El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar el impacto de las variables materiales en la satisfacción de la democracia en América Latina. La hipótesis que guía esta investigación es que las variables materiales como la seguridad, la reducción de la pobreza, la equidad y el empleo tienen un impacto significativo en la satisfacción de la ciudadanía latinoamericana por sus regímenes democráticos. La investigación demostró que las variables materiales son significativas para entender la satisfacción de la ciudadanía por la democracia. Las variables materiales explican más del 30% de la satisfacción, o insatisfacción de la democracia en la región. Las variables más demostrativas en la satisfacción de la democracia son la brecha de pobreza, y luego la tasa de victimización.

Venezuela y Nicaragua tienen trayectorias socioeconómicas, políticas e institucionales muy diferentes entre sí. Sin embargo, en la contemporaneidad comparten la calificación de democracias mínimas por diversos análisis. Por ello, nos planteamos como objetivo de investigación analizar desde perspectiva histórica comparada la evolución de los sistemas políticos de Venezuela y Nicaragua, con énfasis en la configuración y gobierno del chavismo y del orteguismo. La metodología utilizada es el Análisis Histórico Comparado (AHC). En el artículo se afirma que si bien los rasgos de los fenómenos del populismo y del autoritarismo legalizado se superponen temporalmente, se observa que al principio de los períodos presidenciales de Chávez y Ortega resaltó el populismo y luego se fueron haciendo más autoritarios.

For the first time in the history of mankind several powers emerge simultaneously in different latitudes and can interact intensively. The Contemporary Global Order has presented significant changes among which highlight the absolute and relative decline of American power, and the emergence of new actors who have greater agency power in their international relations. One of these actors is the so-called BRICS that brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. For this reason the aim of this investigation is to analyzing the effective and potential power of the BRICS in the Contemporary Global Order. The methodology is it is situated inside the analytical eclecticism which is characterized by explaining a certain phenomenon without using a block of explanations sustained in a single tradition, but it takes and re-means the elements that it considers most pertinent for the case study. The article states that the BRICS do not claim or have the capacity to become hegemons. The objectives and capabilities of the BRICS have been especially notable in terms of international political economy, especially in the financial architecture, where China has its greatest power. The BRICS can promote an alternative to the existing game rules in the international system and promote a more plural world. They have the capacity to reform and build international economic institutions that allow a fairer distribution of material resources. They can curb unilateral global power interventions in regional affairs, framing interventions for humanitarian causes within multilateralism and the Responsibility to Protect. In terms of democracy and human rights, they will not make any contribution since their main actors, such as China and Russia, are examples of disrespect for these values.

An industrial wastewater regeneration treatment was successfully designed taking advantage of the amorphous silica adsorption properties, generated as an industrial waste in a geothermal power plant located in the city of Mexicali, Baja California. A tertiary wastewater process for the removal of heavy metals from a pre-treated galvanic industry effluent was designed by using a suspension-filtering system, employing previously purified amorphous silica (99.40% by weight) as an adsorbent of metal ions.The use of the amorphous silica allows to eliminate monovalent and divalent metal ions; 61.19% of silver, 96.28% of Cadmium and up to 98% of zinc, copper, nickel and lead; present in a standard prepared sample solution and between 39.56% and 84.22% of nickel, copper and zinc in a pre - treated industrial sample, achieving a good effluent quality with optimal chemical-physical conditions for its use. El Estado de bienestar es un elemento fundamental para alcanzar los objetivos universales de mayor estima: derechos humanos, democracia y cohesión social. En América Latina, el Estado de bienestar propiamente dicho es inexistente o precario. El objetivo de este artículo es evaluar los efectos que tienen las políticas gubernamentales de distribución de beneficios y cargas económicas en el Estado de bienestar de América Latina. El artículo es normativo y evaluativo. En el artículo se afirma que, cuando los términos contractuales de reciprocidad no expresan justicia redistributiva, como es el caso de América Latina, se generan condiciones favorables para el cuestionamiento no solo del sistema económico, sino también para el conjunto de las instituciones sociales, incluyendo la democracia.

A wastewater regeneration treatment was successfully designed by using modified amorphous silica as an adsorption agent, this ceramic material is generated as an industrial waste in a geothermal power plant located in the City of Mexicali, Baja California.A tertiary wastewater process for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater was designed by modifying purified amorphous silica (99.40% by weight) with low cost reagents as urea and sodium carbonate in a sol – gel reaction.The wastewater treatment with the urea modification allowed to eliminate 40% of chromium and zinc, 70% of nickel, 60% of copper and 90% of lead; while the carbonate modification allowed to remove 30% of nickel, 70 – 80% of chromium and copper and over 90% of aluminum and zinc; achieving a good effluent quality with optimal chemical-physical conditions for its re -use. Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungal pathogen that causes life-threatening infections in immunocompromised individuals. Its main virulence factor is an extracellular polysaccharide capsule whose structure, assembly and dynamics remain poorly understood. In this study, we apply improved protocols for sample preparation and recently-developed scanning microscopy techniques to visualize the ultrastructure of the C. neoformans capsule at high-resolution (up to 1 nm) and improved structural preservation. Although most capsule structures in nature consist of linear polymers, we show here that the C. neoformans capsule is a ‘microgel-like’ structure composed of branched polysaccharides. Moreover, we imaged the capsule-to-cell wall link, which is formed by thin fibers that branch out of thicker capsule filaments, and have one end firmly embedded in the cell wall structure. Together, our findings provide compelling ultrastructural evidence for a branched and complex capsule conformation, which may have important implications for the biological activity of the capsule as a virulence factor. NaLtural laminin matrices are formed on cell membranes by a cooperative process involving laminin self-polymerization and binding to cognate cellular receptors. In a cell-free system, lami- nm can self-polymerize, given that a minimal critical concentration is achieved. We have previously described that pH acidification renders self-polymerization independent of protein concentration. Here we studied the ultrastructure of acid-induced laminin polymers using electron and atomic force microscopies. Polymers presented the overall appearance of natural matrices and could be described as homogeneous polygonal sheets, presenting struts of 21 ± 5 and 86 ± 3 nm of height, which approximately correspond to the sizes of the~ short and the long arms of the molecule, respectively. The addition of fragment E3 (the distal two domains of the long arm) did not affect the polymerization in solution nor the formation of adsorbed matrices. On the other hand, the addition of fragment El', which contains two intact short arms, completely disrupted polymerization. These results indicate that acid-induced polymers, like natural ones, invo've only interactions between the short arms. The electrostatic surface map of laminin al LG4 -5 shows that acidification renders the distal end in the long arms exclusively positive, precluding homophylic interactions between them. Therefore, acidification reproduces in vitro, and at a physiological protein concentration, what receptor interaction does in the cellular context, namely, it prevents the long arm from disturbing formation of the homogeneous matrix involving the short arms only. The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological and chemical effect of in-office and at-home desensitising agents containing sodium fluoride (NaF) on eroded root dentine in vitro. Fifty bovine dentine samples were pre-eroded and randomised into five groups (n = 10): G1 (Control) - milli-Q water; G2 - fluoride varnish containing NaF 22,500 ppm; G3 - desensitising cream containing NaF 9,000 ppm associated with 20% nanohydroxyapatite; G4 - toothpaste with NaF 5,000 ppm associated to tricalcium phosphate; G5 - toothpaste containing NaF 900 ppm and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride (CPP-ACPF). The specimens were submitted to erosive challenge for three days. The analyses were performed using non-contact profilometry for volumetric (Sa) and linear roughness (Ra) followed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS). The data were analysed by Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests (α = 0.05). There was a significant reduction of Ra and Sa for the eroded samples from the G2 and G5 (p < 0.05) after an erosive challenge. The dentine surface topography pattern showed partially or totally occluded dentinal tubules after treatments, except in the control group. The control, G4 and G3 groups showed a reduction in the dentine inorganic content percentage of Ca (Calcium) and P (Phosphorus) minerals. The fluoride varnish and CPP-ACPF toothpaste were able to prevent morphological changes and were the only materials that showed the Ca and P content increased after treatment. Argentoleon irrigatus (Gerstaecker), is a common antlion species, but with sparse figures and incomplete location records in the literature, whose genitalia and larvae remained undescribed. Herein, the adults are redescribed and immatures (larvae and pupa) are described for the first time, providing images of internal and external characters, including both male and female genitalia. The examination and illustration of these characters allowed us to better understand the position and the limits of the genus Argentoleon Stange, within the tribe Brachynemurini, including the differentiation of the larval stages of the closely related genus Austroleon Banks. Additionally, the distribution of Ar. irrigatus is updated and a map is elaborated, resulting in seven new state records for Brazil and a new country record from Colombia. Some biological aspects are also analyzed, regarding rearing in captivity and natural habitat, providing resources for future ecologic and biogeographical analyses. Furthermore, we analyzed the type specimens of the extensive synonymic list of Ar. irrigatus concluding that Austroleon stictogaster Navás, is in fact a synonym of Austroleon immitis (Walker), and not of Ar. irrigatus as currently accepted. Overall, a full taxonomic actualization of Ar. irrigatus is presented.

Trichomonas vaginalis is the etiologic agent of trichomoniasis, the most common nonviral sexually transmitted infection worldwide, with an estimated 260 million new cases annually. T. vaginalis contains organelles common to all eukaryotic cells, uncommon cell structures such as hydrogenosomes, and a complex and elaborate cytoskeleton constituting the mastigont system. The mastigont system is mainly formed by several proteinaceous structures associated with basal bodies, the pelta-axostylar complex made of microtubules, and striated filaments named the costa and the parabasal filaments (PFs). Although the structural organization of trichomonad cytoskeletons has been analyzed using several techniques, observation using a new generation of scanning electron microscopes with a resolution exceeding 1 nm has allowed more detailed visualization of the three-dimensional organization of the mastigont system. In this study, we have investigated the cytoskeleton of T. vaginalis using a diverse range of scanning probe microscopy techniques, which were complemented by electron tomography and Fast-Fourier methods. This multi-modal approach has allowed us to characterize an unknown parabasal filament and reveal the ultrastructure of other striated fibers that have not been published before. Objective: To assess the in-vitro effect of single applications of CPP-ACP pastes and different fluoridated solutions on the prevention of dental caries around orthodontic brackets., Material and Methods: Tooth/bracket sets (n=65) were immersed in artificial saliva (1h at 37ºC) and randomly subjected to single applications (100µL; 1min) of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP emulsion), CPP-ACP with fluoride (CPP-ACPF emulsion), solutions of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) or sodium fluoride (NaF), or no treatment (CG). Multispecies biofilm (5 x 105 CFU/mL) was formed in the presence of 2% sucrose. After 24 h, the pH and the concentration of total soluble fluoride (TSF) were analyzed by culture medium. The presence of active white spot lesions (WSL) evaluated by macroscopic examination and the percent surface mineral loss (%SML) were analyzed. Also, the topography of enamel was detected by analysis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data was assessed by chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.05)., Results: Fluoride-containing compounds led to a smaller pH reduction than did CPP-ACP and CG (p<0.05). There was difference in TSF between the groups (p<0.05), denoted as TiF4> NaF > CPP-ACPF > CPP-ACP > CG. Regarding the presence of WSL and %SML, the NaF group obtained lower values (p<0.05), while TiF4 and CPP-ACPF were similar (p>0.05). SEM demonstrated that fluoride-free groups had a larger surface dissolution., Conclusion: Fluoridated groups including solutions and CPP-ACPF were more effective than CPP-ACP in reducing enamel demineralization around orthodontic brackets after a single application.

This crossover study explored the acute effect of a session of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on middle cerebral artery (MCA) variables such as cerebral blood velocity, pulsatility index (PI) and resistivity index (RI) through transcranial Doppler (TCD), and cognitive function (CF - verbal fluency and Digit Span) in healthy young adults. Participants (26 healthy young adults, 13 women, 24 ± 3 years) underwent two different randomized exercise sessions: (1) MICT (60 % heart rate reserve, HRR) and (2) HIIT (80 % HRR). MCA velocity, PI, RI, CF, and serum lactate were measured immediately before and after the sessions. HIIT demonstrated improved executive function/semantic fluency (20 %, p = 0.019), while both MICT and HIIT increased lactate (625 %, HIIT, p < 0.001, and 238 %, MICT, p < 0.001). Other assessments remained stable, except for reduced PI (p = 0.029) and RI (p = 0.023) after MICT, with no significant difference (pre-post for HIIT-MICT). Notably, cognition improvement correlated with lactate increase in HIIT (ρ = 0.436; p < 0.001). Executive function/semantic fluency increased after HIIT relative to MICT. The highly adaptable parasite Trypanosoma cruzi undergoes complex developmental stages to exploit host organisms effectively. Each stage involves the expression of specific proteins and precise intracellular structural organization. These morphological changes depend on key structures that control intracellular components' growth and redistribution. In trypanosomatids, the flagellar attachment zone (FAZ) connects the flagellum to the cell body and plays a pivotal role in cell expansion and structural rearrangement. While FAZ proteins are well-studied in other trypanosomatids, there is limited knowledge about specific components, organization, and function in T. cruzi . This study employed the CRISPR/Cas9 system to label endogenous genes and conduct deletions to characterize FAZ-specific proteins during epimastigote cell division and metacyclogenesis. In T. cruzi , these proteins exhibited distinct organization compared to their counterparts in T. brucei . TcGP72 is anchored to the flagellar membrane, while TcFLA-1BP is anchored to the membrane lining the cell body. We identified unique features in the organization and function of the FAZ in T. cruzi compared to other trypanosomatids. Deleting these proteins had varying effects on intracellular structures, cytokinesis, and metacyclogenesis. This study reveals specific variations that directly impact the success of cell division and differentiation of this parasite.

Techniques for local anesthesia of the tibial (TN) and superficial and deep fibular nerves (FNs) in horses are well established. Ultrasound-guided perineural blocks can identify the nerve location, reduce the anesthetic volume needed and avoid needle misplacement. The aim of this research was to compare the success of blind perineural injection technique (BLIND) to ultrasound-guided technique (USG). Fifteen equine cadaver hindlimbs were divided into two groups. Perineural injection of the TN and FNs was performed using a mixed solution of radiopaque contrast, saline and food dye. BLIND (n = 8) used 15 mL for the TN and 10 mL for each fibular nerve. USG (n = 7) used 3 mL for the TN and 1.5 mL for each fibular nerve. The limbs were radiographed immediately after injections and sectioned transversally to evaluate the diffusion and presence of the injectate adjacent to the TN and FNs. The presence of dye immediately adjacent to the nerves was considered a successful perineural injection. No statistically significant difference was observed between groups for success. Distal diffusion of injectate following perineural injection of the TN was significantly less for USG compared to BLIND. Proximal, distal and medial diffusion of injectate following perineural injection of FNs was significantly less for USG compared to BLIND. Coralline algae constitute one of the main groups of highly vulnerable calcified benthic organisms to ocean acidification. Although damaging effects of seawater acidification on the coralline algae skeleton have been widely demonstrated, the susceptibility to dissolution varies according to the Mg 2+ in the calcite lattice. Even though the Southwest Atlantic Ocean exhibits the world's largest rhodolith beds, which occupies 20,902 km 2 , there is no information regarding the coralline algae species mineralogy in this area. Here, we provide mineralogical data of twenty-four coralline algae species, examine the similarity in taxonomic groups, spatial occurrence and the vulnerability of these algae to seawater acidification. Mineralogy revealed that coralline algae skeletons were mainly composed of high-Mg calcite (> 70%) with minor presence of aragonite (< 30%) and dolomite (< 3%). There were no similarities between the skeletal mineralogy of taxonomic groups and sampling regions. Remarkably, the mean Mg-substitution of encrusting coralline algae from the Brazilian Shelf was 46.3% higher than global average. Because of the higher mean Mg-substitution in calcite compared with worldwide coralline algae, these algae from Southwest Atlantic Ocean would be highly susceptible to dissolution caused by the expected near-future ocean acidification and will compromise CaCO 3 net production across the Brazilian Shelf., (© 2022. Context: The side effects of bleaching products are still incompletely known., Aims: This work aims to evaluate the effects of bleaching regimens on colour variation, microstructure, roughness, composition and nanohardness of human dental enamel until 8 weeks., Settings and Design: : Twenty teeth were cross-sectioned to obtain eighty enamel fragments (50 × 50 mm) divided into four groups: CN (control Negative-artificial saliva), CP10 (10% carbamide peroxide), HP10 (10% hydrogen peroxide), and WS (whitening strips-10% hydrogen peroxide)., Methods and Material: Roughness (atomic force microscopy-AFM and 3-D surface scanning), morphology (confocal laser scanning microscopy-CLSM and AFM), hardness and elastic modulus (nanoindentation), and composition (Raman microspectroscopy) were analysed before the therapy and after 4 and 8 weeks. Colour measures were performed weekly., Statistical Analysis Used: : Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures (P < 0.05)., Results: Bleaching stabilizes after 3 weeks for HP10 and after 4 weeks for CP10 and WS. Roughness evaluation showed statistical difference for HP10 after 8 weeks for Sa and Sq, for HP10 and WS after 4 weeks and for CP10 after 8 weeks. The same occurred for hardness and elastic modulus. The morphological evaluation demonstrated the most significant effects after 8 weeks of treatment for HP10 and WS. Composition analysis revealed modifications in peaks related to the organic content spectra (protein) with an increase in detection after 4 weeks, followed by a decrease after 8 weeks., Conclusions: H 2 O 2 -based products caused morphological and compositional alterations on enamel., Competing Interests: None

Context: Despite the relevance of the sandwich technique, there are still doubts about the best adhesive strategy and surface treatment for glass ionomer cements (GICs)., Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the best surface treatment for GIC to ensure an effective and durable adhesion to resin, through micro-shear test, using an alternative method to build up test specimens., Subjects and Methods: Eighty GIC samples were divided into eight groups (n = 10) according to five surface treatments (none, etching, air drying, grinding, and grinding plus etching) and according to the adhesive system (conventional or self-etch). Five starch tubes were positioned on each sample, and a flowable composite was inserted generating 50 resin test bodies per group and a total of 400 tested areas. All specimens were submitted to the micro-shear test: half immediately and half after thermal cycling (10,000 cycles of 20 s each/5° and 55°C). All samples were analyzed to evaluate fracture. Representative samples were also analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's honest significant difference post hoc test (P <.05)., Results: The bond strengths in the thermal cycled specimens were lower and showed a statistically significant difference (P = 0). The "grinding" groups showed the highest bond strength., Conclusions: The alternative method to build up test specimens was effective and easy to execute. Cancer is a pathology characterized by increased cell progression and/or reduced programmed cell death. Melanoma shows a rapid increase in cell progression and its resistance to chemotherapy is associated with uncontrolled apoptosis and to mechanisms that increase the flow of the drug out of the cell. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the cell proliferation and cellular alterations in B16F10 murine melanoma. For that, four experimental groups were evaluated: the control group; laser group (ʎ = 660 ηm, 40 mW, 2.4 J/cm 2 ); photosensitizer group (solution containing methylene blue and toluidine blue 1:1-12.5 μg/mL); PDT group. The incubation time was 30 min. Fluorescence microscopy assays were performed without fixation with the DAPI, monodansylcadaverine (MDC), and dihydroethidium (DHE) probes. Cell proliferation was also determined at 24-h time. The tests were performed in triplicate and the statistical test used was ANOVA with Tukey post-test. The results demonstrate that the plasma membrane of the cells of all the experimental groups remained intact, ROS production and autophagy significantly increased (p < 0.0005 and p < 0.0071, respectively) only in the PDT group. The cell proliferation essay showed a reduction of 74.2% on the PDT group in relation to the control group. The present study demonstrated that oxidative stress promoted by photodynamic therapy may induce autophagy and consequently reduce cell proliferation in B16F10 melanoma.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the lethal potential of macrophages infected with Staphylococcus aureus after PACT (Photochemical Antimicrobial Chemotherapy) using phenothiazine derivatives (a solution containing 1:1 methylene blue and O toluidine blue) and laser (660 nm, 40 mW, 60 s, 12 J/cm 2 ) or LED (632 ± 2 nm, 145 mW, 40 s, 12 J/cm 2 ). Six experimental groups were evaluated: Control Group (untreated); Photosensitizer group (phenothiazines - 12.5 μg/mL); Laser Group; LED Group; Laser PACT Group; and LED PACT Group. The pre-irradiation time used in this study was 5 min. Macrophages and bacteria were cultured in specific culture media and/or allowed interaction between the cell types. Subsequently, tests were carried out to evaluate microbial proliferation, ROS production by macrophages and survival capacity of S. aureus after phagocytosis. Fluorescence microscopy assays were performed with the H 2 DCFDA probe, after PACT, at the initial time (0 h), 4-h and 12-h. The tests were performed in triplicate and the statistical test used was ANOVA with Tukey post-test. After PACT, a statistically significant difference (p > 0.0001) was observed between the microbial growth of the control group and the PACTs groups. Laser PACT and LED PACT groups presented, respectively, reductions of 84.2% and 81.5% when compared to control and 53.3% and 46% when compared to the photosensitizer group. It is concluded that the therapeutic protocols presented in this study increased the phagocytic capacity, the response rate of the phagocytes and the consequent reduction of the numbers of S. aureus for both PACT protocols, however the increase in ROS production was only observed in the group irradiated with Laser light., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Background: Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium associated with periodontal disease. Some oral bacteria, like Porphyromonas gingivalis, evade the host immune response by inhibiting inflammation. On the other hand, F. nucleatum triggers inflammasome activation and release of danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in infected gingival epithelial cells., Methods: In this study, we characterized the pro-inflammatory response to F. nucleatum oral infection in BALB/c mice. Western blots and ELISA were used to measure cytokine and DAMP (HMGB1) levels in the oral cavity after infection. Histology and flow cytometry were used to observe recruitment of immune cells to infected tissue and pathology., Results: Our results show increased expression and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines during infection. Furthermore, we observe that F. nucleatum infection leads to recruitment of macrophages in different tissues of the oral cavity. Infection also contributes to osteoclast recruitment, which could be involved in the observed bone resorption., Conclusions: Overall, our findings suggest that F. nucleatum infection rapidly induces inflammation, release of DAMPs, and macrophage infiltration in gingival tissues and suggest that osteoclasts may drive bone resorption at early stages of the inflammatory process., (Copyright © 2018 Chang Gung University. Approximately half of the Padina (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) species mineralize aragonite needles over the adaxial thallus surface, where mineral bands are interspersed with nonmineralized regions along the thallus from the apical to basal end. However, this calcification pattern and the related algal properties are not well understood. Therefore, this work was performed to elucidate a potential role of cell walls in the inhibition/induction of mineralization in the brown alga Padina gymnospora. In a comparison of specific thallus regions, differences were identified in the cellulose distribution, microfibrils arrangement and thickness, distribution and abundance of phenolic substances, and physical differences among the surfaces of the thallus (deformation, adhesion, topography, and nano-rugosity). In vitro mineralization assays indicated that phenolic substances are strong modulators of calcium carbonate crystals growth. In addition, de novo mineralization assays over cell wall surfaces that were used as templates, even without cellular activity, indicated that the cell wall remains a key factor in the induction/inhibition of mineralization. Statement of Problem: Universal adhesives combine silane and various monomers in a single bottle to make them more versatile. Their adhesive performance is unclear., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the effects of an additional silane application before using a universal adhesive on the adhesion between a disilicate glass ceramic and a composite resin by using a microshear bond strength test (μSBS) and fracture analysis immediately and after thermocycling., Material and Methods: One hundred lithium disilicate glass ceramic disks were divided into 10 groups for bond strength testing according to the following 3 surface treatments: silane application (built-in universal adhesive or with additional application), adhesive (Adper Single Bond Plus [SB, 3M ESPE], Scotchbond Universal Adhesive [U, 3M ESPE], and mixed U with Dual Cure Activator [DCA, 3M ESPE]); or thermocycling (half of the specimens were thermocycled 10000 times). After surface treatment, 5 resin cylinders were bonded to each disk and submitted to a μSBS test. The failure mode was analyzed under a stereomicroscope and evaluated by scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The microbial synthesis of nanoparticles is a green chemistry approach that combines nanotechnology and microbial biotechnology. The aim of this study was to obtain silver nanoparticles (SNPs) using aqueous extract from the filamentous fungus Fusarium oxysporum as an alternative to chemical procedures and to evaluate its antifungal activity. SNPs production increased in a concentration-dependent way up to 1 mM silver nitrate until 30 days of reaction. Monodispersed and spherical SNPs were predominantly produced. After 60 days, it was possible to observe degenerated SNPs with in additional needle morphology. The SNPs showed a high antifungal activity against Candida and Cryptococcus , with minimum inhibitory concentration values ≤ 1.68 µg/mL for both genera. Morphological alterations of Cryptococcus neoformans treated with SNPs were observed such as disruption of the cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane and lost of the cytoplasm content. This work revealed that SNPs can be easily produced by F. oxysporum aqueous extracts and may be a feasible, low-cost, environmentally friendly method for generating stable and uniformly sized SNPs. Finally, we have demonstrated that these SNPs are active against pathogenic fungi, such as Candida and Cryptococcus.

Objective: To discuss the main aspects of co-infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus in the city of Taubaté (located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil) in 2001 and 2002., Methods: This study presents epidemiological data on tuberculosis cases occurring in Taubaté in 2001 and 2002., Results: Of the 250 cases of tuberculosis analyzed, 70 (28%) presented human immunodeficiency virus seropositivity, 95 (38%) presented human immunodeficiency virus seronegativity, and 85 (34%) were patients who had not been submitted to serological testing. In the first group (tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus seropositivity), males from 30 to 40 years of age predominated, the most common clinical presentation of tuberculosis was pulmonary (65.71%), and the cure rate was 59.38%. In the group of tuberculosis patients presenting human immunodeficiency virus seronegativity, males from 30 to 40 years of age also predominated, the most common clinical presentation of tuberculosis was also pulmonary (70.55%), and the cure rate was 81.63%., Conclusion: We conclude that the human immunodeficiency virus plays an important role in the epidemiology of tuberculosis. Therefore, serological testing for human immunodeficiency virus should be carried out when a diagnosis of tuberculosis is made.

Unlabelled: To evaluate the clinical impact of the use of an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) against Chlamydia as a method to identify patients with tubal factor infertility (TFI) in a population of infertile Mexican women., Methods: This was a retrospective analysis made on 100 patients attending the infertility clinic who underwent laparoscopy. Blood and cervical samples were collected during the clinical examination. The presence of anti-Chlamydia trachomatis IgG antibodies was documented using the IFA test, and the presence of active chlamydial infection was evaluated using the nucleic acid hybridization assay., Results: The sensitivity and specificity values of the IFA test to identify patients with periadnexal adhesions were 45% and 82%, respectively; and the positive predictive and negative predictive values were 42% and 84%, and the positive and negative likelihood ratios were 2.5 and 0.7, respectively., Conclusion: The IFA test was not usable for the identification of patients with periadnexal adhesions as a cause of infertility in this population. However, it could be useful as a screening test to decide which patients might receive laparoscopic treatment. Furthermore, it could be useful for identifying patients with active chlamydial infections in the upper genital tract, but a study with a larger sample needs to be done.
