Abstract

The second international comparison of absolute gravimeters was held in Walferdange, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in November 2007, in which twenty absolute gravimeters took part. A short description of the data processing and adjustments will be presented here and will be followed by the presentation of the results. Two different methods were applied to estimate the relative offsets between the gravimeters. We show that the results are equivalent as the uncertainties of both adjustments overlap. The absolute gravity meters agree with one another with a standard deviation of 2 μgal (1 gal = 1 cm/s2). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

426. Observing Fennoscandian Gravity Change by Absolute Gravimetry.

Abstract

The Nordic countries Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland are a key study region for the research of glacial isostasy, and, in addition, it offers a unique opportunity for validating and testing the results of the GRACE experiment. Over a period of five years, the expected life time of GRACE, a temporal geoid variation of 3.0 mm is expected in the centre of the Fennoscandian land uplift area, corresponding to a gravity change of about 100 nm/s2. This is expected to be within the detection capabilities of GRACE. With terrestrial absolute gravimetry, the gravity change due to the land uplift can be observed with an accuracy of ±10 to 20 nm/s2 for a 5-year period. Thus, the terrestrial insitu observations (ground-truth) may be used to validate and test the GRACE results. Since 2003, absolute gravity measurements have been performed in Fennoscandia at about 30 stations covering Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Four groups with FG5 absolute gravimeters (BKG, FGI, IfE, UMB) are engaged to survey the uplift network annually by a mutually controlled procedure. Nearly all absolute stations are colocated with permanent GPS stations. From the 2003 and 2004 comparisons between the instruments, an overall accuracy of ±30 nm/s2 is indicated for a single absolute gravimeter and a single station determination. Abstract

This study proposes ethnic and host society identities as potentially important factors of psychological and physical self-concept during adolescence and young adulthood in a culturally diverse society. Both social identity theory and the ethnic identity development model suggest that a strong identification with ethnic group or majority group in a society promote overall self-concept (Phinney 1989, 1990, 2003; Tajfel 1978). The data analyzed are derived from the Growing Up Canadian Project (Noh and Kasper 2003) that includes 585 adolescents and young adults living in the metropolitan area of Toronto, Canada; who were interviewed at their home in 1997 and 1998. The results support that ethnic and host society identities are important to both psychological and physical self-concept of adolescents and young adults. The analyses of specific dimensions of ethnic and host society identity show pride as the most important aspect of these identities for both psychological and physical self-concept. Additionally, the effectiveness of ethnic pride and host society pride/attachment varies by nativity status. In sum, findings of this study suggest importance of including not only ethnic identity, but also host society identity and analyzing their specific dimensions in future studies of self-concept and group identity. Abstract

There is dissension in the literature on the measurement of attribution of responsibility. Sociologists, psychologists, and criminologists use attribution of responsibility but its dimensionality has not been established. The present study was designed to test if attribution of responsibility is a multidimensional or unidimensional concept. Data were collected from 201 undergraduate students enrolled in Introduction to Sociology courses at a large Midwestern University to examine whether attribution of responsibility is a unidimensional or multidimensional concept. Results indicate that there are four separate factors associated with attribution of responsibility, causality, knowledge, intentionality, and moral wrongfulness, which supports the contention that attribution of responsibility is a multidimensional concept. Abstract

This study examines the relationship among giftedness, gender, and overexcitability. Previous studies examining these relationships were based on an open-ended questionnaire and small samples. This study uses a new self-rating questionnaire to assess overexcitabilities, the Overexcitability Questionnaire II, and findings are based on a large sample of 562 university students. Giftedness was measured by a student's participation in either a gifted, advanced, or standard curriculum program. Results show that previous findings on the relationship between giftedness and overexcitability can be confirmed; gifted students scored significantly higher on intellectual and emotional overexcitability than students in either of the other two programs. Further, males scored higher overall on intellectual, imaginational, and psychomotor overexcitability, while females scored higher on emotional and sensual overexcitability.

Abstract

Gemäß EG-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie (WRRL) sind für die sogenannten Flussgebietseinheiten Maßnahmenprogramme festzulegen, mithilfe derer die Umweltziele der Richtlinie erreicht werden sollen. Die hierfür auszuwählenden Maß­nah­men müssen allerdings nicht nur ökologisch wirksam sein, sondern zugleich das ökonomische Kriterium der Kosteneffizienz erfüllen. Daher wird aus methodischer Sicht empfohlen, die potentiell geeigneten Alternativen mittels Kosten‑Wirksamkeits‑Analyse zu bewerten. Letztlich ist eine erfolgreiche Maßnahmenauswahl aber nur dann möglich, wenn sich der Methodeneinsatz auch im Kontext der Verwaltungspraxis als zielführend erweist.Vor diesem Hintergrund setzt sich Falk R. Lauterbach in seiner Studie mit der folgenden Leitfrage auseinander: Sind Kosten‑Wirksamkeits‑Analysen im Rahmen des konkreten Verwaltungshandelns geeignet, um kosteneffiziente Maßnahmen im Sinne der WRRL auszuwählen? Ihrer Klärung dient die exemplarische Durchführung der Bewertungsmethode innerhalb von Fallstudien in Niedersachsen. Auf Grundlage der hierbei gewonnenen Erkenntnisse wird die Eignung der Kosten‑Wirksamkeits‑Analyse für die Verwaltungspraxis anhand zuvor definierter Kriterien diskutiert und abschließend beurteilt. Handlungsempfehlungen für die künftige Maßnahmenauswahl ergänzen die Untersuchung.
