Abstract

• Dynamics of the phytoplankton nutrient and whooping cough models have been investigated. • The concept of fixed point theory has been used to derive the existence and uniqueness results. • Homotopy Perturbation Elzaki Transform Method (HPETM) has been used for obtaining the solutions. • A non-singular fractional operator has been used to characterize the fractional dynamics. In this study, the dynamics of the phytoplankton nutrient and whooping cough models have been examined. Mechanisms of transmission of whooping cough and phytoplankton nutrient models are defined in the Atangana-Baleanu-Caputo (ABC) fractional derivative sense. The first biological system is concerned with the dynamics of phytoplankton–nutrient interaction in the recycling of nutrients, and the second is the modeling of whooping cough in the human population. The essential characteristics of the titled models have been presented, and further, the transmissions of the models defined in the ABC sense are addressed. The concept of fixed point theory is used to derive the existence and uniqueness results of the titled models. Solutions are obtained using the homotopy perturbation Elzaki transform method (HPETM), and numerical results are computed. Abstract

Abstract Precise detection of speech endpoints is an important factor which affects the performance of the systems where speech utterances need to be extracted from the speech signal such as Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system. Existing endpoint detection (EPD) methods mostly uses Short-Term Energy (STE), Zero-Crossing Rate (ZCR) based approaches and their variants. But STE and ZCR based EPD algorithms often fail in the presence of Non-speech Sound Artifacts (NSAs) produced by the speakers. Pattern recognition and classification techniques are also applied but those methods require labeled data for training. In this article, a novel approach is proposed to extract speech endpoints and the algorithm is termed as Wavelet Convolution based Speech Endpoint Detection (WCSED). WCSED decomposes the speech signal into high-frequency and low-frequency components using wavelet convolution and then computes information-entropy based thresholds for the two frequency components. The low-frequency thresholds are used to extract voiced speech segments, whereas the high-frequency thresholds are used to extract the unvoiced speech segments by filtering out the NSAs. WCSED does not require any labeled data for training and can automatically extract speech segments. Abstract

Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) devices have been widely studied and optimised in the framework of persistent dynamic loadings, such as harmonic and white noise excitations, in order to reduce as much as possible the steady-state response of an assigned primary structure. In this sense, the present paper arises as a complementary study on the topic, since here shock input is assumed as dynamic loading, so as to investigate the effectiveness of TMDs in reducing the transient structural response. In particular, an impulsive loading has been considered, acting as a base displacement, which is a situation that may occur in real applications. First, a comprehensive dynamic analysis of the system comprising of a primary structure and an attached passive TMD is carried out in the time domain. Focus is placed on the relationships between the load input and the system properties, in order to explore the dynamic behaviour of such system and to identify the main response trends, mostly as a function of the free TMD parameters, namely mass, frequency and TMD damping ratios. Subsequently, a hybrid TMD has been considered, by adding a feedback controller to the previously optimised passive TMD, so as to improve the performance of such a device, especially in reducing the peak response of the primary structure. The contents of the present work have the final aim of identifying the potential level of effectiveness of the TMD devices and to supply important guidelines towards their optimal design in reducing the structural response also to shock excitations. This should display significant relevance in different practical applications, including in the field of earthquake engineering.
