403. Generation of the Submicron Soft X-Ray Beam Using a Fresnel Zone Plate.

Abstract

We have developed a fully coherent x-ray laser at 13.9 nm and the application research has been started. The generation of submicron x-ray beam is important for the application of high intensity x-ray beam, such as the non-linear optics, the material science, and the biology. The submicron x-ray bee am is generated by the soft x-ray laser with using a Fresnel zone plate. The spot diameter is estimated about 680 nm (290 nm at FWHM) by the theoretical calculation. In this experiment, the diameter of the x-ray beam is measured by the knife-edge scan. The diameter and the intensity are estimated 730 nm (310 nm at FWHM) and 3x1011 W/cm2, respectively. Abstract

The interaction of large xenon clusters with an x-ray laser pulse having a wavelength of 13.9 nm and intensity of up to 2x1010 W/cm2 was investigated using a time-of-flight ion mass spectrometer. The photon energy is high enough to photoionize the inner-shell electron of the Xe atom. In contrast to the experiment at synchrotron radiation, the enhancement of double Auger decay probability with increasing cluster size and x-ray laser intensity was observed for the first time. Abstract

We developed new power amplifier using a zigzag slab Nd:glass to generate the TCE x-ray lasers more frequently. The chirped laser light at the wavelength of 1053 nm was amplified to > 10 J and then compressed to be ~1.6 ps at repetition rate of 0.1 Hz. Abstract

We are developing plasma x-ray lasers pumped by ultra-short pulse lasers and have concentrated our efforts on developing a silver x-ray laser (13.9 nm) with spatially full coherence by means of a double target method. Recently, we have succeeded in developing a unique new pumping laser system, which is a CPA laser consisting of OPCPA and zigzag-slab type glass amplifiers. The OPCPA was adopted for improving the controllability of pumping pulses instead of a regenerative amplifier and the zigzag-slab amplifiers were adopted for increasing the repetition rate. Abstract

Picosecond x-ray speckles experiment has been conducted with a simple setup. The source was a compact silver-plasma-based x-ray laser, with a wavelength of 13.9 nm and pulse duration of 7 ps. The sample was a single crystal of BaTiO3, with ferroelectric multi-domain structure (a/c domains). The matter correlation function, including statistical information of those randomly distributed scatterers (domains here) within the sample, was extracted by deconvolution of the speckle pattern. The instantaneous x-ray speckle technique has proved to be particularly efficient to be used to observe fast microscopic-scale phenomena that are hard to access with other methods currently. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Holographic capability of a Lloyd's mirror wavefront-splitting interferometer was experimentally investigated. The radiation source was a TCE Ni-like Ag X-ray laser at 13.9 nm, routinely operated ar JAERI. The X-ray beam was focused down to a point located a few centimeters in front of the close edge of the Lloyd's mirror, in order to produce a near-spherical diverging wave a portion of which, upon reflection by the mirror, recombines with the portion of the wave propagating in free space. The holographic capability of the setup was examined in two configurations. In the first configuration, pertinent to a transmission holography, a test object consisting of a 50-µm wire was used to produce a diffracted wave encoded as holographic information inthe generated interferogram. In the second configuration, SnO[SUB2] powder with grains of ~100 nm, deposited on the Lloyd's mirror surface, was used to demonstrate a reflection hologram. The data obtained in both cases show that the Lloyd's mirror is a convenient setup for holographic probing with high spatial resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have demonstrated a high gain neonlike argon ion x-ray laser using a gas puff target. The elongated x-ray laser plasma column was produced by irradiating the gas puff target with line focused double picosecond laser pulses with a total energy of 9 J in a travelling-wave excitation scheme. Strong lasing was observed and a high gain coefficient of 18.7 cm[SUP-1] was measured on the transient collisionally excited 3p [SUP1]S[SUB0] - 3s [SUP1]P[SUB1] transition for neonlike argon at 46.9 nm with targets up to 0.45-cm long. Abstract

In situ and ex situ Raman analyses of porous Ni/CGO electrodes reveal differences in the amount, location and type of carbon formed during CO/CO2 electrolysis. The results demonstrate the limitations of optical in situ techniques applied to Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs) operated in electrolysis conditions. Increased carbon deposition close to the electrode–electrolyte interface is likely to be the result of high charge-transfer current in that area. The positive effect of a CGO interlayer on reducing carbon formation on the fuel electrode is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
