The morphology of the stagnated plasma resulting from Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) is measured by imaging the self-emission x-rays coming from the multi-keV plasma. Equivalent diagnostic response can be generated by integrated radiation-magnetohydrodynamic (rad-MHD) simulations from programs such as HYDRA and GORGON. There have been only limited quantitative ways to compare the image morphology, that is the texture, of simulations and experiments. We have developed a metric of image morphology based on the Mallat Scattering Transformation (MST), a transformation that has proved to be effective at distinguishing textures, sounds, and written characters. This metric is designed, demonstrated, and refined by classifying ensembles (i.e., classes) of synthetic stagnation images, and by regressing an ensemble of synthetic stagnation images to the morphology (i.e., model) parameters used to generate the synthetic images. We use this metric to quantitatively compare simulations to experimental images, experimental images to each other, and to estimate the morphological parameters of the experimental images with uncertainty. This coordinate space has proved very adept at doing a sophisticated relative background subtraction in the MST space. We analyze faces generated by points in an arbitrary convex set and their relative algebraic interiors, which are nonempty as we shall prove. We show that by intersecting a convex set with a sublevel or level set of a generalized affine functional, the dimension of the face generated by a point may decrease by at most one. We apply the results to the set of quantum states on a separable Hilbert space. Among others, we show that every state having finite expected values of any two (not necessarily bounded) positive operators admits a decomposition into pure states with the same expected values. This paper presents the concepts behind the BrainScales (BSS) accelerated analog neuromorphic computing architecture. It describes the second-generation BrainScales-2 (BSS-2) version and its most recent in-silico realization, the HICANN-X Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), as it has been developed as part of the neuromorphic computing activities within the European Human Brain Project (HBP). While the first generation is implemented in an 180nm process, the second generation uses 65nm technology. This allows the integration of a digital plasticity processing unit, a highly-parallel micro processor specially built for the computational needs of learning in an accelerated analog neuromorphic systems. The presented architecture is based upon a continuous-time, analog, physical model implementation of neurons and synapses, resembling an analog neuromorphic accelerator attached to build-in digital compute cores. While the analog part emulates the spike-based dynamics of the neural network in continuous-time, the latter simulates biological processes happening on a slower time-scale, like structural and parameter changes. Compared to biological time-scales, the emulation is highly accelerated, i.e. all time-constants are several orders of magnitude smaller than in biology. Programmable ion channel emulation and inter-compartmental conductances allow the modeling of nonlinear dendrites, back-propagating action-potentials as well as NMDA and Calcium plateau potentials. To extend the usability of the analog accelerator, it also supports vector-matrix multiplication. Thereby, BSS-2 supports inference of deep convolutional networks as well as local-learning with complex ensembles of spiking neurons within the same substrate.

The most abundant terrestrial lavas, mid-ocean ridge and ocean island basalt (MORB and OIB), are commonly considered to be derived from a depleted MORB-mantle component and more specific, variably enriched mantle plume sources. However, findings of oceanic lavas and mafic cumulates issued from melts, enriched in chlorine and having a radiogenic Sr ratio, can be attributed to an interaction between the asthenosphere-derived melts and lithospheric peridotite variably hydrated due to penetration of hydrothermal water down to and below Moho level. To constrain mechanisms and rates responsible for the interaction, we report results of experiments of reaction between serpentinite and tholeiitic basaltic melt. Results show that the reaction proceeds via a multi-stage mechanism: (i) transformation of serpentinite into Cr-rich spinel-bearing harzburgite containing pore fluid, (ii) partial melting and dissolution of the harzburgite assemblage with formation of interstitial hydrous melts, and (iii) final assimilation of the Cr-rich spinel-bearing harzburgite/dunite and formation of hybrid basaltic melts with high MgO and elevated Cr and Ni contents. Assimilation of serpentinite by basaltic melt may occur under elevated melt/rock ratios and may lead to chromitite formation. Our experiments provide evidence that MORB and high-Mg-Cr orthopyroxene-rich cumulates depleted in incompatible elements can be produced from common mid-ocean ridge basaltic melts modified by reaction with hydrated lithospheric peridotite. We measure the thermoelectric response of Corbino structures in the quantum Hall effect regime and compare it with a theoretical analysis. The measured thermoelectric voltages are qualitatively and quantitatively simulated based upon the independent measurement of the conductivity indicating that they originate predominantly from the electron diffusion. Electron-phonon interaction does not lead to a phonon-drag contribution in contrast to earlier Hall-bar experiments. This implies a description of the Onsager coefficients on the basis of a single transmission function, from which both thermovoltage and conductivity can be predicted with a single fitting parameter. Current theories suggest that on Earth and, possibly, on other terrestrial planets early in their history, the first continental crust may has been produced by direct melting of hydrated peridotite. However, the conditions, mechanisms and necessary ingredients of such production remain elusive. To fill this gap, we have conducted experiments of serpentinite melting in the presence of variable proportions of basaltic melt, at typical conditions of the shallow lithosphere and asthenosphere. These experiments revealed formation of silica-rich liquids, which are similar to tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite magmas (TTG) identified in modern terrestrial oceanic mantle settings. Our results suggest a new mechanism of aqueous fluid-assisted partial melting of peridotite that may have operated on the early Earth and Mars just after the solidification of an ultramafic-mafic magma ocean, leading to the formation of the first embryos of continental crust. We present synthetic dust polarization maps of simulated molecular clouds (MCs) with the goal to systematically explore the origin of the relative orientation of the magnetic field ($\bf{B}$) with respect to the MC sub-structures identified in density ($n$; 3D) and column density ($N$; 2D). The polarization maps are generated with the radiative transfer code POLARIS, including self-consistently calculated efficiencies for radiative torque alignment. The MCs are formed in two sets of 3D MHD simulations: in (i) colliding flows (CF), and (ii) the SILCC-Zoom simulations. In 3D, for the CF simulations with an initial field strength below $\sim$5 $\mu$G, $\bf{B}$ is oriented parallel or randomly with respect to the $n$-structures. For CF runs with stronger initial fields and all SILCC-Zoom simulations, which have an initial field strength of 3 $\mu$G, a flip from parallel to perpendicular orientation occurs at high densities of $n_\text{trans}$ $\simeq$ 10$^2$ - 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$. We suggest that this flip happens if the MC's mass-to-flux ratio, $\mu$, is close to or below the critical value of 1. This corresponds to a field strength around 3 - 5 $\mu$G. In 2D, we use the Projected Rayleigh Statistics (PRS) to study the orientation of $\bf{B}$. If present, the flip in orientation occurs at $N_\text{trans}$ $\simeq$ 10$^{21 - 21.5}$ cm$^{-2}$, similar to the observed transition value from sub- to supercritical magnetic fields in the ISM. However, projection effects can reduce the power of the PRS method: Depending on the MC or LOS, the projected maps of the SILCC-Zoom simulations do not always show the flip, although expected from the 3D morphology. Such projection effects can explain the variety of recently observed field configurations, in particular within a single MC. Three-dimensional models of astrospheres have recently become of interest. However, comparisons between these models and observations are non-trivial because of the two-dimensional nature of observations. By projecting selected physical values of three-dimensional models of astrospheres onto the surface of a sphere that is centred on a virtual all-sky observer, these models can be compared to observational data in different observables: the column density, bremsstrahlung flux, rotation measure, H$\alpha$ flux, and synchrotron or cyclotron flux. Projections were calculated by rotating and moving the astrosphere model to the desired position and orientation and by then computing the value of a given patch on the sphere by a modified line-of-sight integration. Contributions to the selected observable made by all model cells that are connected to the patch by the line of sight in question were taken into account. When the model produces a bow shock, a distinct parabolic structure produced by the outer astrosheath can be seen in every observable of the projection, the exact shape depending on the orientations of the line of sight and the stellar motion. Of all four examined astrosphere models, only that of $\lambda$ Cephei shows fluxes that are higher than current observational thresholds. This is due to the strong stellar wind and interstellar inflow of the $\lambda$ Cephei model.

The interpretation of recent observations of bow shocks around O-stars and the creation of corresponding models require a detailed understanding of the associated (magneto-)hydrodynamic structures. We base our study on three-dimensional numerical magneto-)hydrodynamical models, which are analyzed using the dynamically relevant parameters, in particular, the (magneto)sonic Mach numbers. The analytic Rankine-Hugoniot relation for HD and MHD are compared with those obtained by the numerical model. In that context we also show that the only distance which can be approximately determined is that of the termination shock, if it is a hydrodynamical shock. For MHD shocks the stagnation point does not, in general, lie on the inflow line, which is the line parallel to the inflow vector and passing through the star. Thus an estimate via the Bernoulli equation as in the HD case is, in general, not possible. We also show that in O-star astrospheres, distinct regions exist in which the fast, slow, Alfv\'enic, and sonic Mach numbers become lower than one, implying sub-slow magnetosonic as well as sub-fast and sub-sonic flows. We show that for any energy observable every extreme point of the set of quantum states with bounded energy is a pure state. This allows us to write every state with bounded energy in terms of a continuous convex combination of pure states of bounded energy. Furthermore, we prove that any quantum state with finite energy can be represented as a continuous convex combination of pure states with the same energy. We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey's method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ultracold neutrons (UCN). Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time reversal invariance. The salient features of this experiment were the use of a Hg-199 co-magnetometer and an array of optically pumped cesium vapor magnetometers to cancel and correct for magnetic field changes. The statistical analysis was performed on blinded datasets by two separate groups while the estimation of systematic effects profited from an unprecedented knowledge of the magnetic field. Psychological bias towards, or away from, a prior measurement or a theory prediction is an intrinsic threat to any data analysis. While various methods can be used to avoid the bias, e.g. actively not looking at the result, only data blinding is a traceable and thus trustworthy method to circumvent the bias and to convince a public audience that there is not even an accidental psychological bias. Data blinding is nowadays a standard practice in particle physics, but it is particularly difficult for experiments searching for the neutron electric dipole moment, as several cross measurements, in particular of the magnetic field, create a self-consistent network into which it is hard to inject a fake signal. We present an algorithm that modifies the data without influencing the experiment. Results of an automated analysis of the data are used to change the recorded spin state of a few neutrons of each measurement cycle. The flexible algorithm is applied twice to the data, to provide different data to various analysis teams. This gives us the option to sequentially apply various blinding offsets for separate analysis steps with independent teams. The subtle modification of the data allows us to modify the algorithm and to produce a re-blinded data set without revealing the blinding secret. The method was designed for the 2015/2016 measurement campaign of the nEDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. However, it can be re-used with minor modification for the follow-up experiment n2EDM, and may be suitable for comparable efforts.

We present a general method to extend results on Hilbert space operators to the Banach space setting by representing certain sets of Banach space operators $\Gamma$ on a Hilbert space. Our assumption on $\Gamma$ is expressed in terms of $\alpha$-boundedness for a Euclidean structure $\alpha$ on the underlying Banach space $X$. This notion is originally motivated by $\mathcal{R}$- or $\gamma$-boundedness of sets of operators, but, for example, any operator ideal from the Euclidean space $\ell^2_n$ to $X$ defines such a structure. Therefore, our method is quite flexible. Conversely we show that $\Gamma$ has to be $\alpha$-bounded for some Euclidean structure $\alpha$ to be representable on a Hilbert space. By choosing the Euclidean structure $\alpha$ accordingly, we get a unified and more general approach to classical factorization and extension theorems. Furthermore we use these Euclidean structures to build vector-valued function spaces and define an interpolation method based on these spaces, which has formulations modelled after both the real and the complex interpolation method. Using our representation theorem we prove a transference principle for sectorial operators on a Banach space, enabling us to extend Hilbert space results for sectorial operators to the Banach space setting. We define generalizations of the classical square function estimates in $L^p$-spaces and establish, via the $H^\infty$-calculus, a version of Littlewood-Paley theory and associated spaces of fractional smoothness for a rather large class of sectorial operators. The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME) is a network of time-synchronized, geographically separated, optically pumped atomic magnetometers that is being used to search for correlated transient signals heralding exotic physics. GNOME is sensitive to exotic couplings of atomic spins to certain classes of dark matter candidates, such as axions. This work presents a data analysis procedure to search for axion dark matter in the form of topological defects: specifically, walls separating domains of discrete degenerate vacua in the axion field. An axion domain wall crossing the Earth creates a distinctive signal pattern in the network that can be distinguished from random noise. The reliability of the analysis procedure and the sensitivity of the GNOME to domain-wall crossings is studied using simulated data.

An array of sixteen laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. The originality of the array lies in its compact design, in which a single near-infrared diode laser drives all magnetometers that are located in a high-vacuum chamber, with a selection of the sensors mounted on a high-voltage electrode. We describe details of the Cs sensors' construction and modes of operation, emphasizing the accuracy and sensitivity of the magnetic field readout. We present two applications of the magnetometer array directly beneficial to the nEDM experiment: (i) the implementation of a strategy to correct for the drift of the vertical magnetic field gradient and (ii) a procedure to homogenize the magnetic field. The first reduces the uncertainty of the new nEDM result. The second enables transverse neutron spin relaxation times exceeding 1500 s, improving the statistical sensitivity of the nEDM experiment by about 35% and effectively increasing the rate of nEDM data taking by a factor of 1.8.
