This article deals with the effect of the Harmonic Mind Maps (HMM) in the comprehension of narrative texts of university students. To achieve this purpose, a quasi-experimental research was carried out within the quantitative approach. From a population of 1500 students belonging to the I Semester of university, a sample of 83 students was taken, and they were divided into two groups: one of control (43) and the other one experimental (40). For the collection of data, adaptations of the PISA Test, 2015 were used. After the application of the HMM, it is concluded that its use positively influences the comprehension of narrative texts.

SUMMARY: BACKGROUND This study sought to identify demographic characteristics of hospitalized patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in Los Angeles County for the purpose of implementing new preventive and educational programs. Another specific aim of the study was to characterize demographic and comorbid differences between patients with ALD and patients with pancreatitis, another alcohol-related disease.METHODS Analyses were performed on discharge data from all nonfederal short-stay hospitals within Los Angeles County, released for the year 1999 by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. Repeated hospital stays for ALD by the same patients were deleted from the data analysis based on individual identification numbers. For the analysis of medical costs of ALD, repeated hospital stays were included.RESULTS Primary diagnosis of ALD accounted for 1.2% of total deaths among hospitalized patients and was the eighth most common cause of death among diseases examined. Moreover, the fatality rate of primary ALD among ALD hospital visits was the second highest, behind septicemia. ALD was most prevalent in the middle-aged (45-65 years old) and low- to middle-income men. The age-standardized hospitalization rate of ALD was highest in Hispanic men (61.1 per 100,000 per year), whereas that of chronic pancreatitis, another common complication of alcohol abuse, was most prevalent in African American men.CONCLUSIONS Middle-aged Hispanic men with low- to middle-income status were identified as a high-risk group for ALD in Los Angeles County. The “magic” word complexity evokes a multitude of meanings that obscure its real sense. Here we try and generate a bottom-up reconstruction of the deep sense of complexity by looking at the convergence of different features shared by complex systems. We specifically focus on complexity in biology but stressing the similarities with analogous features encountered in inanimate and artefactual systems in order to track an integrative path toward a new “mainstream” of science overcoming the actual fragmentation of scientific culture.

Given current high market competitiveness, it is necessary to differentiate between products that perform the same function. For this objective, designer can recur to various sources of inspiration in the searching of the more attractive form during the conceptual design stage. One of these sources can be nature, which offers a large number of geometries and textures that can be used from a shape point of view to help the designer in the creative process. This work presents an agent-based approach for a design-aided tool to provide users with some ideas, beginning with simple parts/concepts, and then increasing the complexity level according to the answers offered by designer. The proposed paradigm was implemented using the JADE agent-based platform. In order to validate the platform, several product categories were offered to fifteen different users and a total of sixty design proposals were obtained with the aid of the platform. After evaluating all the proposals, twelve of the sixty designs were finally selected and modelled by a Computer-Aided Design software. The obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of using an agent-based approach to obtain an adaptive intelligent solution to the product conceptual design problem.

AIM: To establish a new procedure for 3D geometric reconstruction of the human cornea to obtain a solid model that represents a personalized and in vivo morphology of both the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces. This model is later analyzed to obtain geometric variables enabling the characterization of the corneal geometry and establishing a new clinical diagnostic criterion in order to distinguish between healthy corneas and corneas with keratoconus. METHOD: The method for the geometric reconstruction of the cornea consists of the following steps: capture and preprocessing of the spatial point clouds provided by the Sirius topographer that represent both anterior and posterior corneal surfaces, reconstruction of the corneal geometric surfaces and generation of the solid model. Later, geometric variables are extracted from the model obtained and statistically analyzed to detect deformations of the cornea. Abstract Asthma and rhinitis often co-exist in the same patient. Although some authors observed a higher prevalence and/or greater severity of asthma in patients with rhinitis, this view is not homogeneous and the debate continues. The aim of our study is to describe the prevalence of rhinitis in children and adolescents and to analyse their relationship with the prevalence of asthma. A multicentre study was conducted using the methodology of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). The target population of the study was all those school children aged 6–7 and 13–14 years from 6 of the main health catchment areas of Galicia (1.9 million inhabitants). The schools required were randomly selected, and all children in the targeted age ranges were included. Multiple logistic regression was used to obtain adjusted prevalence odds ratios (OR) between asthma symptoms of the schoolchildren and rhinitis prevalence. The results were adjusted for parental smoking habits, maternal education level, cat and dog exposure, and obesity. A total of 21,420 valid questionnaires were finally obtained. Rhinitis was associated with a significant increase in the prevalence of asthma in both age groups. The highest OR were 11.375 for exercise induced asthma (EIA) for children with recent rhinoconjunctivitis and 9.807 for children with recent rhinitis in 6–7 years old group. The prevalence OR’s are higher in EIA and severe asthmatics. Rhinitis in children and adolescents is associated with a higher prevalence and severity of asthma.

Background: The concern about massive haemorrhage associated with placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) prompts the routine use of general anaesthesia (GA) at many centres. We aimed to describe the effects of establishing a fixed multidisciplinary team (PAS team) on anaesthetic practices and clinical results. Methods: In this before-and-after study, we included patients with prenatal PAS suspicion treated between December 2011 and December 2019. We evaluated the anaesthetic techniques used before (Group 1) and after (Group 2) a PAS team was established. Results: Eighty-one patients were included. Neuraxial anaesthesia (NA) was used in 23.3% of group 1 patients and 76.4% of group 2 patients. Likewise, the frequency of conversion to GA after initial management with NA decreased from 14.3% in group 1 to 7.7% in group 2. Conclusions: The establishment of a PAS team is related to increased use of NA during the management of PAS patients.

In this article we study the a coupled system of fractional pantograph differential equations (FPDEs). Using degree theory, we state necessary conditions for the existence of solutions to a coupled system of fractional partial differential equations with non-local boundary conditions. Also using tools from non-linear analysis, we establish some stability results. We illustrate our theoretical results with a test problem.

Abstract In this paper, we establish some convergence results for a monotone nonexpansive mapping in a CAT(0) $\operatorname{CAT}(0)$ space. We prove the Δ- and strong convergence of the Mann iteration scheme. Further, we provide a numerical example to illustrate the convergence of our iteration scheme, and also, as an application, we discuss the solution of integral equation. Our results extend some of the relevant results.

In this article, for the analysis of Covid-19 progression in India, we present new insights to formulate a data-driven epidemic model and approximation algorithm using the real data on infection, recovery and death cases with respect to weather in the view of mathematical variables.

Modern hydrology relies on multiple sources of information combined with climatological, hydrological and glaciological data. These data can be collected through various sources such as private initiatives by companies, research programs, and both national and international organisms. They also vary by types, e.g., in situ measurements, satellite, reanalysis and simulated data. Recently the ANDEX research project, as a GEWEX regional program, was created to understand the processes related to the hydrological cycle and energy fluxes in the Andean region from Colombia to Patagonia. It is quite challenging to carry out this program given the complex orography and diversity of climates from tropical to sub-polar climates. This review article is a compilation of the various databases that are useful for hydrometeorological research in the South American Andes. The National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela and Argentina provide a large amount of data however the high-elevation areas are poorly instrumented and the number of stations varies greatly between the countries. National databases are only partially shared with the international bodies responsible for summarizing the existing data; this causes problems in term of data product assimilation. Across the entire continent, too few radiosondes are being used despite the fact that these data are crucial for validating and identifying problems in the atmospheric models. An increasing number of satellite data are available but it is difficult to assimilate them into the hydroclimatological models suited to the adjusted spatial and temporal resolutions. Specifically, for precipitation, we recommend merged products that account for the high spatial and temporal variability across the Andes. Finally, the international ANDEX program could be an excellent opportunity to increase the knowledge of the hydrological processes in the Andes.

In this work, we investigate the inverse problem of identifying a space-wise dependent source term of wave equation from the measurement on the boundary. On the basis of the optimal control framework, the inverse problem is transformed into an optimization problem. The existence and necessary condition of the minimizer for the cost functional are obtained. The projected gradient method and two-parameter model function method are applied to the minimization problem and numerical results are illustrated.

We consider Riemann–Liouville fractional differential equations with fractional-order derivative in the impulsive conditions. We study the existence of the mild solution by applying the Laplace transform method and (a,k)-regularized resolvent operator. We use the contraction mapping principle and fixed point theorem for condensing map to prove our existence results.

The present paper aimed to investigate how adolescents with pregnancy experience evaluate received support from their families in comparison with an adolescent group without pregnancy experience. 452 low income adolescents, both sex, aged 14 to 19 years old answered to a questionnaire. The results revealed that more girls (64.2 %) than boys (35.8 %) declared pregnancy experience, χ2 (2, n = 2617) = 48.32, p < .001. Moreover, it was observed that the group with pregnancy experience, in comparison with other group, revealed more perception on the family relationships safety, t (408) = -3.0, p < .01; mutual respect among family members in their homes, t (392) = -2.3, p < .05; and received stronger general support from their family, t (397) = -1,3, p < .05. These results are discussed.

We establish sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions for a class of initial value problem for impulsive fractional differential inclusions involving the Caputo fractional derivative. We consider the cases when the multivalued nonlinear term takes convex values as well as nonconvex values. The topological structure of the set of solutions is also considered.

The numerical approximation of the Caputo–Fabrizio fractional derivative with fractional order between 1 and 2 is proposed in this work. Using the transition from ordinary derivative to fractional derivative, we modified the RLC circuit model. The Crank–Nicolson numerical scheme was used to solve the modified model. We present the stability analysis of the numerical scheme for solving the modified equation and some numerical simulations for different values of the order of derivation.

We investigate the existence of solutions for boundary value problems of the third-order q-difference equations and inclusions. Our results are based on some standard fixed point theorems. In case of inclusion problem, the existence results are obtained for convex as well as nonconvex multi-valued maps. We also discuss the existence of extremal solutions for the inclusion problem.

Background: To compare fully covered bi-flanged metal stents (BFMS) and lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) for endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage/debridement of pancreatic walled-off necrosis (WON)., Methods: Patients with WON managed by EUS-guided therapy were divided into those who underwent: 1) drainage using BFMS; and 2) drainage using LAMS and scheduled direct endoscopic necrosectomy (DEN). Clinical success (resolution of the WON), technical success (successful stent placement), and adverse events (AEs) were evaluated., Results: 387 patients underwent WON endoscopic drainage, 205 using BFMS and 182 using LAMS. The clinical success in the BFMS or LAMS groups were similar (197 [96.1%] vs. 174 [95.6%]; P=0.81). Median number of procedures required for WON resolution was significantly lower in BFMS compared to LAMS (2 vs. 3, P<0.001). Technical success for stent placement was similar in BFMS and LAMS groups (203 [99%] vs. 180 [99%], P=0.90). Procedure-related AEs were similar in the BFMS and LAMS groups (19 [9.3%] vs. 20 [10.9%], P=0.61). Stent dysfunction with occluding debris was higher in the BFMS group compared to LAMS group (21 [10.2 %] vs. 11 [5.9%], P=0.04). The migration rate was higher in the BFMS group than in the LAMS group (15 [7.3%] vs. 3 [1.6%]; P<0.001). DEN was required in 23 [11.2%] patients in the BFMS group after lack of WON resolution by conservative means., Conclusion: BFMS with a "step-up approach" and LAMS with scheduled DEN are both safe and effective for EUS-guided drainage/debridement of WON., Competing Interests: Conflict of Interest: None, (Copyright: © 2021 Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology.)

Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a known cause of morbidity and mortality; however, evidence related to management of SSIs during pregnancy is sparse., Case: A 26-year-old female patient with an adnexal cystic lesion underwent laparotomy at 19 weeks of pregnancy. She experienced a late SSI 10 days after initial surgery, necessitating surgical debridement. She was treated with multiple surgical interventions for wound irrigations and wound closure assisted by a negative pressure wound therapy., Conclusion: Negative pressure wound therapy was used for treatment of an SSI during pregnancy without causing premature delivery or requiring a cesearan section.

Aim: To investigate whether tumor marker staining can improve the sensitivity of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) to diagnose pancreatic malignancy., Methods: Patients who underwent EUS-FNA were retrospectively identified. Each EUS-FNA specimen was evaluated by routine cytology and stained for tumor markers p53, Ki-67, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and CA19-9. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV), and positive and negative likelihood ratios (PLR and NLR) were calculated in order to evaluate the performance of each test to detect malignancy., Results: Sixty-one specimens had complete sets of stains, yielding 49 and 12 specimens from pancreatic adenocarcinomas and benign pancreatic lesions due to pancreatitis, respectively. Cytology alone had sensitivity and specificity of 41% and 100% to detect malignancy, respectively. In 46% of the specimens, routine cytology alone was deemed indeterminate. The addition of either p53 or Ki-67 increased the sensitivity to 51% and 53%, respectively, with perfect specificity, PPV and PLR (100%, 100% and infinite). Both stains in combination increased the sensitivity to 57%. While additional staining with CEA and CA19-9 further increased the sensitivity to 86%, the specificity, PPV and PLR were significantly reduced (at minimum 42%, 84% and 1, respectively). Markers in all combinations performed poorly as a negative test (NPV 26% to 47%, and NLR 0.27 and 0.70)., Conclusion: Immunohistochemical staining for p53 and Ki-67 can improve the sensitivity of EUS-FNA to diagnose pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
