Architectural historian John Harris sees the scheme to lease buildings widely regarded as the English Versailles as the equivalent of the French selling Les Invalides. The Royal Naval College, long used as a seaman's hospital, consists of 570,000 sq ft of awe-inspiring buildings designed principally by Wren and Hawksmoor. A vast baroque chapel and equally huge dining hall are its principal attractions.
