Abstract

Objectives To investigate the molecular basis of L-type calcium channel in adult and aged canine. Methods Two groups of mongrels were investigated: seven adult and ten-year-old canines. The effective refractory period (ERP) of HRA, coronary sinus proximal (CSp), coronary sinus distal (CSd), left atrial appendage (LAA), right atrial appendage (RAA), left superior pulmonary vein (LSPV), left inferior pulmonary vein (LIPV), right superior pulmonary vein (RSPV) and right inferior pulmonary vein (RIPV) were measured in sequence at an atrial pacing of S1S2. Abstract

The price gap between West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent crude oil markets has been completely changed in the past several years. The price of WTI was always a little larger than that of Brent for a long time. However, the price of WTI has been surpassed by that of Brent since 2011. The new market circumstances and volatility of oil price require a comprehensive re-estimation of risk. Therefore, this study aims to explore an integrated approach to assess the price risk in the two crude oil markets through the value at risk (VaR) model. The VaR is estimated by the extreme value theory (EVT) and GARCH model on the basis of generalized error distribution (GED). The results show that EVT is a powerful approach to capture the risk in the oil markets. On the contrary, the traditional variance–covariance (VC) and Monte Carlo (MC) approaches tend to overestimate risk when the confidence level is 95%, but underestimate risk at the confidence level of 99%. The VaR of WTI returns is larger than that of Brent returns at identical confidence levels. Moreover, the GED-GARCH model can estimate the downside dynamic VaR accurately for WTI and Brent oil returns. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on cell growth and poly(γ-glutamic acid) (γ -PGA) synthesis were studied by adding hydrogen peroxide to a medium of Bacillus subtilis NX-2. After optimizing the addition concentration and time of H2O2, a maximum concentration of 33.9 g/L γ-PGA was obtained by adding 100 µM H2O2 to the medium after 24 H. This concentration was 20.6% higher than that of the control. The addition of diphenyleneiodonium chloride (ROS inhibitor) can interdict the effect of H2O2-induced ROS. Transcriptional levels of the cofactors and relevant genes were also determined under ROS stress to illustrate the possible metabolic mechanism contributing to the improve γ-PGA production. The transcriptional levels of genes belonging to the tricarboxylic acid cycle and electron transfer chain system were significantly increased by ROS, which decreased the NADH/NAD+ ratio and increased the ATP levels, thereby providing more reducing power and energy for γ -PGA biosynthesis. The enhanced γ-PGA synthetic genes also directly promoted the formation of γ-PGA. This study was the first to use the ROS control strategy for γ-PGA fermentation and provided valuable information on the possible mechanism by which ROS regulated γ -PGA biosynthesis in B. subtilis NX-2. Abstract

BACKGROUND Poly-γ-glutamic acid ( PGA), a naturally occurring homopolymer, has gained increased interest worldwide because of its extensive applications. In this study, sugarcane bagasse chemically modified with poly-ϵ-L-lysine ( PL) was used in an aerobic plant fibrous-bed bioreactor ( APFB) to enhance PGA fermentation by Bacillus subtilis NX-2. RESULTS 5 g L−1 of PL was optimized to modify native sugarcane bagasse, and 45.7 ± 0.6 g L−1 PGA was obtained with PL-bagasse immobilized cells in batch fermentation, with a productivity of 1.08 ± 0.02 g L−1 h−1. These results were 1.23 and 1.4 times higher than those with unmodified sugarcane bagasse. The effect of dissolved oxygen ( DO) on PGA fermentation was further investigated, and suitable conditions were 45% DO with the PGA concentration 55.4 ± 0.4 g L−1. In 10 batches of repeated-batch fermentation, PGA production significantly increased and the average PGA yield was maintained at 90.6 ± 0.5 g L−1 in the three later batches and was increased by 8.7% compared with that in the first batch. CONCLUSION The improved APFB system was proved to be a green, economic, and effective bioprocess for PGA fermentation, and this system could also provide a suitable microenvironment for B. subtilis NX-2 to induce its evolution. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
