A correction to the article "Prerequisites for ubiquinone analogs to prevent mitochondrial permeability transition-induced cell death," which was published in a 2012 issue is presented.

Abstract: Four complete beef-production systems consisting each of two stages were compared. The systems were formed by combining two diets for the cow-calf herd with finishing heifers stage – St (Standard) and O3 (maximising omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) using wrapped grass silage) – with four diets for the bull-fattening herd stage — SM (silage maize starch), SML (silage maize starch plus linseed, rich in omega-3 FAs), FC (fibre-based concentrate), and SCL (starch-based concentrate plus linseed): St-SM, O3-SML, St-FC and O3-SCL. Life Cycle Assessments applied to these systems (from cradle to farm gate for a one-year period) estimated that their environmental impacts, per kg of carcass mass, ranged from 27.0 to 27.9kg CO2 equivalents (eq), 64.8–73.4MJ, 94–98g PO4 3− eq, 168–173g SO2 eq, 47–48m2year for climate change (CC, not including effect of land use and land-use change, LULUC), cumulative energy demand (CED), eutrophication potential, acidification potential and land occupation, respectively. Consideration of LULUC decreased CC from 8 to 10%. Minor impact differences between these systems were observed, except for CED of St-FC, mainly because more energy was needed to dehydrate beet pulp and lucerne. CC of O3-SCL was 3% lower than CC of St-SM. Most of the environmental impacts of beef-production systems originated from the cow-calf herd with finishing heifers (73–97%), which indicates that research on the reduction of environmental impacts of this type of beef-production system should focus on this herd. For the cow-calf herd with finishing heifers, comparison of several allocation methods revealed that allocation method strongly affected the impacts per kg of carcass mass of the breeding bull and finished cull cows and, to a much lesser extent, those of fattened bulls and finished heifers. Consideration of both products (several animal types) and the ecosystem services supplied by these systems seems a promising perspective. This concept needs to be discussed and developed as an approach to consider the multi-functionality of farming systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Vaccination coverage is insufficient for influenza, pneumococcus, and herpes zoster in people over the age of 65 in France, even though these are common infectious diseases. Using a computerised questionnaire, the aim of our study was to assess the knowledge of general practitioners, geriatricians, infectious diseases specialists and interns in the Loire region about the vaccination against these three diseases in elderly subjects, to identify the obstacles to vaccination, and to evaluate whether the provision of knowledge modifies the prescriptions and vaccination recommendations made to patients. Of the 125 responses from doctors and interns, 90.2 % are correct for influenza, 69.2 % for pneumococcus, and 32.8 % for herpes zoster, with no significant difference between specialities. By providing information, practitioners are more willing to vaccinate their patients against influenza (99 %), pneumococcus (93 %), and herpes zoster (39 %). The main obstacles to vaccination are the patient's refusal (85 %), the doctor's lack of knowledge and time (70 % and 41 % respectively), doubts about the vaccine's effectiveness (28 %), and fear of side effects (21 %).

Management of undernutrition is based on young adults analysis. However, enteral nutrition is mainly discussed in the elderly. The aim of this study was to analyse factors related to laying gastrostomy, in geriatrics. A prospective, descriptive study, was conducted in the Loire department, from 2014 to 2016, in geriatric and palliative units. All patients over 70 years who had a theorical indication of gastrostomy were included. Decision-making process was analyzed from data affecting the reflection. Patients were followed for three months. Twenty-six patients were included with an average of 81 years old. They were frailty with a low mean serum albumin (29.2 g/L), an undernutrition (85%), an extended bedridden (73%), a medical history of aspiration pneumonia (46%) and with pressure ulcers (27%). The main diagnoses were strokes (38%) and dementia (23%). After a singular decision-making, only 15% received a gastrostomy. At three months, 69.2% of patients had died. Patients over 70 years old, with a vital prognosis at short term, are not good candidates for gastrostomy. In geriatrics, decision-making for gastrostomy laying is complex because managed by contradictory recommendations. It requires a global assessment to identify risk situations. The early detection of undernutrition is the key to successful management, for patients requiring gastrostomy.
