Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sound stimulation on gonadal growth in male and female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) maintained under a photoperiod of 6 hr light and 18 hr dark (6L:18D) from 1 to 12 weeks of age (Experiment 1) or 1 to 14 weeks of age (Experiment 2). The quail were split into three sound environments as follows: 1) 12 hr of radio music (RS) beginning 1 hr before lights off; 2) 12 hr of vocalization from a breeding colony of quail (QV) beginning 1 hr before lights off; 3) no sound stimulation (NS). In Experiment 1, birds were killed at 8, 10, and 12 weeks of age and in Experiment 2, they were killed at 8, 10, 12, and 14 weeks of age. There were no significant differences in tests weights of the three groups at 8 and 10 wk of age (Experiment 1), but those of the RS and QV groups were larger (P less than or equal to .05) than those of the NS group at 12 weeks. Tests in the NS group appeared to grow between 8 and 10 weeks, then regress. There were no differences in testis weights at 8 and 10 weeks of age in Experiment 2. At 12 weeks, testes in the RS group were larger (P less than or equal to .05) than those of the other two groups and by 14 weeks testes of both sound stimulated groups were larger than the NS group and were also different from each other.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The effects of pulsed radiation on animal models were studied. Erythemic responses to laser radiation were observed macroscopically and were examined histologically by both light and electron microscopy. Based on statistical analysis of the biological data presented in this study, skin damage thresholds were calculated for short pulses with lasers at wavelengths of 265 nm and 308 nm.

In 1985-1987, a field trial of malaria control using deltamethrin impregnated mosquito nets was carried out with 4,450 people in the Buji district, Bao'an County, Guangdong Province, China. The vectors were exophilic Anopheles sinensis (80%) and the endophilic and anthropophilic An. anthropophagus (20%). The first impregnation of the nets was in June 1985 and the second in April 1986. About 87% of the population slept under treated nets. The indoor vector density decreased by 93% and remained at the same level during the second year. During the second year the average monthly malaria incidence was 1.3% for January-June, a decrease of 74.6% as compared with pretreatment data, and 0.85% from July to December, a decrease of 92.7%. In April 1986 and April 1987, the treatment was extended to the whole Buji District, which has a total population of approximately 40,000. The average monthly malaria incidence (April-December 1986 and 1987) was 0.54% and 0.17%, a decrease of 64.7% and 89% respectively as compared with the same period for the previous year.

Between March and August 1986 in Huangshi City, serum samples were collected from 316 apparently healthy barbers as a study group, as well as from 361 healthy employees of department stores as a control group. They were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), antibody to HBsAg (anti-HBs) and antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) by enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assays. Barbers showed a prevalence higher than that in controls for HBsAg (16.8 vs. 9.2%, P less than 0.01), anti-HBs (67.1 vs. 45.9%, P less than 0.001), and anti-HBc (39.2 vs. 21.2%, P less than 0.001). The prevalence of at least one marker of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was significantly higher in barbers than in controls (86.1 vs. 61.7%, P less than 0.001). Although the socioeconomic status and education level did not correlate with the frequency of HBV markers, the prevalence of HBsAg increased in parallel with the duration of practice. Because of their high risk for HBV infection, barbers need to be screened for markers of HBV infection on a routine basis, and are prime candidates for immunoprophylaxis with hepatitis B vaccine.

24 cases of open mitral-valvuloplasty were reported. The clinical date are back from October 1980 to July 1987. Operative technique, indication and contraindication are discussed. By preserving autovalvular tissue in site, some complications and the deterioration of the artificial valves can be avoided. One patient died postoperatively. The survivals were followed-up 3 months to 6.5 years (average 3.1 years). The authors considered that careful selection of patients, myocardial protection, and accurate manipulation of the operation are important factors of success.
