Mineral ions (mainly calcium ions) from sugarcane juice can be trapped inside the heating tubes of evaporators and vacuum boiling pans, and calcium ions are precipitated. Consequently, sugar productivity and yield are negatively affected. Calcium ions can be removed from sugarcane juice using adsorption. This paper described the experimental condition for the batch adsorption performance of rosin-based macroporous cationic resins (RMCRs) for calcium ions. The kinetics of adsorption was defined by the pseudo-first-order model, and the isotherms of calcium ions followed the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximal monolayer adsorption capacity of calcium ions was 37.05 mg·g−1 at a resin dosage of 4 g·L−1, pH of 7.0, temperature of 75 °C, and contact time of 10 h. It appeared that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic based on the thermodynamic parameters. The removal rate of calcium ions in remelt syrup by RMCRs was 90.71%. Calcium ions were effectively removed from loaded RMCRs by 0.1 mol·L−1 of HCl, and the RMCRs could be recycled. The dynamic saturated adsorption capacity of RMCRs for calcium ions in remelt syrup was 37.90 mg·g−1. These results suggest that RMCRs are inexpensive and efficient adsorbents and have potential applications for removing calcium ions in remelt syrup.

HSP60, a well-known mitochondrial chaperone, is essential for mitochondrial homeostasis. HSP60 deficiency causes dysfunction of the mitochondria and is lethal to animal survival. Here, we used freshwater planarian as a model system to investigate and uncover the roles of HSP60 in tissue regeneration and homeostasis. HSP60 protein is present in all types of cells in planarians, but it is relatively rich in stem cells and head neural cells. Knockdown of HSP60 by RNAi causes head regression and the loss of regenerating abilities, which is related to decrease in mitotic cells and inhibition of stem cell-related genes. RNAi-HSP60 disrupts the structure of the mitochondria and inhibits the mitochondrial-related genes, which mainly occur in intestinal tissues. RNAi-HSP60 also damages the integrity of intestinal tissues and downregulates intestine-expressed genes. More interestingly, RNAi-HSP60 upregulates the expression of the cathepsin L-like gene, which may be the reason for head regression and necrotic-like cell death. Taking these points together, we propose a model illustrating the relationship between neoblasts and intestinal cells, and also highlight the essential role of the intestinal system in planarian regeneration and tissue homeostasis.

The separation and extraction of chrysin from active ingredients of natural products are of great significance, but the existing separation and extraction methods have certain drawbacks. Here, chrysin molecularly imprinted nanofiber membranes (MINMs) were prepared by means of electrospinning using chrysin as a template and polyvinyl alcohol and natural renewable resource rosin ester as membrane materials, which were used for the separation of active components in the natural product. The MINM was examined using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption performance, adsorption kinetics, adsorption selectivity, and reusability of the MINM were investigated in static adsorption experiments. The analysis results show that the MINM was successfully prepared with good morphology and thermal stability. The MINM has a good adsorption capacity for chrysin, showing fast adsorption kinetics, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 127.5 mg·g−1, conforming to the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In addition, the MINM exhibited good selectivity and excellent reusability. Therefore, the MINM proposed in this paper is a promising material for the adsorption and separation of chrysin.

Disease spreading in multi-layer complex networks often spreads among multiple populations with the help of media. In order to reveal the cross-layer spreading characteristics of diseases and control the cross-layer spreading of diseases by analyzing the inter-layer coupling mechanism in multi-layer complex networks, this paper proposes and establishes three kinds of three-layer disease spreading models based on SIS spreading mechanism, and analyzes the influence of spreading conditions, spreading speed, and diffusion range on disease spreading and corresponding immunization strategies. It is deduced theoretically that the spreading threshold of global network is relatively lower than that of a single-layer network. As the intermediary layer of the global network bridge, the strong coupling is more likely to cause the network to show multi-peak characteristic, and the influence of multi-peak transformation on the spreading speed is higher than that of the network generation mechanism. The immune strategy of isolating middle-layer nodes can effectively inhibit the spread of diseases. The research results of this paper are helpful to understand the spreading characteristics of various information in the real world.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of an aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-contaminated diet treated with ammonia on the diet detoxification and growth performance, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen utilization, and blood metabolites in sheep. Twenty-four female mutton sheep with an initial body weight of 50 ± 2.5 kg were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) control diet (C); (2) aflatoxin diet (T; control diet supplemented with 75 μg of AFB1/kg of dry matter); and (3) ammoniated diet (AT; ammoniated aflatoxin diet). The results showed decreases (p < 0.05) in average daily feed intake, nutrient digestibility of dry matter, crude protein and ether extract, and retained nitrogen, and an increase (p < 0.05) in urine nitrogen excretion in sheep fed diet T compared with those fed the other diets. In comparison to C and AT, feeding T decreased (p < 0.05) the concentrations of total protein, immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G, immunoglobulin M, superoxide dismutase, and total antioxidants and increased (p < 0.05) the concentrations of alanine amino transferase, malondialdehyde, and interleukin-6. In summary, ammonia treatment has the potential to decrease the concentration of AFB1 and alleviate the adverse effects of AFB1.

The process by which bacteria sense environmental cues to regulate their virulence is complex. Several studies have focused on regulating the expression of the locus of enterocyte effacement pathogenicity island in the typical gut pathogenic bacterium, O157.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribute to cellular redox environment and serve as signaling molecules. Excessive ROS can lead to oxidative stress that are involved in a broad spectrum of physiological and pathological conditions. Stem cells have unique ROS regulation while cancer cells frequently show a constitutive oxidative stress that is associated with the invasive phenotype. Antioxidants have been proposed to forestall tumor progression while targeted oxidants have been used to destroy tumor cells. However, the delicate beneficial range of ROS levels for stem cells and tumor cells under distinct contexts remains elusive. Here, we used Drosophila midgut intestinal stem cell (ISCs) as an in vivo model system to tackle this question. The ROS levels of ISCs remained low in comparison to that of differentiated cells and increased with ageing, which was accompanied by elevated proliferation of ISCs in aged Drosophila. Neither upregulation nor downregulation of ROS levels significantly affected ISCs, implicating an intrinsic homeostatic range of ROS in ISCs. Interestingly, we observed similar moderately elevated ROS levels in both tumor-like ISCs induced by Notch (N) depletion and extracellular matrix (ECM)-deprived ISCs induced by β-integrin (mys) depletion. Elevated ROS levels further promoted the proliferation of tumor-like ISCs while reduced ROS levels suppressed the hyperproliferation phenotype; on the other hand, further increased ROS facilitated the survival of ECM-deprived ISCs while reduced ROS exacerbated the loss of ECM-deprived ISCs. However, N- and mys-depleted ISCs, which resembled metastatic tumor cells, harbored even higher ROS levels and were subjected to more severe cell loss, which could be partially prevented by ectopic supply of antioxidant enzymes, implicating a delicate pro-surviving and proliferating range of ROS levels for ISCs. Taken together, our results revealed stem cells can differentially respond to distinct ROS levels under various conditions and suggested that the antioxidant-based intervention of stem cells and tumors should be formulated with caution according to the specific situations.

The giant triton snail (Charonia tritonis), an endangered gastropod species of ecological and economic importance, is widely distributed in coral reef ecosystems of the Indo-West Pacific region and the tropical waters of the South China Sea. Limited research on molecular mechanisms can be conducted because the complete genomic information on this species is unavailable. Hence, we performed transcriptome sequencing of the C. tritonis foot muscle and mantle using the Illumina HiSeq sequencing platform. In 109,722 unigenes, we detected 7,994 (3,196 up-regulated and 4,798 down-regulated) differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from the C. tritonis foot muscle and mantle transcriptomes. These DEGs will provide valuable resources to improve the understanding of molecular mechanisms involved in biomineralization of C. tritonis. In the Gene Ontology (GO) database, DEGs were clustered into three main categories (biological processes, molecular functions, and cellular components) and were involved in 50 functional subcategories. The top 20 GO terms in the molecular function category included sulfotransferase activity, transferring sulfur-containing groups, and calcium ion binding, which are terms considered to be related to biomineralization. In KEGG classifications, transcriptomic DEGs were mainly enriched in glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis-chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate, and sulfur metabolism pathway, which may be related to biomineralization. The results of qPCR showed that three of the eight genes examined were significantly up-regulated in the mantle. The phylogenetic tree of BMP1 suggested a significant divergence between homologous genes in C. tritonis. Our results improve the understanding of biomineralization in C. tritonis and provide fundamental transcriptome information to study other molecular mechanisms such as reproduction.

Testicular torsion is an acute urological emergency condition that occurs due to obstruction of blood flow to the testicles which may result in ischemia and loss of testicular functions. This study examined the protective effects of Proxeed Plus (PP), a dietary supplement on testicular ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injured rats using oxidative stress markers, hormonal levels, apoptotic parameters, histological and immunohistochemistry analysis at 4 h and after 7 days of reperfusion. The protective treatment of the I/R injured rats with PP at 1000 and 5000 mg/kg body weight (bw) resulted in significant increases in the serum and tissue antioxidative defense capacities (superoxide dismutase, reduced glutathione, catalase, glutathione-s-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase), sex hormones (luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and testosterone), also reduce pro-oxidative markers (malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide), serum iNOS and apoptotic parameters (Caspase -3 and Caspase -9) in comparison to the results detected in the I/R untreated rats. It was also observed that PP ameliorated histological changes of I/R injured rats; increased spermatogenetic activity, seminiferous tubular diameter, Leydig cell mass, and reduced expressions of testicular inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Therefore, the therapeutic use of Proxeed Plus could be considered a promising approach in averting testicular damage against I/R injury.

This study aims to explore the freight demand network spatial patterns in six provinces of central China from the perspective of the spread of the epidemic and the freight imbalance and breakout. To achieve this purpose, the big data of "cart search" demand information provided by small and medium freight enterprises on the freight information platform are analyzed. 343,690 pieces of freight demand big data on the freight information platform and Python, ArcGIS, UCINET, and Gephi software are used. The results show that: (1) The choke-point of unbalanced freight demand network is Wuhan, and the secondary choke-points are Hefei and Zhengzhou. (2) In southern China, a chain reaction circle of freight imbalance is formed with Wuhan, Hefei, and Nanchang as the centers. In northern China, a chain reaction circle of freight imbalance is formed with Zhengzhou and Taiyuan as the centers. (3) The freight demand of the six provinces in central China exhibits typical characteristics of long tail distribution with large span and unbalanced distribution. (4) The import and export of freight in different cities vary greatly, and the distribution is unbalanced. This study indicates the imbalance difference, chain reaction, keys and hidden troubles posed by the freight demand network. From the perspectives of freight transfer breakout, freight balance breakout, freight strength breakout, and breakout of freight periphery cities, we propose solutions to breakouts in the freight market in six provinces of central China in the post-epidemic era.

The borehole sealing material is one of the key factors affecting the gas drainage effect of a borehole. This paper takes the compressive strength, fluidity, expansion rate, and setting time of the sealing material as the main research indicators and explores the influence of each key influencing factor on the performance of the high-fluid sealing material through the single factor experiment method. Using the Design-Expert 8.0.5 Trial software designed orthogonal experiments and establishing a quadratic model between liquidity and each test factor, which showed the impact of each key factor on the fluidity. Finally, by adjusting the amount of admixtures, the optimal ratio of high-fluidity borehole sealing materials was obtained. The results showed that the key factors had the following order of significance: water–cement reducing agent>water–cement ratio>retarder>expansion agent. With the water-cement ratio and the amount of water reducing agent increase, the fluidity of the material will increase; and with the increase of the retarder and expansion agent, the fluidity will decrease. In actual use, the fluidity is the main factor, but the expansion rate, compressive strength, and setting time are also considered. The optimal percentages were found for the high-fluidity borehole sealing material: a water-cement ratio of 1, along with 0.03% retarder, 0.5% water reducer, and 8% expansion agent. These research results could provide a reference for improving the performance of gas drainage borehole sealing materials and enhancing the effect of gas drainage.

Abstract Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a metabolic and reproductive disease, is frequently associated with type 2 diabetes. We have demonstrated activating autoantibodies (AAb) directed toward the second extracellular loop (ECL2) of the gonadotropin‐releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR) are present in a significant subgroup of PCOS patients. It is unclear whether GnRHR‐AAb can induce peripheral tissue insulin resistance (IR) in animal models. Sixteen rats were divided equally into a GnRHR ECL2 peptide‐immunized group (IMM group) and a control group (CON group). Sera GnRHR‐AAb titer, luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone (T) were higher in IMM rats compared with CON rats. No significant difference in fasting blood glucose was observed between the two groups. The development of new strategies to turn achiral artificial hosts into highly desirable chiral receptors is a crucial challenge in order to advance the fields of asymmetric transformations and enantioselective sensing. Over the past few years, C3 symmetrical cages have emerged as interesting class of supramolecular hosts that have been reported as efficient scaffolds for chirality dynamics (such as generation, control, and transfer). On this basis, this mini review, which summarizes the existing examples of chirality control and propagation in tripodal supramolecular cages, aims at discussing the benefits and perspectives of this approach.

Fatty acid composition is a key factor affecting the flavor and quality of goat milk. CircRNAs are now recognized as important regulators of transcription, and they play an important role in the control of fatty acid synthesis. Thus, understanding the regulatory mechanisms controlling this process in ruminant mammary glands is of great significance. In the present study, mammary tissue from dairy goats during early lactation and the dry period (nonlactating) were collected and used for high-throughput sequencing. Compared to levels during the dry period, the expression level of circ003429 during early lactation was lower (12.68-fold downregulated). In isolated goat mammary epithelial cells, circ003429 inhibited the synthesis of triglycerides (TAG) and decreased the content of unsaturated fatty acids (C16:1, C18:1, and C18:2), indicating that this circRNA plays an important role in regulating lipid synthesis. A binding site for miR-199a-3p in the circ003429 sequence was detected, and a dual-luciferase reporter system revealed that circ003429 targets miR-199a-3p. Overexpression of circ003429 (pcDNA-circ003429) downregulated the abundance of miR-199a-3p. In contrast, overexpression of miR-199a-3p increased TAG content and decreased mRNA abundance of Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) (a target gene of miR-199a-3p), and TAG content was decreased and mRNA abundance was increased in response to overexpression of circ003429. These results indicate that circ003429 alleviates the inhibitory effect of miR-199a-3p on the mRNA abundance of YAP1 by binding miR-199a-3p, resulting in subsequent regulation of the synthesis of TAG and unsaturated fatty acids.

Glycosylation is the most common form of post-translational modification of proteins, critically affecting their structure and function. Using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry for high-resolution site-specific quantification of glycopeptides coupled with high-throughput artificial intelligence-powered data processing, we analyzed differential protein glycoisoform distributions of 597 abundant serum glycopeptides and nonglycosylated peptides in 50 individuals who had been seriously ill with COVID-19 and in 22 individuals who had recovered after an asymptomatic course of COVID-19. As additional comparison reference phenotypes, we included 12 individuals with a history of infection with a common cold coronavirus, 16 patients with bacterial sepsis, and 15 healthy subjects without history of coronavirus exposure. We found statistically significant differences, at FDR < 0.05, for normalized abundances of 374 of the 597 peptides and glycopeptides interrogated between symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. Similar statistically significant differences were seen when comparing symptomatic COVID-19 patients to healthy controls (350 differentially abundant peptides and glycopeptides) and common cold coronavirus seropositive subjects (353 differentially abundant peptides and glycopeptides). Among healthy controls and sepsis patients, 326 peptides and glycopeptides were found to be differentially abundant, of which 277 overlapped with biomarkers that showed differential expression between symptomatic COVID-19 cases and healthy controls. Among symptomatic COVID-19 cases and sepsis patients, 101 glycopeptide and peptide biomarkers were found to be statistically significantly abundant. Using both supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, we found specific glycoprotein profiles to be strongly predictive of symptomatic COVID-19 infection. LASSO-regularized multivariable logistic regression and K-means clustering yielded accuracies of 100% in an independent test set and of 96% overall, respectively. Our findings are consistent with the interpretation that a majority of glycoprotein modifications observed which are shared among symptomatic COVID-19 and sepsis patients likely represent a generic consequence of a severe systemic immune and inflammatory state. However, there are glycoisoform changes that are specific and particular to severe COVID-19 infection. These may be representative of either COVID-19-specific consequences or susceptibility to or predisposition for a severe course of the disease. Our findings support the potential value of glycoproteomic biomarkers in the biomedical understanding and, potentially, the clinical management of serious acute infectious conditions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many college students in developing countries to engage in online learning for the first time, and the sudden transit has raised concerns regarding students’ competencies for, perception of, and attitude towards online learning. To address those concerns, this study measured three essential constructs of online learning (self-regulated learning, perceived presences, and learning motivation) based on a national survey in China (N = 12,826) and employed structural equation modeling to investigate their intertwined relationship. The study results reveal that (1) college students’ academic achievement cannot effectively predict their self-regulated learning in an online learning context; (2) self-regulation can be further differentiated into general and task-specific strategies with a varying impact on three types of presences; (3) online learning motivation is best predicted by cognitive presence, followed by social presence and teaching presence; and (4) the path of task-specific self-regulated learning → cognitive presence → online learning motivation generates the largest positive compound effect. Implications for online teaching and learning practice are also discussed through the stakeholder perspectives of students, teachers, and platform developers.

ABSTRACT The objective was to analyze the longitudinal distribution, epidemiological characteristics, and local prevention and control measures of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in six cities in Henan Province, China, from 21 January 2020 to 17 June 2020: Xinyang City (including Gushi County), Nanyang City (including Dengzhou City), Zhumadian City (including Xincai County), Zhengzhou City (including Gongyi City), Puyang City, and Anyang City (including Hua County). Data were collected and analyzed through the COVID-19 information published on the official websites of the health commissions in the six selected cities of Henan Province. As of 17 June 2020, the cumulative incidence rate of COVID-19 in Henan Province was 1.33/100,000, the cumulative cure rate was 98.27%, the cumulative mortality rate was 1.73%, the age range of diagnosed cases was 5 days to 85 years old, and the male-to-female ratio was 1.09:1. The confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Henan Province were mainly imported cases from Hubei, accounting for 87.74% of all cases, of which the highest proportion was 70.50% in Zhumadian. The contact cases and local cases increased in a fluctuating manner over time. In this paper, epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 in Henan Province were analyzed from the onset of the outbreak to the effective control within 60 days, and effective and distinctive prevention and control measures in various cities were summarized to provide a favorable useful reference for the further formulation and implementation of epidemic prevention and control and a valuable theoretical basis for effectively avoiding a second outbreak. IMPORTANCE Epidemic prevention and control in China have entered a new stage of normalization. This article analyzes the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 in Henan Province and summarizes the effective disease prevention and control means and measures at the prefecture level; the normalized private data provide a theoretical reference for the formulation and conduct of future prevention and control work. At the same time, these epidemic prevention and control findings can also be used for reference in other countries and regions.

Melatonin (Mel) has been shown to involve in many essential cell functions via modulating many signaling pathways. We for the first time investigated that Mel exerted anti-tumor activities in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) via inhibiting cell proliferation and promoting cell apoptosis. Further study revealed that Mel treatment increased expression of LC3-II and decreased p62 proteins with the enhanced production of autolysosome, indicating it induced activation of autophagy. Nevertheless, Mel treatment together with autophagy inhibitors 3-MA or CQ exacerbated the damage effect of Mel in HL cells, which means autophagy plays a protective role in this process. Furthermore, we found Mel treatment increased the expression of G protein-coupled receptors MT2 and retinoic acid-related orphan receptors (RORs), eg. RORA, RORB and RORC. While RORC has the highest increase in Mel treated HL cells. In addition, RORC overexpression induced autophagy activation. Therefore, Mel showed tumor-suppressive role due to an increased level of RORC induced autophagy in HL.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a key role in forest carbon biogeochemistry by linking soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and water fluxes, which is further shaped by elevated atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. Although enhanced SOC sequestration was evidenced in tropical forests due to rising N deposition, it remains unclear how long-term N inputs affect soil DOM composition, which regulates SOC sequestration capability due to its mobility and biological instability. Here, the quantity, optical properties, and molecular-level characteristics of soil DOM based on a simulative N deposition experiment with four N addition levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 g m ^−2 yr ^−1 ) were studied in a primary tropical forest in south China. Results showed that 18 year N additions significantly altered soil DOM composition, with an increasing trend in soil dissolved organic carbon content. Medium- (10 g m ^−2 yr ^−1 ) and high-N addition (15 g m ^−2 yr ^−1 ) markedly elevated DOM average molecular weight by 12% and aromaticity, with specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm increasing by 17%, modified aromatic index by 35%, and condensed aromatics by 67%. Medium- and high-N addition also increased recalcitrant DOM components but decreased other DOM components, with increasing percentages of lignin-like, tannin-like, and carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecule-like compounds, and decreasing percentage of more bioavailable contributions with H/C ratio >1.5. Importantly, significant correlations of the SOC content of the heavy fraction with optical properties and with recalcitrant DOM components were observed. These findings suggest that long-term N additions may alter soil DOM composition in a way to benefit soil OC storage in the primary tropical forests. It merits focusing on the mechanisms to association of soil DOM dynamics with SOC sequestration.

Antimony (Sb), a global and priority controlled pollutant, causes severe environmental issues. Bioremediation by microbial communities containing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is considered to be among the safest, economical, and environmentally friendly methods to remove Sb from wastewater. However, the roles of SRB species in these communities remain uncertain, and pure cultures of bacteria that may be highly efficient have not yet been developed for Sb removal. In this study, an Sb tolerant community was enriched from municipal sludge, and molecular ecological analysis showed that Escherichia (40%) and Desulfovibrio (15%) were the dominant bacteria. Further isolation and identification showed that the enriched SRB strains were closely related to Cupidesulfovibrio oxamicus, based on the molecular analyses of 16S rRNA and dsrB genes. Among them, a strain named SRB49 exhibited the highest activity in removal of Sb(V). SRB49 was able to remove 95% of Sb(V) at a concentration of 100 mg/L within 48 h under optimum conditions: a temperature of 37–40 °C, an initial pH value of 8, 4 mM of sulfate, and an initial redox potential of 145–229 mV. SEM-EDX analysis showed that SRB49 did not adsorb Sb(V) but reduced and precipitated Sb(V) via the formation of Sb2S3. The results demonstrated the potential roles that pure cultures of SRB species may play in Sb removal and the use of Sb-tolerant SRB strains for Sb remediation.

Abstract Ni(OH)2 electrocatalysts have acquired lots of research attentions as ideal substitutes for noble metals. However, their electrocatalytic performance still cannot meet the demands for applications due to the difficulties in electron transfer and mass transport. According to kinetics principle, the construction of hollow structure is regarded as an effective method to achieve outstanding electrocatalytic performance. In this work, Ni(OH)2 hollow porous architecture (Ni(OH)2 HPA) was simply synthesized through a coordinating etching and precipitating (CEP) method for the building of enzymatic-free glucose sensors. Ni(OH)2 HPA presents large specific surface area (SSA), ordered diffusion channels, and structure stability. As a detection electrode for glucose, Ni(OH)2 HPA exhibits eminent electroactivity in terms of high sensitivity (1843 μA mM−1 cm−2), lower detection limit (0.23 μM), and short response time (1.4 s). The results demonstrate that Ni(OH)2 HPA has practical applications for construction of enzymatic-free electrochemical sensors. The design of hollow structure also provides an effective engineering method for high-performance sensors.

Abstract Background To compare different K readings in pseudophakic patients post-Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and evaluate corresponding prediction errors in intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations. Methods Subjects that underwent cataract surgery and DSAEK surgery at least 3 and 6 months prior, respectively, and IOL implantation in the capsular bag were included in this study. Manifest refraction and IOL information were recorded. A Scheimpflug keratometer (Pentacam) was used for corneal measurements, including the mean anterior and posterior radii of curvature, simulated keratometer (SimK), true net power (TNP), and equivalent K reading (EKR) at the 4.0-mm zone. Conventional keratometry was acquired using the IOLMaster (KMaster). The four K measurements were evaluated for calculating the predicted refraction. Results The study included 20 eyes from 19 subjects. The ratio of the posterior to the anterior corneal radius was 74.1 ± 3.24%. Comparison of the four keratometric methods (KMaster, SimK, EKR, and TNP) revealed statistically significant differences among all the methods besides KMaster and SimK. Of the four IOL calculation methods(KMaster, SimK, EKR and TNP method),the arithmetic prediction error of the KMaster, SimK, and EKR methods featured nonsignificant differences from zero(p = 0.07, 0.19 and 0.84 respectively); the EKR method calculated the highest percentage of eyes with IOLs within the prediction error. Conclusions IOL calculations in post-DSAEK eyes using KMaster, SimK, and EKR can yield small refractive errors after surgery. The EKR (4.0-mm diameter) method was found to be the most accurate.

Abstract Background Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the world’s most important grain crops. The amyloplast, a specialized organelle, is the major site for starch synthesis and storage in wheat grain. Understanding the metabolism in amyloplast during grain development in wheat cultivars with different quality traits will provide useful information for potential yield and quality improvement. Results Two wheat cultivars, ZM366 and YM49–198 that differ in kernel hardness and starch characteristics, were used to examine the metabolic changes in amyloplasts at 10 and 15 days after anthesis (DAA) using label-free-based proteome analysis. We identified 523 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) between 10 DAA and 15 DAA, and 229 DEPs between ZM366 and YM49–198. These DEPs mainly participate in eight biochemical processes: carbohydrate metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, stress/defense, transport, energetics-related, signal transduction, protein synthesis/assembly/degradation, and nucleic acid-related processes. Among these proteins, the DEPs showing higher expression levels at 10 DAA are mainly involved in carbohydrate metabolism, stress/defense, and nucleic acid related processes, whereas DEPs with higher expression levels at 15 DAA are mainly carbohydrate metabolism, energetics-related, and transport-related proteins. Among the DEPs between the two cultivars, ZM366 had more up-regulated proteins than YM49–198, and these are mainly involved in carbohydrate metabolism, nucleic acid-related processes, and transport. Conclusions The results of our study indicate that wheat grain amyloplast has the broad metabolic capability. The DEPs involved in carbohydrate metabolism, nucleic acids, stress/defense, and transport processes, with grain development and cultivar differences, are possibly responsible for different grain characteristics, especially with respect to yield and quality-related traits.

Summary: Since hundreds of clinical trials are investigating the use of multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) for therapeutic purposes, effective delivery of the cells to target tissues is critical. We have found an unexplored mechanism, by which basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2) induces expression of fucosyltransferase 8 (FUT8) to increase core fucosylations of N-linked glycans of membrane-associated proteins, including several integrin subunits. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments show that FUT8 is both necessary and sufficient to induce migration of MSCs. Silencing FUT8 also affects migration of MSCs in zebrafish embryos and a murine bone fracture model. Finally, we use in silico modeling to show that core fucosylations restrict the degrees of freedom of glycans on the integrin’s surface, hence stabilizing glycans on a specific position. Altogether, we show a mechanism whereby FGF2 promotes migration of MSCs by modifying N-glycans. This work may help improve delivery of MSCs in therapeutic settings. : In this article, Fierro and colleagues used RNA-seq and mass spectrometry to find that FGF2 induces migration of MSCs by inducing expression of FUT8, which leads to more core fucosylations of N-linked glycans of membrane-associated proteins, including several integrin subunits. The conventional Real Time Kinematic(RTK) location technology utilizes radio modem to transmit differential data between base station and mobile station. In this case, the transmission distance is limited and the location precision can be easily affected by external factors. In this paper, a practical RTK location technology which adopts 3G wireless communication technology to establish data link between mobile station and Continusly Operating Reference Station(CORS) center is proposed. The technology is implemented in S5PV210 microprocessor and Linux embedded system. This paper introduces the system architecture and operating principle of the terminal, and elaborates the methods to implement the hardware module and software module. The system has characters of good reliability, high precision and strong practicability. Test results show that the terminal is reliable and robust with centimetre-level location precision.

Abstract Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have attracted extensive research attentions as promising electrocatalytic materials. Despite low cost and high stability, the electrocatalytic activity of TMOs still cannot satisfy the requirements of applications. Inspired by kinetics, the design of hollow porous structure is considered as a promising strategy to achieve superior electrocatalytic performance. In this work, cubic NiO hollow porous architecture (NiO HPA) was constructed through coordinating etching and precipitating (CEP) principle followed by post calcination. Being employed to detect glucose, NiO HPA electrode exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity in terms of high sensitivity (1323 μA mM−1 cm−2) and low detection limit (0.32 μM). The excellent electrocatalytic activity can be ascribed to large specific surface area (SSA), ordered diffusion channels, and accelerated electron transfer rate derived from the unique hollow porous features. The results demonstrate that the NiO HPA could have practical applications in the design of nonenzymatic glucose sensors. The construction of hollow porous architecture provides an effective nanoengineering strategy for high-performance electrocatalysts.

The global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based multi-antenna attitude determination method has the advantages of a simple algorithm and no error accumulation with time in long endurance operation. However, it is sometimes difficult to simultaneous obtain the fixed solutions of all antennas in vehicle attitude determination. If float or incorrect fixed solutions are used, precision and reliability of attitude cannot be guaranteed. Given this fact, a baseline-constrained ambiguity function method (BCAFM) based on a self-built four GNSS antennas hardware platform is proposed. The coordinates obtained by BCAFM can replace the unreliable real-time kinematic (RTK) float or incorrect fixed solutions, so as to assist the direct method for attitude determination. In the proposed BCAFM, the baseline constraint is applied to improve search efficiency (searching time), and the ambiguity function value (AFV) formula is optimized to enhance the discrimination of true peak. The correctness of the proposed method is verified by vehicle attitude determination results and baseline length difference. Experimental results demonstrate that the function values of error peaks are reduced, and the only true peak can be identified accurately. The valid epoch proportion increases by 14.95% after true peak coordinates are used to replace the GNSS-RTK float or incorrect fixed solutions. The precision of the three attitude angles is 0.54°, 1.46°, and 1.15°, respectively. Meanwhile, the RMS of baseline length difference is 3.8 mm.
