Abstract As a desirable agricultural trait, multilocular trait of rapeseed (Brassica rapa; Brassica napus; Brassica juncea), always represents higher yield per plant compared with bilocular plants. We previously isolated a trilocular gene locus, Bjmc1, and identified a set of molecular markers linked to the trilocular gene. With a map-based cloning, we identified that the BjMc1 was located in B genome of Brassica juncea, and it was a CLAVATA1 (CLV1) gene homologue. The insertion of a copia-LTR retrotransposable element 1 (RTE1) into the coding region of BjMc1 interrupted its transcription in rapeseed, leading to the trilocular phenotype. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Mc1 genes were conserved and widespread in land plants. Two amino acid sites had undergone positive selection in the ancestor of Mc1 genes, and then purifying selection was the dominant force after the divergence of dicots and monocots from their common ancestor in the evolutionary process, indicating that Mc1 genes are conserved in modern land plants. Our results provided new insights in molecular regulatory mechanism of multilocularity in rapeseed, and better understanding of molecular mechanism in crop yield improvement.

Abstract The Warburg effect is a metabolic hallmark of cancer. Tumor cells rapidly adjust their energy source to glycolysis in order to efficiently proliferate in a hypoxic environment, but the mechanism underlying this switch remains incompletely understood. Here, we show that hypoxia potently induces the down-regulation of miR-125a expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells and tumors. Furthermore, we demonstrate that miR-125a could decrease the production of lactate, the uptake of glucose, and the levels of ATP and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in HCC cells. We investigated the molecular mechanism through which miR-125a inhibits HCC glycolysis and identified hexokinase II (HK2) as a direct target gene of miR-125a. Finally, we revealed that the miR-125a/HK2 axis is functionally important for regulating glycolysis of HCC cell and progression of cancer in vitro and in vivo. In summary, our findings demonstrate for the first time that hypoxia-down-regulated miR-125a regulated HCC glycolysis and carcinogenesis by targeting hexokinase HK2, a key glycolytic enzyme for the Warburg effect, and add a new dimension to hypoxia-mediated regulation of cancer metabolism.

Abstract Selection breeding has played a key role in the improvement of seed yield and quality in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). We genotyped Tapidor (European), Ningyou7 (Chinese) and their progenitors with the Brassica 60 K Illumina Infinium SNP array and mapped a total of 29,347 SNP markers onto the reference genome of Darmor-bzh. Identity by descent (IBD) refers to a haplotype segment of a chromosome inherited from a shared common ancestor. IBDs identified on the C subgenome were larger than those on the A subgenome within both the Tapidor and Ningyou7 pedigrees. IBD number and length were greater in the Ningyou7 pedigree than in the Tapidor pedigree. Seventy nine QTLs for flowering time, seed quality and root morphology traits were identified in the IBDs of Tapidor and Ningyou7. Many more candidate genes had been selected within the Ningyou7 pedigree than within the Tapidor pedigree. These results highlight differences in the transfer of favorable gene clusters controlling key traits during selection breeding in Europe and China.

Newcastle disease (ND) and infectious bronchitis (IB) are important diseases, which cause respiratory diseases in chickens, resulting in severely economic losses in the poultry industry. In this study, N-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (N-2-HACC) and N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) were synthesized as adjuvant and delivery carrier for vaccine antigens. N-2-HACC-CMC/NDV/IBV nanoparticles (NPs) (NDV/La Sota and IBV/H120 encapsulated in N-2-HACC-CMC NPs) and N-2-HACC-CMC/NDV-IBV NPs (the mixing of N-2-HACC-CMC/NDV NPs and N-2-HACC-CMC/IBV NPs in a ratio of 1:1) were prepared by the polyelectrolyte composite method, respectively. Both nanoparticles exhibited lower cytotoxicity and higher stability. Their bioactivities were maintained when they were stored at 37 °C for three weeks. Release assay in vitro showed that both NDV and IBV could be sustainably released from the nanoparticles after an initial burst release. In vivo immunization of chickens showed that N-2-HACC-CMC/NDV/IBV NPs or N-2-HACC-CMC/NDV-IBV NPs intranasally induced higher titers of IgG and IgA antibodies, significantly promoted proliferation of lymphocytes and induced higher levels of interleukine-2 (IL-2), IL-4 and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) than the commercially combined attenuated live vaccine did. This is the first study in the field of animal vaccines demonstrating that intranasal administration of chickens with antigens (NDV and IBV) encapsulated with chitosan derivative could induce humoral, cellular, and mucosal immune responses, which protected chickens from the infection of highly virulent NDV and IBV. This study indicated that N-2-HACC-CMC could be used as an efficient adjuvant and delivery carrier for further development of mucosal vaccines and drugs and could have an immense application potential in medicine.

C4F7N is one of the most remarkable replacements for SF6, and its decomposition mechanism has a great influence on insulating performance and environmental properties. It is noteworthy that discharges or high temperature also evaporates metal electrodes (e.g., Cu) in the equipment, and the generated metal gases interact with C4F7N and thus affect the C4F7N decomposition mechanism, but the decomposition mechanism is still not clear. In this paper, therefore, the B3LYP method in conjunction with 6-311G(d, p) basis set (for C, N, and F atoms) and Lanl2DZ basis set (for Cu atom) combining transition state theory is used to study the decomposition mechanism of C4F7N-Cu mixtures. 31 reactions are determined in decomposition pathways of C4F7N-Cu mixtures, and their potential energy surface as well as reaction mechanisms are obtained. The rate constants over 300 K–3500 K relevant to the insulation breakdown temperature are calculated based on the above calculations, and dominant reactions in different temperature regions are selected. The results show that (R14) C4F7N + Cu → CF3CFCN + CF2CuF plays a major role in the decomposition of C4F7N-Cu mixtures below 1500 K, while (R1) C4F7N + Cu → TSa1 → CuCN + C3F7 and (R21) C4F7N + Cu → TSc1 → CF3CF(CN)CF2 + CuF are dominant above 1500 K; (R23) CF3CF(CN)CF2 + Cu → CF2(Cu)C(F)CN + CF3 is the most important reaction leading to the generation of CF3 below 1500 K with the overwhelming rate constant, but other reactions also generating CF3 are dominant above 1500 K.

The variation characteristics of C5F10O decomposition components at 300 K – 3500 K are studied with a chemical kinetic model considering neutral reactions. Three chemical kinetic models of SF6 breakdown are built to verify the model adopted (model C) and the results show that ion/electron participated reactions slightly change the molar fractions, which are lower than 10-14 with little influence on the insulating performance of SF6. Therefore, model C is reasonable to study the varying characteristics of C5F10O decomposition components and thus the molar fractions of C5F10O decomposition products under different temperature decreasing curves and pressures are calculated. The results show that the molar fraction of C5F10O grows to approximately one as temperature declining to 1,500 K and the temperature decreasing rates have similar affects on the relaxation time of the reactions generating C5F10O. And high pressure promotes species recombining to C5F10O by increasing the molar fractions of C5F10O decomposition components. The results can be used to evaluate C5F10O insulating performance.

Biofilms formed by multidrug-resistant bacteria are a major cause of hospital-acquired infections. Cold atmospheric-pressure plasma (CAP) is attractive for sterilization, especially to disrupt biofilms formed by multidrug-resistant bacteria. However, the underlying molecular mechanism is not clear. In this study, CAP effectively reduced the living cells in the biofilms formed by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and 6 min treatment with CAP reduced the S. aureus cells in biofilms by 3.5 log10. The treatment with CAP caused the polymerization of SaFtsZ and SaClpP proteins in the S. aureus cells of the biofilms. In vitro analysis demonstrated that recombinant SaFtsZ lost its self-assembly capability, and recombinant SaClpP lost its peptidase activity after 2 min of treatment with CAP. Mass spectrometry showed oxidative modifications of a cluster of peaks differing by 16 Da, 31 Da, 32 Da, 47 Da, 48 Da, 62 Da, and 78 Da, induced by reactive species of CAP. It is speculated that the oxidative damage to proteins in S. aureus cells was induced by CAP, which contributed to the reduction of biofilms. This study elucidates the biological effect of CAP on the proteins in bacterial cells of biofilms and provides a basis for the application of CAP in the disinfection of biofilms.

Melamine-resin microspheres were synthesized at a pH of 4.0 for 20 min and used as silver nanoparticle (AgNP) carriers for surface enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) detection. An acetic acid–treatment reaction was introduced into the fabrication of the final substrate. The SERRS performance of the substrate was effectively optimized by regulating excess formaldehyde and experimental parameters, such as acidity, number of treatments and reaction temperature in the acid-treatment reaction. Based on the SERRS detection, it was declared that a trace amount of oligomers with a certain degree of polymerization is necessary for the construction of SERRS hotspots. In addition, it is important to remove excess oligomers with reference to the synthetic reaction of the polymer materials, given the special role of oligomers and the wide application of polymer materials in SERRS detection.

Ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury is a major issue in cardiac transplantation and inflammatory processes play a major role in myocardial IR injury. MicroRNA 26a (Mir-26a) plays important roles in cellular differentiation, cell growth, cell apoptosis and metastasis. Mir-26a has been demonstrated to modulate regulatory T cells expansion and attenuates renal IR injury. However, the role of Mir-26a in the cardiac IR injury has never been investigated. In our study, hearts of C57BL/6 mice were flushed and stored in cold Bretschneider solution for 8 hours and then transplanted into syngeneic recipients. The results demonstrate a crucial role for Mir-26a in inhibiting high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) expression and attenuating cardiac IR injury. Mir-26a overexpression results in attenuated cardiac IR injury and inhibited HMGB1 expression. Mir-26a also inhibits inflammatory cells infiltration and cytokines expression. Furthermore, the attenuated cardiac IR injury induced by Mir-26a was abrogated by additional administration of recombinant HMGB1 (rHMGB1). In conclusion, Mir-26a plays a protective role in cardiomyocyte IR injury and this is associated with inhibited HMGB1 expression.

A compact plasmonic nanofilter based on the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with an Archimedes' spiral structure is proposed and demonstrated by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The simulation results indicate that the transmission valley and peak can be tuned by the rotation angle θ of the right-handed Archimedes spiral structure and the number of channels can be adjusted by number of right-handed Archimedes spiral rings. The characteristics of the transmission spectra could be explained by the resonant condition, which is in good agreement with the FDTD numerical simulation. The unique feature may have many potential applications in filter, sensor, and photonic integrated circuits.

To adapt to the growing scale of renewable energy and improve the consume ability of the power system, it is necessary to design a highly adaptable planning scheme for high penetration of the renewable energy integrated system. Thus, this paper firstly gives the conception of system adaptability and designs an adaptability index system, which considers the supply and demand balance, operation state, and network structure of the high penetrated renewable energy integrated system. It can help to comprehensively evaluate the system ability towards uncertain shocks. Then, a two-stage source-grid coordinative expansion planning model is presented. The adaptability indexes of supply and demand balance are used as objection of the source planning stage, the adaptability indexed of the operation state and network structure are used to guide the grid planning stage. The model is further solved based on the coordination between the source and grid planning stage. Finally, the case study verifies that the obtained optimal plan has good adaptability to the impact of renewable energy on the power supply capacity and security operation.

As a widely used insulating medium, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a greenhouse gas with very high global warming potential (GWP). Some carbon-fluoride gases have potential to replace SF6 in insulating applications. In order to reveal their different dielectric performance, this paper is devoted to a comparative study of dielectric breakdown properties for SF6 and four carbon-fluoride insulating gases i.e. CF3I, C2F6, C3F8, and c-C4F8 mixed with CO2, N2, and CF4 based on the numerical solution of Boltzmann equation. The electron energy distribution function (EEDF), reduced ionization coefficients α/N, reduced electron attachment coefficients η/N, and reduced critical electric field strength (E/N)cr are compared for various gas mixtures. Generally c-C4F8 presents the largest dielectric strength among the four carbon-fluoride insulating gases whichever buffer gas is mixed, while C2F6 presents the lowest dielectric strength. In terms of (E/N)cr and GWP, CF3I is a good eco-friendly insulating medium. However, with the addition of buffer gases, the (E/N)cr of CF3I mixtures declines more quickly than other mixtures. It is also found that the mixing of CF4 makes insulating mixtures depend more linearly on the proportions of buffer gas than CO2 and N2.

ABSTRACT Long-term survivors of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been shown to have a greatly increased incidence of B cell lymphomas. This increased lymphomagenesis suggests some link between HIV infection and the destabilization of the host B cell genome, a phenomenon also suggested by the extraordinary high frequency of mutation, insertion, and deletion in the broadly neutralizing HIV antibodies. Since HIV does not infect B cells, the molecular mechanisms of this genomic instability remain to be fully defined. Here, we demonstrate that the cell membrane-permeable HIV Tat proteins enhance activation-induced deaminase (AID)-mediated somatic hypermutation (SHM) of antibody V regions through their modulation of the endogenous polymerase II (Pol II) transcriptional process. Extremely small amounts of Tat that could come from bystander HIV-infected cells were sufficient to promote SHM. Our data suggest HIV Tat is one missing link between HIV infection and the overall B cell genomic instability in AIDS patients. IMPORTANCE Although the introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has successfully controlled primary effects of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, such as HIV proliferation and HIV-induced immune deficiency, it did not eliminate the increased susceptibility of HIV-infected patients to B cell lymphomas. We find that a secreted HIV protein, Tat, enhances the intrinsic antibody diversification mechanism by increasing the AID-induced somatic mutations at the heavy-chain variable (VH) regions in human B cells. This could contribute to the high rate of mutation in the variable regions of broadly neutralizing anti-HIV antibodies and the genomewide mutations leading to B cell malignancies in HIV carriers.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major cause of serious nosocomial infections, and recurrent MRSA infections primarily result from the survival of persister cells after antibiotic treatment. Gas plasma, a novel source of ROS (reactive oxygen species) and RNS (reactive nitrogen species) generation, not only inactivates pathogenic microbes but also restore the sensitivity of MRSA to antibiotics. This study further found that sublethal treatment of MRSA with both plasma and plasma-activated saline increased the antibiotic sensitivity and promoted the eradication of persister cells by tetracycline, gentamycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, rifampicin, and vancomycin. The short-lived ROS and RNS generated by plasma played a primary role in the process and induced the increase of many species of ROS and RNS in MRSA cells. Thus, our data indicated that the plasma treatment could promote the effects of many different classes of antibiotics and act as an antibiotic sensitizer for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacteria involved in infectious diseases.

Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek is an herb widely used for the clinical treatment of colds, fever, and influenza in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The roots, stems and leaves can be used as natural medicine, in which indigo and indirubin are two main active ingredients. In this study, quantification of indigo, indirubin, indican and adenosine among various tissues of B. cusia was conducted using HPLC-DAD. Leaves have significantly higher contents than stems and roots (380.66, 315.15, 20,978.26, 4323.15 μg/g in leaves, 306.36, 71.71, 3,056.78, 139.45 μg/g in stems, and 9.31, 7.82, 170.45, 197.48 μg/g in roots, respectively). De novo transcriptome sequencing of B. cusia was performed for the first time. The sequencing yielded 137,216,248, 122,837,394 and 140,240,688 clean reads from leaves, stems and roots respectively, which were assembled into 51,381 unique sequences. A total of 33,317 unigenes could be annotated using the databases of Nr, Swiss-Prot, KEGG and KOG. These analyses provided a detailed view of the enzymes involved in indican backbone biosynthesis, such as cytochrome P450, UDP-glycosyltransferase, glucosidase and tryptophan synthase. Analysis results showed that tryptophan synthase was the candidate gene involved in the tissue-specific biosynthesis of indican. We also detected sixteen types of simple sequence repeats in RNA-Seq data for use in future molecular mark assisted breeding studies. The results will be helpful in further analysis of B. cusia functional genomics, especially in increasing biosynthesis of indican through biotechnological approaches and metabolic regulation.

C5F10O has recently been found to be a very promising alternative to SF6. This paper is devoted to the investigation of compositions, thermodynamic properties, and transport coefficients of high-temperature C5F10O mixed with CO2 and O2. Firstly, the partition functions and enthalpies of formation for a few molecules (CxFy and CxFyO) which are likely to exist in the mixtures, are calculated based on the G4(MP2) theory. The isomers of the above molecules are selected according to their Gibbs energy. The compositions of C5F10O-CO2-O2 mixtures are then determined using the minimization of the Gibbs free energy. Next, the thermodynamic properties (mass density, specific enthalpy, and specific heat) are derived from the previously calculated compositions. Lastly, the transport coefficients (electrical conductivity, viscosity, and thermal conductivity) are calculated based on Chapman-Enskog method. It is found that, as an arc quenching gas, C5F10O could not recombine into itself with the temperature decreasing down to room temperature after the arc extinction. Besides, the key species at room temperature are always CF4, CO2, and C4F6 if graphite is not considered. When taken into account, graphite will replace C4F6 as one of the dominate particles. The mixing of CO2 with C5F10O plasma significantly affects the thermodynamic properties (e.g. vanishing and/or shifting of the peaks in specific heat) and transport coefficients (e.g. reducing viscosity and changing the number of peaks in thermal conductivity), while the addition of O2 with C5F10O-CO2 mixtures has no remarkable influence on both thermodynamic and transport properties.

This work focuses on the calculation of state space for linear system of simple sequential processes with resources (LS 3 PR). The method, different from reachability graphs rendering high computational complexity, finds reachable markings by combinatorics. First, the set of invariant markings can be obtained by combinatorics if the influence of deadlocks is ignored. Unfortunately, some of reachable states in the set of invariant markings are proved to be spurious if deadlocks exist. Second, we find the spurious markings by computing a set of minimal spurious markings, which can be calculated by a proposed algorithm based on strict minimal siphons. The obtained spurious markings are proved to cover all the spurious markings of the LS 3 PR. Removing the spurious markings from the set of invariant markings, the left ones constitute the state space of the LS 3 PR. The detailed method is shaped to an algorithm. The effectiveness of the algorithm is proved by example calculation and analysis. Finally, we analyze the computational complexity of the proposed method compared with reachability graphs.

Aims. To examine the association between Type D personality and HbA1c level and to explore the mediating role of medication adherence between them in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods. 330 patients went on to complete a self-report measure of medication adherence and the HbA1c tests. Chi-square test, T test, Ordinary Least Square Regression (OLS), and Recentered Influence Function Regression (RIF) were employed. Results. Patients with Type D personality had significantly higher HbA1c value (P0.1). On the other hand, when Type D personality was operationalized as a continuous variable, only SI trait was associated with HbA1c level (P

The performance of underwater acoustic (UWA) communication is heavily dependent on channel estimation, which is predominantly researched by simulating UWA channels modelled in complex and dynamic underwater environments. In UWA channels modelling, the measurement-based approach provides an accurate method. However, acquirement of environment data and simulation processes are scenario-specific and thus not cost-effective. To overcome such restraints, this article proposes a comprehensive simulation platform that combines UWA channel modelling with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channel estimation, allowing users to model UWA channels for different ocean environments and simulate channel estimation with configurable input parameters. Based on the simulation platform, three independent simulations are conducted to determine the impacts of receiving depth, sea bottom boundary, and sea surface boundary on channel estimation. The simulations show that UWA channel estimation is greatly affected by underwater environments. The effect can be mainly attributed to changing acoustic rays tracing which result in fluctuating time delay and amplitude. With 10 m receiving depth and flat sea bottom, the channel estimation achieves optimal performance. Further study indicates that the sea surface has stochastic effects on channel estimation. As the significant wave height (SWH) increases, the average performance of channel estimation shows improvements.

This paper presents the problem of obstacle avoidance with bearing-only measurements in the case that the obstacle motion is model-free, i.e., its acceleration is absolutely unknown, which cannot be dealt with by the mainstream Kalman-like schemes based on the known motion model. First, the essential reason of the collision caused by local minimum problem in the standard artificial potential field method is proved, and hence a revised method with angle dependent factor is proposed. Then, an unknown input observer is proposed to estimate the position and velocity of the obstacle. Finally, the numeric simulation demonstrates the effectiveness in terms of estimation accuracy and terminative time.

The ethanol extract of the whole plants of Viburnum mongolicum afforded six new nor-dammarane triterpenoids: 3β,12β-dihydroxy-25,26,27-trinordammara-22-en -24,20-olide (1), 3β,12β-dihydroxy-24α-methoxy-25,26,27-trinordammara-20,24-epoxy (2), 3β-O-acetyl-12β-hydroxy-23,24,25,26,27-hexanordammarane-20-one (3), 12β-O- acetyl-15α-hydroxy-17β-methoxy-3-oxo-20,21,22-23,24,25,26,27-octanordammanrane (4), 12β-O-acetyl-15α,17β-dihydroxy-3-oxo-20,21,22-23,24,25,26,27-octanordammanrane (5), and 12β,15α-dihydroxy-3-oxo-17-en-20,21,22-23,24,25,26,27-octanordammanrane (6), together with two known nor-dammarane triterpenoids, 12β-hydroxy-3-oxo-24α-methoxy- 25,26,27-trinordammara-20,24-epoxy (7) and 3β,12β-dihydroxy-23,24,25,26,27- hexanordammarane-20-one (8). The structures of the isolated compounds were established based on 1D and 2D (1H-1H COSY, HMQC, and HMBC) NMR spectroscopy, in addition to high resolution mass spectrometry. The isolated compounds were tested in vitro for cytotoxic potential against seven tumor cell lines and radical scavenging activities. Compounds 4–6 exhibited significant cytotoxic activities against all tested tumor cell lines and radical scavenging activities against ABTS·+ radicals comparable with the standard drug Trolox.

Due to the high global warming potential (GWP) and increasing environmental concerns, efforts on searching the alternative gases to SF6, which is predominantly used as insulating and interrupting medium in high-voltage equipment, have become a hot topic in recent decades. Overcoming the drawbacks of the existing candidate gases, C5- perfluorinated ketone (C5 PFK) was reported as a promising gas with remarkable insulation capacity and the low GWP of approximately 1. Experimental measurements of the dielectric strength of this novel gas and its mixtures have been carried out, but the chemical decomposition pathways and products of C5 PFK during breakdown are still unknown, which are the essential factors in evaluating the electric strength of this gas in high-voltage equipment. Therefore, this paper is devoted to exploring all the possible decomposition pathways and species of C5 PFK by density functional theory (DFT). The structural optimizations, vibrational frequency calculations and energy calculations of the species involved in a considered pathway were carried out with DFT-(U)B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) method. Detailed potential energy surface was then investigated thoroughly by the same method. Lastly, six decomposition pathways of C5 PFK decomposition involving fission reactions and the reactions with a transition states were obtained. Important intermediate products were also determined. Among all the pathways studied, the favorable decomposition reactions of C5 PFK were found, involving C-C bond ruptures producing Ia and Ib in pathway I, followed by subsequent C-C bond ruptures and internal F atom transfers in the decomposition of Ia and Ib presented in pathways II + III and IV + V, respectively. Possible routes were pointed out in pathway III and lead to the decomposition of IIa, which is the main intermediate product found in pathway II of Ia decomposition. We also investigated the decomposition of Ib, which can undergo unimolecular reactions to give the formation of IV a, IV b and products of CF3 + CF-CF3 in pathway IV. Although IV a is dominant to a lesser extent due to its relative high energy barrier, its complicated decomposition pathway V was also studied and CF3, C = CF2 as well as C-CF3 species were found as the ultimate products. To complete the decomposition of C5 PFK, pathway V I of Ic decomposition was fully explored and the final products were obtained. Therefore, the integrate decomposition scheme of C5 PFK was proposed, which contains six pathways and forty-eight species (including all the reactants, products and transition states). This work is hopeful to lay a theoretical basis for the insulating properties of C5 PFK.

Type D personality and medication nonadherence have been shown to be associated with poor health outcomes. Type D personality is associated with poor medication adherence in patients with coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. However, the relationship between type D personality and medication adherence in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) remains unknown. Low molecular weight heparins are complex polycomponent drugs that have recently become amenable to top-down analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Even using open source deconvolution software, DeconTools, and automatic structural assignment software, GlycReSoft, the comparison of two or more low molecular weight heparins is extremely time-consuming, taking about a week for an expert analyst and provides no guarantee of accuracy. Efficient data processing tools are required to improve analysis. This study uses the programming language of Microsoft Excel™ Visual Basic for Applications to extend its standard functionality for macro functions and specific mathematical modules for mass spectrometric data processing. The program developed enables the comparison of top-down analytical glycomics data on two or more low molecular weight heparins. The current study describes a new program, GlycCompSoft, which has a low error rate with good time efficiency in the automatic processing of large data sets. The experimental results based on three lots of Lovenox®, Clexane® and three generic enoxaparin samples show that the run time of GlycCompSoft decreases from 11 to 2 seconds when the data processed decreases from 18000 to 1500 rows.

Improving seed oil yield and quality are central targets in rapeseed (Brassica napus) breeding. The primary goal of our study was to examine and compare the potential and the limits of marker-assisted selection and genome-wide prediction of six important seed quality traits of B. napus. Our study is based on a bi-parental population comprising 202 doubled haploid lines and a diverse validation set including 117 B. napus inbred lines derived from interspecific crosses between B. rapa and B. carinata. We used phenotypic data for seed oil, protein, erucic acid, linolenic acid, stearic acid, and glucosinolate content. All lines were genotyped with a 60k SNP array. We performed five-fold cross-validations in combination with linkage mapping and four genome-wide prediction approaches in the bi-parental population. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) with large effects were detected for erucic acid, stearic acid, and glucosinolate content, blazing the trail for marker-assisted selection. Despite substantial differences in the complexity of the genetic architecture of the six traits, genome-wide prediction models had only minor impacts on the prediction accuracies. We evaluated the effects of training population size, marker density and phenotyping intensity on the prediction accuracy. The prediction accuracy in the independent and genetically very distinct validation set still amounted to 0.14 for protein content and 0.17 for oil content reflecting the utility of the developed calibration models even in very diverse backgrounds.

Few studies have looked at the relationship between psychological and the mental health status of pregnant women in rural China. The current study aims to explore the potential mediating effect of negative automatic thoughts between negative life events and antenatal depression.Data were collected in June 2012 and October 2012. 495 rural pregnant women were interviewed. Depressive symptoms were measured by the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale, stresses of pregnancy were measured by the pregnancy pressure scale, negative automatic thoughts were measured by the automatic thoughts questionnaire, and negative life events were measured by the life events scale for pregnant women. We used logistic regression and path analysis to test the mediating effect.The prevalence of antenatal depression was 13.7%. In the logistic regression, the only socio-demographic and health behavior factor significantly related to antenatal depression was sleep quality. Negative life events were not associated with depression in the fully adjusted model. Path analysis showed that the eventual direct and general effects of negative automatic thoughts were 0.39 and 0.51, which were larger than the effects of negative life events.This study suggested that there was a potentially significant mediating effect of negative automatic thoughts. Pregnant women who had lower scores of negative automatic thoughts were more likely to suffer less from negative life events which might lead to antenatal depression.

Partial discharge (PD) is not only an important symptom for monitoring the imperfections in the insulation system of a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), but also the factor that accelerates the degradation. At present, monitoring ultra-high-frequency (UHF) signals induced by PDs is regarded as one of the most effective approaches for assessing the insulation severity and classifying the PDs. Therefore, in this paper, a deep learning-based PD classification algorithm is proposed and realized with a multi-column convolutional neural network (CNN) that incorporates UHF spectra of multiple resolutions. First, three subnetworks, as characterized by their specified designed temporal filters, frequency filters, and texture filters, are organized and then intergraded by a fully-connected neural network. Then, a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is utilized for fusing the embedded multi-sensor information. Furthermore, to alleviate the risk of overfitting, a transfer learning approach inspired by manifold learning is also present for model training. To demonstrate, 13 modes of defects considering both the defect types and their relative positions were well designed for a simulated GIS tank. A detailed analysis of the performance reveals the clear superiority of the proposed method, compared to18 typical baselines. Several advanced visualization techniques are also implemented to explore the possible qualitative interpretations of the learned features. Finally, a unified framework based on matrix projection is discussed to provide a possible explanation for the effectiveness of the architecture.

In this paper, a generalized L-shaped nested array based on the fourth-order difference co-array is proposed for two-dimensional (2D) directions’ estimation. The new structure framework makes full use of the physical sensor locations to form a virtual uniform rectangular array (URA) as large as possible. As it utilizes the fourth-order difference instead of the traditional second-order difference result, this structure framework can acquire a much higher degree-of-freedom (DOF) than the existing 2D sparse arrays. The proposed structures have two advantages. One is that the subarrays can be chosen as any nested-class arrays, which makes the sparse array design more flexible. We can choose arbitrary subarray structures for DOF enhancement purposes. Another advantage is that the relative position of two subarrays can be set as any integral multiple of half wavelength. This means that two subarrays can be located as far as possible so that the relative influence between two physical subarrays can be ignored. The DOFs of several typical generalized L-shaped nested arrays (GLNAs) are compared in this paper. By setting the subarrays as different types and the relative position as a special value, a special GLNA is presented. Simulations show that GLNAs have obvious superiority in 2D direction-of-arrival estimation.

Turbidity is an indicator of the quality of water and usually exhibits variability associated with changing hydrodynamic conditions, which can be reflected in the sediment dynamics in coastal regions. Darwin Harbour is a typical macro-tidal, well mixed, and complex environment influenced by industries, human activities, and natural factors—including winds, currents, river discharges, waves, and tides. As a case study, hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in Darwin Harbour are investigated using moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) measurements. This study focuses on understanding the variability of turbidity, mechanisms that control the variations of turbidity and analyzing field data to determine the main factors that influence the sediment dynamics in Darwin Harbour. The results of this study illustrate the seasonal turbidity variation is mainly influenced by the wind waves. The dredging campaigns in 2013 and 2014 wet seasons contributed to the rise of turbidity in Darwin Harbour. The action of tidal currents appears to be the dominant factor controlling the turbidity pattern in a spring–neap cycle and the turbidity intra-tidal variation. In addition, the turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) near Charles Point is formed by the tidal current convergence based on the results of current modelling.

The objective of this study was to examine rates of depression among migrant children (MC) and left-behind children (LBC) as compared to non-left-behind children (NLBC) and also to examine the relationship between depression among these children and the quality of their parent-child and teacher-child relationships. This study collected data from a large sample of 3,759 children aged from 8 to 17 years, including 824 who had been left behind by one parent (LBCO), 423 who had been left behind by both parents (LBCB), 568 MC and 1944 NLBC. Children's Depression Inventory-Short Form was used to measure child depression. Parent-Child Relationship Scale (PCRS) and Teacher-Child Relationship Scale (TCRS) were used to measure the quality of parent-child and teacher-child relationships, respectively. The results showed that the prevalence of depression was 10.5% among NLBC, 13.1% among LBCO, 16.1% among LBCB, and 20.1% among MC. Depression was related to parent-child relationship quality and teacher-child relationship quality. Negative parent-child relationship was more relevant to depression than negative teacher-child relationship among LBCB, while negative teacher-child relationship was the most correlated with depression among MC.

The delivery of mental health services in rural China has been notably limited due to lack of qualified mental health professionals among other impeding factors. A village doctor-based cognitive behavioral therapy intervention may be one way of improving accessibility. The purpose of this study was to explore the advantages and challenges of implementing this intervention, as delivered by trained village doctors, to treat late-life depression in rural China.We conducted one focus group discussion with 10 village doctors, 10 individual interviews with each of the village doctors, and individual interviews with 19 older adults. The topic guides were advantages and challenges of the intervention program from the perspective of the village doctors and older adults. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, coded using NVivo 8, and analyzed using thematic analysis.The village doctors stressed the importance of role-playing and using instructive manuals in the training. Proper supervision was also a key component of the program. The benefits received from the intervention for the village doctors and the elders were positive such that both the doctors and the older adults were willing to implement/receive this intervention. Cultural and political factors (renqing and perceived policy consideration) facilitated the elders' access to mental health services. Challenges included a lack of real therapy (in contrast to role-playing) demonstrated in the training and lack of a step-by-step manual based on different types of problems encountered. Other impediments to the successful implementation of the intervention included the time constraints of village doctors and the presence of other people when conducting the intervention.The present study has demonstrated that the intervention program is likely to be an acceptable geriatric depression intervention in rural China if several challenges are appropriately addressed.

The continual accumulation of power grid failure logs provides a valuable but rarely used source for data mining. Sequential analysis, aiming at exploiting the temporal evolution and exploring the future trend in power grid failures, is an increasingly promising alternative for predictive scheduling and decision-making. In this paper, a temporal Latent Dirichlet Allocation (TLDA) framework is proposed to proactively reduce the cardinality of the event categories and estimate the future failure distributions by automatically uncovering the hidden patterns. The aim was to model the failure sequence as a mixture of several failure patterns, each of which was characterized by an infinite mixture of failures with certain probabilities. This state space dependency was captured by a hierarchical Bayesian framework. The model was temporally extended by establishing the long-term dependency with new co-occurrence patterns. Evaluation of the high voltage circuit breakers (HVCBs) demonstrated that the TLDA model had higher fidelities of 51.13%, 73.86%, and 92.93% in the Top-1, Top-5, and Top-10 failure prediction tasks over the baselines, respectively. In addition to the quantitative results, we showed that the TLDA can be successfully used for extracting the time-varying failure patterns and capture the failure association with a cluster coalition method.

For partial discharge (PD) diagnostics in gas insulated switchgears (GISs) based on the ultra-high-frequency (UHF) method, it is essential to study the attenuation characteristics of UHF signals so as to improve the application of the UHF technique. Currently, the performance of UHF has not been adequately considered in most experimental research, while the constructive conclusions about the installation and position of UHF sensors are relatively rare. In this research, by using a previously-designed broadband sensor, the output signal is detected and analyzed experimentally in a 252 kV GIS with L-shaped structure and disconnecting switch. Since the relative position of the sensor and the defect is usually fixed by prior research, three circumferential angle positions of the defect in cross section are performed. The results are studied by time, statistics and frequency analyses. This identifies that the discontinuity conductor of DS will lead to a rise of both the peak to peak value (Vpp) and the transmission rate of the UHF signal. Then, the frequency analysis indicates that the reason for the distinction of signal amplitude and transmission rate is that the mode components of the PD signal are distinctively affected by the special structure of GIS. Finally, the optimal circumferential angle position of the UHF Sensor is given based on the comparison of transmission rates.

Contact erosion is one of the most crucial factors affecting the electrical service lifetime of high-voltage circuit breakers (HVCBs). On-line monitoring the contacts’ erosion degree is increasingly in demand for the sake of condition based maintenance to guarantee the functional operation of HVCBs. A spectroscopic monitoring system has been designed based upon a commercial 245 kV/40 kA S F 6 live tank circuit breaker with copper–tungsten (28 wt % and 72 wt %) arcing contacts at atmospheric S F 6 pressure. Three optical-fibre based sensors are used to capture the time-resolved spectra of arcs. A novel approach using chromatic methods to process the time-resolved spectral signal has been proposed. The processed chromatic parameters have been interpreted to show that the time variation of spectral emission from the contact material and quenching gas are closely correlated to the mass loss and surface degradation of the plug arcing contact. The feasibility of applying this method to online monitoring of contact erosion is indicated.

The ultra-high frequency (UHF) method is widely used in insulation condition assessment. However, UHF signal processing algorithms are complicated and the size of the result is large, which hinders extracting features and recognizing partial discharge (PD) patterns. This article investigated the chromatic methodology that is novel in PD detection. The principle of chromatic methodologies in color science are introduced. The chromatic processing represents UHF signals sparsely. The UHF signals obtained from PD experiments were processed using chromatic methodology and characterized by three parameters in chromatic space (H, L, and S representing dominant wavelength, signal strength, and saturation, respectively). The features of the UHF signals were studied hierarchically. The results showed that the chromatic parameters were consistent with conventional frequency domain parameters. The global chromatic parameters can be used to distinguish UHF signals acquired by different sensors, and they reveal the propagation properties of the UHF signal in the L-shaped gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). Finally, typical PD defect patterns had been recognized by using novel chromatic parameters in an actual GIS tank and good performance of recognition was achieved.

Low boron (B) seriously limits the growth of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), a high B demand species that is sensitive to low B conditions. Significant genotypic variations in response to B deficiency have been observed among B. napus cultivars. To reveal the genetic basis for B efficiency in B. napus, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the plant growth traits, B uptake traits and the B efficiency coefficient (BEC) were analyzed using a doubled haploid (DH) population derived from a cross between a B-efficient parent, Qingyou 10, and a B-inefficient parent, Westar 10. A high-density genetic map was constructed based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) assayed using Brassica 60 K Infinium BeadChip Array, simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs). The linkage map covered a total length of 2139.5 cM, with 19 linkage groups (LGs) and an average distance of 1.6 cM between adjacent markers. Based on hydroponic evaluation of six B efficiency traits measured in three separate repeated trials, a total of 52 QTLs were identified, accounting for 6.14-46.27% of the phenotypic variation. A major QTL for BEC, qBEC-A3a, was co-located on A3 with other QTLs for plant growth and B uptake traits under low B stress. Using a subset of substitution lines, qBEC-A3a was validated and narrowed down to the interval between CNU384 and BnGMS436. The results of this study provide a novel major locus located on A3 for B efficiency in B. napus that will be suitable for fine mapping and marker-assisted selection breeding for B efficiency in B. napus.

Drip irrigation is broadly extended in order to save water in the arid cotton production region of China. Biochar is thought to be a useful soil amendment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here, a field study was conducted to compare the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) under different irrigation methods (drip irrigation (D) and furrow irrigation (F)) and fertilization regimes (conventional fertilization (C) and conventional fertilization + biochar (B)) during the cotton growth season. The accumulated N2O emissions were significantly lower with FB, DC, and DB than with FC by 28.8%, 36.1%, and 37.6%, while accumulated CH4 uptake was 264.5%, 226.7%, and 154.2% higher with DC, DB, and FC than that with FB, respectively. Naturally, simultaneous interactions occurred among plants, herbivores, and soil biota, that is, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), nematodes, and fungal pathogens. These multiple interactions play fundamental roles in driving process, structure, and functioning of ecosystems. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis with 144 papers to investigate the interactions between AMF and plant biotic stressors and their effects on plant growth performance. We found that AMF enhanced plant tolerance to herbivores, nematodes, and fungal pathogens. We also found reciprocal inhibition between AMF and nematodes as well as fungal pathogens, but unidirectional inhibition for AMF on herbivores. Negative effects of AMF on biotic stressors of plants depended on herbivore feeding sites and actioning modes of fungal pathogens. More performance was reduced in root-feeding than in shoot-feeding herbivores and in rotting- than in wilt-fungal pathogens. However, no difference was found for AMF negative effects between migratory and sedentary nematodes. In return, nematodes and fungal pathogens generated more reduction of root colonization in Non-Glomeraceae than in Glomeraceae. Our results suggested that AMF positive effects on plants might be indirectly mediated by competitive inhibition with biotic stressors of plants. These positive and negative interactions make potential contributions to maintaining ecosystem stability and functioning.

To investigate the association between emphysema heterogeneity in spatial distribution, pulmonary function and disease severity.We ascertained a dataset of anonymized Computed Tomography (CT) examinations acquired on 565 participants in a COPD study. Subjects with chronic bronchitis (CB) and/or bronchodilator response were excluded resulting in 190 cases without COPD and 160 cases with COPD. Low attenuations areas (LAAs) (≤ 950 Hounsfield Unit (HU)) were identified and quantified at the level of individual lobes. Emphysema heterogeneity was defined in a manner that ranged in value from -100% to 100%. The association between emphysema heterogeneity and pulmonary function measures (e.g., FEV1% predicted, RV/TLC, and DLco% predicted) adjusted for age, sex, and smoking history (pack-years) was assessed using multiple linear regression analysis.The majority (128/160) of the subjects with COPD had a heterogeneity greater than zero. Visual attention mechanism is one of the important techniques in computer vision field, and it can increase the effectiveness of computer image information processing. Biogeography-Based Optimization (BBO) is a bioinspired algorithm for global optimization, searching for the global optimum mainly through two steps: migration and mutation. In this paper, a novel Predator-Prey Biogeography-Based Optimization (PPBBO) is utilized to solve the bio-inspired visual attention problem. In PPBBO method, BBO is combined with the mechanism of predatorprey, which can enhance the global convergence of the algorithm. The convergence property of the PPBBO is analyzed theoretically, and the detailed process is also given. Comparative experimental results with basic BBO, CBBO, CPPBBO, and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our presented PPBBO for adjusting combination of feature maps in visual attention.

Cellulose is an important component of cell wall, yet its location and function in pollen tubes remain speculative. In this paper, we studied the role of cellulose synthesis in pollen tube elongation in Pinus bungeana Zucc. by using the specific inhibitor, 2, 6-dichlorobenzonitrile (DCB). In the presence of DCB, the growth rate and morphology of pollen tubes were distinctly changed. The organization of cytoskeleton and vesicle trafficking were also disturbed. Ultrastructure of pollen tubes treated with DCB was characterized by the loose tube wall and damaged organelles. DCB treatment induced distinct changes in tube wall components. Fluorescence labeling results showed that callose, and acidic pectin accumulated in the tip regions, whereas there was less cellulose when treated with DCB. These results were confirmed by FTIR microspectroscopic analysis. In summary, our findings showed that inhibition of cellulose synthesis by DCB affected the organization of cytoskeleton and vesicle trafficking in pollen tubes, and induced changes in the tube wall chemical composition in a dose-dependent manner. These results confirm that cellulose is involved in the establishment of growth direction of pollen tubes, and plays important role in the cell wall construction during pollen tube development despite its lower quantity.

This paper proposed a novel bionic selective visual attention mechanism to quickly select regions that contain salient objects to reduce calculations. Firstly, lateral inhibition filtering, inspired by the limulus' ommateum, is applied to filter low-frequency noises. After the filtering operation, we use Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm based selective visual attention mechanism to obtain the interested object to carry through the following recognition operation. In order to eliminate the camera motion influence, this paper adopted ABC algorithm, a new optimization method inspired by swarm intelligence, to calculate the motion salience map to integrate with conventional visual attention. To prove the feasibility and effectiveness of our method, several experiments were conducted. First the filtering results of lateral inhibition filter were shown to illustrate its noise reducing effect, then we applied the ABC algorithm to obtain the motion features of the image sequence. The ABC algorithm is proved to be more robust and effective through the comparison between ABC algorithm and popular Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Except for the above results, we also compared the classic visual attention mechanism and our ABC algorithm based visual attention mechanism, and the experimental results of which further verified the effectiveness of our method.

BackgroundNerve terminal invasion by an axonal spike activates voltage-gated channels, triggering calcium entry, vesicle fusion, and release of neurotransmitter. Ion channels activated at the terminal shape the presynaptic spike and so regulate the magnitude and duration of calcium entry. Consequently characterization of the functional properties of ion channels at nerve terminals is crucial to understand the regulation of transmitter release. Direct recordings from small neocortical nerve terminals have revealed that external [Ca(2+)] ([Ca(2+)](o)) indirectly regulates a non-selective cation channel (NSCC) in neocortical nerve terminals via an unknown [Ca(2+)](o) sensor. Here, we identify the first component in a presynaptic calcium signaling pathway.Methodology/principal findingsBy combining genetic and pharmacological approaches with direct patch-clamp recordings from small acutely isolated neocortical nerve terminals we identify the extracellular calcium sensor. Our results show that the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR), a previously identified G-protein coupled receptor that is the mainstay in serum calcium homeostasis, is the extracellular calcium sensor in these acutely dissociated nerve terminals. The NSCC currents from reduced function mutant CaSR mice were less sensitive to changes in [Ca(2+)](o) than wild-type. Calindol, an allosteric CaSR agonist, reduced NSCC currents in direct terminal recordings in a dose-dependent and reversible manner. In contrast, glutamate and GABA did not affect the NSCC currents.Conclusions/significanceOur experiments identify CaSR as the first component in the [Ca(2+)](o) sensor-NSCC signaling pathway in neocortical terminals. Decreases in [Ca(2+)](o) will depress synaptic transmission because of the exquisite sensitivity of transmitter release to [Ca(2+)](o) following its entry via voltage-activated Ca(2+) channels. CaSR may detects such falls in [Ca(2+)](o) and increase action potential duration by increasing NSCC activity, thereby attenuating the impact of decreases in [Ca(2+)](o) on release probability. CaSR is positioned to detect the dynamic changes of [Ca(2+)](o) and provide presynaptic feedback that will alter brain excitability.

Natural killer T (NKT) cells are a subset of T lymphocytes with potent immunoregulatory properties. Recognition of self-antigens presented by CD1d molecules is an important route of NKT cell activation; however, the molecular identity of specific autoantigens that stimulate human NKT cells remains unclear. Here, we have analyzed human NKT cell recognition of CD1d cellular ligands. The most clearly antigenic species was lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC). Diacylated phosphatidylcholine and lyso-phosphoglycerols differing in the chemistry of the head group stimulated only weak responses from human NKT cells. However, lyso-sphingomyelin, which shares the phosphocholine head group of LPC, also activated NKT cells. Antigen-presenting cells pulsed with LPC were capable of stimulating increased cytokine responses by NKT cell clones and by freshly isolated peripheral blood lymphocytes. These results demonstrate that human NKT cells recognize cholinated lyso-phospholipids as antigens presented by CD1d. Since these lyso-phospholipids serve as lipid messengers in normal physiological processes and are present at elevated levels during inflammatory responses, these findings point to a novel link between NKT cells and cellular signaling pathways that are associated with human disease pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND:Previous studies have shown that plant mitochondrial movements are myosin-based along actin filaments, which undergo continuous turnover by the exchange of actin subunits from existing filaments. Although earlier studies revealed that actin filament dynamics are essential for many functions of the actin cytoskeleton, there are little data connecting actin dynamics and mitochondrial movements. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We addressed the role of actin filament dynamics in the control of mitochondrial movements by treating cells with various pharmaceuticals that affect actin filament assembly and disassembly. Confocal microscopy of Arabidopsis thaliana root hairs expressing GFP-FABD2 as an actin filament reporter showed that mitochondrial distribution was in agreement with the arrangement of actin filaments in root hairs at different developmental stages. Analyses of mitochondrial trajectories and instantaneous velocities immediately following pharmacological perturbation of the cytoskeleton using variable-angle evanescent wave microscopy and/or spinning disk confocal microscopy revealed that mitochondrial velocities were regulated by myosin activity and actin filament dynamics. Furthermore, simultaneous visualization of mitochondria and actin filaments suggested that mitochondrial positioning might involve depolymerization of actin filaments on the surface of mitochondria. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:Base on these results we propose a mechanism for the regulation of mitochondrial speed of movements, positioning, and direction of movements that combines the coordinated activity of myosin and the rate of actin turnover, together with microtubule dynamics, which directs the positioning of actin polymerization events.

Electron tomography (ET) is an important technique for studying the three-dimensional structures of the biological ultrastructure. Recently, ET has reached sub-nanometer resolution for investigating the native and conformational dynamics of macromolecular complexes by combining with the sub-tomogram averaging approach. Due to the limited sampling angles, ET reconstruction typically suffers from the ''missing wedge'' problem. Using a validation procedure, iterative compressed-sensing optimized nonuniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) reconstruction (ICON) demonstrates its power in restoring validated missing information for a low-signal-to-noise ratio biological ET dataset. However, the huge computational demand has become a bottleneck for the application of ICON. In this work, we implemented a parallel acceleration technology ICON-many integrated core (MIC) on Xeon Phi cards to address the huge computational demand of ICON. During this step, we parallelize the element-wise matrix operations and use the efficient summation of a matrix to reduce the cost of matrix computation. We also developed parallel versions of NUFFT on MIC to achieve a high acceleration of ICON by using more efficient fast Fourier transform (FFT) calculation. We then proposed a hybrid task allocation strategy (two-level load balancing) to improve the overall performance of ICON-MIC by making full use of the idle resources on Tianhe-2 supercomputer. Experimental results using two different datasets show that ICON-MIC has high accuracy in biological specimens under different noise levels and a significant acceleration, up to 13.3 x , compared with the CPU version. Electron tomography (ET) is an essential imaging technique for studying structures of large biological specimens. These structures are reconstructed from a set of projections obtained at different sample orientations by tilting the specimen. However, most of existing reconstruction methods are not appropriate when the data are extremely noisy and incomplete. A new iterative method has been proposed: adaptive simultaneous algebraic reconstruction with inter-iteration adaptive non-linear anisotropic diffusion (NAD) filter (FASART). We also adopted an adaptive parameter and discussed the step for the filter in this reconstruction method. Experimental results show that FASART can restrain the noise generated in the process of iterative reconstruction and still preserve the more details of the structure edges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
