This study examined the role of intermittent illumination/dark conditions coupled with MnO2-ammendments to regulate the mobility of As and Fe in flooded arsenic-enriched soils. Addition of MnO2 particles with intermittent illumination led to a pronounced increase in the reductive-dissolution of Fe(III) and As(V) from flooded soils compared to a corresponding dark treatments. A higher MnO2 dosage (0.10 vs 0.02 g) demonstrated a greater effect. Over a 49-day incubation, maximum Fe concentrations mobilized from the flooded soils amended with 0.10 and 0.02 g MnO2 particles were 2.39 and 1.85-fold higher than for non-amended soils under dark conditions. The corresponding maximum amounts of mobilized As were at least 92 % and 65 % higher than for non-amended soils under dark conditions, respectively. Scavenging of excited holes by soil humic/fulvic compounds increased mineral photoelectron production and boosted Fe(III)/As(V) reduction in MnO2-amended, illuminated soils. Additionally, MnO2 amendments shifted soil microbial community structure by enriching metal-reducing bacteria (e.g., Anaeromyxobacter, Bacillus and Geobacter) and increasing c-type cytochrome production. This microbial diversity response to MnO2 amendment facilitated direct contact extracellular electron transfer processes, which further enhanced Fe/As reduction. Subsequently, the mobility of released Fe(II) and As(III) was partially attenuated by adsorption, oxidation, complexation and/or coprecipitation on active sites generated on MnO2 surfaces during MnO2 dissolution. These results illustrated the impact of a semiconducting MnO2 mineral in regulating the biogeochemical cycles of As/Fe in soil and demonstrated the potential for MnO2-based bioremediation strategies for arsenic-polluted soils.

Infectious respiratory diseases such as the current COVID-19 have caused public health crises and interfered with social activity. Given the complexity of these novel infectious diseases, their dynamic nature, along with rapid changes in social and occupational environments, technology, and means of interpersonal interaction, respiratory protective devices (RPDs) play a crucial role in controlling infection, particularly for viruses like SARS-CoV-2 that have a high transmission rate, strong viability, multiple infection routes and mechanisms, and emerging new variants that could reduce the efficacy of existing vaccines. Evidence of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmissions further highlights the importance of a universal adoption of RPDs. RPDs have substantially improved over the past 100 years due to advances in technology, materials, and medical knowledge. However, several issues still need to be addressed such as engineering performance, comfort, testing standards, compliance monitoring, and regulations, especially considering the recent emergence of pathogens with novel transmission characteristics. In this review, we summarize existing knowledge and understanding on respiratory infectious diseases and their protection, discuss the emerging issues that influence the resulting protective and comfort performance of the RPDs, and provide insights in the identified knowledge gaps and future directions with diverse perspectives.

Minerals are ubiquitous in the natural environment and have close contact with microorganisms. In various scenarios, microorganisms that harbor extracellular electron transfer (EET) capabilities have evolved a series of beneficial strategies through the mutual exchange of electrons with extracellular minerals to enhance survival and metabolism. These electron exchange interactions are highly relevant to the cycling of elements in the epigeosphere and have a profound significance in bioelectrochemical engineering applications. In this review, we summarize recent advances related to the effects of different minerals that facilitate the EET process and discuss the underlying mechanisms and outlooks for future applications. The promotional effects of minerals arise from their redox-active ability, electrical conductivity and photocatalytic capability. In mineral-promoted EET processes, various responses have concurrently arisen in microorganisms, such as stretching of electrically conductive pili (e-pili), upregulated expression of outer-membrane cytochromes (Cyts) and production of specific enzymes, and secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). This review synthesizes the understanding of electron exchange mechanisms between microorganisms and minerals and highlights potential applications in development of renewable energy production and pollutant remediation, which are topics of particular significance to future exploitation of biotechnology.

Recycled manure solids (RMSs) are widely utilised as beddings due to their economic and environmentally friendly features. Internal change in RMSs plays a vital role in the stable operation and management of beddings. However, the internal microenvironment of various manure beddings has not been fully reported. Therefore, we evaluated the physicochemical properties, internal gases and changes in the microbial community of the in situ fermentation beds, which were prefermented by cow manure with sawdust (FSD), straw (FST) and sawdust–straw mixture (FM), at a farm in Jiangsu, China, from June to September 2022. The results indicated that the FSD and FM beds were more capable of degrading organic matter (OM), accumulating total nitrogen and processing a more stable pH environment. FSD bed promoted the conversion of nitrate–nitrogen and ammonium–nitrogen (NH4+-N). Different treatments and times had significant effects on bacterial and fungal communities. FSD enriched Chloroflexi, and FST enriched Actinobacteriota in the early stage, while FM enriched Proteobacteria in the late stage. Bacterial communities were more sensitive to NH4+-N and OM, while fungal communities were more sensitive to temperature and pH. FSD had potential advantages concerning N conversion and C emission reduction. The results of the study revealed the microenvironmental dynamics during bedding use, providing a theoretical basis for the use of a compost bedding system for managing recycled dairy manure.

The surface modification of aramid fiber plain fabric (PPTA) was conducted through phthalic anhydride treatment and anhydrous aluminum chloride (AlCl3) catalysis, aiming to enhance the interfacial bonding strength between aramid fiber fabric and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) resin. The surface morphologies and structures of PPTA fiber before and after modification were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The mechanical properties of the PPTA/DGEBA composite were evaluated using a universal mechanical testing machine. The results demonstrate that when the concentration of phthalic anhydride is 0.3 mol/L, the tensile strength, bending strength and interlaminar shear strength of PPTA/DGEBA composites reach the maximum value, which are increased by 17.94%, 44.18%, and 15.94% compared with the unmodified sample, respectively. After a 0.5-h catalytic modification, the PPTA/DGEBA composites exhibited significantly enhanced tensile strength, bending strength, and interlaminar shear strength, achieving respective increments of 32.28%, 24.91%, and 29.10% compared to the modified samples without catalyst addition. Moreover, the overall mechanical properties of the aramid fiber fabrics and composites were substantially improved, which are more suitable for structural applications.

Under abiotic stress, plant root exudates can improve plant growth performance. However, studies on the effect of root exudates on the stress resistance of another plant are insufficient. In this study, root exudates (REs) were extracted from Suaeda glauca to explore their effect on alfalfa seedlings under salt stress. The results showed that the plant height and fresh weight of alfalfa significantly increased by 47.72% and 53.39% after 7 days of RE treatment at a 0.4% NaCl concentration. Under 1.2% salt stress, REs reduced the Malondialdehyde content in alfalfa by 30.14% and increased the activity of its antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and catalase) and the content of its osmotic regulators (soluble sugar and proline) by 60.68%, 52%, 45.67%, and 38.67%, respectively. Soil enzyme activity and the abundance of soil-beneficial bacteria were increased by REs. Spearman analysis showed that urease and neutral phosphatase were related to the richness of beneficial bacteria. Redundancy analysis confirmed that urease affected the composition of the soil bacterial community. The partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) revealed that REs had a direct positive effect on alfalfa growth under salt stress by regulating the plant’s injury and antioxidant systems, and the soil bacterial community had an indirect positive effect on alfalfa growth through soil enzyme activity.
