- Abstract
We present Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph emission-line spectra of the central regions of the spiral galaxies NGC 1300 and 2748. From the derived kinematics of the nuclear gas we have found evidence for central supermassive black holes in both galaxies. The estimated masses of the black holes in NGC 1300 and 2748 are (6.6+6.3−3.2) × 107 and (4.4+3.5−3.6) × 107 M⊙, respectively (both at the 95 per cent confidence level). These two black hole mass estimates contribute to the poorly sampled low-mass end of the nuclear black hole mass spectrum

Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) samples observed during reionization (z ≳ 6) with the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 are reaching sizes sufficient to characterize their clustering properties. Using a combined catalog from the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field and CANDELS surveys, containing N = 743 LBG candidates at z ⩾ 6.5 at a mean redshift of , we detect a clear clustering signal in the angular correlation function (ACF) at ≳ 4σ, corresponding to a real-space correlation length cMpc. The derived galaxy bias is that of dark matter halos of at z = 7.2, and highlights that galaxies below the current detection limit (M
AB ∼ –17.7) are expected in lower-mass halos (M ∼ 108 -1010.5 ). We compute the ACF of LBGs at z ∼ 3.8 – z ∼ 5.9 in the same surveys. A trend of increasing bias is found from (b ∼ 3.0) to (b ∼ 8.6), broadly consistent with galaxies at fixed luminosity being hosted in dark matter halos of similar mass at 4 ≲ z ≲ 6, followed by a slight rise in halo masses at z ≳ 7 (∼2σ confidence). Separating the data at the median luminosity of the sample (MUV = –19.4) shows higher clustering at for bright galaxies (cMpc, ) compared to faint galaxies (cMpc, ) implying a constant mass-to-light ratio . A similar trend is present in the sample with larger uncertainty. Finally, our bias measurements allow us to investigate the fraction of dark matter halos hosting UV-bright galaxies (the duty cycle, εDC ). We report the discovery of 33 Lyman-break galaxy candidates at z ∼ 8 detected in Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) imaging as part of the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) pure-parallel survey. The ongoing BoRG survey currently has the largest area (274 arcmin
2 ) with Y098 (or Y105 ), J125 , and H160 band coverage needed to search for z ∼ 8 galaxies, about three times the current CANDELS area, and slightly larger than what will be the final CANDELS wide component with Y105 data (required to select z ∼ 8 sources). Our sample of 33 relatively bright Y098 -dropout galaxies have J125 -band magnitudes between 25.5 and 27.4 mag. This is the largest sample of bright (J125 ≲ 27.4) z ∼ 8 galaxy candidates presented to date. Combining our data set with the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field data set, we constrain the rest-frame ultraviolet galaxy luminosity function at z ∼ 8 over the widest dynamic range currently available. The combined data sets are well fitted by a Schechter function, i.e., , without evidence for an excess of sources at the bright end. At 68% confidence, for h = 0.7 we derive ϕ* = (4.3+3.5 –2.1 ) × 10–4 Mpc–3 , M* = –20.26+0.29 –0.34 , and a very steep faint-end slope α = –1.98+0.23 –0.22 . While the best-fit parameters still have a strong degeneracy, especially between ϕ* and M* , our improved coverage at the bright end has reduced the uncertainty of the faint-end power-law slope at z ∼ 8 compared to the best previous determination at ±0.4. With a future expansion of the BoRG survey, combined with planned ultradeep WFC3/IR observations, it will be possible to further reduce this uncertainty and clearly demonstrate the steepening of the faint-end slope compared to measurements at lower redshift, thereby confirming the key role played by small galaxies in the reionization of the universe. This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are observed to be more compact, on average, at $z \gtrsim 2$ than at $z\simeq 0$, at fixed stellar mass. Recent observational works suggest that such size evolution could reflect the similar evolution of the host dark matter halo density as a function of the time of galaxy quenching. We explore this hypothesis by studying the distribution of halo central velocity dispersion ($\sigma_0$) and half-mass radius ($r_{\rm h}$) as functions of halo mass $M$ and redshift $z$, in a cosmological $\Lambda$-CDM $N$-body simulation. In the range $0\lesssim z\lesssim 2.5$, we find $\sigma_0\propto M^{0.31-0.37}$ and $r_{\rm h}\propto M^{0.28-0.32}$, close to the values expected for homologous virialized systems. At fixed $M$ in the range $10^{11} M_\odot \lesssim M\lesssim 5.5 \times 10^{14} M_\odot$ we find $\sigma_0\propto(1+z)^{0.35}$ and $r_{\rm h}\propto(1+z)^{-0.7}$. We show that such evolution of the halo scaling laws is driven by individual haloes growing in mass following the evolutionary tracks $\sigma_0\propto M^{0.2}$ and $r_{\rm h}\propto M^{0.6}$, consistent with simple dissipationless merging models in which the encounter orbital energy is accounted for. We compare the $N$-body data with ETGs observed at $0\lesssim z\lesssim3$ by populating the haloes with a stellar component under simple but justified assumptions: the resulting galaxies evolve consistently with the observed ETGs up to $z \simeq 2$, but the model has difficulty reproducing the fast evolution observed at $z\gtrsim 2$. We conclude that a substantial fraction of the size evolution of ETGs can be ascribed to a systematic dependence on redshift of the dark matter haloes structural properties., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, 1 table. We report on a complete sample of 7 luminous early-type galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) with spectroscopic redshifts between 1.39 and 2.47 and to K1.4. Low-resolution spectra of these objects have been extracted from the HST+ACS grism data taken over the UDF by the GRAPES project. Redshift for the 7 galaxies have been identified based on the UV feature at rest frame 2640=1.7 appears to be roughly a factor of 2--3 smaller than that of their local counterparts, further supporting the notion that such massive and old galaxies are already ubiquitous at early cosmic times. Much smaller effective radii are derived for some of the objects compared to local massive ellipticals, which may be due to morphological K corrections, evolution, or the presence of a central point-like source. Nuclear activity is indeed present in a subset of the galaxies, as revealed by them being hard X-ray sources, hinting to AGN activity having played a role in discontinuing star formation., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, ApJ in press
