Abstract

We present SWS full-scan observations of three objects that are thought to be in a stage of evolution between the youngest, embedded, Herbig Ae/Be stars and Beta Pictoris, a young main-sequence star with a circumstellar disk. The 8-12μm spectra of all three stars cannot be understood in terms of purely amorphous silicates, but require the presence of crystalline silicates in different amounts. Around two objects both oxygen-rich and carbon-rich dust particles are present: the spectrum of HD 100546 displays the full set of UIR features; in the spectrum of HD 142527 both the 3.29 and 3.42μm emission features are observed, as well as a strong 3.51μm feature. The spectrum of HD 100546 is extremely rich in silicate features in the spectral range from 20 to 45μm; some of these features strongly suggest the presence of appreciable amounts of crystalline silicates.

Abstract

The paper describes profile broadening and peak wavelength variation of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) measured for 46 lines of sight, probably caused by the physical properties of intervening clouds. The full width at half-maximum of four studied DIBs (5780, 5797, 6196 and 6614 Å) demonstrates strong variability, sometimes doubling the widths of the features. Despite the high magnitude of the effect, our current analysis is restricted to the strongest DIBs because the weaker ones require a much higher signal-to-noise ratio. The profile broadening in the studied DIBs moves the profile's centres towards longer wavelengths, probably due to the excitation of higher levels of the P branch of the unknown molecular carrier. Moreover, DIBs are broader in clouds with abundantly populated vibrationally excited states of hydrogen molecules; that is, the broadening of DIBs correlates with the rotational temperature estimated on the H2 ν = 2 vibrational level. However, objects that demonstrate extremely broadened profiles of DIBs are scarce. The extreme peculiarity of the DIB profiles was detected in Herschel 36. 211. Imaging low-mass planets within the habitable zone of α Centauri.

Abstract

Giant exoplanets on wide orbits have been directly imaged around young stars. If the thermal background in the mid-infrared can be mitigated, then exoplanets with lower masses can also be imaged. Here we present a ground-based mid-infrared observing approach that enables imaging low-mass temperate exoplanets around nearby stars, and in particular within the closest stellar system, α Centauri. Based on 75-80% of the best quality images from 100 h of cumulative observations, we demonstrate sensitivity to warm sub-Neptune-sized planets throughout much of the habitable zone of α Centauri A. This is an order of magnitude more sensitive than state-of-the-art exoplanet imaging mass detection limits. We also discuss a possible exoplanet or exozodiacal disk detection around α Centauri A. However, an instrumental artifact of unknown origin cannot be ruled out. These results demonstrate the feasibility of imaging rocky habitable-zone exoplanets with current and upcoming telescopes.
