We present a new numerical code for spherical hydrodynamics in general relativity. The code can handle gravitational collapse to a neutron star or to a black hole without the appearance of singularities. Moreover, the variables and equations in the code are very similar to those appearing in traditional Lagrangian supernova codes. Any such existing code can thus be easily adapted to treat collapse where the final fate is uncertain and may be either a neutron star or a black hole. The code is based on the formulation of Hernandez & Misner, in which retarded time is used as coordinate. This prevents the computational grid from penetrating inside any black hole that may form. We present the equations and a complete finite difference scheme for the adiabatic evolution of a fluid that obeys a gamma-law equation of state. We summarize the results of several testbed calculations performed to check our code. We also give the transformation of the analytic Oppenheimer-Snyder solution for homogeneous dust collapse to our coordinate system.

We employ an approximate treatment of dissipative hydrodynamics in three dimensions to study the coalescence of binary neutron stars driven by the emission of gravitational waves. The stars are modeled as compressible ellipsoids obeying a polytropic equation of state; all internal fluid velocities are assumed to be linear functions of the coordinates. The hydrodynamics equations then reduce to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations for the evolution of the principal axes of the ellipsoids, the internal velocity parameters, and the binary orbital parameters. Gravitational radiation reaction and viscous dissipation are both incorporated. We set up exact initial binary equilibrium configurations and follow the transition from the quasi-static, secular decay of the orbit at large separation to the rapid dynamical evolution of the configurations just prior to contact. A hydrodynamical instability resulting from tidal interactions significantly accelerates the coalescence at small separation, leading to appreciable radial infall velocity and tidal lag angles near contact. This behavior is reflected in the gravitational waveforms and may be observable by gravitational wave detectors under construction. In cases where the neutron stars have spins which are not aligned with the orbital angular momentum, the spin-induced quadrupole moment can lead to precession of the orbital plane and therefore modulation of the gravitational wave amplitude even at large orbital radius. However, the amplitude of the modulation is small for typical neutron star binaries with spins much smaller than the orbital angular momentum.

We study the secular evolution and gravitational wave signature of a newly formed, rapidly rotating neutron star. The neutron star may arise from core collapse in a massive star or from the accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf. After a brief dynamical phase, the nascent neutron star settles into an axisymmetric, secularly unstable state. Gravitational radiation drives the star to a nonaxisymmetric, stationary equilibrium configuration via the bar-mode instability. The emitted quasi-periodic gravitational waves have a unique signature: the wave frequency sweeps downward from a few hundred Hertz to zero, while the wave amplitude increase from zero to a maximum and then decays back to zero. Such a wave signal could detected by broadband gravitational wave interferometers currently being constructed. We also characterize two other types of gravitational wave signals that could arise in principle from a rapidly rotating, secularly unstable neutron star: a high-frequency (f greater than or approximately = 1000 Hz) wave which increases the pattern-speed of the star, and a wave that actually increases the angular momentum of the star.

We present a new numerical study of the equilibrium and stability properties of close binary systems. We use the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique both to construct accurate equilibrium configurations in three dimensions and to follow their hydrodynamic evolution. We adopt a simple polytropic equation of state p = K(sub rho)(exp gamma) with gamma = 5/3 and K = constant within each star, applicable to low-mass degenerate dwarfs as well as low-mass main-sequence stars. For degenerate configurations, we set the two polytropic constants equal, K = K prime, independent of the mass ratio. For main-sequence stars, we adjust K and K prime so as to obtain a simple mass-radius relation of the form R/R prime = M/M prime, where R prime and M prime are the radius and mass of the secondary. Along a sequence of binary equilibrium configurations for two identical stars, we demonstrate the existence of both secular and dynamical instabilities, confirming directly the results of recent analytic work. We use the SPH method to calculate the nonlinear development of the dynamical instability and to determine the final fate of the system. We find that the two stars merge together into a single, rapidly rotating object in just a few orbital periods. Equilibrium sequences are also constructed for systems containing two nonidentical stars. These sequences terminate at a Roche limit, which we can determine very accurately using SPH. For two low-mass main-sequence stars with mass ratio q approximately less than 0.4 we find that the (synchronized) Roche limit configuration is secularly unstable. We discuss the implications of our results for the evolution of double white-dwarf systems and W Ursae Majoris binaries.

We performed a series of three-dimensional hydrodynamic calculations of binary coalescence using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The initial conditions are exact polytropic equilibrium configurations on the verge of dynamical instability. We consider synchronized equilbria only and concentrate on stiff equations of state, with adiabatic Gamma greater than 5/3. We assume that the polytropic constants (K identically equal to P/(rho(exp Gamma)) are the same for both components. These conditions apply well to models of neutron star binaries. Accordingly, we discuss our results in the context of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project, and we calculate the emission of gravitational radiation in the quadruple approximation. The fully nonlinear development of the instability is followed using SPH until a new equilibrium configuration is reached by the system. We find that the properties of this final configuration depend sensitively on both the compressibility and mass ratio. An axisymmetric merged configuration is always produced when the adiabatic exponent Gamma approximately less than 2.3. As a consequence, the emission of gravitational radiation shuts off abruptly right after the onset of dynamical instability. In contrast, triaxial merged configurations are obtained when Gamma approximately greater than 2.3, and the system continues to emit gravitational waves after the final coalescence. Systems with mass ratios q not equal to 1 typically become dynamically unstable before the onset of mass transfer. Stable mass transfer from one neutron star to another in a close binary is therefore probably ruled out. For a mass ratio q approximately less than 0.5, however, dynamical mass transfer can temporarily retard the coalescence by causing a rapid reexpansion of the binary into a new, slightly eccentric but dynamically stable orbit. The maximum amplitude h(sub max) and peak luminosity L(sub max) of the gravitational waves emitted during the final coalescence are nearly independent of Gamma, but depend sensitively on the mass ratio q. The approximate scalings we find are h(sub max) varies as q(exp 2) and L(sub max) varies as q(exp 6) for q close to unity.

We construct equilibrium sequences of rotating neutron stars in general relativity. We compare results for 14 nuclear matter equations of state. We determine a number of important physical parameters for such stars, including the maximum mass and maximum spin rate. The stability of the configurations to quasi-radial perturbations is assessed. We employ a numerical scheme particularly well suited to handle rapid rotation and large departures from spherical symmetry. We provide an extensive tabulation of models for future reference. Two classes of evolutionary sequences of fixed baryon rest mass and entropy are explored: normal sequences, which behave very much like Newtonian sequences, and supramassive sequences, which exist for neutron stars solely because of general relativistic effects. Adiabatic dissipation of energy and angular momentum causes a star to evolve in quasi-stationary fashion along an evolutionary sequence. Supramassive sequences have masses exceeding the maximum mass of a nonrotating neutron star. A supramassive star evolves toward eventual catastrophic collapse to a black hole. Prior to collapse, the star actually spins up as it loses angular momentum, an effect that may provide an observable precursor to gravitational collapse to a black hole.

We present a new analytic study of the equilibrium and stability properties of close binary systems containing polytropic components. Our method is based on the use of ellipsoidal trial functions in an energy variational principle. We consider both synchronized and nonsynchronized systems, constructing the compressible generalizations of the classical Darwin and Darwin-Riemann configurations. Our method can be applied to a wide variety of binary models where the stellar masses, radii, spins, entropies, and polytropic indices are all allowed to vary over wide ranges and independently for each component. We find that both secular and dynamical instabilities can develop before a Roche limit or contact is reached along a sequence of models with decreasing binary separation. High incompressibility always makes a given binary system more susceptible to these instabilities, but the dependence on the mass ratio is more complicated. As simple applications, we construct models of double degenerate systems and of low-mass main-sequence star binaries. We also discuss the orbital evoltuion of close binary systems under the combined influence of fluid viscosity and secular angular momentum losses from processes like gravitational radiation. We show that the existence of global fluid instabilities can have a profound effect on the terminal evolution of coalescing binaries. The validity of our analytic solutions is examined by means of detailed comparisons with the results of recent numerical fluid calculations in three dimensions.

We study the importance of hydrodynamic effects on the evolution of coalescing binary neutron stars. Using an approximate energy functional constructed from equilibrium solutions for polytropic binary configuration, we incorporate hydrodynamic effects into the calculation of the orbital decay driven by gravitational wave emission. In particular, we follow the transition between the quasi-static, secular decay of the orbit at large separation and the rapid dynamical evolution of confirgurations approaching contact. We show that a purely Newtonian hydrodynamic instability can significantly accelerate the coalescence at small separation. Such an instability occurs in all close binary configurations containing sufficiently incompressible stars. Calculations are performed for various neutron star masses, radii, and spins. The influence of the stiffness of the equation of state is also explored by varying the effective polytopic index. Typically, we find that the radial infall velocity just prior to contact is about 10% of the tangential orbital velocity. Once the stability limit is reached, the final evolution only takes another orbit. Post-Newtonian effects can move the stability limit to a larger binary separation, and may induce an even larger radial velocity. We also consider the possibiltiy of mass transfer form one neutron star to the other. We show that stable mass transfer is unlikely except when the mass of one of the components is very small (M is less than or approximately 0.4 solar mass) and the viscosity is high enough to maintain corotation. Otherwise, either the two stars come into contact or the dynamical instability sets in before a Roche limit can be reached.

The instability of a neutron star at the minimum mass is investigated using a hydrodynamical model to follow the evolution of the unstable star. A detailed analysis of the linear stability of the equilibrium configurations near the minimum mass is performed by solving the radial eigenvalue problem for the fundamental mode. The minimum mass configuration M(mmc) of 0.196 solar mass is found to be stable to small perturbations. Stability to radial perturbations is lost only at a lower critical mass of 0.16 solar mass, corresponding to about 0.8 M(mmc). It is shown that a simple dynamical model constructed using a 3-polytrope equation of state for hot dense matter reproduces the key dynamical features of the instability in the explosion phase.

The results of Chandrasekhar (1969) are generalized to polytropes, using a formalism based on ellipsoidal energy variational principle to construct approximate stellar equilibrium solutions and study their stability. After reviewing the energy variational method and describing the approach, several equivalent stability conditions are established and secular vs. dynamical instabilities are discussed. Then, the equilibrium structure equations are derived for isolated, rotating polytropes, and axisymmetric configurations (compressible Maclaurin spheroids) are considered. Particular attention is given to triaxial configurations, either in a state of uniform rotation (generalizing the classical Jacobi ellipsoids) or with internal fluid motions of uniform vorticity (the compressible analogues of Riemann-S ellipsoids) and to the stability of these single star configurations. The compressible generalizations of the Roche and Roche-Riemann problems for a polytrope in orbit about a point-mass companion are solved, and the generalized Darwin problem for two identical polytropes in a binary is considered.

Smooth-particle hydrodynamics is used to investigate collisions and close encounters between two massive main-sequence stars. Approximate scaling relations and fitting formulas are given for the amount of mass loss and for the critical impact parameters for capture or merging. The more massive stars, which have smaller ratios of specific binding energy to the square of escape velocity, are more easily disrupted in collisions. As the relative velocity increases, the orbital energy of the colliding stars can only be dissipated by shock heating, and the critical capture radius decreases much faster than predicted by linear theory. The average fractional mass loss per collision in a cluster is found not to depend sensitively on the stellar velocity dispersion.

The meaning of hydrodynamic instability of close binary systems is clarified, and the resulting large (but finite) value of the radial infall velocity near the end of the coalescence is estimated. Emphasis is placed on the case where the orbital decay is driven by gravitational radiation. A simple calculation of the orbital decay is presented for a simple generic model of a close binary.

The detection of orbital perturbation effects in the PSR1257+12 timing data would provide irrefutable confirmation that planets are indeed orbiting the pulsar. Here we give an overview of how perturbation effects are expected to affect the orbital elements of the two planets over the next few years. In particular, we give a simple calculation of resonant perturbations, including the nonlinear effects which could be important if sin i less than about 0.1. We also present a new analysis of the effects of close encounters between the two planets and we discuss their detectability.

The hydrodynamics of the final merging of two neutron stars and the corresponding gravitational wave emission is studied in detail. Various test calculations are presented, including the compressible Roche and Darwin problems and the head-on collision of two polytropes. A complete coalescence calculation is presented for the simplest case of two identical neutron stars, represented by Gamma = 2 polytropes, in a circular orbit, with their spins aligned and synchronized with the orbital rotation.

It has recently been shown that a rapidly rotating Newtonian star can spin up by radiating angular momentum. Extremely fast pulsars losing energy and angular momentum by magnetic dipole radiation or gravitational radiation may exhibit this behavior. Here, we show that this phenomenon is more widespread for rapidly rotating stars in general relativity. We construct and tabulate polytropic sequences of fully relativistic rotating stars of constant rest mass and entropy. We find that the range of adiabatic indices allowing spin-up extends somewhat above 4/3 because of the nonlinear effects of relativistic gravity. In addition, there is a new class of 'supramassive' stars which will inevitably spin up by losing angular momentum regardless of their equation of state. A supramassive star, spinning up via angular momentum loss, will ultimately evolve until it becomes unstable to catastrophic collapse to a black hole. Spin-up in a rapidly rotating star may thus be an observational precursor to such collapse.

The electronic structures of hydrogen polymolecules H(n) (n = 2,3,4,...) is studied in a superstrong magnetic field (B greater than about 10 exp 12 G) typically found on the surface of a neutron star. Simple analytical scaling relations for several limiting cases (e.g., large n, high B field) are derived. The binding energies of H(n) molecules are numerically calculated for various magnetic-field strengths. For a given magnetic-field strength, the binding energy per atom in the H(n) molecules is found to approach a constant value as n increases. For typical field strengths of interest, energy saturation is essentially achieved once n exceeds 3 to 4. Also considered is the structure of negative H ions in a high magnetic field. For B about 10 exp 12 G, the dissociation energy of an atom in a hydrogen chain and the ionization potential of H(-) are smaller than the ionization potential of neutral atomic hydrogen.

Equilibrium sequences of axisymmetric Newtonian clusters that tend toward singular states are constructed. The distribution functions are chosen to be of the form f = f(E, Jz). The numerical method then determines the density and gravitational potential self-consistently to satisfy Poisson's equation. For the prolate models, spindle singularities arise from the depletion of angular momentum near the symmetry axis. While the resulting density enhancement is confined to the region near the axis, the influence of the spindle extends much further out through its tidal gravitational field. Centrally condensed prolate clusters may contain strong-field regions even though the spindle mass is small and the mean cluster eccentricity is not extreme. While the calculations performed here are entirely Newtonian, the issue of singularities is an important topic in general relativity. Equilibrium solutions for relativistic star clusters can provide a testing ground for exploring this issue. The methods used in this paper for building nonspherical clusters can be extended to relativistic systems.

The influence of a high magnetic field (B is greater than 10 exp 12 G) on the degenerate matter equation of state appropriate to a neutron star is studied. The regime dominated by relativistic electrons up to the neutron drip density is highlighted. The equilibrium matter composition and equation of state, allowing for inverse beta-decay. Two different equilibrium models are determined: an ideal neutron-proton-electron (npe) gas and the more realistic model of Baym, Pethick, and Sutherland (1971) consisting of a Coulomb lattice of heavy nuclei embedded in an electron gas. For a sufficiently high field strength, the magnetic field has an appreciable effect, changing the adiabatic index of the matter and the nuclear transition densities. The influence of a strong field on some simple nonequilibrium processes, including beta-decay and inverse beta-decay (electron capture) is also considered. The effects produced by the magnetic field are mainly due to the changes in the transverse electron quantum orbits and the allowed electron phase space induced by the field.
