Located in the El Callao Mining District (Bolivar State), Choco 10 is one of the most important gold deposits in Venezuela. The deposit occurs in the greenstone belt of the Pastora Supergroup, a lithostratigraphic Province of the South American Guyana Shield. The Choco 10 lithostratigraphy is composed of two different formations. The lower El Callao Formation is composed of a Metabasalt Unit, mostly made of tholeiitic basalts, overlain by a Mafic Volcano-Sedimentary Unit, which represents its primary cover. The tholeiitic rocks show a flat, unfractionated REE pattern which is typical of greenstone belt basalts worldwide; the incompatible elements and REE distributions suggest a mid-ocean ridge or back-arc basin setting. Within the tholeiitic series, a transition to more evolved terms is suggested by the occurrence of rocks of andesitic composition mostly in the upper part of the same formation. The overlying Felsic Volcano-Sedimentary Unit, probably pertaining to the Cicapra Formation, is a relatively heterogeneous rock series largely composed of volcaniclastic rocks deriving from an acidic calc-alkaline source, as confirmed by the geochemical data. SHRIMP analyses on zircons from these rocks show consistent magmatic ages of 2143 ± 6 to 2145 ± 5 Ma. This unit contains a gabbroic sill-like body (Metagabbro Unit), composed of medium-grained amphibole gabbro, which yields an age (2142 ± 2 Ma) that is undistinguishable from that of the main body. Both formations are affected by a greenschist-facies metamorphic overprint and different deformation phases. At 2117 ± 3 Ma, the formations have been intruded by a trondhjemite that displays fractionated REE and incompatible elements patterns typical of calc-alkaline rocks. Gold has been introduced into the rock sequence in different stages; the main mineralization is related to highly focused flow of H 2 O–CO 2 , low salinity fluids to give quartz + ankerite ± albite ± pyrite veins, surrounded by strong sericite + carbonate + pyrite + quartz alteration. Gold concentrations are controlled by both structural setting and fluid–rock interaction processes. The gold metallogeny at El Callao is related to the world-scale metallogenic event of Paleoproterozoic age, which is responsible of important orogenic gold ores formation in the once adjacent Amazonian and West Africa cratons. Even in absence of direct dating of the hydrothermal phases, our precise geochronological dating – together with the geological and petrographic data – constrains the onset of deformation (i.e., the beginning of the Trans-Amazonian deformation) and the subsequent main mineralization phase to the time span comprised between 2142 and 2144 Ma (age of gabbro and calc-alkaline tuffs) and 2117 Ma (emplacement of the trondhjemite). • Subducted magma-poor rifted margins can efficiently exhume UHP rocks. • Conditions for magma-poor rifted margins may have arisen during Earth's middle age. • Abundant magma-rich margins in Early Earth prevented UHP rocks to exhume. In continental subduction, rifted margins can be carried to mantle depths (> 90 km) where ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphism above coesite stability is attained. Although different exhumation mechanisms for UHP rocks have been discussed, none of them integrate the recent understanding of rifted continental margins. Here, we perform high-resolution thermomechanical numerical experiments to demonstrate that segments of magma-poor rifted margins that reach UHP conditions can efficiently exhume back to shallower levels, while segments of magma-rich rifted margins cannot. This is because the thick layer of rocks with a basaltic composition in magma-rich margins becomes negatively buoyant during metamorphism, preventing their exhumation. This new concept might be pivotal for explaining why exhumed UHP rocks, a key feature of modern-style continental orogens, only appeared and became common late in Earth's history. We suggest that higher mantle potential temperatures and fertility in Earth's early history favored magma-rich rifted margins, making exhumation of UHP crust inefficient. Conditions for magma-poor rifted margins may have arisen during Earth's middle age (1.5–0.8 Ga) due to a colder, more refractory mantle that limited melting and magmatism. We argue that at the end of Neoproterozoic, these colder and positively buoyant magma-poor rifted margins were then subducted and efficiently exhumed to form the large collisional orogens of Gondwana where Earth's oldest coesite-bearing UHP rocks have been unequivocally found. • The Hotaka-Takidani volcano-plutonic complex is a felsic magmatic system. • The complex was long-lived (1.5 Myr) and sourced from a 15 km-thick reservoir. • The reservoir was built by a low long-term average magma flux (6 × 10−6 km3*km−2*yr−1). • A first episode of extraction led to the eruption of the 400 km3 Nyukawa dacite. • A threefold increase of the magma flux led to the emplacement of the pluton. Defining the physico-chemical evolution of felsic magmatic reservoirs in the middle-upper continental crust is crucial for understanding the connection between granitic plutons and silicic volcanic rocks and for research on the trigger mechanisms of volcanic eruptions. In this study, we investigate the formation and evolution of the Hotaka-Takidani volcano-plutonic complex (Japan) using a comprehensive approach that integrates zircon petrochronology with phase-equilibria and thermal modelling. The Takidani pluton is a Pleistocene tilted zoned intrusion of granodiorite-granite composition associated with at least two large caldera-forming eruptions. We have investigated the three uppermost units of the pluton and the oldest and more voluminous Nyukawa eruption, which deposited more than 400 km3 (DRE, dense rock equivalent) of crystal-rich dacitic ignimbrite. Amphibole thermobarometry, U-Pb zircon dates and geochemical data indicate that the Takidani pluton and the Nyukawa dacite were sequentially sourced from a 10–12 km-thick long-lived magmatic reservoir in the middle crust. Thermal evolution of the reservoir led to the extraction of the Nyukawa magma, followed by brief storage in the upper crust and eruption at ca. 1.706 ± 0.091 Ma. For two of the units of the pluton, we combine high-spatial resolution zircon U-Pb geochronology with zircon chemical data. Applying the Ti-in-zircon thermometer, we observe that magma within the reservoir was stored at a relatively constant temperature of ca. 700 °C for 300 kyr and subsequently, starting from 1.4 Ma, the temperature increased progressively reaching 820–850 °C at 1.1 Ma. This temperature shift is inconsistent with a constant magma flux and suggests an increase of the magma injection rate into the reservoir. Using the distribution of zircon ages and thermal simulations, we determined that the reservoir was built by a fairly low average magma flux of ca. 6 × 10−6 km3*km−2*yr−1, shifting to a magma supply rate which is three to four times higher during the last 300 ka of zircon crystallisation. This increase in magma flux caused the final emplacement of the Takidani magma in the upper crust, where it rapidly crystallized. The integration of geochronological data with phase-equilibria and thermo-chemical modelling demonstrates that multiple melt extraction events occurred during the evolution of the Hotaka-Takidani magmatic system. Abstract: We report the results of monazite/melt partitioning experiments conducted in the piston-cylinder apparatus at 10–50kbar and 750–1200°C, using a synthetic granite mix with approximately 10wt.% H 2 O and doped with trace-elements in proportions corresponding to the composition of monazite. Monazite was produced in all experiments, generally in the form of small grains. Electron microprobe and laser ablation-ICP-MS analyses were carried out on the resulting “monazite–melt” mixes from these experiments, and the composition of the crystallized monazite calculated using regression analysis. The concentrations of LREE and Th in the melts coexisting with monazite increase sharply with increasing temperature. Monazite solubility decreases by 35–40% as pressure increase from 10 to 30kbar. Monazite solubility in granitic melts with an Alumina Saturation Index above 0.85 and FeO + CaO + MgO < 3wt.% can be described by the following equation: Where H 2 O is in weight percent, T is in Kelvin, P in kbar and ∑ LREE is the sum of La–Sm in ppm; X mnz LREE is the molar ratio of LREE to the sum of all cations (REE, Th, U) in monazite. REE, Th, U, Y, V and As partition into monazite, whereas other trace elements (Li, Be, B, Sc, Ti, Mn, Sr, Zr, Nb, Ba, Hf, Ta and Pb) have monazite/melt partition coefficients less than unity. Monazite shows the greatest preference for LREE from La to Nd, with a progressive decrease in partition coefficients for Sm and the HREE. The partition coefficients for Th are 30% higher than those for the LREE, and Th/LREE ratios are independent of pressure and temperature. Partition coefficients for U are 4–23 times lower than for the LREE. The new experimental data provide a numerical basis for modeling the behavior of LREE, Th and U during fractional crystallization of granitic magmas, as well as the melting in the presence of monazite, both within the continental crust, and in subduction zones. Abstract: Monazite is a common accessory mineral in various metamorphic and magmatic rocks, and is widely used for U–Pb geochronology. However, linking monazite U–Pb ages with the PT evolution of the rock is not always straightforward. We investigated the behaviour of monazite in a metasedimentary sequence ranging from greenschist facies phyllites into upper amphibolites facies anatectic gneisses, which is exposed in the Eocene Chugach Metamorphic Complex of southern Alaska. We investigated textures, chemical compositions and U–Pb dates of monazite grains in samples of differing bulk rock composition and metamorphic grade, with particular focus on the relationship between monazite and other REE-bearing minerals such as allanite and xenotime. In the greenschist facies phyllites, detrital and metamorphic allanite is present, whereas monazite is absent. In lower amphibolites facies schists (~550–650°C and ≥3.4kbar), small, medium-Y monazite is wide-spread (Mnz1), indicating monazite growth prior and/or simultaneous with growth of garnet and andalusite. In anatectic gneisses, new low-Y, high-Th monazite (Mnz2) crystallised from partial melts, and a third, high-Y, low-Th monazite generation (Mnz3) formed during initial cooling and garnet resorption. U–Pb SHRIMP analysis of the second and third monazite generations yields ages of ~55–50Ma. Monazite became unstable and was overgrown by allanite and/or allanite/epidote/apatite coronas within retrograde muscovite- and/or chlorite-bearing shear zones. The prograde sequence of rare earth minerals recorded in metapelites during regional metamorphism reveals a series of irreversible reactions among silicates and phosphates. In individual samples from the northern Lepontine (Central Alps), allanite is partly replaced by monazite at 560-580 °C. Relic allanite retains its characteristic growth zoning acquired at greenschist facies conditions (430-450 °C). Coexisting monazite and allanite were dated in situ to delimit in time successive stages of the Barrovian metamorphism. In situ sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Tb-Pb dating of allanite (31.5 ± 1.3 and 29.2 ± 1.0 Ma) and monazite (18.0 ± 0.3 and 19.1 ± 0.3 Ma) constrains the time elapsed between 430-450 °C and 560-580 °C, which implies an average heating rate of 8-15 °C/m.y. Combined with new fission track ages (zircon, 10-9 Ma; apatite, 7.5-6.5 Ma), metamorphic rates of the entire orogenic cycle, from prograde to final cooling, can be reconstructed. Garnet with complex, discontinuous zoning is a common occurrence in metamorphic terrains, and the relationship between major and trace element zoning can provide insight into the metamorphic evolution of the host rock. Mylonitic micaschists along the Posada-Asinara Shear Zone in the Axial Zone of the Sardinia Variscan chain contain garnet porphyroblasts, enveloped by the S2 schistosity, with distinct core and rim domains. A large garnet porphyroblasts was investigated by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) mapping. The major element compositional variation follows a bell-shaped zoning, with Ca and Mn contents progressively decreasing, and Fe and Mg increasing, from the core to the outer rim. LA-ICPMS mapping revealed a thin and sharp annular enrichment zone in Y, Sc, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm at the mantle-rim boundary. The trace element (TE) compositional profiles show a central enrichment area for HREE (Tm, Yb, Lu). This enrichment decreases progressively, as a function of atomic number, for Er, Ho and Dy. Elements with even lower atomic number (Tb, Gd, Eu and Sm), are depleted in this central domain, but their content increases in broad shoulders towards the garnet rim. The position of these lateral shoulders migrates progressively rimwards with decreasing atomic number. The REE distribution, trend and behavior in the growth zones of the garnet is an example of TE control during a continuous growth ruled by diffusion-limited REE uptake. • Eclogitized olivine gabbro-norite is a new eclogite type in the Kuru-Vaara quarry. • Eclogites have Archean (ca. 2.88 Ga) and Proterozoic (ca. 2.44 Ga) protolith ages. • Ca. 1.9 Ga zircon from the Kuru-Vaara eclogites constrains prograde metamorphism. • Oxygen isotopes in metamorphic zircon and garnet indicate equilibrium between these minerals. The Belomorian Province of the Fennoscandian Shield exposes numerous Precambrian eclogites, which makes it significant for the study of early tectonic processes. The age of these eclogites has been discussed for more than 15 years and regarded as either Archean or Paleoproterozoic. In the Kuru-Vaara quarry within the northern Belomorian Province, the eclogitic assemblage is preserved in concordant mafic boudins in felsic gneisses and a partially eclogitized gabbro-norite dike cutting discordantly through the gneiss fabric. Both eclogite types preserve zircon cores with a magmatic geochemical signature that yield protolith ages of ca. 2.88 Ga for a mafic boudin and ca. 2.44 Ga for the eclogitized gabbro-norite. Ca. 1.9 Ga zircon rims and grains from the eclogites show low Th/U ratio and HREE depletion, reflecting the growth of metamorphic zircon in equilibrium with garnet. In the eclogite boudin, the Archean zircon cores yield δ18O = 5.1–5.9‰ typical of mantle melts; the oxygen isotope composition of garnet (δ18O = 4.0–5.0‰) is in equilibrium with that of the 1.9 Ga zircon (δ18O = 4.5–5.4‰). Garnet Lu-Hf geochronology coupled with U-Pb zircon geochronology constrains prograde metamorphism for the Kuru-Vaara eclogites at 1.92–1.89 Ga. Mineral inclusions of garnet, zoisite, plagioclase, kyanite, amphibole, quartz, and low-Na clinopyroxene in ca. 1.9 Ga zircon from the eclogite boudin imply epidote–amphibolite/amphibolite facies conditions for the prograde metamorphism. Thorium–lead (Th-Pb) crystallization ages of hydrothermal monazites from the western, central and eastern Tauern Window provide new insights into Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Tauern metamorphic dome. Growth domain crystallization ages range from 21.7 ± 0.4 to 10.0 ± 0.2 Ma. Three major periods of monazite growth are recorded between ∼ 22–20 (peak at 21 Ma), 19–15 (major peak at 17 Ma) and 14–10 Ma (major peak around 12 Ma), respectively, interpreted to be related to prevailing N–S shortening, in association with E–W extension, beginning strike-slip movements and reactivation of strike-slip faulting. Fissure monazite ages largely overlap with zircon and apatite fission track data. Besides tracking the thermal evolution of the Tauern dome, monazite dates reflect episodic tectonic movement along major shear zones that took place during the formation of the dome. Geochronological and structural data from the Pfitschtal area in the western Tauern Window show the existence of two cleft generations separated in time by 4 Ma and related to strike-slip to oblique-slip faulting. Abstract Eclogites are commonly seen as markers of subduction and thus their presence in Proterozoic and Archean orogenic provinces is crucial information for determining the initiation of modern plate tectonic. The Belomorian province hosts some of the oldest known eclogite-facies rocks. Here we present new garnet Lu Hf geochronology that constrains the prograde stage of Gridino-type eclogite to ca. 1.96–1.92 Ga. Inherited magmatic zircon cores have 176Hf/177Hf ratios that indicate isotopic disequilibrium between the inherited zircon cores and the metamorphic mineral assemblages, while the metamorphic rims have variable 176Hf/177Hf ratios that reflect Paleoproterozoic eclogite-facies metamorphism. Iterative thermodynamic models, involving the optimization of pressure (P), temperature (T) and reactive bulk composition (X) was used to reconstruct the P-T conditions recorded by garnet, and define the prograde trajectory. Zr-in-rutile thermometry, combined with equilibrium phase diagrams, constrains the peak P-T conditions at 725–750 °C and above 18 kbar, corresponding to an average apparent thermal gradient of below 41 °C/kbar. The P-T conditions of the high-pressure granulite facies overprint are 680–730 °C at 9–10 kbar. Thus, the metamorphic evolution of Gridino-type eclogite followed a clockwise P-T path with a cooling decompression stage, recording the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent during the Paleoproterozoic. Garnet and zircon geochronology combined with trace element partitioning and petrological studies provide tight constraints on evolution of the UHT-(U)HP terrain of the Orlica-Śnieżnik Dome (OSD) in the NE Bohemian massif. Lu-Hf dating of peritectic garnet from two mesocratic granulites constrained the time of its initial growth at 346.9 ± 1.2 and 348.3 ± 2.0 Ma recording peak 2.5 GPa pressure and 950 °C temperature. In situ, U-Pb SHRIMP dating of zircon from the same granulite gave a younger age of 341.9 ± 3.4 Ma. Ti-in-zircon thermometry indicates crystallization at 810–860 °C pointing to zircon formation on the retrograde path. Lu partitioning between garnet rim and zircon suggest equilibrium growth and thus U-Pb zircon age constrain the terminal phase of garnet crystallization which lasted about 6 Ma. All Sm-Nd garnet ages obtained for mesocratic and mafic granulites are identical and consistently younger than the corresponding Lu-Hf dates. They are interpreted as reflecting cooling of granulites through the Sm-Nd closure temperature at about 337 Ma. The estimated PTt path documents the ca. 10 Ma evolution cycle of the OSD characterized by two distinct periods: (1) 347 - > 342 Ma period corresponds to nearly isothermal decompression resulting from crustal scale folding and vertical extrusion of granulites, and (2) at > 342–337 Ma which corresponds to a fast, nearly isobaric cooling. One of the enduring debates in the study of the Himalayan orogen (and continental collision zones in general) is whether the salient observed features are explained (a) by localized deformation along discrete, narrow fault zones/ductile shear zones separating individual blocks or slices (e.g. critical taper or wedge tectonic models), or (b) by distributed deformation dominated by wide zones of visco-plastic flow in the solid or a partially molten state (e.g. channel flow models). A balanced cross-section from Sikkim in the eastern Himalaya that is based on structural data and is drawn to satisfy petrological and geophysical constraints as well, is used in combination with information from petrology, geochronology, geospeedometry and microstructural data to address this question. We discuss that any tectonic model needs to be thermally, rheologically, geometrically and temporally viable in order to qualify as a suitable description of a system; models such as channel flow and critical taper are considered in this context. It is shown that channel flow models may operate with or without an erosional porthole (channel with tunnel and funnel mode vs. channels with only the tunnel mode) and that the predicted features differ significantly between the two. Subsequently, we consider a large body of data from Sikkim to show that a channel flow type model (in the tunneling without funneling mode), such as the ones of Faccenda et al. (2008), describes features formed at high temperatures very well, while features formed at lower temperatures are more consistent with the operation of localized, fault-bounded, slice tectonics, (LFBST, be it in the form of critical taper, wedge tectonics, or something else). Thus, the two modes are not competing, but collaborating, processes and both affect a given rock unit at different points of time during burial, metamorphism and exhumation. A transitional stage separates the two end-member styles of tectonic evolution. The proposed models bear similarities to those suggested by Mallet (1875) and Auden (1935) and mechanisms proposed by Beaumont and Jamieson (2010). We conclude by discussing some of the implications of such a model for motion on the major Himalayan faults, and by considering which features of any given rock are likely to record signatures of a particular style of tectonic evolution. The Main Central Thrust (MCT) is a prominent continental-scale fault within the Himalaya. Its definition has been the topic of some debate in the literature. After a brief consideration of the state of discussion to clarify the definition we use in this work, we report features from the field- to the microstructural- scale of a particularly well-exposed section in Sikkim, NE India. The nature of the protoliths as well as the overlying and underlying rocks is characterized in terms of ε-Nd. The dates of motion on the fault are constrained using U–Pb geochronology of zircon and monazite from pegmatitic dikes that cross-cut the deformation fabric. It is found that the mechanism of deformation recorded in the fault zone rocks is different compared to that found in the overlying Greater Himalayan (GH) or the underlying Lesser Himalayan (LH) rocks. The GH and LH have different protolith characteristics as well. Combined with existing data on P–T history, dates of metamorphism, and cooling- and exhumation-rates of the GH and the LH, our measurements show that major motion on this fault occurred before 20 Ma at 450–700 °C but after peak metamorphism of rocks (750–800 °C) in this zone. Isolated events occurred in this zone as late as 11 Ma, possibly in the brittle domain. This underscores the pulsed nature of movement over an extended period on such major faults, and the related difficulties in dating fault movement, determination of the rates of movement, and designating a fault plane as in- or out-of-sequence within a propagating deformation front. The Oisans–Pelvoux massif belongs to the Paleozoic basement of the External western Alps and records high temperature (HT) metamorphism associated with intense migmatization during the syn to post-collisional stages of the Variscan orogeny. Metamorphic assemblages related to the early collision stages have been obliterated making it difficult to constrain the earlier evolution of the unit. In this study, we report the finding of new bodies of high pressure (HP) mafic granulites, which preserve relics of the prograde evolution. Relics of Mn-rich garnet cores containing inclusions of epidote, titanite, chlorite and rare white micas constrain an early prograde stage at 460–550 °C and 0.4–1.0 GPa. The HP assemblage consists in garnet + clinopyroxene+ quartz + rutile ± plagioclase ± amphibole ± biotite and yield peak-P conditions at 650–730 °C and 1.5–1.7 GPa. Decompression was associated with heating to HT granulite-facies conditions of 800–870 °C and 0.6–0.9 GPa, which led to the development of granoblastic polycrystalline mosaics over the resorbing HP assemblage. The U-Pb dating of magmatic zircon cores constrains the emplacement age of the mafic protoliths at 479 ± 5 Ma. Timing of the prograde to HP evolution is estimated around 345–330 Ma based on rutile U-Pb dating, which is contemporaneous with HP recorded in the other crystalline massifs of the western Alps. Zircon metamorphic rims yields U-Pb dates scattering between 337 and 294 Ma, which are interpreted to record crystallization during decompression and heating to granulite facies. Metamorphic conditions during the early prograde stage precludes scenarios involving subduction of a cold passive margin and are better reconciled with thickening of an orogenic wedge during collision. In contrast with other Variscan HP relics of the external Alps, the HP rocks of the Oisans–Pelvoux massif record heating to HT granulitic conditions during decompression, which may result from longer residence time in the lower crust before exhumation. • Prograde evolution is recorded by Variscan high-P granulites in the western Alps. • High-P conditions of ca. 1.5–1.7 GPa and 650–730 °C were reached around 345–330 Ma. • High-T overprint at ca. 800–870 °C and 0.6–0.9 GPa occurred during decompression. • The prograde apparent geotherm is inconsistent with a cold subduction setting. Abstract: The common occurrence of Ca- and Nd-rich accessory minerals titanite, epidote, allanite and apatite in calc-alkaline plutonic suites makes them ideal targets for in-situ tracing of the temporal, chemical and isotopic evolution of tonalitic and granodioritic melts. The Sm–Nd isotope composition of accessory phases from the calc-alkaline Bergell Pluton and the peraluminous Novate leucogranite (central Alps) were investigated using laser ablation MC-ICPMS techniques. Grouping of individual LA-MC-ICPMS analyses produced average εNd values with typical uncertainties of <0.3 (2σ) epsilon units. SHRIMP dating of magmatic allanite cores of epidote grains from a Bergell gabbro yielded a Th–Pb age of 32.4±0.4 Ma, which provides a new timing constraint on the emplacement of juvenile members within the Bergell intrusive sequence. The Bergell bulk-rock mantle-crust isotopic mixing curve was reproduced, demonstrating that integration of U–Th-rich accessory mineral Nd isotope compositions with crystallisation age is capable of tracing the geochemical evolution of magmatic systems over time. Crucially, the isotopic composition of the mantle end-member was successfully constrained by measurement of magmatic REE-epidote, highlighting the compositional versatility of accessory phases. The removal or addition of feldspar controls the Eu signature of both the bulk-rock and single minerals and therefore presents a unique trace element indicator of magmatic differentiation and assimilation processes in accessory minerals. Therefore the in-situ determination of age, Sm–Nd isotopes and trace elements in accessory minerals permits efficient and accurate reconstruction of complex magmatic processes in calc-alkaline plutonic suites. Sub-grain isotopic heterogeneity in magmatic monazite from the Novate leucogranite was identifiable by LA-MC-ICPMS analysis and emphasizes the additional value of a micro-analytical approach to understanding geological processes. Abstract: A newly recognized ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) terrane in the Chinese Western Tianshan orogenic belt contains blueschists, eclogites and metapelites. This belt extends westward to the “South Tianshan” in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan for more than 2500 km long in central Asia. New ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U–Pb dating of zircon from HP-UHP eclogites and metapelites indicates Triassic ages for the collision in western Tianshan. Zircon from four eclogites yields magmatic ages of 310–413 Ma in the cores and one metapelite contained detrital zircon cores as old as 1886±20 Ma. Zircon rims reveal the HP-UHP metamorphic ages of 233±4–226±4.6 Ma. The geochronologial data suggest that a South Tianshan paleo-ocean was developed between the Tarim continent and the Yili-central Tianshan Craton before the Carboniferous (>310 Ma). During the Permian–Triassic subduction and continent collision, oceanic basalts underwent HP/UHP metamorphism. A new tectonic model for HP-UHP metamorphic rocks of the Chinese Western Tianshan orogenic belt represented by HP-UHP metamorphic eclogitic rocks is proposed in the light of recent paleomagnetic, paleontologic, sedimentary and stratigraphic studies. Elevated δ18O is used as a marker for the presence of continents and surficial alteration in the Eoarchean and Hadean. This study establishes a timeline for δ18O enrichment in Eoarchean metasedimentary rocks of the Isua supracrustal belt in Greenland. The source-rocks for the protolith of these metasedimentary rocks are mafic to intermediate magmatic rocks of ≥3709 ± 4 Ma, based on the age of zircons found in volcanogenic layers. The δ18O of +5.4 ± 0.4‰ of the zircon crystals indicate that the sources had a primary mantle-derived signature. However, garnet in two metasediments yields higher δ18O values of +8.7 to +9.7‰, in equilibrium with a whole-rock of +11 to +12‰ at 500–600 °C. This requires that the mafic protolith was weathered at surficial conditions, in agreement with previous conclusions based on major element geochemistry. The garnet grains with high δ18O record four growth zones, assigned to I) arc-building thermal metamorphism, II–III) terrane assembly at medium to high-pressure conditions, estimated to occur at 3660–3690 Ma and IV) late-Archaean overprint likely at ca. 2690 Ma. This shows that material with originally mantle-like δ18O was altered at low temperature (near-surface) to generate elevated oxygen isotope signatures and then recycled to middle-crustal conditions within 10–50 million years of crystallization in the Eoarchean. Relicts of subducted oceanic lithosphere provide key information for the tectonic reconstructions of convergent margins. In the Central Alps, such relicts occur as isolated mafic-ultramafic lenses within the migmatites of the southern Adula nappe and Cima-Lunga unit. Analysis of the major-, minor-, and accessory minerals of these ophiolitic relicts, combined with zircon and rutile U-Pb ages and zircon oxygen isotopes, allows the reconstruction of different stages of their complex evolution. The mafic-ultramafic suite in Valle di Moleno consists of chlorite-harzburgites associated with metarodingites and retrogressed eclogites. Relic omphacite and kyanite in retrogressed eclogites provide evidence for subduction-related metamorphism. Increasing X Prp in the garnet mantle towards the rim documents heating during high-pressure metamorphism up to 800-850 °C. Polyphase inclusions and chemical zoning in garnet suggest fluid-assisted melting during high-pressure metamorphism dated at 31.0 ± 0.9 Ma. In Val Cama, chlorite-harzburgites, metarodingites and calcsilicate-metasediments occur. Detrital zircon ages in the metasediment suggest a Mesozoic deposition. The metarodingite-metaperidotite-metasediment association and the low δ 18 O signatures of zircon (δ 18 O 3.0-3.7‰), inherited from seafloor metasomatism of the protoliths, show that the rocks are derived from former altered oceanic crust. Amphibolite facies metamorphism related to the Central Alps Barrovian evolution in Val Cama occurred at 28.8 ± 1.5 Ma. The combined data from Moleno and Cama indicate a rapid transition (~ 2 Ma) from subduction to collisional metamorphism with corresponding exhumation rates of 3-6 cm/year. Fast exhumation tectonics may have been favored by slab break-off or slab extraction. The trace-element and isotope geochemistry of rutile are robust tools to determine metamorphic temperatures, age, and host-/source lithologies. The use of rutile as single grain indicator for pressure, temperature, time and composition (P-T-t-X) of the host rock, which is vital in the use of detrital rutile to trace plate-tectonic regimes throughout Earth's history, requires the identification of a pressure dependent trace element in rutile. We investigate the pressure dependence of hydrogen in rutile using polarized in-situ Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. H 2 O contents in rutile vary between < 10-2500 μg/g H 2 O with higher contents in samples with higher peak metamorphic pressures, making H 2 O-in-rutile a viable pressure indicator. The highest H 2 O contents at ~ 450-2000 μg/g are observed in mafic low temperature eclogite-facies rutile related to modern-style cold subduction conditions. Hydrogen zoning in FTIR maps indicates that H + is retained at temperatures below 600-700 °C. Ratios of H 2 O/Zr, using H 2 O as pressure indicator and Zr as temperature proxy, are a proxy for thermal gradients of metamorphic rutile (i.e. P/T). Low temperature eclogite samples are also characterized by high Fe contents and therefore Fe/Zr-ratios might be used as a first order approximation for H 2 O/Zr-ratios to identify mafic low temperature eclogite facies rutile. Based on common discrimination diagrams, Nb, W, and Sn can be used to distinguish different host/source rock lithologies of rutile. Combining both H 2 O/Zr-ratios and Nb, W, and Sn contents can thus identify modern-style cold subduction signatures in rutile. Fluid-rock interaction within the altered oceanic crust and across the slab-mantle boundary during subduction facilitates element transfer, but the dynamics of fluid transport and fluid-rock exchange during upward fluid migration are still unclear. A study of metamorphic fluid-rock interaction within a section of subducted oceanic crust was carried out on eclogites and metasediments of the ultra-high-pressure Lago di Cignana Unit (NW Italian Alps). The P - T modeling of a quartzschist shows that garnet grew during the prograde and sporadically during the retrograde path and that phengite mainly records the peak to retrograde conditions. Microscale geochemical analysis of garnets has revealed a systematic evolution of oxygen isotopic composition with garnet major element zonation, with extreme within-sample core-rim variations in δ 18 O between 18 and 4‰ providing evidence for external fluid influx. Garnet in eclogites and calcschists, as well as garnet cores in quartz-rich lithologies, shows normal compositional zoning, as expected for prograde garnet growth, and a relatively constant oxygen isotopic composition. The outer garnet growth zones within a few metasediments show reverse or discontinuous zoning and progressively lower δ 18 O. Despite major element zoning, the isotopic composition of mica is homogeneous across chemical zoning in one eclogite and one quartzschist, but shows 6‰ variability in another quartzschist. In the underlying Zermatt-Saas serpentinites, antigorite from nine serpentinite samples shows some variation in δ 18 O, with average δ 18 O values for individual samples ranging from 1 to 6‰. These results provide evidence for two main stages of external fluid infiltration: (i) fluids from the dehydration of mafic lithologies entered the sequence at peak conditions around 3 GPa, as indicated by the oxygen composition of intermediate zones of mica and garnet, and (ii) low δ 18 O fluids from serpentinites infiltrated parts of the sedimentary package during exhumation prior to 1.5 GPa, as recorded by the 4‰ garnet outer rims. Samples recording external fluid infiltration are concentrated in the lower part of the sequence, indicating channelized fluid flow, suggesting focused fluid infiltration due to permeability contrasts between metasedimentary and eclogitic lithologies. Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) extracts chemical, elemental, or isotopic information about a localized area of a solid target by performing mass spectrometry on secondary ions sputtered from its surface by the impact of a beam of charged particles. This primary beam sputters ionized atoms and small molecules (as well as many neutral particles) from the upper few nanometers of the sample surface. The physical basis of SIMS has been applied to a large range of applications utilizing instruments optimized with different types of mass analyzer, either dynamic SIMS with a double focusing mass spectrometer or static SIMS with a Time of Flight (TOF) analyzer. Microscale dating of distinct domains in minerals that contain relics of multiple metamorphic events is a key tool to characterize the polyphase evolution of complex metamorphic terranes. Zircon and allanite from five metasediments and five metaintrusive high-pressure (HP) rocks from the Eclogite Micaschist Complex of the Sesia Zone were dated by SIMS and LA-ICP-MS. In the metasediments, zircon systematically preserves detrital cores and one or two metamorphic overgrowths. An early Permian age is obtained for the first zircon rim in metasediments from the localities of Malone Valley, Chiusella Valley and Monte Mucrone (292 ± 11, 278.8 ± 3.6 and 285.9 ± 2.9 Ma, respectively). In the Malone Valley and Monte Mucrone samples, the early Permian ages are attributed to high-temperature metamorphism and coincide with the crystallization ages of associated mafic and felsic intrusions. This implies that magmatism and metamorphism were coeval and associated to the same tectono-metamorphic extensional event. In the Malone Valley, allanite from a metasediment is dated at 241.1 ± 6.1 Ma and this age is tentatively attributed to a metasomatic/metamorphic event during Permo-Triassic extension. Outer zircon rims with a late Cretaceous age (67.4 ± 1.9 Ma) are found only in the micaschist from Monte Mucrone. In metagabbro of the Ivozio Complex, zircon cores yield an intrusive age for the protolith of 340.7 ± 6.8 Ma, whereas Alpine allanite are dated at 62.9 ± 4.2 and 55.3 ± 7.3 Ma. The Cretaceous ages constrain the timing of the HP metamorphic stage.
