- Abstract
WOS: 000311537600003, High-spin states of K-40 have been populated in the fusion-evaporation reaction C-12(Si-30,np)K-40 and studied by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques using one triple-cluster detector of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Several states with excitation energy up to 8 MeV and spin up to 10(-) have been discovered. These states are discussed in terms of J = 3 and T = 0 neutron-proton hole pairs. Shell-model calculations in a large model space have shown good agreement with the experimental data for most of the energy levels. The evolution of the structure of this nucleus is here studied as a function of excitation energy and angular momentum., EURONS AGATA [506065-R113]; Swedish Research Council [621-2008-4163, 621-2011-4522, 822-2005-3332, 821-2010-6024]; Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Kakenhi [23.01752]; Ankara University [05B4240002]; Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education [DPN/N190/AGATA/2009, N N202 073935]; German BMBF [06K-167, 06KY205I, 06KY9136I]; Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation [2005.0184]; STFC (UK); MICINN, Spain; INFN, Italy [AIC-D-2011-0746]; Generalitat Valenciana, Spain [PROMETEO/2010/101]; MICINN, Spain [FPA2011-29854]; Comunidad de Madrid (Spain) [HEPHACOS S2009-ESP-1473]; Center for Advanced Studies of Warsaw University of Technology; Goran Gustafsson Foundation; Science and Technology Facilities Council [ST/G000727/1, ST/F004060/1, ST/I504959/1, ST/J000159/1, NuSTAR, ST/I504916/1, ST/J000108/1, ST/F004052/1, ST/J000094/1, ST/F004192/1, ST/F006950/1, ST/J000051/1], We thank the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) and the Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science (UPPMAX) for the computer resources used in parts of the analysis. WOS: 000310091000001, The level structures of the N = 50 As-83, Ge-82, and Ga-81 isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the gamma-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of Ni-78 (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28. Conference on Nuclear Physics - Extremes of the Nuclear Landscape -- AUG 30-SEP 05, 2010 -- Zakopane, POLAND, WOS: 000289009300049, A deep-inelastic reaction experiment with a Xe-136 beam impinging on a Pb-208 target was performed. Gamma rays were detected with the AGATA Demonstrator. The beam-like fragments were identified with the PRISMA spectrometer on event-by-event basis. Doppler corrected gamma-ray spectra were obtained for both the identified beam-like nuclei and for the target-like binary partners. This cross-coincidence method can be used to study heavy target-like nuclei which cannot be unambiguously identified in the spectrometer due to their large masses and low velocities., Science and Technology Facilities Council [ST/F006950/1, ST/I504932/1, ST/F012012/1, ST/F004176/1]

178th Course of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi on From the Big Bang to the Nucleosynthesis -- JUL 19-24, 2010 -- Varenna, ITALY, WOS: 000350800900023, The transition between order and chaos is studied in the warm rotating nucleus W-174 by gamma-spectroscopy, focusing on the conservation of selection rules of the K quantum number with the excitation energy. The W-174 nucleus was populated at high spins by the fusion-evaporation reaction of Ti-50 (at 217 MeV) on a Te-128 backed target. The experiment was performed in Legnaro National Laboratory using the AGATA Demonstrator HPGe-array (AD) coupled with an array of 27 BaF2 scintillator detectors. High-energy gamma-rays measured in the AD and in the scintillators array will be also analyzed to study the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) in the compound nucleus W-178. The discrimination between n and gamma in the AD detectors will be employed, following a procedure recently developed by Monte Carlo simulations and using digital Pulse Shape Analysis timing techniques., Ist Nazl Fisica Nucleare, INFN CNAF

- Abstract
The neutron-rich nucleus Pt200 is investigated via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy to study the shape evolution in the neutron-rich platinum isotopes towards the N=126 shell closure. The two-neutron transfer reaction Pt198(Se82, Se80)Pt200 is used to populate excited states of Pt200. The Advanced Gamma Ray Tracking Array (AGATA) demonstrator coupled with the PRISMA spectrometer detects γ rays coincident with the Se80 recoils, the binary partner of Pt200. The binary partner method is applied to extract the γ-ray transitions and build the level scheme of Pt200. The level at 1884 keV reported by Yates et al. [S. W. Yates, E. M. Baum, E. A. Henry, L. G. Mann, N. Roy, A. Aprahamian, R. A. Meyer, and R. Estep, Phys. Rev. C 37, 1889 (1988)] was confirmed to be at 1882.1 keV and assigned as the (61+) state. An additional γ ray was found and it presumably deexcites the (81+) state. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 190-204Pt isotopes, revealing that Pt200 marks the transition from the γ-unstable behavior of lighter Pt nuclei towards a more spherical one when approaching the N=126 shell closure., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
In the EXILL campaign a highly efficient array of high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors was operated at the cold neutron beam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to carry out nuclear structure studies, via measurements of gamma-rays following neutron-induced capture and fission reactions. The setup consisted of a collimation system producing a pencil beam with a thermal capture equivalent flux of about 10(8) ns(-1)cm(2) at the target position and negligible neutron halo. The targetwas surrounded by an array of eight to ten anti-Compton shielded EXOGAMClover detectors, four to six anti-Compton shielded large coaxial GASP detectors and two standard Clover detectors. For a part of the campaign the array was combined with 16 LaBr3:(Ce) detectors from the FATIMA collaboration. The detectorswere arranged in an array of rhombicuboctahedron geometry, providing the possibility to carry out very precise angular correlation and directional-polarization correlation measurements. The triggerless acquisition system allowed a signal collection rate of up to 6 x 10(5) Hz. The data allowed to set multi-fold coincidences to obtain decay schemes and in combination with the FATIMA array of LaBr3:(Ce) detectors to analyze half-lives of excited levels in the pico-to microsecond range. Precise energy and efficiency calibrations of EXILL were performed using standard calibration sources of Ba-133, Co-60 and Eu-152 as well as data from the reactions Al-27(n, gamma)Al-28 and Cl-35(n,gamma)Cl-36 in the energy range from 30 keV up to 10MeV., QC 20171121

- Abstract
During the AGATA campaign at GANIL, the neutron-deficient Sn region was populated via a multi-nucleon transfer reaction in order to directly measure the lifetime of the first excited states with a plunger device, providing complementary information to previous results obtained with Coulomb excitation experiments. The AGATA gamma-ray array was used together with the VAMOS++ spectrometer to study the nuclei of interest., QC 20170509

- Abstract
The current work presents the determination of lifetimes of nuclear excited states using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift Method, in combination with spectrometers for ion identification, normalizing the intensity of the peaks by the ions detected in the spectrometer as a valid technique that produces results comparable to the ones obtained by the conventional shifted-to-unsifted peak ratio method. The technique has been validated using data measured with the gamma-ray array AGATA, the PRISMA spectrometer and the Cologne plunger setup. In this paper a test performed with the AGATA-PRISMA setup at LNL and the advantages of this new approach with respect to the conventional Recoil Distance Doppler Shift Method are discussed., QC 20171117

- Abstract
The high-spin structures and isomers of the N = 81 isotones Xe-135 and Ba-137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe-136+ U-238 and (ii) Xe-136+ Pb-208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii) in the Xe-136+ Pt-198 MNT reaction employing the gamma-ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iv) via a B-11+ Te-130 fusion-evaporation reaction with the HORUS gamma-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes of Xe-135 and Ba-137 are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19/2(-)) state in Xe-135 is identified as an isomer, closing a gap in the systematics along the N = 81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 9.0(9) ns, corresponding to a reduced transition probability of B(E2,19/2(-) -> 15/2(-)) = 0.52(6) W.u. The experimentally deduced reduced transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions. Latest shell-model calculations reproduce the experimental findings generally well and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels.

- Abstract
The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This setup exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on simulations, expected performances of the AGATA l π array are presented., Title in WoS: Conceptual design of the AGATA 1 pi array at GANIL

- Abstract
The level scheme of Y-96 was significantly extended and a new 201 ns isomer was located at 1655 keV excitation energy, with spin-parity assignment of 5(+/-) or 6(-). The isomer decays to spherical low-spin structure by transitions with large hindrance and is fed by a short cascade which resembles the beginning of a rotational band. This is in analogy with the feeding and decay pattern of the 4(-) isomer in Y-98, here confirmed, by lifetime analysis, as a bandhead of a rotational structure with sizable deformation. It is suggested that the new isomer in Y-96 arises from a shape change between deformed and spherical configurations, which indicates the appearance of deformation already at N = 57 in the yttrium chain. The experimental findings for Y-96 are strengthened by theoretical calculations based on the complex Excited Vampir model.

- Abstract
Background: In the neutron-rich A approximate to 100 mass region, rapid shape changes as a function of nucleon number as well as coexistence of prolate, oblate, and triaxial shapes are predicted by various theoretical models. Lifetime measurements of excited levels in the molybdenum isotopes allow the determination of transitional quadrupole moments, which in turn provides structural information regarding the predicted shape change. Purpose: The present paper reports on the experimental setup, the method that allowed one to measure the lifetimes of excited states in even-even molybdenum isotopes from mass A = 100 up to mass A = 108, and the results that were obtained. Method: The isotopes of interest were populated by secondary knock-out reaction of neutron-rich nuclei separated and identified by the GSI fragment separator at relativistic beam energies and detected by the sensitive PreSPEC-AGATA experimental setup. The latter included the Lund-York-Cologne calorimeter for identification, tracking, and velocity measurement of ejectiles, and AGATA, an array of position sensitive segmented HPGe detectors, used to determine the interaction positions of the gamma ray enabling a precise Doppler correction. The lifetimes were determined with a relativistic version of the Doppler-shift-attenuation method using the systematic shift of the energy after Doppler correction of a gamma-ray transition with a known energy. This relativistic Doppler-shift-attenuation method allowed the determination of mean lifetimes from 2 to 250 ps. Results: Even-even molybdenum isotopes from mass A = 100 to A = 108 were studied. The decays of the low-lying states in the ground-state band were observed. In particular, two mean lifetimes were measured for the first time: tau = 29.7(-9.1)(+11.3) ps for the 4(+) state of Mo-108 and tau = 3.2(-0.7)(+ 0.7) ps for the 6(+) state of Mo-102. Conclusions: The reduced transition strengths B(E2), calculated from lifetimes measured in this experiment, compare

- Abstract
Prompt.-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich Kr-96, produced in transfer-and fusion-induced fission reactions, has been performed using the combination of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array and the VAMOS + +spectrometer. A second excited state, assigned to J pi = 4(+), is observed for the first time, and a previously reported level energy of the first 2+ excited state is confirmed. The measured energy ratio R-4/2 = E(4(+))/E(2(+)) = 2.12(1) indicates that this nucleus does not show a well-developed collectivity contrary to that seen in heavier N = 60 isotones. This new measurement highlights an abrupt transition of the degree of collectivity as a function of the proton number at Z = 36, of similar amplitude to that observed at N = 60 at higher Z values. A possible reason for this abrupt transition could be related to the insufficient proton excitations in the g(9/2), d(5/2), and s(1/2) orbitals to generate strong quadrupole correlations or to the coexistence of competing different shapes. An unexpected continuous decrease of R-4/2 as a function of the neutron number up to N = 60 is also evidenced. This measurement establishes the Kr isotopic chain as the low-Z boundary of the island of deformation for N = 60 isotones. A comparison with available theoretical predictions using different beyond mean-field approaches shows that these models fail to reproduce the abrupt transitions at N = 60 and Z = 36.

- Abstract
The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This setup exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy gamma rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on simulations, expected performances of the AGATA l pi array are presented.

- Abstract
Background: While the N = 50 shell-gap evolution towards Ni-78 is presently in the focus of nuclear structure research, experimental information on the neutron effective single-particle energy sequence above the Ni-78 core remain scarce. Direct nucleon-exchange reactions are indeed difficult with presently available post-accelerated radioactive-ion beams (especially for high orbital-momentum orbitals) in this exotic region. Purpose: In this study we probe the evolution of the vlg(7/2)effective single-particle energy which is a key to understanding the possible evolution of the spin-orbit splitting due to the proton-neutron interaction in the Ni-78 region. To achieve this goal, a method based on lifetime measurements is used for the first time. The obtained lifetimes of the 7/2(1)(-) states in Kr-87 and Se-85 are used to investigate the vlg7/2 evolution. Method: Yrast and near-yrast states in the light N = 51 isotones Se-85 and Kr-87 were populated via multinucleon transfer reactions, using a Se-82 beam and a U-238 target at the LNL tandem-ALPI facility. The prompt y rays were detected by the AGATA Demonstrator and particle identification was performed using the PRISMA spectrometer. Lifetime measurements were performed by using the Cologne plunger device for deep inelastic reactions and the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift technique. Results: We obtain (tau(7/21+)) = 0.4(-0.4)(+1.6) ps for Kr-87. In the case of Se-85 an upper limit of 3(2) ps is obtained for the (tau(7/21+)) value. Conclusion: For Kr-87, the measured (7/2(1)(+)) lifetime is consistent with a core-coupled 2(+) circle times v2d(5/2) configuration for this state. This result is consistent with that obtained by direct reaction, which validates our method. For Se-85, the measured (7/2(1)(+)) lifetime limit indicates a very small contribution of the vlg(7/2) configuration to the wave function of this state.

In this paper a test performed with the AGATA-PRISMA setup at LNL and the advantages of this new approach with respect to the conventional Recoil Distance Doppler Shift Method are discussed.

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The α decay of Th222 populating the low-lying Jπ=3− state, and also a proposed 1− state, in Ra218 has been observed. The observations suggest an excitation energy of 853 keV for the 1− state, which is 60 keV above the 3− state. The hindrance factors of these α decays give a possible boundary to the region of ground-state octupole deformation in the light-actinide nuclei. The relative positions of the Jπ=1− and 3− states suggest they are produced by an octupole-vibrational mechanism, as opposed to α clustering or rotations of a reflection-asymmetric octupole-deformed shape.

[PHYS.NEXP]Physics [physics]/Nuclear Experiment [nucl-ex] - Abstract
International audience; We performed a γ -particle coincidence experiment for the 60Ni+116Sn system to investigate whether thepopulation of the two-neutron pickup channel leading to 62Ni is mainly concentrated in the ground-state transition,as has been found in a previous work [D. Montanari et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 052501 (2014)]. The experimenthas been performed by employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer coupled to theAdvanced Gamma TrackingArray (AGATA) demonstrator. The strength distribution of excited states corresponding to the inelastic, one- andtwo-neutron transfer channels has been extracted. We found that in the two-neutron transfer channel the strengthto excited states corresponds to a fraction (less than 24%) of the total, consistent with the previously obtainedresults that the 2n channel is dominated by the ground-state to ground-state transition.

The γ decay from the high-lying states of ^140Ce excited via inelastic scattering of ^17O at a bombarding energy of 340 MeV was measured using the high-resolution AGATA-demonstrator array in coincidence with scattered ions detected in two segmented Δ E-E silicon detectors. Angular distributions of scattered ions and emitted γ rays were measured, as well as their differential cross sections. The excitation of 1^− states below the neutron separation energy is similar to the one obtained in reactions with the α isoscalar probe. The comparison between the experimental differential cross sections and the corresponding predictions using the distorted-wave Born approximation allowed us to extract the isoscalar component of identified 1^− pygmy states. For this analysis the form factor obtained by folding microscopically calculated transition densities and optical potentials was used.

International audience; We have performed the Zn70(d,He3)Cu69 proton pick-up reaction in direct kinematics using a deuteron beam at 27 MeV. The outgoing He3 particles were detected at the focal-plane detection system of an Enge split-pole spectrometer. The excitation-energy spectrum was reconstructed up to 7 MeV and spectroscopic factors were obtained after analysis of the angular distributions in the finite-range distorted-wave Born approximation. The results show three new angular distributions for which the πf7/2 strength was measured and a lower limit of the centroid is established. State-of-the-art shell-model calculations are performed and predict a πf7/2 strength that lies too high in energy in comparison to our experimental results.

We performed a gamma-particle coincidence experiment for the 60Ni+116Sn system in order to investigate whether the population of the two-neutron pick-up channel leading to 62Ni is mainly concentrated in the ground state transition, as has been found in a previous work. The experiment has been performed by employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer coupled to the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) demonstrator. The strength distribution of excited states corresponding to the inelastic, one- and two-neutron transfer channels has been extracted. We found that in the two-neutron transfer channel the strength to excited states corresponds to a fraction (less than 24%) of the total, consistent with the previously obtained results that the 2n channel is dominated by the ground to ground state transition.

Detailed spectroscopic information in the N~82 region is necessary to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region. The nuclear structure above long-lived isomers in 134Xe is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) and actinide fission. 134Xe was populated as (i) a transfer product in 136Xe+238U, and 136Xe+208Pb MNT reactions and (ii) as a fission product in the 136Xe+238U reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of beamlike transfer products with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The 136Xe+198Pt MNT reaction was studied with the gamma-ray spectrometer GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Chico. Several highspin states in 134Xe on top of the two long-lived isomers are discovered based on gamma-gamma coincidence relationships and information on the gamma-ray angular distributions as well as excitation energies from the total kinetic energy loss and fission fragments. The revised level scheme of 134Xe is extended up to an excitation energy of 5.832 MeV with tentative spin-parity assignments up to 16+. Previous assignments of states above the 7- isomer are revised. Latest shell model calculations employing two different effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings quite well and support the new spin and parity assignments.

The α decay of 222Th populating the low-lying J π = 3− state, and also a proposed 1− state, in 218Ra has been observed. The observations suggest an excitation energy of 853 keV for the 1− state, which is 60 keV above the 3− state. The hindrance factors of these α decays give a possible boundary to the region of ground-state octupole deformation in the light-actinide nuclei. The relative positions of the J π = 1− and 3− states suggest they are produced by an octupole-vibrational mechanism, as opposed to α clustering or rotations of a reflection-asymmetric octupole-deformed shape. peerReviewed

Neutron-rich isotopes around lead, beyond N = 126, have been studied exploiting the fragmentation of an uranium primary beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. For the first time beta-decay half-lives of Bi-219 and Tl-211,Tl-212,Tl-213 isotopes have been derived. The half-lives have been extracted using a numerical simulation developed for experiments in high-background conditions. Comparison with state of the art models used in r-process calculations is given, showing a systematic underestimation of the experimental values, at variance from close-lying nuclei. International audience; Lifetime measurements of excited states of the light $N=52$ isotones $^{88}$Kr, $^{86}$Se, and $^{84}$Ge have been performed, using the recoil distance Doppler shift method and VAMOS and AGATA spectrometers for particle identification and gamma spectroscopy, respectively. The reduced electric quadrupole transition probabilities $B(E2;2^+ \rightarrow 0^+)$ and $B(E2;4^+ \rightarrow 2^+)$ were obtained for the first time for the hard-to-reach $^{84}$Ge. While the $B(E2;2^+ \rightarrow 0^+)$ values of $^{88}$Kr, $^{86}$Se saturate the maximum quadrupole collectivity offered by the natural valence $(3s, 2d, 1g_{7/2}, 1h_{11/2})$ space of an inert $^{78}$Ni core, the value obtained for $^{84}$Ge largely exceeds it, suggesting that shape coexistence phenomena, previously reported at $N \lesssim 49$, extend beyond $N=50$. The onset of collectivity at $Z=32$ is understood as due to a pseudo-SU(3) organization of the proton single-particle sequence reflecting a clear manifestation of pseudospin symmetry. It is realized that the latter provides actually reliable guidance for understanding the observed proton and neutron single particle structure in the whole medium-mass region, from Ni to Sn, pointing towards the important role of the isovector-vector $\rho$ field in shell-structure evolution.
