymptomatic third molars. It is possible that healthcare professionals from different specialties may approach the extraction of these teeth in different ways. Methods In this cross-sectional study, a web-based questionnaire has been employed to collect data by inquiring about the reasons why participants prefer the extraction of asymptomatic third molars. Abstract Background To predict the long-term performance of restorative materials in the oral environment, it is important to evaluate their resistance to chemical and mechanical degradation and to know the toxic potential of the type and amount of ions eluted from the filling material. In this study, home bleaching was applied to dental materials with different contents and it was aimed to determine the type and amount of ions released from these materials. Methods In this study, amalgam, posterior composite resin, anterior composite resin, bulk fill composite resin, indirect composite resin, hybrid ceramic and all-ceramic were used as restorative materials. 10 specimens of each material were prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Each material group was divided into two subgroups as the bleached group and the control group. After bleaching, all specimens were stored in 1 ml of 75% ethanol/water solution. Solutions were renewed after 1, 14 and 28 days. The type and amount of ions released from the materials were determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). Data were analyzed using the Friedman, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = 0.05). Results It was determined that the amount of ions release from the restorative materials decreased over time (p 0.05). Conclusion Within the limits of this study, home bleaching system does not have a significant effect on ion release from restorative materials.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, particularly for vulnerable populations residing in confined settings such as refugee shelters: Physical distancing measures were challenging to implement in shelters due to shared rooms or communal use of kitchens and sanitary facilities, which increased the risk of infections. Meanwhile, individuals’ capabilities for individual protection strategies were severely impaired by the structure of the shelters. Consequently, shelters had the duty to develop and implement strategies for the prevention and handling of SARS-CoV-2 infections. The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of refugees, NGO employees, and shelter directors regarding COVID-19-related measures in German refugee shelters. The study aimed to identify challenges and conflicts arising from implemented measures, as well as expectations for improved support during the pandemic. Methods Semi-structured and narrative interviews were conducted with 6 refugees, 6 facility managers, 12 NGO staff, and 2 social service agency staff from February to August 2022. Qualitative content analysis was employed to analyze the data, identifying overarching themes and codes. Results The study uncovered challenges and conflicts resulting from pandemic measures, particularly mass quarantine orders, within refugee shelters. Lack of transparency and ineffective communication worsened tensions, with refugees feeling distressed and anxious. The quarantine experience had a negative impact on refugees’ mental health, which was exacerbated by limited social interaction and leisure-time activities. Shelter managers encountered administrative challenges when implementing measures due to facility constraints and limited resources, while NGO employees encountered obstacles in providing immediate assistance due to legal regulations and a lack of cooperation from shelter managers. Conclusions The study highlights that shelters are problematic institutions from a public health perspective. It shows the importance of implementing customized pandemic interventions in refugee shelters that take account of the diverse needs and experiences of both refugee and staff. To achieve this, we recommend to establish an ethics committee and involve various stakeholders in decision-making processes. Additionally, enhancing information dissemination to promote transparency and public understanding of measures is crucial. These insights can help develop comprehensive and effective pandemic plans for refugee shelters, ensuring better preparedness for future public health crises.

Background: The objectives were to evaluate the descriptive features of newborns with a diagnosis of Rhesus (Rh) hemolytic disease, to determine the morbidity and mortality rates, to evaluate the treatment methods and the factors affecting treatment requirements and clinical outcomes during a ten-year period at a tertiary center. Methods: Newborn infants who had a positive direct Coombs test and/or had a history of intrauterine transfusion (IUT) due to Rh hemolytic disease were included. The data regarding the prenatal, natal and postnatal periods were collected from hospital records. Results: A total of 260 neonates were included of which 51.2% were female. The mean ± standard deviation gestational age was 36.9 ± 2.7 weeks. The rate of preterm birth was 41.2%. Of 257 mothers whose obstetric medical history could be accessed, 87.2% were multigravida, whereas 76.3% were multiparous. Among mothers who had a reliable history of anti-D immunoglobulin prophylaxis (n=191), 51.3% had not received anti-D immunoglobulin prophylaxis in their previous pregnancies. The antenatal transfusion rate was 31.7% and the frequency of hydrops fetalis was 8.8%. While combined exchange transfusion (ET) and phototherapy (PT) was performed in 15.4% of the babies, the majority either needed phototherapy only (51.1%) or no treatment (33.5%). The mortality rate was 3.8 % (n = 10), and nine babies out of these 10 were those with severe hydrops fetalis. Conclusion: This study showed that Rh hemolytic disease is still a major problem in developing countries. Multiple comorbidities may occur in addition to life threatening complications, including hydrops fetalis, anemia and severe hyperbilirubinemia. High rates of multiparity and low rates of anti-D immunoglobulin prophylaxis are potential barriers for the eradication of the disease. Abstract Background Migraine is one of the most common primary headaches worldwide, while toothache is the most common pain in the orofacial region. The association of migraine pain, and oral pain is unknown. This study aims to investigate the association between migraine and dental and gingival pain with the presence of allodynia. Methods A questionnaire comprising demographic data with the ID-Migraine (IDM) tool, an Allodynia Symptom Checklist (ASC), and inquiries about pain and sensitivity in the teeth and gums during migraine attacks was administered to the participants and 762 responded the survey. The study classified participants based on the ASC, and the relationship between allodynia and pain/sensitivity in the teeth and/or gums during migraine attacks was analyzed. ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the components and cytokine and immunoglobulin levels of koumiss during different fermentation periods, and to reveal the interrelation between these parameters. For achieving this objective, 10 samples of koumiss were prepared and randomly divided into 2 groups: the first group was sampled at 0, 1, 5, 12, and 24 h of incubation at room temperature for analysis. The second group was stored at +4°C, and samples were taken on d 5, 10, 15, and 20. The counts of Enterobacteriaceae spp., Staphylococcus, and Micrococcus spp. progressively decreased with the period of fermentation until becoming undetectable in the final samples of both groups. We fond positive or negative correlations between cytokine and immunoglobulin levels and the physicochemical and microbiological parameters in the koumiss samples in both groups. However, the levels of IFN-γ, IL-2, TNF-α, and IgG did not change significantly over time in both groups. Overall, it is clear that traditionally prepared koumiss under different fermentation times and temperatures does not show any differences in cytokine and immunoglobulin concentrations.

In this paper we study a family of doubled and quadrupled Fibonacci type sequences obtained by distance generalization of Fibonacci sequence. In particular we obtain doubled Fibonacci sequence, doubled and quadrupled Padovan sequence and quadrupled Narayana’s sequence. We give a binomial direct formula for these sequences using graph methods, and also we derive a number of identities. Moreover, we study matrix generators of these sequences and determine connections with the Pascal’s triangle.

Teachers that identify with their organizations and find meaning at work can contribute to their students and schools from various aspects. However, there is limited evidence on teacher perceptions of organizational identification and meaningful work in the literature. The present research aims to determine the relationship between teachers' organizational identification and meaningful work perceptions. This quantitative research is in correlational design. The sample of the research consists of 330 teachers working in Kahramanmaras. The scales of meaningful work for educational organizations and organizational identification were used as data collection tools. In the analysis of the data, Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated, and regression analyses were performed. Research findings show that there is a positive, moderately significant relationship between organizational identification and meaningful work. Organizational identification is a significant predictor of meaningful work. Organizational identification has positive and moderately significant relationships with the subdimensions of meaningful work (meaning at work, transcendence at work, work relationships, meaning leadership at work, humility at work), and it is a significant predictor of these dimensions. Nevertheless, it shows no significant relationship with the dimension of search for meaning at work. Implications for identifying with organizations and meaningful work are discussed.

This article explores the perceptions of high school students of emergency remote teaching (ERT) in Turkiye. The research used the qualitative method of conducting semi-structured interviews with 144 students at higher education. The descriptive case study type (a single case with embedded units) was applied. The qualitative data collected through the interviews were analyzed using content analysis technique. Research results reveal that views of the participants on the challenges of ERT are developed into 8 themes: Digital pedagogy, technical infrastructure and accessibility, digital competences, compatibility, assessment and evaluation, heavy workload, and lack of learning motivation while their opinions on opportunities of distance education include 5 themes: lifelong learning opportunities, flexibility, experiencing ERT or hybrid education, digital transformation in education, and an alternative to student mobility. The suggestions made by students are developed into 7 themes: creating accessible materials, university and institutional IT department-supported digital technologies, adopting a flexible approach to student participation, ensuring financial support and equipment, adopting hybrid learning, developing digital competences, and evaluation and assessment methods.

The main aim of this research is to display research trends in studies on augmented reality (AR) in teaching English as a foreign language by using bibliometric mapping and content analysis. For this purpose, 64 studies in total published up to 2019 were accessed for bibliometric analysis. In addition, 49 articles published between 2007 and 2019 were reached for content analysis. The bibliometric mapping results indicated that related studies mostly focused on the effectiveness of mobile and ubiquitous learning. In addition, early childhood education, mobile learning, and gamification have become the focus of recent research. While Thorne, Azuma and Squire are the mostly cited authors in this field, Computers & Education, Educational Technology & Society, British Journal of Educational Technology and Computers in Human Behavior are among the journals cited most. Content analysis results revealed that academic achievement and motivation were the most commonly examined variables in the studies. These results revealed that most of the studies were grounded on quantitative research designs, especially experimental designs. Questionnaires and achievement tests were the most used data collection tools. While purposive sampling was the most preferred sampling method, there was an increase in the adoption of random sampling in 2011. Finally, descriptive statistics, T-tests, ANOVA-ANCOVA, and correlation analysis were mostly performed quantitative analysis methods, and content analysis was mostly used in qualitative analysis.

This case study investigated the reasons for students dropping out of a university and the experiences associated with the dropout process of individuals who dropped out of the faculty of education in Turkey. We collected data from 10 individuals who dropped out and 8 academic staff members who worked in the same faculty of state university in the Aegean region in Turkey between 2008 and 2018 using the criterion sampling technique. We collected data using semi-structured interview forms and conducted content analysis. The results revealed that pre-admission factors (I), which are the factors of guidance, personality, system, family, career, and city play decisive roles in the admission process of individuals. These factors can shape their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation before the faculty admission process. After admission, the university processes factors (II) such as psychological condition, academic condition, social condition, organizational situation, appointment factors, military service, family situation, and financial situation are determinant factors on individuals' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations in their university experience. After the dropout decision, individuals either drop out of the system or change department/university. Findings point out that the reasons for and process of the dropout are interdependent and divergent. Recommendations for future investigations and practices are presented based on our findings.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the Repeated Reading and Visual Comprehension Program (TOGAP) developed to support the reading comprehension skills of primary school students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. The research was conducted with four primary school students with SLD. The changing criterion design, one of the single-subject research designs, was utilized. Results yielded that TOGAP, developed within the scope of this study, was effective in the development of reading comprehension skills of three out of four participating students with SLD. TOGAP, targetted primary school students with SLD, is effective primarily in improving reading comprehension skills as well as increasing the number of correct words read per minute, and the rate of reading accuracy. Social validity data that shows satisfaction of all stakeholders from TOGAP, contributed to the literature in addition to quantitative data which presented the effectiveness of the program. TOGAP is suggested to be used in resource rooms in schools and special education and rehabilitation centers; to be adapted to tablets, computers etc., and to be used with students with various special educational needs.

This study examined how a video-based professional development (VBPD) initiative influenced early childhood teachers' practices. A purposive sample of 22 early childhood education teachers voluntarily participated in this study. The confidentiality of all participants was assured and their informed consent was obtained prior to the study. The design of the study was qualitative in nature and video based interventions were carried out during the research process. The study data was drawn from a larger study and collected through informal and semi-structured individual interviews. A constant comparative method of data analysis was utilised in the study. The themes identified in the data were guiding teachers' practices; self-awareness and desire to improve. The teachers expressed that VBPD was supportive for instructional awareness, instructional assessment practices, and the quantity and quality of classroom interaction. Furthermore, from the teachers' perspectives, the VBPD was found to improve their self-awareness and aid them in staying up-to-date professionally.

The present study examines the impact of the explicitness of corrective feedback and explicit associative memory on the acquisition of -ing/-ed participial adjectives through delayed video-based corrective feedback. Fifty-two L1 Spanish learners were randomly assigned to one of three groups (implicit, explicit, or no-feedback) and performed an interactive task with an experimenter via a video-conferencing tool without receiving any feedback. At the end of the task, the feedback groups received a video replay with inserted oral corrections (either partial recasts or explicit corrections). The no-feedback group performed the interactive task without receiving corrective feedback. A paired-associates test with delayed recall was used to measure explicit associative memory. Pretest-posttest development was measured using oral production and grammaticality judgment tasks. Both corrective feedback groups outperformed the no-feedback group. While no statistical difference emerged between the two delayed corrective feedback groups, a small difference was detected for the explicit group when considering effect sizes. Moreover, a positive relationship was found between explicit associative memory and learning gains on the grammaticality judgment task.

This case study examines women's experiences with religious, secular, and spiritual (RSS) diversity and interfaith engagement in three higher education institutions. The findings underscored the potential for interfaith spaces on campus to serve as platforms for women's activism and leadership, but women's experiences within these spaces were far from uniform. This study contributes to the existing literature by offering a nuanced exploration of women's experiences with RSS diversity and interfaith engagement on campus.

Providing a sustainable distance education is paramouth of importance as a highly complex process requieing the involvement of various stakeholders. The purpose of this study is to investigate the criteria affecting the sustainability of distance education (DE) in higher education institutions, and to understand the differences in several internal stakeholders' perspectives in DE via a combined group decision making approach of neutrosophic Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Copeland. The criteria affecting the sustainability of DE are identified via an in-depth literature review and expert opinions. Next, bibliometric analysis is conducted to illustrate the gap in the literature and justify the novelty of the suggested approach. Then, a novel integrated neutrosophic AHP and Copeland approach is developed to rank critical success factors by internal stakeholder's perspective. The results integrate all internal stakeholder perspectives to evaluate and improve DE. The findings can guide the practitioners to develop DE planning. The contributions of this study stem from (i) discussing DE sustainability in higher education institutions, (ii) proposing a novel neutrosophic AHP-Copeland approach, (iii) presenting all internal stakeholders, (iv) addressing the uncertainty via truth, falsity and, indeterminacy memberships autonomously.

This study aimed to understand the relationship between course activities and learning progress among students enrolled in the MicroMasters certificate program offered in an affordable MOOC-based learning platform. In order to capture the relationship, the differences between the engagement patterns of learners in the MicroMasters program compared to a non-degree MOOC were examined by utilizing machine-learning (ML) techniques in the clickstream database. The ML analyses revealed discrepancies in activity patterns and progress rates of students enrolled in MicroMaster and MOOC courses. The findings can further support optimizing the program's design to enhance learners' engagement and improve the overall completion rates.

Introduction: This article reports the physical abilities and physical wellness of three groups of children with different neurodevelopmental disabilities--Autism, Down Syndrome and Intellectual Disability. Methods: The causal-comparative research method was implemented in this study. The participants comprised 32 students with moderate intellectual disabilities, 18 with autism spectrum disorder, and 22 with Down Syndrome. The body mass index (BMI), flexibility, standing long jump, sitting height, stroke length, and medicine ball throwing levels were measured for physical fitness, and the groups were compared afterward. The Kruskal Wallis-H Test and Mann-Whitney U Test were applied to determine the differences between the groups' physical fitness averages for the statistical analysis. Results: Statistically significant differences were obtained in BMI, standing long jump, stroke length, and medicine ball throwing variables (p < 0.05). However, no statistically significant difference was discovered for the flexibility and sitting height variables (p > 0.05). The BMI, sitting height, and stroke length levels for the group with autism spectrum disorder were higher than the other groups, as the flexibility levels of the group with Down Syndrome were higher than the other groups. Students with intellectual disabilities were demonstrated to have better values than other groups regarding standing long jump and medicine ball throwing performances. Conclusions: Objective information about the physical fitness of individuals with children with different neurodevelopmental disabilities was obtained. In addition, the data obtained with these children will contribute to future plans for movement training as well as the content and frequency of the interventions, and will guide the development of new strategies to develop physical abilities and physical wellness.

Augmented reality has the potential to give students a unique experience, including when teaching science subjects. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an augmented reality-based intervention in teaching "Solar Systems and Planets" to four students with learning disabilities. The dependent variable was the percentage of the students' correct answers to the questions about the science unit. The independent variable was the augmented reality-based intervention. A multiple baseline across participants' designs was used in the study. The results showed a functional relationship between the augmented reality-based intervention and the percentage of correct answers the students gave to the questions. All four students showed significant gains immediately after receiving the intervention and maintained it between one and 5 weeks. Social validity findings also showed that students enjoyed the augmented reality-based intervention and were willing to use it in other subjects.

The purpose was to evaluate reliability of measurements during drop jump (DJ) and magnitude of differences in vertical jump height (VJH) when calculated using two variables: time-in-the-air and center-of-mass velocity. Thirty-seven handball players performed three single-leg and double-leg DJs on a portable force plate during two sessions. Sixteen outcome measures and four sets of reliability metrics, including intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), were estimated. All outcome measures, except vertical time-to-stabilization, yielded high (0.70-0.89) to very high (0.90-0.96) interday and intraday ICCs for the single-leg and double-leg DJ tests. These results indicated that the single-leg and double-leg DJ tests can be considered reliable for short-term and long-term monitoring of collegiate handball players of both sexes. In addition, the single-leg DJ VJH calculated using these two variables differed in magnitude (mean difference in test measurements: 0.64 cm, p < 0.001, effect size: 0.165). Therefore, we recommend using the same method to calculate single-leg VJH for long-term monitoring.

Research on quality assurance in higher education has been expanding globally; however, there is still scope for exploring the depth of diffusion to evaluate its impact. To this end, collaboration structures between countries and common concepts in scientific texts were examined in this study. The bibliographic mapping method was employed to analyse data that was derived from the Web of Science. "Higher education" and "Quality Assurance" were the keywords searched and bibliographical data of 3080 scientific texts were extracted. Analyses on co-authorship and co-occurrence were made through the VOSviewer software tool. According to the results, research on quality assurance in higher education spread in half of the countries in the world as of 2021. Research intensity and collaboration relationships reveal that quality assurance research is spreading geographically in North America and Europe. In terms of concepts, although there has been an expansion over the years from a limited understanding of quality management to a more comprehensive perspective of quality assurance in education, it was seen that the central and static view of quality assurance is still solid.

As global migration and transnational mobility have increased steadily in the recent few decades, interests in equity-based theories and pedagogies have intensified to respond to racially and linguistically diverse student needs in today's classrooms. In this study, we intend to (re)imagine raciolinguistic ideologies situated in non-Western educational contexts by examining language-in-education policies in Turkey and South Korea. The analyses suggest broadening the definition and viewpoint of race to understand space-specific and localized interpretations of raciolinguistic ideologies while dismantling new contemporary racism in non-Western educational contexts. Recommendations and implications for future critical examinations of racial regimes and educational policies are discussed.

This study aims to explore the experiences of breastfeeding mothers during pregnancy in tandem breastfeeding. This research is a qualitative study conducted using the phenomenological research design. Data saturation was achieved after 11 participants were interviewed. The content analysis approach was used to analyze the data. Interview transcriptions were systematically examined, and the study findings were gathered under 4 main themes within the framework of tandem breastfeeding from the perspective of breastfeeding women. These main themes consist of decision to continue tandem breastfeeding, tandem information support/search, maternal experience in tandem breastfeeding, and recommendations for mothers. The participants mostly shared their experiences in the effects of tandem breastfeeding on child health, pregnancy, and breast milk. Both mothers' own beliefs and feelings and community beliefs affected their decision to continue tandem breastfeeding. Mothers who tandem breastfed in this study need information and support.

Background: The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the experiences of physical education (PE) teachers regarding online PE lessons for children with ASD during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Participants in this study were 16 PE teachers who took part in one-on-one semi-structured phone interviews. Interview data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's recipe for thematic analysis. Result: Four overarching themes were found: (1) we were unprepared for online lessons; (2) challenges of online lessons; (3) parental support; and (4) solution offers. Conclusion: The results revealed that PE teachers were unprepared for the sudden transition to online lessons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. PE teachers started the online teaching with parent support despite the challenges, but they were not satisfied with the online PE model.

Abstract Background Fowl adenovirus-4 is a causative agent of hydropericardium hepatitis syndrome (HHS) in chickens and has been frequently reported from many countries. Fowl adenoviruses cause severe disease and mortality in broiler and layer breeders in Azerbaijan. Therefore, in this study, pathological lesions and the dissemination of fowl adenovirus-4 into the visceral organs of infected birds were investigated as well as molecular characterisation of detected strains. For this, liver, heart and spleen from 20 necropsied chickens originated from a broiler breeder flock and a layer breeder flock were embeded on the FTA cards and the samples were analysed for adenovirus-DNA by PCR and sequencing. Results The findings of necropsy in both broiler and layer breeder chickens were similar, and the liver was severely effected showing hepatitis, and the heart with hydropericardium lesions. The kidneys were swollen with haemorrhages and small white foci on the surface of the spleens were noted. Intestinal congestion and ecchymotic hemorrhages were also observed in some birds. Fowl adenovirus-4-DNA was detected by PCR in all collected organs of 20 birds. The sequence analysis revealed that fowl adenovirus-4 present in Azerbaijan and close similarity of the hexon genes of the adenoviruses existing in the Middle East, North America, far east and Indian subcontinent were determined by phylogenetic analysis. However, sequence diversity was detected from the adenovirus strains circulating in Europe, North and South America. Conclusions This study indicates the impact of fowl adenovirus-4 on the poultry health and production, and improved disease control and prevention strategies are necessary to reduce the HHS disease in chickens in Azerbaijan.
