Twisted interfaces between stacked van der Waals cuprate crystals enable tunable Josephson coupling between in-plane anisotropic superconducting order parameters. Employing a novel cryogenic assembly technique, we fabricate Josephson junctions with an atomically sharp twisted interface between Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x crystals. The Josephson critical current density sensitively depends on the twist angle, reaching the maximum value comparable to that of the intrinsic junctions at small twisting angles, and is suppressed by almost 2 orders of magnitude yet remains finite close to 45 degree twist angle. Through the observation of fractional Shapiro steps and the analysis of Fraunhofer patterns we show that the remaining superconducting coherence near 45 degree is due to the co-tunneling of Cooper pairs, a necessary ingredient for high-temperature topological superconductivity.

Motivated by the recent proposals for unconventional emergent physics in twisted bilayers of nodal superconductors, we study the peculiarities of the Josephson effect at the twisted interface between $d$-wave superconductors. We demonstrate that for clean interfaces with a twist angle $\theta_0$ in the range $0^\circ

Deep learning approaches have produced substantial breakthroughs in fields such as image classification and natural language processing and are making rapid inroads in the area of protein design. Many generative models of proteins have been developed that encompass all known protein sequences, model specific protein families, or extrapolate the dynamics of individual proteins. Those generative models can learn protein representations that are often more informative of protein structure and function than hand-engineered features. Furthermore, they can be used to quickly propose millions of novel proteins that resemble the native counterparts in terms of expression level, stability, or other attributes. The protein design process can further be guided by discriminative oracles to select candidates with the highest probability of having the desired properties. In this review, we discuss five classes of generative models that have been most successful at modeling proteins and provide a framework for model guided protein design.

In fermionic systems, superconductivity and superfluidity are enabled through the condensation of fermion pairs. The nature of this condensate can be tuned by varying the pairing strength, with weak coupling yielding a BCS-like condensate and strong coupling resulting in a BEC-like process. However, demonstration of this cross-over has remained elusive in electronic systems. Here we study graphene double-layers separated by an atomically thin insulator. Under applied magnetic field, electrons and holes couple across the barrier to form bound magneto-excitons whose pairing strength can be continuously tuned by varying the effective layer separation. Using temperature-dependent Coulomb drag and counter-flow current measurements, we demonstrate the capability to tune the magneto-exciton condensate through the entire weak-coupling to strong-coupling phase diagram. Combining various two-dimensional materials into novel van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has been shown to lead to new emergent quantum systems. A novel heterostructure composed of a vdW topological insulator (TI) such as Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ with a quantum spin liquid (QSL) such as $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ is of great interest for the potential for the chiral Dirac electrons in the TI surface states to interact strongly with the fractionalized fermionic spin excitations in the QSL. We report the heteroepitaxial growth of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ thin films on $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ as well as the characterization of their structural and electrical properties. Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ thin films with an atomically smooth and uniform surface are grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The heterostructure exhibits a preferential epitaxial relationship corresponding to $(5 \times 5)-$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}/(2\sqrt{3} \times 2\sqrt{3})R30\deg-\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ commensurate supercells with a periodicity of 1.2 nm. The formation of the superlattice despite a lattice mismatch as large as 60% is attributed to the van der Waals heteroepitaxy. Magnetotransport measurements as a function of temperature show Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ films grown on $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ are heavily $n$-doped, $n_{e}$ ~10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, with mobility $\mu$ ~450 cm$^{2}$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ at low temperatures., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures; accepted in Physical Review Materials

A Wigner crystal, a regular electron lattice arising from strong correlation effects, is one of the earliest predicted collective electronic states. This many-body state exhibits quantum and classical phase transitions and has been proposed as a basis for quantum information processing applications. In semiconductor platforms, two-dimensional Wigner crystals have been observed under magnetic field or moir\'e-based lattice potential where the electron kinetic energy is strongly suppressed. Here, we report bilayer Wigner crystal formation without a magnetic or confinement field in atomically thin MoSe$_2$ bilayers separated by hexagonal boron nitride. We observe optical signatures of robust correlated insulating states formed at symmetric (1:1) and asymmetric (4:1 and 7:1) electron doping of the two MoSe$_2$ layers at cryogenic temperatures. We attribute these features to the bilayer Wigner crystals formed from two commensurate triangular electron lattices in each layer, stabilized via inter-layer interaction. These bilayer Wigner crystal phases are remarkably stable and undergo quantum and thermal melting transitions above a critical electron density of up to $6 \times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ and at temperatures of ~40 K. Our results demonstrate that atomically thin semiconductors provide a promising new platform for realizing strongly correlated electronic states, probing their electronic and magnetic phase transitions, and developing novel applications in quantum electronics and optoelectronics., Comment: 4 figures

Van der Waals heterostructures obtained via stacking and twisting have been used to create moiré superlattices, enabling new optical and electronic properties in solid-state systems. Moiré lattices in twisted bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) result in exciton trapping, host Mott insulating and superconducting states6 and act as unique Hubbard systems whose correlated electronic states can be detected and manipulated optically. Structurally, these twisted heterostructures feature atomic reconstruction and domain formation. However, due to the nanoscale size of moiré domains, the effects of atomic reconstruction on the electronic and excitonic properties have not been systematically investigated. Here we use near-0°-twist-angle MoSe₂/MoSe₂ bilayers with large rhombohedral AB/BA domains to directly probe the excitonic properties of individual domains with far-field optics. We show that this system features broken mirror/inversion symmetry, with the AB and BA domains supporting interlayer excitons with out-of-plane electric dipole moments in opposite directions. The dipole orientation of ground-state Γ–K interlayer excitons can be flipped with electric fields, while higher-energy K–K interlayer excitons undergo field-asymmetric hybridization with intralayer K–K excitons. Our study reveals the impact of crystal symmetry on TMD excitons and points to new avenues for realizing topologically non-trivial systems, exotic metasurfaces, collective excitonic phases and quantum emitter arrays via domain-pattern engineering.

Quantum interferometers are powerful tools for probing the wave-nature and exchange statistics of indistinguishable particles. Of particular interest are interferometers formed by the chiral, one-dimensional (1D) edge channels of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) that guide electrons without dissipation. Using quantum point contacts (QPCs) as beamsplitters, these 1D channels can be split and recombined, enabling interference of charged particles. Such quantum Hall interferometers (QHIs) can be used for studying exchange statistics of anyonic quasiparticles. In this study we develop a robust QHI fabrication technique in van der Waals (vdW) materials and realize a graphene-based Fabry-P\'erot (FP) QHI. By careful heterostructure design, we are able to measure pure Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference effect in the integer QHE, a major technical challenge in finite size FP interferometers. We find that integer edge modes exhibit high visibility interference due to relatively large velocities and long phase coherence lengths. Our QHI with tunable QPCs presents a versatile platform for interferometer studies in vdW materials and enables future experiments in the fractional QHE.

Strong variations in superconducting critical temperatures in different families of the cuprate perovskites, even with similar hole doping in their copper-oxygen planes, suggest the importance of lattice modulation effects. The one-dimensional incommensurate lattice modulation (ILM) of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+y}, with the average atomic positions perturbed beyond the unit cell, offers an ideal test ground for studying the interplay between superconductivity and the long-range incommensurate lattice fluctuations. Here we report Scanning nano X-ray Diffraction (SnXRD) imaging of incommensurate lattice modulations in Bi_{2.1}Sr_{1.9}CaCu_{2.0}O_{8+{\delta}} Van der Waals heterostructures of thicknesses down to two-unit cells. Using SnXRD, we probe that the long-range and short-range incommensurate lattice modulations in bulk sample surface with spatial resolution below 100 nm. We find that puddle-like domains of ILM of size uniformly evolving with dimensionality. In the 2-unit cell thin sample, it is observed that the wavevectors of the long- and short-range orders become anti-correlated with emerging spatial patterns having a directional gradient. The emerging patterns, originated by tiny tuning of lattice strain, induce static mesoscopic charge density waves. Our findings thus demonstrate that the strain can be used to tune and control the electromagnetic properties of two-dimensional high-temperature superconductors.

The twist degree of freedom provides a powerful new tool for engineering the electrical and optical properties of van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we show that the twist angle can be used to control the spin-valley properties of transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers by changing the momentum alignment of the valleys in the two layers. Specifically, we observe that the interlayer excitons in twisted WSe₂/WSe₂ bilayers exhibit a high (>60%) degree of circular polarization (DOCP) and long valley lifetimes (>40 ns) at zero electric and magnetic fields. The valley lifetime can be tuned by more than 3 orders of magnitude via electrostatic doping, enabling switching of the DOCP from ∼80% in the n-doped regime to

We construct a van der Waals heterostructure consisting of three graphene layers stacked with alternating twisting angles $\pm\theta$. At the average twist angle $\theta\sim 1.56^{\circ}$, a theoretically predicted magic angle for the formation of flat electron bands, narrow conduction and valence moir\'e bands appear together with a linearly dispersing Dirac band. Upon doping the half-filled moir\'e valence band with holes, or the half-filled moir\'e conduction band with electrons, displacement field tunable superconductivity emerges, reaching a maximum critical temperature of 2.1 K at optimal doping and displacement field. By tuning the doping level and displacement fields, we find that superconducting regimes occur in conjunction with flavour polarization of moir\'e bands bounded by a van Hove singularity (vHS) at high displacement fields. This experimental observation is found to be inconsistent with a weak coupling description, suggesting that the observed moir\'e superconductivity has an unconventional nature., Comment: 35 pages, 14 figures. Prozesse der Globalisierung haben zu einer Entfremdung der Konsument*innen von den Herstellungsbedingungen von Lebensmitteln gefuhrt. Es findet eine Dissoziation des Produktes von den Informationen uber seine Herstellung und deren Auswirkungen statt. Am Beispiel der intensiven Fleischproduktion und dem mit ihr verbundene Anfallen von Gulle und anderen Exkrementen diskutieren wir, wie die mit der (globalen) Organisation und den Bedingungen der Herstellung in einem Produktionsnetzwerk verbundenen Risiken mit Hilfe des Globale Produktionsnetzwerke-Ansatzes analysiert werden konnen. Als Fallbeispiel dient dabei der Nordwesten Deutschlands. Die Fallstudie veranschaulicht wie die Wahrnehmung unterschiedlicher Formen von Risiken durch die Akteur*innen auf ihrer Einbindung in die Region beruht. Zudem zeigt die Analyse, wie die starke Einbettung der regionalen Agrar- und Biogasindustrie es den Akteur*innen erlaubt hat, ihre Wertschopfung und -aneignung erheblich zu erhohen und zugleich wie sie durch die Ausubung kollektiver Macht auf lokaler und regionaler Ebene erfolgreich regulatorische Konsequenzen der Umweltrisiken beeinflussen konnen. Der empirische Teil des Beitrags basiert hauptsachlich auf qualitativen Interviews.
