Various X-ray techniques are employed to investigate specimens in diverse fields. Generally, scattering and absorption/emission processes occur due to the interaction of X-rays with matter. The output signals from these processes contain structural information and the electronic structure of specimens, respectively. The combination of complementary X-ray techniques improves the understanding of complex systems holistically. In this context, we introduce a multiplex imaging instrument that can collect small-/wide-angle X-ray diffraction and X-ray emission spectra simultaneously to investigate morphological information with nanoscale resolution, crystal arrangement at the atomic scale and the electronic structure of specimens. In the 5G network, small cells play a key role in enhancing network capacity and providing ultra-fast, low-latency data services. The traffic load per small cell is highly dynamic and suffers from rapid fluctuations, necessitating appropriate user association algorithms for load balancing. Nevertheless, existing researches often adopt overly tractable traffic models or rely on outdated datasets, making their sophisticated algorithms ineffective. In this paper, we take an improved approach: (i) we collect real-world 5G traffic data ourselves to accurately model the traffic load, and (ii) propose a low-complexity, one-shot user association algorithm, which makes a decision with a single computation without iterative operations. The proposed algorithm determines user association for cell-edge users based on the biased received power of small cells. Crucially, it dynamically adjusts the bias of each small cell in response to its traffic load. We have discovered that the 5G traffic load is dynamic, yet sufficiently predictable due to its daily pattern. Leveraging this characteristic, the proposed algorithm increases the bias value for small cells predicted to have lower traffic load in the near future and decreases it for those expected to have higher traffic load, thus achieving load balancing in 5G networks. The simulation results verify the superiority of our approach in terms of load fairness over the conventional static bias schemes, such as cell range expansion (CRE), although it slightly underperforms compared to the near-optimal results derived from an iterative solution with significantly higher computational complexity.

X-ray structural science is undergoing a revolution driven by the emergence of X-ray Free-electron Laser (XFEL) facilities. The structures of crystalline solids can now be studied on the picosecond time scale relevant to phonons, atomic vibrations which travel at acoustic velocities. In the work presented here, X-ray diffuse scattering is employed to characterize the time dependence of the liquid phase emerging from femtosecond laser-induced melting of polycrystalline gold thin films using an XFEL. In a previous analysis of Bragg peak profiles, we showed the supersonic disappearance of the solid phase and presented a model of pumped hot electrons carrying energy from the gold surface to scatter at internal grain boundaries. This generates melt fronts propagating relatively slowly into the crystal grains. By conversion of diffuse scattering to a partial X-ray pair distribution function, we demonstrate that it has the characteristic shape obtained by Fourier transformation of the measured F(Q). The diffuse signal fraction increases with a characteristic rise-time of 13 ps, roughly independent of the incident pump fluence and consequent final liquid fraction. This suggests the role of further melt-front nucleation processes beyond grain boundaries.

Self-seeded hard X-ray pulses at PAL-XFEL were used to commission a resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy experiment with a von Hamos spectrometer. The self-seeded beam, generated through forward Bragg diffraction of the [202] peak in a 100 mm-thick diamond crystal, exhibited an average bandwidth of 0.54 eVat 11.223 keV. A coordinated scanning scheme of electron bunch energy, diamond crystal angle and silicon monochromator allowed us to map the Ir Lβ2 X-ray emission lines of IrO2 powder across the Ir L3-absorption edge, from 11.212 to 11.242 keV with an energy step of 0.3 eV. This work provides a reference for hard X-ray emission spectroscopy experiments utilizing self-seeded pulses with a narrow bandwidth, eventually applicable for pump--probe studies in solid-state and diluted systems. African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious and lethal disease with characteristics of hemorrhagic fever. ASF outbreaks in pig farms significantly damage the entire pork industry. Understanding the transmission dynamics of ASF is crucial to effectively respond. Notably, it is important to know when the infection started on the outbreak farm. This study aimed at establishing a procedure for estimating the time of infection on pig farms affected by the ASF outbreak in Korea. The protocol for sampling to detect ASF virus infection, the estimation of the time interval between infection and detection, and the estimation of the infection stage parameters for the simulation model were described. After infection, fattening sheds (9.8 days in median) had the longest detection time compared with pregnant (8.6 days) or farrowing sheds (8.0 days). The intervals were 8.8 days for farrow-to-finisher farms, 7.0 days for farrow-to-weaning farms, and 9.5 days for fattening farms. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into ASF outbreaks in pig farms thus, improving the disease control ability.

Adverse drug events are significant causes of emergency department visits. Systematic evaluation of adverse drug events leading to emergency department visits by age is lacking. This multicenter retrospective observational study evaluated the prevalence and features of adverse drug event-related emergency department visits across ages. We reviewed emergency department medical records obtained from three university hospitals between July 2014 and December 2014. The proportion of adverse drug events among total emergency department visits was calculated. Outbreaks of H5-type highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry have been reported in various parts of the world. To respond to these continuous threats, numerous surveillance programs have been applied to poultry raising facilities as well as wild birds. In Korea, a surveillance program was developed aimed at providing a preemptive response to possible outbreaks at poultry farms. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively present the risks of HPAI evaluated by this program in relation to actual outbreak farms during the epidemic of 2020/2021. A deep learning-based risk assessment program was trained based on the pattern of livestock vehicles visiting poultry farms and HPAI outbreaks to calculate the risk of HPAI for farms linked by the movement of livestock vehicles (such farms are termed “epidemiologically linked farms”). A total of 7,984 risk assessments were conducted, and the results were categorized into four groups. The proportion of the highest risk level was greater in duck farms (13.6%) than in chicken farms (8.8%). Among the duck farms, the proportion of the highest risk level was much greater in farms where breeder ducks were raised (accounting for 26.4% of the risk) than in farms where ducks were raised to obtain meat (12.8% of the risk). A higher risk level was also found in cases where the species of the outbreak farm and epidemiologically linked farms were the same (proportion of the highest risk level = 13.2%) compared to that when the species between the two farms were different (7.9%). The overall proportion of farms with HPAI outbreaks among epidemiologically linked farms (attack rate, AR) was 1.7% as HPAI was confirmed on 67 of the 3,883 epidemiologically linked farms. The AR was highest for breeder ducks (15.3%) among duck farms and laying hens (4.8%) among chicken farms. The AR of the pairs where livestock vehicles entered the inner farm area was 1.3 times (95% confidence interval: 1.4–2.9) higher than that of all pairs. With the risk information provided, customized preventive measures can be implemented for each epidemiologically linked farm. The use of this risk assessment program would be a good example of information-based surveillance and support decision-making for controlling animal diseases.

This paper proposes a QoS-guaranteed scheduling algorithm that considers the available resources and traffic load of small cell. Even though the available resources are scarce or traffics to be scheduled are overloaded, Guaranteed Bit Rate (GBR) traffic such as VoIP and video should be supported. The proposed algorithm provides a flexible weight ratio between GBR and Non-GBR traffic according to resources and traffic load. Furthermore, since QoS is considered by simple QoS Class Identifier (QCI), low complexity is achieved. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves QoS including delay and Packet Loss Rate (PLR) performance effectively. The article presents ultrafast x-ray diffraction study of melt-front dynamics in polycrystalline thin films. Topic include macroscopic materials are polycrystalline, containing a density of differently oriented grains separated by grain boundaries (GBs); and designed to explore the time dependence of laser-induced structural changes in polycrystalline gold (Au) thin films of 50-, 100-, and 300-nm thicknesses prepared with the electron beam evaporation technique.

Atherosclerosis is the most common root cause of arterial disease, such as coronary artery disease and carotid artery disease. Hypoxia is associated with the formation of macrophages and increased inflammation and is known to be present in lesions of atherosclerotic. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are one of the major components of blood vessels, and hypoxic conditions affect VSMC inflammation, proliferation and migration, which contribute to vascular stenosis and play a major role in the atherosclerotic process. Estrogen receptor (ER)-ß is thought to play an important role in preventing the inflammatory response in VSMCs. In this report, we studied the antiinflammatory effect of indazole (In)-Cl, an ERß-specific agonist, under conditions of hypoxia. Expression of cyclooxygenase-2 reduced by hypoxia was inhibited by In-Cl treatment in VSMCs, and this effect was antagonized by an anti-estrogen compound. Additionally, the production of reactive oxygen species induced under conditions of hypoxia was reduced by treatment with In-Cl. Increased cell migration and invasion by hypoxia were also dramatically decreased following treatment with In-Cl. The increase in cell proliferation following treatment with platelet-derived growth factor was attenuated by In-Cl in VSMCs. RNA sequencing analysis was performed to identify changes in inflammation-related genes following In-Cl treatment in the hypoxic state. Our results suggest that ERß is a potential therapeutic target for the suppression of hypoxia-induced inflammation in VSMCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
