The South Asian haze builds up from December to May, is mostly of anthropogenic origin, and absorbs part of the solar radiation. The influence of interannual variations of absorbing aerosols over the Indo-Gangetic Plain in May on the Indian summer monsoon is characterized by means of an observational analysis. Insight into how the aerosol impact is generated is also provided. It is shown that anomalous aerosol loading in late spring leads to remarkable and large-scale variations in the monsoon evolution. Excessive aerosols in May lead to reduced cloud amount and precipitation, increased surface shortwave radiation, and land surface warming. The June (and July) monsoon anomaly associated with excessive May aerosols is of opposite sign over much of the subcontinent (although with a different pattern) with respect to May. The monsoon strengthens in June (and July). The analysis suggests that the significant large-scale aerosol influence on monsoon circulation and hydroclimate is mediated by the heating of the land surface, pursuant to reduced cloudiness and precipitation in May. Aerosol- and moonsoon-related droughts and floods are two of the most serious environmental hazards confronting more than 60% of the population of the world living in the Asian monsoon countries. In recent years, thanks to improved satellite and in situ observations, and better models, great strides have been made in aerosol and monsoon research, respectively. There is now a growing body of evidence suggesting that interaction of aerosol forcing with monsoon dynamics may alter the redistribution of energy in the atmosphere and at the Earth's surface, thereby influencing monsoon water cycle and climate. In this article, the authors describe the scientific rationale and challenges for an integrated approach to study tbe interactions between aerosol and monsoon water cycle dynamics. A Joint Aerosol-Monsoon Experiment (JAMEX) is proposed for 2007-11, with enhanced observations of the physical and chemical properties, sources and sinks, and long-range transport of aerosols, in conjunction with meteorological and océanographie observations in the Indo-Pacific continental and oceanic regions. JAMEX will leverage on coordination among many ongoing and planned national research programs on aerosols and monsoons in China, India, Japan, Nepal, Italy, and the United States, as well as international research programs of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Cloud and precipitation simulated using the three-dimensional (3D) Goddard Cumulus Ensemble (GCE) model are compared to Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) and Precipitation Radar (PR) rainfall measurements and Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) single scanner footprint (SSF) radiation and cloud retrievals. Both the model simulation and retrieved parameters are based upon observations made during the South China Sea Monsoon Experiment (SCSMEX) field campaign. The model-simulated cloud and rain systems are evaluated by systematically examining important parameters such as the surface rain rate, convective/stratiform percentage, rain profiles, cloud properties, and precipitation efficiency. It is demonstrated that the GCE model is capable of simulating major convective system development and reproduces the total surface rainfall amount as compared to rainfall estimated from the SCSMEX sounding network. The model yields a slightly higher total convective rain/stratiform rain ratio than the TMI and PR observations. The GCE rainfall spectrum exhibits a greater contribution from heavy rains than those estimated from PR or TMI observations. In addition, the GCE simulation produces much greater amounts of snow and graupel than the TRMM retrievals. The model’s precipitation efficiency of convective rain is close to the observations, but the precipitation efficiency of stratiform rain is much lower than the observations because of large amounts of slowly falling simulated snow and graupel. Compared to observations, the GCE produces more compact areas of intense convection and less anvil cloud, which are consistent with a smaller total cloud fraction and larger domain-averaged outgoing longwave radiation. The article explores the changes in long term tropical rainfall from 1979 to 2003 by analyzing rainfall data sets from the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) and the Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis Product (CMAP). Analysis of two data sets reveal a significant shift in the probability distribution function of tropical rainfall during the said period. The shift features a positive trend in the occurrence of heavy and light tropical rain, then a negative trend in moderate tropic rain. Moreover, the authors discuss the relations between the trends and changes in rainfall characteristics during the given period.

A previous study conducted in Taiwan found a 100% association between HLA-B*1502 allele and carbamazepine-induced Steven s-Johnson syndrome (SJS) in Han Chinese subjects, with an extremely high odds ratio compared with carbamazepine-tolerant subjects (odds ratio = 2,504). We examined this association in 24 Hong Kong Han Chinese subjects who had cutaneous adverse reactions induced by different antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). They were matched with 48 AED-tolerant controls. HLA-B*1502 was associated with severe cutaneous reactions (SCR) induced by AEDs, which included carbamazepine, phenytoin, and lamotrigine (p = 0.001, odds ratio = 17.6), but was not associated with maculopapular exanthema (MPE) (p = 0.32). Further studies in larger samples of ethnically matched subjects should be conducted to confirm the findings. Identification of genetic polymorphisms predisposing to development of AED-induced SCR offers the possibility of avoiding these high-risk drugs in genetically susceptible individuals. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an Epstein–Barr virus-associated disease with high prevalence in Southern Chinese. Using multiparametric flow cytometry, we identified significant expansions of circulating naïve and memory CD4+CD25high T cells in 56 NPC patients compared with healthy age- and sex-matched controls. These were regulatory T cells (Treg), as they overexpressed Foxp3 and GITR, and demonstrated enhanced suppressive activities against autologous CD4+CD25− T-cell proliferation in functional studies on five patients. Abundant intraepithelial infiltrations of Treg with very high levels of Foxp3 expression and absence of CCR7 expression were also detected in five primary tumours. Our current study is the first to demonstrate an expansion of functional Treg in the circulation of NPC patients and the presence of infiltrating Treg in the tumour microenvironment. We performed a retrospective analysis on the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) data of 53 consecutive Chinese patients with high-risk childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) diagnosed from 1989 to 2003. A significantly higher frequency of HLA-B67 in the male relapse group of patients [OR, 23.08; 95% CI, 5.31–100.36; p=0.0042; for statistical significance after Bonferroni correction (Bc) p Bc<0.0083] was identified after Bonferroni correction. Although not surviving the Bonferroni correction, gender effects on the association were also observed with HLA-A11, HLA-A32, HLA-A33, and HLA-B22, which were however more prevalent in the female patients and particularly those developing relapse. Two patients with HLA-A29 and HLA-B7 revealed significantly shortened survivals, suggestive of their potential prognostic impacts. Notably, for the first time, we found a significant correlation of leukocyte count with HLA types, where HLA-A33 ( p=0.006) or HLA-B17 ( p<0.001) signifies higher leukocytosis at presentation. In this study, we perform experiments with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (CGCM) to examine ENSO’s influence on the interannual sea-surface temperature (SST) variability of the tropical Indian Ocean. The control experiment includes both the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the ocean model component of the CGCM (the Indo-Pacific Run). The anomaly experiment excludes ENSO’s influence by including only the Indian Ocean while prescribing monthly-varying climatological SSTs for the Pacific Ocean (the Indian-Ocean Run). In the Indo-Pacific Run, an oscillatory mode of the Indian Ocean SST variability is identified by a multi-channel singular spectral analysis (MSSA). The oscillatory mode comprises two patterns that can be identified with the Indian Ocean Zonal Mode (IOZM) and a basin-wide warming/cooling mode respectively. In the model, the IOZM peaks about 3–5 months after ENSO reaches its maximum intensity. The basin mode peaks 8 months after the IOZM. The timing and associated SST patterns suggests that the IOZM is related to ENSO, and the basin-wide warming/cooling develops as a result of the decay of the IOZM spreading SST anomalies from western Indian Ocean to the eastern Indian Ocean. In contrast, in the Indian-Ocean Run, no oscillatory modes can be identified by the MSSA, even though the Indian Ocean SST variability is characterized by east–west SST contrast patterns similar to the IOZM. In both control and anomaly runs, IOZM-like SST variability appears to be associated with forcings from fluctuations of the Indian monsoon. Prognostic cloud schemes are increasingly used in weather and climate models in order to better treat cloud-radiation processes. Simplifications are often made in such schemes for computational efficiency, like the scheme being used in the National Centers for Environment Prediction models that excludes some microphysical processes and precipitation-radiation interaction. In this study, sensitivity tests with a 2-D cloud resolving model are carried out to examine effects of the excluded microphysical processes and precipitation-radiation interaction on tropical thermodynamics and cloud properties. The model is integrated for 10 days with the imposed vertical velocity derived from the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Response Experiment. The experiment excluding the depositional growth of snow from cloud ice shows anomalous growth of cloud ice and more than 20% increase of fractional cloud cover, indicating that the lack of the depositional snow growth causes unrealistically large mixing ratio of cloud ice. The experiment excluding the precipitation-radiation interaction displays a significant cooling and drying bias. The analysis of heat and moisture budgets shows that the simulation without the interaction produces more stable upper troposphere and more unstable mid and lower troposphere than does the simulation with the interaction. Thus, the suppressed growth of ice clouds in upper troposphere and stronger radiative cooling in mid and lower troposphere are responsible for the cooling bias, and less evaporation of rain associated with the large-scale subsidence induces the drying in mid and lower troposphere. This is an exploratory study to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of east China’s (EC) river runoff and their relationship with precipitation and sea surface temperature (SST) at the continental scale. Monthly mean data from 72 runoff stations and 160 precipitation stations in EC, covering a period between 1951 and 1983, are used for this study. The station river runoff data have been spatially interpolated onto 1° grid boxes as runoff depth based on an extracted drainage network. Comparing runoff depth with precipitation shows that seasonal variation in runoff is consistent with the development of the summer monsoon, including the delayed response of runoff in several subregions. The dominant spatial scales and temporal patterns of summer runoff and precipitation are studied with empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and wavelet analyses. The analyses show interannual, biennial, and longer-term variations in the EOF modes. South–north dipole anomaly patterns for the first two runoff EOF’s spatial distributions have been identified. The first/second runoff principal components (PCs) are highly correlated with the second/first precipitation PCs, respectively. The summer runoff’s EOF PCs also show significant correlations with the multivariate El Niño–Southern Oscillation index (MEI) of the summer and winter months, while the summer precipitation PCs do not. Statistic analysis shows that EOF1 of runoff and EOF2 of precipitation are related to El Niño, while EOF2 of runoff and EOF1 of precipitation are related to a dipole SST anomaly over the northwestern Pacific. The interdecadal relationship between summer runoff, precipitation, and SST variability is further studied by singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis. Pronounced warming (SST) and drying (runoff) trends in first SVD PCs have been identified. These SVDs are used to reconstruct a decadal anomaly pattern, which produces flooding in part of the Chang Jiang River basin and dryness in the northern EC, consistent with observations. A case of torrential precipitation associated with the mei-yu front, an Asian summer monsoon system east of the Tibetan Plateau, is studied using the coupled fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–NCAR Mesoscale Model (MM5) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Parameterization for Land–Atmosphere–Cloud Exchange model. The impact of both remote and local sources of water vapor on the location and intensity of mei-yu precipitation are studied by numerical experiments. The results demonstrate that the main source of water vapor for this heavy precipitation event over the Yangtze River Valley is the Bay of Bengal. Moisture is transported by a southwesterly low-level jet (LLJ) southeast of the Tibetan Plateau. Although the LLJ is largely manipulated by large-scale forcing, the mesoscale circulation that results from mei-yu condensational heating acts to increase the maximum wind speed of the jet. The condensation-induced local circulation strengthens the moisture transport in the LLJ, providing a positive feedback that sustains the mei-yu precipitation system. Precipitation recycling increases the total precipitation in the Yangtze River Valley only slightly, but it tends to shift the maximum rainfall center toward the warmer side of the mei-yu rain belt. We assesses the overall performance of state-of-the-art atmospheric GCMs in simulating the climatological variations of summer monsoon rainfall over the Asian-Western Pacific region and the systematic errors that are common to a group of GCMs. The GCM data utilized are obtained from 10 GCM groups participated in the CLIVAR/Monsoon GCM Intercomparison Project. The model composite shows that the overall spatial pattern of summer monsoon rainfall is similar to the observed, although the western Pacific rainfall is relatively weak. For the simulated precipitation over the western Pacific, the models can be classified into two categories. The first category of models simulates the precipitation more confined to the equatorial region and weaker precipitation in the subtropical western Pacific compared to the observed. The second category of models simulates large precipitation in the subtropical western Pacific but the region is shifted to the north by 5–10°. None of the models realistically reproduce the observed Mei-yu rain band in the region from the East China Sea to the mid Pacific. Most of the models produce a rain band along the continental side of East Asia. The climatological variations of simulated summer rainfall are examined in terms of their amplitude and their principal EOF modes. All models simulate larger amplitudes of the climatological seasonal variation of Indian summer monsoon than the observed, though most models simulate smaller amplitudes in the western Pacific. The ten model composite produces four leading EOF modes over the Asian-western Pacific region, which are remarkably similar to the observed counterparts. The first and second eigenmodes, respectively, represent the smoothed seasonal march of broad-scale monsoon and the onsets of the Indian and East Asian summer monsoon. The third and fourth modes relate to the climatological intraseasonal oscillation (CISO). In contrast to the model composite, several models fail to reproduce the first principal mode, and most models do not reproduce the observed modes higher than the second. The authors have conducted a series of experiments with a general circulation model to understand the influences of sea surface temperature (SST) and ground wetness (GW) (measured by snow amount and soil moisture content) on the Asian summer monsoon. The experiments are designed to illustrate the dominant features of monsoon response to SST and GW forcings and to delineate the relative importance of each forcing function in contributing to the variability of the monsoon. Results indicate that ocean basin-scale SST anomalies exert a stronger control on the interannual variability of the monsoon compared to GW anomalies. The impact of SST anomalies on the monsoon appears nonlinear with respect to warm and cold events. The monsoon is weakened during the warm events but changes less noticeably during the cold events. The diminution of monsoon circulation associated with the warmSST anomalies is accompanied by a broad-scale reduction in water vapor convergence and monsoon rainfall. Results also indicate that, following wet land surface conditions (enhanced snow and soil moisture) in the Asian continent during previous cold seasons, the summer monsoon becomes moderately weaker. Antecedent land surface processes mainly influence the early part of the monsoon. Wetter and colder conditions occur in the Asian continent during warm SST events. This results in reduced land--sea thermal contrast, which reinforces the weak monsoon anomalies produced initially by warm SST forcing. These interactive forcings are also responsible for the changes in the winter--spring westerlies over subtropical Asia, which are key precursory signals for the subsequent summer monsoon. It should be pointed out that this study is conducted for the climate decade of 1979--88 only. The general robustness of the results needs to be explored by further investigations. The climatology and the basic state of the summertime circulation and rainfall over South America are studied using assimilation products from the data assimilation system of Goddard Earth Observing System-1 (GEOS-1) and satellite-derived rainfall. Results indicate the existence of a regional summer monsoon circulation regime induced by strong diabatic heating over the subtropical South American highland centered at the Altiplano Plateau. Sensitivity of the results to the assimilation scheme is tested by comparing that with the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis and with satellite rainfall estimates. Results show general agreement between the model produced rainfall anomaly and the satellite estimates, as well as consistency between the basic circulation features in the GEOS-1 and the NCEP reanalyses. A case study of 1989-90 South American summer monsoon (SASM) reveals the following characteristics. 1) In late spring, the onset of SASM is signaled by an abrupt merging of the upper-tropospheric double westerly jets, one in the subtropics and the other in the subpolar region, into a single jet in the midlatitudes. This is followed by the establishment of a vortex to the southeast of Altiplano and occurrence of heavy precipitation over subtropical eastern Brazil. 2) During the mature phase of SASM, the heavy rainfall zone moves over the Altiplano Plateau and the southernmost Brazilian highland. The fully established SASM features are the following: (a) an enhancement of equatorial North Atlantic trade wind, which emanates from the Sahara high and crosses the equator over the South American continent; (b) a buildup of strong northwesterlies along the eastern side of the tropical Andes; and (c) development of the South Atlantic convergence zone in the southernmost position with strong convective activity. Dietary zinc deficiency in rats induces hyperplasia in the esophagus and increases N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBA)-induced esophageal tumor incidence. Previous work showed a direct relationship between epithelial cell proliferation and esophageal tumor incidence in rats given multiple doses of NMBA. We investigated the effects of single low doses of NMBA in zinc-deficient rats since a single dose of 5.0 mg/kg was reported to be non-carcinogenic in rats. Zinc-sufficient and deficient rats received a single i.g. dose of NMBA at 0.5 or 2.0 mg/kg. At week 14, tumor incidence was 50% with 0.8 +/- 1.0 tumors/rat, and 80% with 2.2 +/- 1.9 tumors/rat, in deficient groups, D(0.5) and D(2.0), that received the lower and higher dose, respectively. In addition, two small papillomas were found in one out of eight untreated zinc-deficient rats. None of the NMBA-treated or untreated zinc-sufficient rats had any tumors. Esophageal cell proliferation, as determined by proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry, showed that, irrespective of NMBA treatment, deficient esophagi had significant increases in the number of labeled cells, the total number of cells, and the labeling index, as compared with zinc-sufficient ones. Mutations in Ha-ras and p53 genes in esophageal tumors were detected by single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. DNA sequencing of variant conformers revealed a point mutation (GGA-->GAA, codon 12) in Ha-ras in 4/5 (80%) and 5/8 (63%) tumors, from D(0.5) and D(2.0) rats, respectively. Three out of eight tumors from D(2.0) rats exhibited SSCP mobility shifts within p53 exons 5 and 7: two tumors (2/8, 25%) had missense mutations and the third, a silent mutation. Of the two tumors with p53 mutations, one had a double mutation (transition at codon 164, TCA-->TTA; transversion at codon 241, AGT-->TGT), and the other tumor, a transition at codon 172 (AGA-->GGA), with amino acid changes in all cases. In parallel with PCNA expression, elevated p53 expression was associated with hyperplastic and dysplastic regions, as well as with tumors, in deficient esophagi. In short, these data indicate that dietary zinc deficiency, with its associated sustained increased cell proliferation in the esophagus, can drive an otherwise non-tumorigenic dose of NMBA into a highly tumorigenic one. High efficiency GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are demonstrated by a nanoscale epitaxial lateral overgrowth (NELO) method on a SiO2 nanorod-array patterned sapphire substrate (NAPSS). The transmission electron microscopy images suggest that the voids between SiO2 nanorods and the stacking faults introduced during the NELO of GaN can effectively suppress the threading dislocation density. The output power and external quantum efficiency of the fabricated LED were enhanced by 52% and 56%, respectively, compared to those of a conventional LED. The improvements originated from both the enhanced light extraction assisted by the NAPSS and the reduced dislocation densities using the NELO method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
