Abstract

Tagged photons can be used to study astrophysically relevant cross sections with highest energy resolution. The tagging facility NEPTUN at the S–DALINAC, Darmstadt, Germany, is presented and it is demonstrated how NEPTUN can be used to study short-lived branching nuclei of s-process nucleosynthesis.

Abstract

High energy photons are an important experimental probe in nuclear structure physics and have been used in the past decades for the investigation of low-spin structures of atomic nuclei. A topic of particular interest in recent years in this field is the Pygmy Dipole Resonance, an electric dipole (E1) excitation mode located well below the E1 giant resonance. Even though the PDR has been investigated systematically using high energy photons its decay properties were not accessible up to now. Abstract

Count rates in gamma-ray detectors are fundamentally limited at the high end by the physics of the detection process but should not be limited further by the design of read-out. Using intense stimuli, such as the ELI, it is desirable to extract the full wealth of information flow that sensors can deliver. We discuss the photon-statistical limitations of scintillation systems and charge-collection issues of solid-state detectors. With high-speed digitizing in particular, two promising approach architectures are those of posterior list mode corrections and of time-domain adaptive filters, introducing a "rich list mode with uncertainties" and thus a somewhat different look at experimental spectra. Abstract

Objectives: To document the long-term follow-up (FU) of patients who received right-ventricular additional high-voltage pace/sense (HV-P/S) leads at our institution for various reasons. Background: In patients with an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) it is a possible therapeutical strategy to implant an additional combined HV-P/S lead to overcome issues associated with defects of HV-P/S leads. The clinical outcome of these patients is yet undocumented. Methods: Retrospective analysis was done using 28 patients (23 male, age 54.0 15.9 years, LVEF 47.8 18.6 %, CAD in 11 [39%], DCM in 6 [21%]) who received 7.3 2.8 years after first implantation of an HV-P/S lead an additional one between April 2000 and August 2004. Values are expressed as mean standard deviation. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were calculated. Results: Average FU after implantation of the additional HV-P/S was 13.7 10.9 months. 24 patients [85.7%], remained implanted, while 2 patients had a complete system explantation (infection: 1; electrical interference between the two HV-P/S leads: 1), and 2 patients died from cardiac related events. In 1 patient the new lead dislocated and had to be repositioned. The estimated freedom of any event after implantation of the additional HV-P/S lead after 1 and 2 years was 80% and 74%, respectively. Conclusions: Implantation of an additional HV-P/S lead in case of failure of the old integrated defibrillation lead is safe. It should be considered at least in those patients with increased risk for lead extraction and/or poor prognosis.

Abstract

Today's power electronics modules typically consist of a ceramics substrate (DCB - Direct Copper Bond), carrying IGBTs, diodes or MOSFETs. These semiconductors are soldered or sintered to the ceramics and their top sides are interconnected by thick Al wires. An integration of further components or functions on the DCB substrate is difficult or even not possible. Therefore, driver circuits and controllers have to be mounted to a separate substrate, typically an organic Printed Circuit Board (PCB). The PCB has to be connected to the DCB by wires or pins. The mechanical integration of the whole system requires a bulky housing, often made of die cast Al. In the last years, the capability of PCB embedding technology for the realization of low and high voltage power modules was demonstrated. Fraunhofer IZM together with partners from the industry demonstrated the feasibility of an automotive inverter with 600 V and 50 kW switching power, containing 18 embedded Si IGBTs and diodes. Another 600 V module demonstrated the capability of embedded SiC chips for very fast switching modules with extremely low parasitic effects. Both modules were planar and further SMC components could be assembled on top. A large variety of embedded power electronic modules has been realized so far. Size and performance of the systems differ accordingly. They range from modules with lateral dimensions of a few square millimeters having a few components embedded for low voltage and currents of up to 50 Amperes, to complex assemblies with 24+ embedded semiconductors and a module area of several square decimeters for an operating Voltage of 600 V and a total power of 150 kW. The present paper will give an overview of different developments and results in power electronic embedding using PCB technologies. A variety of results from recent projects dealing with embedded power modules will be presented. To address the integration of the required driver circuits and controllers, the idea of modularization of such electronics systems will be presented. Here already packaged components will be used and embedded into PCB layers too. As a result, a modular approach to form a complete system will be developed. Different functional layers, e.g., power switches, logic modules, will be formed and finally stacked und connected to form the system. Abstract

The growth of thick ZnSe films with high crystalline quality on a Si substrate is impaired by the 4.4% lattice mismatch at the interface. Based on the concept of van der Waals epitaxy, an InSe buffer layer was inserted between ZnSe and Si. The three-monolayer-thick buffer layer was grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a hydrogen-terminated Si(111) substrate. Despite a lattice mismatch of 4.2%, the InSe film grew with high crystalline quality and without lattice distortions. ZnSe was subsequently grown on the InSe layer. The lattice mismatch of 0.2% at this interface appeared to be favorable for the growth of high-quality ZnSe films. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction and ex situ atomic force microscopy studies in the thin-film growth regime are presented.

Abstract

1,4-Additions of PhCu · BF3, n-Bu · BF3 and MeCu · BF3 to the trans-8-phenyl-menthyl enoates 1 proceeded with high chiral induction. Saponification of the resulting esters 2 gave the corresponding enantiomerically pure β-substituted alkanoic acids 3 and the recovered (−)-8-phenylmenthol in good overall yields. Analogous additions to the cis-crotonate 1 led preferentially to the acids 3 enantiomeric to those obtained from the trans-crotonate 1, although with lower selectivity. A stereochemical model is proposed consistent with the observed results (Scheme 2, Table).
