ABSTRACT The vision towards the Network of the Future cannot be separated from the fact that today's networks, and networking services are subject to sophisticated and very effective attacks. When these attacks first appeared, spoofing and distributed denial-of-service attacks were treated as apocalypse for networking. Now, they are considered moderate damage, whereas more sophisticated and inconspicuous attacks, such as botnets activities, might have greater and far reaching impact. As the Internet is expanding to mobile phones and 'smart dust' and as its social coverage is liberalized towards the realization of ubiquitous computing (with communication), the concerns on security and privacy have become deeper and the problems more challenging than ever. Re-designing the Internet as the Network of the Future is self-motivating for researchers, and security and privacy cannot be provided again as separate, external, add-on, solutions. In this paper, we discuss the security and privacy challenges of the Network of the Future and try to delimit the solutions space on the basis of emerging techniques. We also review methods that help the quantification of security and privacy in an effort to provide a more systematic and quantitative treatment of the area in the future. Service discovery can be greatly enhanced in terms of efficiency, both regarding service discoverability and energy consumption, by piggybacking service information into routing messages. Thus, service discovery does not generate additional messages and a node requesting a service, in addition to discovering that service, it is simultaneously informed of the route to the service provider. We extended the Zone Routing Protocol in order to encapsulate service information in its routing messages. Our extended protocol, E-ZRP, may be seen as a representative of routing layer protocols providing service discovery functionality. Simulations demonstrate the superiority of this routing layer-based service discovery scheme over that of a similar, but application layer based service discovery scheme. In order to have a thorough evaluation of our approach we introduced a new metric, called Service Availability Duration (SAD), which characterizes the ‘quality’ of discovered services and experimentally examines the implications of network density and node mobility on the availability of services discovered with E-ZRP, as a typical representative of routing layer based service discovery protocols. The World Wide Web provides a convenient and inexpensive infrastructure for Computer-Supported Cooperative Work. Groupware systems allow distant users to work together in a shared virtual workspace. Awareness of group members’ actions is a basic feature and key functionality for groupware. Many times a group of people work together researching information on the Web about a topic. This type of collaboration can be decomposed into two tasks. First, team members have to access, process and filter by importance the Web pages gathered. Second, they have to synthesize and present them either as a whole in the form of a report, or in an organized way in the form of Web directories. A key issue that strongly affects this particular type of cooperative work is the revisiting of pages and, consequently, the time spent on accessing and processing the same information sources, which may be relevant or not to the topic. We propose group member URL traversal awareness (GMUTA) as significant functionality for Web-based collaboration tools in order to avoid conflicting or repetitive actions by group members. We then present a prototype system we developed, the Web Collaborative Searching Assistant (WCSA), which exploits GMUTA and helps distributed group members to work more efficiently. Experimental evaluation of the WCSA indicated that the functionality provided overcomes the above-mentioned problem, improves searching efficiency and adds substantial value to the collaboration. We explore the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs), such as blockchains, in mobile gaming, focusing on ecosystem expansion and diversification, customer attraction and retention, exploitation of context sensitive and personalized advertisements, and improved monetization of in-game assets. We evaluate the cost and transaction delay of DLTs in a location-based mobile game ecosystem using two types of blockchains (permissioned and permissionless or public), based on defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Our evaluation shows the advantages of using both types of blockchains as well as interledger technologies that combine them. Permissioned blockchains enable high performance, e.g., in terms of throughput and delay, and low cost, while permissionless (public) blockchains, through their transparency, immutability, and openness, support trust and facilitate interactions among unrelated parties. Finally, we show that the combination of IoT devices and DLTs in mobile gaming offers new business opportunities and enables innovative business models for both traditional mobile gaming companies and other participants in the ecosystem, e.g., game players, cafes, malls, and similar establishments, advertising companies, and independent programmers. Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is an emerging communication paradigm built around content names. Securing ICN using named-based security is, therefore, a natural choice. For this paper, we designed and evaluated name-based security solutions that satisfy security requirements that are particular to ICN architectures. In order to achieve our goal, we leverage identity-based encryption, identity-based proxy re-encryption, and the emerging paradigm of decentralized identifiers. Our solutions support outsourcing content storage, content integrity protection and content authentication, and provenance verification, as well as access control. In the last few years, we have been witnessing the convergence of the physical with the digital world. The Internet of Things (IoT) is progressing at a fast pace, and IoT devices are becoming pervasive in our physical environments, bringing the vision of Intelligent Environments closer to reality. At the same time, the newly-introduced blockchain technology is offering for the first time ever cryptographically proven trust based on a set of mutually untrusted nodes. Blockchain technology thus has the potential to become a key component of many IoT systems, offering them an unprecedented level of accountability, transparency, and reliability. This paper first lays out the principles on which blockchain systems are operating, along with descriptions of the most noteworthy blockchain implementations. It then presents a number of systems through which blockchains may interact with external systems and third-party data sources. Low-cost wireless LAN equipment operating in unlicensed spectrum has revolutionized local area communications, introducing novel schemes for open wireless connectivity and even new business models. The ease of deployment of Wi-Fi has made it ubiquitous in densely populated urban areas, and it was just a matter of time before wireless communities emerged. Using inexpensive wireless technology to communicate, autonomous wireless internetworks have been built, offering a variety of broadband services. Based on our own experience participating in one of the largest wireless communities worldwide, the Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network, we attempt to explain their structure and mechanisms, study the reasons for their emergence and growth, and predict their future evolution. We expect that future wireless communities will be oriented toward providing broadband access to nomadic users. To this end, we have proposed that wireless network access be shared in a peer-to-peer, reciprocal manner. Thus, ubiquitous broadband Internet access can be achieved at a low cost, at least in metropolitan areas where there is abundant wireless coverage, providing an inexpensive alternative to broadband cellular services.
