Seaweed, traditionally part of the daily diet of Asian countries, has become a common dish in Western countries. In Brazil, although contributing to lesser amounts, seaweed consumption has been incorporated into the population eating habits. It is well established that seaweed contains (1) several biologically active components and (2) the ability to accumulate minerals and trace elements, both of which are essential and potentially toxic. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of essential, trace and toxic elements present in edible seaweeds sold in São Paulo city market, considering the species, origin, and potential impact on the health of the consumers. Data demonstrated that the elemental distribution is characteristic of the species and due to low quantity consumption seaweed may be considered a reliable source for iodine alone. We aimed to evaluate performance, body development, metabolism, and expression of genes related to skeletal muscle hypertrophy in uncastrated male dairy kids fed with different levels of milk replacer (MR) during the preweaning period. Sixty newborn male kids, not castrated, from Saanen and Swiss Alpine breeds, with an average BW of 3.834 ± 0.612 kg, were distributed in a randomized block design. Breeds were the block factor in the model (random effect). Kids were allocated into 2 nutrition plans (n = 30 kids/treatment) categorized as follows: low nutritional plan (LNP; 1 L of MR/kid per day) or high nutritional plan (HNP; 2 L of MR/kid per day). All kids were harvested at 45 d of life. The majority of nitrogen balance variables were affected by the nutritional plan (P < 0.050). Morphometric measures and BCS (2.99 for LNP vs. 3.28 for HNP) were affected by nutritional plan (P < 0.050), except hip height, thoracic depth, and hip width. The nutritional plan affected the body components (P < 0.050), except esophagus and trachea. Animal performance and carcass traits were influenced by nutritional plan (P < 0.050), except carcass dressing (48.56% on average). Nutritional plan affected (P < 0.050) some blood profile variables as the total cholesterol (141.35 vs. 113.25 mg/dL), triglycerides (60.53 vs. 89.05 mg/dL), LDL (79.76 vs. 33.66 g/mL), and IGF-1 (17.77 vs. 38.55 ng/mL) for LNP and HNP, respectively. Hypertrophy was greater in HNP than LNP animals (P < 0.050), being represented by the proportion of sarcoplasm (39.76% vs. 31.99%). LNP had a greater mTOR abundance than HNP (P = 0.045), but AMPK was not affected by the nutritional plan. Our findings show that a higher milk replacer allowance enhances animal performance, body development, metabolic parameters, and cellular hypertrophy in preweaning dairy kids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper introduces a design and analysis framework for a multivariable gradient-based stochastic extremum-seeking control system that considers delays. The study addresses multi-input systems with time delays in both input and output channels. The introduced new predictor feedback mechanism utilizes stochastic sinusoidal perturbation-based estimates of the Hessian's matrix in order to compensate the delay effects in the real-time optimizer. The incorporation of this feedback into the closed-loop system ensures exponential stability for the average dynamics and convergence to a small neighborhood around the unknown extremum point. The derived results are rigorously established through the application of backstepping transformation and stochastic averaging techniques in infinite dimensions. The study aimed to evaluate digoxin, an RORγt inhibitor, in Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (MRONJ) in male rats treated with zoledronic acid (ZA). Forty male Wistar rats were divided into a negative control group (0.1 mL/kg saline), a positive control group (ZA, 0.20 mg/kg), and three test groups treated with ZA and digoxin at 1 (DG1), 2 (DG2), or 4 (DG4) mg/kg. These groups received treatment three times weekly. ZA was administered intravenously on days 0, 7, and 14, followed by extraction of the left lower first molar on day 42, a final ZA dose on day 49, and euthanasia on day 70. Analyses included radiographic, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical evaluation of the mandibles, western blotting of gingiva, and mechanical tests on femurs. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA/Bonferroni tests (P <.05). Digoxin reduced radiolucency of MRONJ (P <.001), inflammatory cells, empty osteocyte lacunae (P <.001), apoptotic osteoclasts (P <.001), and Caspase-3-positive osteocytes (P =.021). ZA increased immunoreactivity for most markers except c-Fos, while digoxin reduced interleukin 17, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-2, FOXP3, c-Jun, NFκB (P <.001), TGF-β (P =.009), RANKL (P =.035), and OPG (P =.034). Digoxin also reversed RORγt expression (P <.001), increased diarrhea scores (P =.028), renal and cardiac indexes (P <.001), and enhanced femur mechanical properties (P <.013). The weeds of the species Rottboellia cochinchinensis (Lour.) Clayton (camalote grass) are highly aggressive in bush competition for sugarcane crops, and these species are increasing their infestations in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, generating impacts on the development of sugarcane plantations and reducing productivity and longevity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the herbicide imazapic in pre-emergence control of the species R. cochinchinensis when applied under conditions with and without sugarcane straw and in different simulations of rainfall. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design. A 2 × 2 × 2 triple factorial design was used, consisting of 2 doses of the herbicide imazapic (105 and 147 g ai ha−1), 2 amounts of straw (0 and 10 t ha−1) and 2 rainfall simulations (10 and 30 mm). With 4 replicates and 4 controls, this factorial being isolated for two soil types (clayey and sandy) and in two germination flows (F1 and F2). The rainfall factor always resulted in higher control performances with the smallest simulated volume of 10 mm, and the amount of straw factor influenced the effectiveness of the control, both in sandy and clayey soils. The highest dose (147 g ai ha−1) showed better control efficacy in clayey soils. The study highlights the adaptability and potential of Eucalyptus pellita for forestry applications in Brazil. It utilized a randomized block design with linear plots of five plants across five replications, establishing an experimental trial with 175 progenies from several provenances in May 2019. The trial was conducted in Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo State, Brazil, which has an Aw (tropical wet-dry climate) climate according to Köppen´s classification and followed the commercial forestry practices of the region. Three years after planting, survival, height (H) and diameter at breast height (DBH) were measured, with the main annual increment calculated using a shape factor of 0.5. The survival rate reached 95%, with an average tree height of 12.6 m, DBH of 10 cm, and a volume mean annual increment of 34 m3ha− 1y− 1. We observed a provenance effect, with higher breeding values in improved material compared to wild (unimproved) material. Thinning strategies were initiated by plotting additive genetic effects for the DBH trait of families and provenance, resulting in the identification of four groups empirically divided according to the curve's inflection point. Thinning intensity of 70 to 80% of the trees was found effective in maintaining both genetic gain and a good effective population size, regardless of whether selection within families was considered. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of considering several factors, including provenance effects and selection strategies, for sustainable forestry practices. Provenance effects play a significant role in tree breeding programs. However, even within poor-performing provenance, it is possible to select trees with high breeding values. Objective: To evaluate the influence of MMR complex protein immunoexpression on disease-free survival in oropharyngeal SCC treated non-surgically. Materials and methods: 85 cases of oropharyngeal SCC diagnosed and treated at the Ceará Cancer Institute were surveyed, from which clinical-pathological data and paraffin blocks of incisional biopsies were retrieved for immunohistochemical reaction for MSH2, MSH6, PMS2, MLH1 and p16. Disease-free survival was calculated and Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman/Dunn tests, chi-square and Fisher's exact, Log-Rank Mantel Cox and Cox regression were performed. Results: In p16- tumors, loss of MSH2 expression was associated with shorter disease-free survival (p = 0.035) and mean MSH6 expression was significantly higher than MSH2 (p = 0.001). Loss of MSH2 expression in p16 + tumors was associated with longer disease-free survival compared to p16- tumors. Imbalance in the MSH6/MSH2 ratio in p16 + tumors was associated with longer survival compared to p16- tumors. MLH1/PMS2 imbalance was significantly higher in p16 + with recurrence (p = 0.003). Low MSH2 immunoexpression increased the risk of relapse by 9.10 times (CI95% 1.99 to 83.06). Conclusion: Microsatellite instability in oropharyngeal SCC is demonstrated by the association between loss of protein expression and its heterodimer imbalance with disease-free survival. It was demonstrated that the imbalance of the MMR complex can consequently lead to resistance to treatment and a decrease in disease-free survival in p16 + oropharyngeal SCC tumors. Saliva has emerged as a promising diagnostic fluid for viral infections, enabling the direct analysis of viral genetic material and the detection of infection markers such as proteins, metabolites, microRNAs, and immunoglobulins. This comprehensive review aimed to explore the use of saliva as a diagnostic tool for viral infections, emphasizing its advantages and limitations. Saliva stands out due to its simplicity and safety in collection, along with the convenience of self-collection without the need for healthcare supervision, while potentially being comparable to urine and blood in terms of effectiveness. Herein, we highlighted the significant potential of saliva in assessing viral loads and diagnosing viral infections, such as herpesviruses, HPV, PyV, TTV, SARS-CoV-2, and MPXV. The detection of viral shedding in saliva underscores its utility in early diagnosis, the monitoring of infection progression, and evaluating treatment responses. The non-invasive nature of saliva collection makes it an appealing alternative to more invasive methods, promoting better patient compliance and facilitating large-scale screening and surveillance. As such, we further highlight current evidence on the use of saliva as a prognostic tool. Although a significant amount of data is already available, further investigations are warranted to more comprehensively assess the added benefit from the utilization of salivary biomarkers in the clinics. Salivary biomarkers show great promise for the early detection and prevention of viral infection complications, potentially improving disease management and control at the population level. Integrating these non-invasive tools into routine clinical practice could enhance personalized healthcare strategies and patient outcomes. Future studies should focus on establishing standardization protocols, validating the accuracy of salivary diagnostics, and expanding clinical research to enhance the diagnostic and monitoring capabilities of salivary biomarkers. Objective: To evaluate the influence of MMR proteins on clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). Method: The solid pattern of ACC showed lower expression for MSH2 (p = 0.039). Significant imbalance in MSH2/MSH6 immunostaining was observed in all histological patterns (p < 0.001), and imbalance in PMS2/MLH1 immunostaining was observed in the cribriform pattern (p = 0.011). The presence of capsule was associated with high expression of MSH6 (p = 0.019), MLH1 (p = 0.045) and PMS2 (p = 0.009). The absence of cribriform pattern (p = 0.002) and capsule pattern (p = 0.025), as well as low expression for MSH6 (p = 0.006) and PMS2 (p = 0.037) were associated with lower overall survival. In multivariate analysis, loss of MSH2 (p = 0.039) and MLH1 (p = 0.017) were significantly associated with worse overall survival. Results: Twenty‐four ACC were clinical‐pathologically evaluated and we perform immunohistochemistry for MSH2, MSH6, PMS2 and MLH1. Percentage counting of positive cells was performed in 10 fields of each histological pattern (cribriform, tubular and solid) and the averages of the 30 fields were considered for evaluation with other clinical‐pathological variables (Kruskal‐Wallis/Dunn, Friedman/Dunn, chi‐square, Log‐Rank Mantel‐Cox tests and Cox regression; SPSS v20.0, p < 0.05). This study evaluates the possible agricultural application of calcium carbonate derived from niobium extraction. This carbonate is stored in dams, and it is enriched with radionuclides from 232Th series, which imposes restrictions on its use. Activity concentration evaluation in soil was performed before the tillage of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and the soil–plant transfer factor was determined. Results showed the dilution factor applied to the carbonate in the soil causes insignificant increments in soil activity concentration. In cultivated lettuce, high activity concentrations of 228Ra and 226Ra were found independently when using either the control or carbonate amended soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of stationary phase (STAT) and long-term survival phase (LTS) Salmonella Enteritidis ATCC 13076 to atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) in phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.0) and on shell eggs. Salmonella Enteritidis was cultured in tryptic soy broth supplemented with 0.6% (w/v) yeast extract (35°C) for 20 h (STAT) and 21 days (LTS). Cell morphology was determined by light microscopy. The PBS and shell eggs were inoculated with STAT or LTS cells to obtain ~7.0 log10 CFU/mL or egg. The ACP was applied at 45 kV (PBS) and 60 kV (shell eggs) for 1-4 min and 1-5 min, respectively. Pathogen survivors were enumerated on thin agar layer (TAL) medium and on xylose lysine tergitol-4 (XLT-4) agar after 48 h of incubation (35°C). For survivors on shell eggs, R2 and mean square error values were obtained using Log-linear with Tail and Weibull models. The STAT cells were predominantly rod-shaped whereas LTS cells were coccoid. In PBS, reductions (log10 CFU/mL) of STAT cells were 1.0, 0.95, 1.45, and 1.44 after exposure to ACP for 1, 2, 3, and 4 min, respectively. In contrast, reductions in LTS cells were significantly lower (p< 0.05) at 0.04 (1 min), 0.06 (2 min) 0.01 (3 min), and 0.11 (4 min). A similar pattern was observed for shell eggs whereby LTS cells exhibited much higher tolerance to ACP than STAT cells (p < 0.05). The Log-linear with Tail model produced a better fit of the survival data for STAT cells; times to achieve a 4- and 5- log reduction were 5.29 and 5.78 min, respectively. Sub-lethal injury occurred in both STAT and LTS survivors; however, differences were not significant (P > 0.05). Additionally, there were no observed differences in shell strength and yolk color between ACP-treated and control eggs. Based on these results, LTS cells of S. Enteritidis are more tolerant to ACP than STAT cells and should be considered when developing process validation protocols involving application of ACP to inactivate Salmonella on shell eggs. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of Chloramine T in reducing gingivitis in hospitalized patients, in addition to providing an alternative to the use of Chlorhexidine. Materials and methods: A randomized, triple-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial was performed with 45 volunteers presenting with gingivitis, using the Löe Gingival Index (LGI). Patients were randomly allocated into one of three groups: (G1): Chloramine T 0.2%; (G2): Chlorhexidine 0.12% and (G3): distilled water. Results: After five days, the control group (G3) remained without relevant differences in relation to the first pre-treatment assessment, while the groups tested with chlorhexidine and chloramine T showed improvement in the LGI (p < 0.05). After ten days, G3 maintained the results of the previous assessments, G1 repeated the five-day assessment and G2 obtained a statistically significant difference, with a better result in relation to the previous assessment (p < 0.05). After fifteen days, G3 showed no differences in relation to the other assessments, G1 had a statistically significant difference, showing better performance in relation to the previous assessment and G2 continued the gradual improvement it had been showing in the LGI (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Chloramine T and Chlorhexidine present similar results in the treatment of gingivitis, when evaluated by probing by the LGI, and Chloramine T can be used effectively, without causing the adverse effects inherent to prolonged use of chlorhexidine. Clinical relevance: Importance of oral hygiene for patients admitted to hospitals with the use of adjuvant substances that do not present adverse effects such as chlorhexidine, which is considered the gold standard, seeking to provide better clinical protocols. This study presents experimental investigations and numerical simulations of the microwave (MW) dielectric and evaluation of the electrical properties in the radiofrequency region (RF). The ceramic matrix Li2LaNbTiO7 (LLNT) is obtained through the solid‐state reaction method. The synthesis of LLNT is confirmed using the X‐ray diffraction technique. In the complex impedance spectroscopy study, permittivity (ε′r) and loss tangent (tanδ) values are analyzed at room temperature. The study of the conductivity spectrum at different temperatures demonstrates that the conduction process is thermally activated, presenting a value of 0.65 eV for the activation energy. Numerical simulations are employed to evaluate the behavior of the LLNT matrix as dielectric resonator antennas (DRA), whereas this ceramics demonstrated a reflection coefficient of less than −10 dB at the resonant frequency, achieving a gain of 3.71 dBi, a bandwidth of 144 MHz and a radiation efficiency greater than 97%. This article proposed to explain the relationship between theory and practice in the Alternation Pedagogy of Family Centers for Alternation Training (CEFFA). The construction was theoretically supported by the authors Gamboa (1995), Vázquez (2007), Gimonet (2007), Begnami (2019), Ribeiro (2010), and Caldart (2009). The systematization was possible based on bibliographical research, which directed the construction of the path of conceptions of the theory-practice relationship, from the ideological and pragmatic dichotomies to the dialectical unity of praxis and the Pedagogy of Alternation of CEFFA. The research allowed us to understand that theory, practice, and praxis are forms of human behavior in the face of historical and contradictory reality, as well as affirming the relevance of the relationship between theory and practice in the theoretical systematization of the Pedagogy of Alternation of CEFFA, enhanced, above all, by the pillars ends and means, through a diversity of pedagogical instruments that give vivacity to the alternation in a dialectical way. Yellow Sigatoka, caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora musae, represents one of the most challenging diseases in bananas, which is aggravated due to the genetic variability of this pathogen. The main objective of this study was to characterize the infection process of P. musae in two banana cultivars with different levels of resistance and to quantify the expression of resistance genes. Inoculated and non-inoculated leaf samples of the two cultivars, Yangambi km 5—resistant and Grande Naine—susceptible, were investigated by light microscopy, histochemistry, scanning electron microscopy, and RT-qPCR. The cultivar Grande Naine showed early signs of P. musae infection, including the production of lipophilic substances and phenolic compounds, while the cultivar Yangambi km 5 was not affected. In the Grande Naine cultivar, the protein kinase gene was upregulated, while in the Yangambi km 5, it was repressed. The WAK2 gene was initially upregulated in both cultivars; however, in Grande Naine, it was subsequently repressed, while in Yangambi km 5, it remained downregulated. These findings have the potential to contribute to more effective management strategies in the control of yellow Sigatoka and the development of banana varieties resistant to yellow Sigatoka. Cutaneous-skeletal hypophosphatemia syndrome (CSHS) is a rare disorder characterized by the presence of melanocytic nevi, dysplastic cortical bony lesions, and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)-mediated hypophosphatemic rickets. Herein, we describe the diagnosis of an 8-year-old girl presenting with short stature, reduced lower limb mobility, and abnormal gait due to muscle weakness and constant pain in the legs. Biochemical parameters demonstrated hypophosphatemia, hyperphosphaturia, slight increase in parathyroid hormone (PTH), high levels of alkaline phosphatase, and elevated FGF23. Burosumab improved phosphate-wasting, serum phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, and PTH, followed by a significant mineralization in vertebral bodies evidenced by radiographic assessment. Our report shows a long-term follow-up of CSHS with a notable improvement promoted by an anti-FGF23 therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dizziness and vertigo are common complaints in both emergency and outpatient settings, requiring careful evaluation to determine appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Differentiating between peripheral and central causes of dizziness is crucial for effective management. Peripheral causes, such as vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and Ménière's disease, are contrasted with central causes such as stroke, demyelinating diseases, and posterior fossa tumors. Diagnostic approaches include assessing nystagmus patterns, the vestibulo-ocular reflex, and the HINTS Plus test. Vestibular disorders are classified as acute, episodic, or chronic based on duration and symptom presentation. Imaging plays a significant role in identifying central causes when clinical findings are inconclusive. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical evaluation and diagnostic methods for dizziness and vertigo, with emphasis on distinguishing peripheral from central etiologies. Human population growth constantly requires an increase in the production of food and products from the timber industry. To meet this demand, agriculture and planted forests are advancing over natural areas. In view of this, it is necessary to know the effects of land use for different purposes (grain production, pastures, planted forests, fruit production and among other uses) on the genetic diversity of populations of native species. This knowledge can assist in land use planning as well as in the development of conservation strategies for native species. In this study, we evaluated the effect of land use for agriculture (mainly for cereal production) and planted forests on the genetic diversity of Baccharis crispa Spreng. a herb native to South America. To achieve our goals, we compared population genetic data obtained with three molecular markers (microsatellites, inter-simple sequence repeat and isoenzymes) with data on land use for agriculture and planted forests from 15 different locations. Our results showed that regardless of the molecular marker used, the greater the use of land for agriculture and planted forests, the lower was the genetic diversity of B. crispa populations. Baccharis crispa is a semi-perennial species that needs at least one year to reach its reproductive period, which is prevented in agricultural areas due to the land being turned over or dissected with herbicides every 6 months. In the studied regions, the planted forests are of eucalypt and/or pine, which besides being species with a high production of allelopathic substances, produce strong shading and B. crispa is a species that inhabits open grassland that needs a high incidence of sunlight for development. Coffea indirect somatic embryogenesis (ISE) has been established from callogenesis heading towards somatic embryo regeneration, evidencing intra- and interspecific similarities and differences between diploid (Coffea canephora and Coffea eugenioides) and allotetraploid (Coffea arabica). ISE is influenced by endogenous and exogenous aspects, but few data have been reported about the genetic and physiological causes. Seeking to understand the Coffea ISE responses, we aimed to: induce ISE in diploid and allotetraploid, quantify the endogenous levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and determine the gene copy number of aux/iaa33 and yuc4 involved in auxin biosynthesis, and of wox4 related with ISE pathway. Unlike previous studies, C. eugenioides and C. arabica showed the same friable callus mean number, and higher mean number than C. canephora. Nevertheless, C. canephora friable calli had higher IAA level at 60th than other Coffea. IAA level of the C. canephora friable calli reduced at 90th, becoming equal to C. eugenioides and C. arabica even the diploid Coffea exhibiting one copy and allotetraploid two copies of the aux/iaa33, yuc4 and wox4. As in other studies, C. arabica exhibited a higher somatic embryo mean number than diploid Coffea. Since the ISE was established in the same conditions, our data reinforce the endogenous IAA role in Coffea ISE, and that the aux/iaa33, yuc4 and wox4 copy number did not affect IAA levels. Therefore, other genes, genotype and hormones should be further investigated. Next-generation sequencing detected viral RNA from both DENV2 and DENV4 serotypes, which were identified as vaccine-derived strains using specific primers. This study aimed to assess the efficiency of the use of α-pinene and essential oils of Gaultheria procumbens, Juniperus communis, Protium heptaphyllum, and Protium pallidum in treating corn seeds (Zea mays) under storage conditions for the management of Sitophilus zeamais. Contact toxicity, fumigation, repellency, persistence, and residual effects of the targeted essential oil and phytocompound on germination were performed. G. procumbens oil, high in methyl salicylate (96%), was the most toxic in contact tests, with an LC50 of 26.83 µL/20 g. P. heptaphyllum oil, containing 40.1% limonene, was the second most toxic with an LC50 of 45.78 μL/20 g. When test separately, α-pinene was more toxic than J. communis oil, which has 67% α-pinene. P. pallidum oil, with 31.17% o-cimene, also showed toxicity. In fumigation tests, the toxicity order was G. procumbens ≥ P. heptaphyllum > α-pinene > J. communis > P. pallidum. All products were repellent. G. procumbens had the longest persistence (71 days), while J. communis and α-pinene had shorter persistence. J. communis oil and α-pinene did not affect corn seed germination or vigor. The findings are crucial for managing S. zeamais in stored maize and determining the appropriate use of natural insecticides without affecting their ability to germinate and grow.
