404. Comparing the Effectiveness of Scripted and Non-Scripted Language Arts Programs in Low-Performing Schools

Abstract

The goals of this research are two-fold: (1) to survey the literature comparing the effectiveness (as measured by student achievement on state tests) of scripted language arts/reading programs in low-performing schools, and (2) to compare middle school teachers' attitudes (measured in questionnaires, interviews and surveys) on implementation and effectiveness of such reading programs in Program Improvement schools, varying in PI status (PI Year 1, 3, 5 or Exited). This investigator reviewed the literature, and then surveyed, interviewed, collected and analyzed data from (27) teachers in Santa Clara County middle schools that varied according to their Program Improvement Year status. Findings from the teacher data and the literature review indicate a high level of support for "direct instruction"--a common feature of scripted reading programs. The teacher interviews indicate that, regardless of years of teaching experience, most teachers in program improvement and exited schools in the sample preferred non-scripted language arts programs. This sample, while acknowledging the role of direct instruction, preferred balance approaches in instruction that included both scripted and non-scripted materials and strategies. Abstract

Located in the critical 1p36 microdeletion region, the chromodomain helicase DNA-binding protein 5 (CHD5) gene encodes a subunit of the nucleosome remodeling and deacetylation (NuRD) complex required for neuronal development. Pathogenic variants in six of nine chromodomain (CHD) genes cause autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorders, while CHD5-related disorders are still unknown. Thanks to GeneMatcher and international collaborations, we assembled a cohort of 16 unrelated individuals harboring heterozygous CHD5 variants, all identified by exome sequencing. Twelve patients had de novo CHD5 variants, including ten missense and two splice site variants. Three familial cases had nonsense or missense variants segregating with speech delay, learning disabilities, and/or craniosynostosis. One patient carried a frameshift variant of unknown inheritance due to unavailability of the father. The most common clinical features included language deficits (81%), behavioral symptoms (69%), intellectual disability (64%), epilepsy (62%), and motor delay (56%). Epilepsy types were variable, with West syndrome observed in three patients, generalized tonic–clonic seizures in two, and other subtypes observed in one individual each. Our findings suggest that, in line with other CHD-related disorders, heterozygous CHD5 variants are associated with a variable neurodevelopmental syndrome that includes intellectual disability with speech delay, epilepsy, and behavioral problems as main features.

411. Children's Services, Wages and WorkChoices: A 'Fairer' Workplace Relations System?

Abstract

In March 2006 the Industrial Relations Commissions of New South Wales and Queensland utilised their equal-remuneration wage-fixing principles to address the gender undervaluation of childcare work. In doing so the tribunals explicitly rejected employer arguments used in the past to limit increases in award rates of pay for childcare workers. While these decisions were thought to have a wide ranging impact on a significant area of feminised work, their influence is likely to be short-lived. The introduction of the Howard Government's new federal workplace relations system under the WorkChoices legislation provides employers with the opportunity to reargue the NSW and Queensland equal-remuneration cases. This opportunity is facilitated by the operation of the award "rationalisation" process and the determination of minimum wages and classification scales by the new Australian Fair Pay Commission. Some employers are utilising these opportunities to argue for cuts to the award wages of childcare workers, both in nominal and real terms. In this context it is difficult to conclude that the federal WorkChoices wage-fixing system is a fair system. (Contains 4 footnotes.)

418. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Late-Onset Smoking in the Vietnam Era Twin Registry

Abstract

Epidemiological and clinical studies have consistently reported associations between smoking and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study analyzed diagnostic interview data on 6,744 members of the Vietnam Era Twin Registry to clarify the PTSD-smoking relation and to examine whether genetic liability for smoking moderated this relation. Preexisting active (unremitted) PTSD increased risk of late-onset daily smoking. Remitted PTSD decreased risk. Active PTSD increased risk of smoking at all levels of genetic liability; the effect was strongest for those with least genetic liability. This suggests PTSD represents a nongenetic pathway to late-onset smoking among individuals who were nonsmokers prior to developing PTSD. If replicated, these results identify PTSD as a risk factor for smoking that should lead to early tobacco control treatment in this population.

421. Gender, the Labour Market, the Workplace and Policy in Children's Services: Parent, Staff and Student Attitudes

Abstract

This paper reports the attitudes of parents, staff and teacher education students towards the employment of men in the children's services "industry". The attitudinal survey questions were grouped around four distinct issues: gender roles, labour market behaviour, workplace behaviour and policy. Surprisingly, all three stakeholder groups surveyed expressed similar views on the four issues. While the results suggest that attitudes are not an impediment to increasing the number of male workers, they also suggest recruitment strategies need to be cognisant of both the potential advantages and disadvantages of a more gender-balanced workforce. The findings question policies based on the need to have male "role models" in children's services. (Contains 4 tables and 3 footnotes.)

422. Supporting Empathy in Online Learning with Artificial Expressions

Abstract

Motivated by a consideration of the machine-mediated nature of human interaction in web-based tutoring, we propose the construction of artificial expressions, displays which reflect users' felt bodily experience, to support the development of greater empathy in remote interaction. To demonstrate the concept of artificial expressions we have implemented a system for the real-time visual display of affective signals such as respiration, pulse, and skin-conductivity which, combined with contextual information, may help partners in a learning interaction to estimate one another's level of arousal, stress, or boredom, for example. We have employed this system in a trial learning situation for the remote teaching and learning of Janka, the Chinese characters used in written Japanese. (Contains 6 figures.)
