Applied magnetic field dependence of thermal conductivity (TC) and the temperature dependences of resistivity and magnetization on the nickel borocarbide superconducting compound LuNi2B2C have been measured in the temperature range from 4.2 to 30 K, under the applied magnetic field range of 0–8 T. The magnetic field dependence of the TC showed characteristic behavior at the lower and the upper critical fields at temperatures below Tc. We present the first temperature dependence curve of upper critical field derived from the results of TC measurement of LuNi2B2C. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

It is demonstrated that Pd–Co films can be used to sense the hydrogen concentration in the gas phase using the changes in the magnetic susceptibility, caused by the hydrogen uptake at ambient temperature. The induced voltage, which is proportional to the magnetic susceptibility of the Pd–Co films, was changed by the hydrogen concentration under the flow of the hydrogen/nitrogen mixture, and saturated under a constant flow. The saturated value of the induced voltage decreased with the hydrogen concentration in the gas phase and the change in the induced voltage was detected at a hydrogen concentration of 0.2 vol%. Under the flow of dry air, the induced voltage also reacted to hydrogen. However, the induced voltage did not have a clear change under a hydrogen concentration of 0.2 vol% in dry air. Moreover, the response time it took to reach saturation, from the injection of hydrogen, was slower than that under a hydrogen/nitrogen mixture. This behavior was likely caused by the water-forming reactions, hindering the absorption of hydrogen in the Pd–Co films in the presence of oxygen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study introduces an innovative photolithography-based method for patterning ionic and inorganic particle materials such as silver iodide (AgI). Conventional methods lack precision when patterning powdered materials, which limits their applicability. The proposed method stacks layers of a particle material (AgI) and negative-tone photoresist for simultaneous ultraviolet exposure and development, resulting in well-defined AgI patterns. The sintering process successfully removed binders from the material layer and photoresist, yielding standalone AgI patterns on the Si substrate with good adhesion. The pitch remained consistent with the design values of the photomask when the pattern size was changed. In-situ observation of condensation frosting on the patterns was conducted, which confirmed the practicality of the developed patterning process. This versatile method is applicable to large areas with a high throughput and presents new opportunities for modifying functional surfaces.

Objective: Although a transient lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) has been reported predominantly regarding patients with epilepsia, it is of rare occurrence, and its underlying biological basis remains unknown. This is a report of an SCC lesion in a patient with anorexia nervosa (AN)., Method: The patient was a 15-year-old girl with childhood-onset (11 years) and a protracted course of AN. On admission, the patient showed no apparent neurological abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans revealed a circumscribed lesion in the SCC. We treated her with nutritional rehabilitation supplemented with B vitamins., Results: One month later, the lesion completely disappeared, but her weight was not restored., Conclusion: Treatment with B-vitamin supplementation may be beneficial for the treatment of patients with AN, in cases in which the disorder develops at an early age before brain maturation (i.e., childhood-onset cases), along with an enduring course of malnutrition., (Copyright (c) 2006 by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
