Higher education institutions in the United States (U.S.) recruit international students as part of their internationalization strategies. The overall number of international students enrolled in American universities and colleges between 2017 and 2018 increased by 1.5% compared to the previous year, totaling over 1 million international students (Institute of International Education 2018). Of this total, 382,983 are international graduate students. International graduate students are good resources for the internationalization and economy of higher education institutions in the U.S. (Urban and Palmer, 2014) and, despite the reduction in the number of visas approved and job prospects, their numbers continue to grow (Almurideef 2016; Killick 2015). These students come from different countries, have different cultural backgrounds and needs, and face different challenges that student affairs professionals at host institutions must address to integrate them into campus (Harper and Hurtado, 2007; Lee and Rice 2007). Moreover, the needs and challenges of international students differ depending on their level of studies, undergraduate vs. graduate (Rai 2002). While student affairs professionals are often the first contacts for all international students, and they play a key role in the integration and development of international graduate students on campus (Brandenburg 2016), most higher education institutions and their student affairs units today are not yet prepared to serve international graduate students (Arokiasamy 2011; Burdzinski 2014; Castellanos et al., 2007; Di Maria 2012; Moswela and Mukhopadhyay 2011; Yakaboski and Perozzi 2018). The purpose of this study is to understand the perspectives of student affairs professional about their role in integrating international graduate students into campus and the policies, services, programs, and other elements they consider most helpful in integrating these students.

Writing Support for International Graduate Students: Enhancing Transition and Success by Shyam Sharma is a valuable addition to the Routledge Research in Writing Studies series. In actuality, this volume’s audience is far wider than its title suggests. It includes thoughtful, holistic discussions of the needs of international graduate students to inform practitioners at every institutional level. Researchers in many fields, including composition, second language acquisition, educational policy, and student affairs, will also benefit from the book’s thorough literature review. Sharma’s primary argument is that strong leadership is essential to address the challenges faced by international graduate students.

The aim of this study is to determine the satisfaction levels of the students getting educated about sports at the higher education level regarding their faculties within the scope of total quality management. The sample was selected from the students of Physical Education and Sports Teaching, Sports Management, Coaching Education and Recreation Departments of Eskişehir Technical University by using simple random sampling methodology. A screening model was used within the scope of the study, which included a total of n=150 students, of which n=51 (34%) were female and n=99 (66%) were male. In the study where data was collected using the survey technique, Student Satisfaction Questionnaire prepared by the Education Research and Development Department of the Turkish Ministry of National Education was used after being adapted to the higher education institutions. The data obtained through the questionnaire were transferred to a computer and analysed with SPSS 20.0 package program. Percentage/frequency analysis technique was used for data analysis. According to the results of the research, it was determined that the students could benefit from the sports hall and university facilities at a sufficient level and they could easily meet the instructors when they needed. At the same time, the students stated that efforts were made to solve the problems they conveyed to their instructors and that the instructors were reliable people. In addition, it was determined that their opinions were not taken when making decisions about the students in the faculty. As a result of the research, it was determined that the three topics that the students of the sports sciences faculty were most satisfied with in the faculties they studied in the context of total quality management were education and training activities, accessibility and communication and security, respectively. In addition, the lowest level of satisfaction of students within the scope of total quality management is participation in decisions and student affairs. Additionally, the satisfaction levels of sports science students in the context of total quality management were found to be at a moderate level.

Racial battle fatigue is the exhaustion that People of Color feel from repeated exposure to racism, as well as its negative impact on their emotional, physiological, and psychological health and wellbeing. Although People of Color have engaged in resistance and resilience in the midst of racism, it still takes a toll on their bodies. In this article, we focus specifically on Black student affairs educators, given the racial battle fatigue they navigate working in a helping profession where they are often expected to prioritize students’ needs above their own. Using a narrative methodological approach, we centered the stories of 35 Black student affairs educators across various institutions to identify the strategies they used to practice self-care in the midst of racial battle fatigue, including unplugging from the people and places that caused them harm, building community with other Black educators, caring for their bodies, finding safe spaces, and using counseling. We offer implications for practice for Black student affairs educators and those working to support them in navigating racial battle fatigue.

Despite a focus on the holistic formation of students, nonreligious narratives shape student affairs theories and professional practice guidelines. Recognizing this problem, Christian scholar-practitioners have authored a growing body of literature about what might be distinct about Christian student affairs. This article provides an analysis of the theological foundations used in this literature. Our aim was to locate the unique theological building blocks for a more comprehensive Christian theology of student affairs. Our analysis found that placing and practicing the profession of student affairs within the Christian narrative produced noteworthy distinctives in every aspect of student affairs.

The growing concern about employment outcomes adds to existing pressures on students to make career decisions early in the college experience. This study was designed to investigate the alignment of student career readiness obtained through quality programming targeting student success learning outcomes as designed by student affairs practitioners at Texas public institutions to those employers surveyed by The Hart Association for the American Association of College and Universities. This study revealed that there is an alignment between student affairs learning outcomes and employer’s expectations for career readiness. The results of this study show a need for common terminology across constituent groups making the student more comfortable in using their co-curricular activities as transferable skills during the interview process. An ideal co-curricular experience that will merge the development of such common langue is an innovative First Year Experience Course as presented in this article.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to assess records management components, such as record scheduled, records appraisal, destroyed/disposed, retained, training of staff on the management of the student affairs records (SARs), provided access, the challenges associated with efficient management of SARs and strategies for effective management of SARs, to determine the extent the Student Affairs Department (SAD) complies with the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) records management policy.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses qualitative methodology of a triangulation of data collection and this included interviews, document analysis and observation.FindingsThe literature review, as well as the interview, revealed that findings on the UMP records management policy are multi-layered. A number of participants mentioned lack of records centre, records retention and appraisal of records, records management training and managing access to information as a challenge to the management of SARs.Research limitations/implicationsThe research was only limited to the UMP, Student Affairs Division, with a population of 15 staff members even though the findings can be applied to all the universities in South Africa.Practical implicationsSAD has a unique contribution to make to ensure that records created within their division are managed in terms of the UMP records management policy by ensuring that components such as records storage retention and appraisal of records management training and managing access to information are adhered to.Social implicationsFailure to comply with the UMP records management policy by the Student Affairs Division will contribute to the loss of institutional memories, non-compliance with legislations such as Promotion of Access to Information Act 2000, National Archives and Records Services Act 46 of 1996 and the Protection of Personal Information Act No 4. Of 2013.Originality/valueThe research appears to be the first of its kind, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, to assess SARs at the UMP, South Africa.

The study aims to analyze and explain the effectiveness and efficiency of implementing total quality management principles in private educational institutions. The context of the study narrowed down the areas of comparisons to tutorial conducts, student affairs and infrastructure. A detailed analysis of the existing total quality management currently in place at the selected university was duly comprehended. This resulted in finding the flaws/weaknesses in the system of universities in the kingdom of Bahrain generally. Findings through a survey and interview sessions indicated that teachers were not consulted for any changes in curriculum which leads to a lack of co-operation between management and teachers. Another problem in regards to the total quality management implementation was that students perceived the university as not being concerned with maintenance of the premises. Moreover, student affairs/services section was seriously lacking sport facilities, limited training sessions, poor equipment maintenance.

This research examines the relationships between first-year college students’ attendance at campus-sponsored extracurricular events and grade point average, persistence from fall to spring, and retention to the second year. Students’ attendance at various campus life events over the course of an academic year was tracked by scanning students’ identification cards. Hierarchical regression modeling revealed that first years attending events within a specific category of campus life programming called signature events had significantly higher cumulative grade point averages and better odds of persisting and retaining. The findings from this study add to the body of research on student involvement and engagement, with a specific focus on campus life activities.

Undoubtedly, managing student discipline is one of the concerns of higher education institutions in the Philippines nowadays. However, despite the so many strategies to alleviate serious and not so serious offenses in EAC-Cavite, there have never been any established guidelines to evaluate student discipline occurrences and intervention as the basis for continual improvement. This study evaluates the major types of student discipline and analyzes its kind of offense incurred by students for Academic Year 2018-2019 from the 14 schools in EAC-Cavite which are categorically divided into five (5) clusters. This study uses the mixed methods of research using the data gathered daily by the Discipline Officers. The data were summarized using frequency and percentage or according to the number of offenses recorded each month and the recorded incidents per cluster. The Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was also conducted among 20 student offenders who voluntarily provide reasons of such occurrences. The students analyzed and gave their possible solutions to improve their habits. Although this study is a nonexperimental, this implies that this evaluation documents the college-wide intervention and the role of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) to improve their reporting technique on student discipline. Findings show that there were fewer occurrences per cluster after the intervention; however, for continual improvement purposes, this study recommends a continuous evaluation of the OSA’s disciplinary procedures, intervention guidelines, and reporting strategies to enhance student services at EAC-Cavite.

This paper calls for the massive redesign of intercollegiate athletics departments in the United States (U.S.) in light of their widespread and fundamental failure to serve a bona fide student affairs mission, and their prevalent practice of placing the college’s commercial motives above the financial and educational needs of studentathletes. The first section of this paper discusses the general purpose and functions of student affairs departments within the broader context of higher education. The next two sections of this paper then explore the shortcomings of U.S. intercollegiate athletics departments to conform to these general purposes and functions. Finally, this paper proposes a bifurcated solution to reform U.S. intercollegiate athletics, which enables a small number of U.S. colleges to shift toward a true commercial sports business model, with the overwhelming majority of U.S. colleges, by contrast, adopting a true, non-commercial sports model.

At the level of reality, student management studies are an important part in building and developing the quality of Islamic education in the era of industrial revolution 4. 0. Management in the field of student affairs in essence is still considered to be not optimal, especially for Islamic education institutions, as an effort to give birth to the intended quality, can be started from student management, by planning learning activities, carrying out continuous guidance for students in developing their abilities. Student management can be started from planning, student admission, grouping, recording attendance of students, fostering student discipline, regulating student transfer, graduation and ending with the implementation of the program. In addition, student management is part of a variety of other managerial activities, therefore student management can run well if it considers several aspects, namely; a) the role of the teacher is expected to be responsive in determining various policies in the field of student affairs, b) student services must be based on needs, taking into account the characteristics of students c) student management is expected to create orderly and pleasant learning situations so that students’ personalities grow and develop, d) effectiveness student management requires funding and adequate facilities. Thus various management activities basically aim to achieve a goal, namely the creation of quality education in accordance with the wishes of today’s society. Keywords: management, student affairs, education quality in the era of industrial Revlution 4.0
