Over the last decade, technological advancements have been made available and applied in a wide range of applications in several work fields, ranging from personal to industrial enforcements. One of the emerging issues concerns occupational safety and health in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and, in more detail, it deals with how industrial hygienists could improve the risk-assessment process. A possible way to achieve these aims is the adoption of new exposure-monitoring tools. In this study, a systematic review of the up-to-date scientific literature has been performed to identify and discuss the most-used sensors that could be useful for occupational risk assessment, with the intent of highlighting their pros and cons. A total of 40 papers have been included in this manuscript. The results show that sensors able to investigate airborne pollutants (i.e., gaseous pollutants and particulate matter), environmental conditions, physical agents, and workers’ postures could be usefully adopted in the risk-assessment process, since they could report significant data without significantly interfering with the job activities of the investigated subjects. To date, there are only few “next-generation” monitors and sensors (NGMSs) that could be effectively used on the workplace to preserve human health. Due to this fact, the development and the validation of new NGMSs will be crucial in the upcoming years, to adopt these technologies in occupational-risk assessment.

A caracterização fractal da rede de drenagem de uma bacia hidrográfica surge da necessidade de se compreender a ocorrência de fenômenos hidrológicos, considerando a influência de fatores geomorfológicos. Desta forma, características físicas e fractais de uma bacia hidrográfica integram elementos importantes para análise de seu comportamento hidrológico. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a dimensão fractal de sub-bacias com diferentes características pelo método de Box-Counting (Contagem de Caixas), e verificar a relação existente entre dimensão fractal de cursos fluviais (df) e rede de drenagem (Df) e outras características da bacia hidrográfica, como comprimento do rio principal, área, perímetro, densidade da rede drenagem e declividade média da bacia A área de estudo foi um conjunto de 6 (seis) sub-bacias, dos rios Malacara, Leão, Pavão, Faxinalzinho, Arroio Josafaz, e Forno, as quais pertencem à bacia hidrográfica do rio Mampituba (RS/SC). Para isso foram analisados o fator de forma (F) e o coeficiente de compacidade (Kc) das sub-bacias e o método Box-Counting para calcular a dimensão fractal. Os valores de F encontrados foram menores que 0,50, sendo que os maiores valores foram para as sub-bacias do rio Faxinalzinho (F=0,27) e Leão (F=0,21) e o menor valor para a sub-bacia do Malacara (F=0,09). Os valores de Kc foram todos maiores que 1,50, indicando baixa tendência a enchentes. Diante dos valores de df e Df obtidos pelo método de Box-Counting, foi possível verificar que eles se mostraram satisfatórios, observando que existem correlações positivas significativas entre a dimensão fractal com os parâmentrso B, A e P das bacias exploradas neste estudo. Nesse sentido, a aplicação do método de análise da geometria fractal demonstrou ser uma metodologia viável, sendo uma ferramenta importante na avaliação geométrica de uma bacia hidrográfica.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) performs non-invasive visualization and characterization of microvasculature in research and clinical applications mainly in ophthalmology and dermatology. A wide variety of instruments, imaging protocols, processing methods and metrics have been used to describe the microvasculature, such that comparing different study outcomes is currently not feasible. With the goal of contributing to standardization of OCTA data analysis, we report a user-friendly, open-source toolbox, OCTAVA (OCTA Vascular Analyzer), to automate the pre-processing, segmentation, and quantitative analysis of en face OCTA maximum intensity projection images in a standardized workflow. We present each analysis step, including optimization of filtering and choice of segmentation algorithm, and definition of metrics. We perform quantitative analysis of OCTA images from different commercial and non-commercial instruments and samples and show OCTAVA can accurately and reproducibly determine metrics for characterization of microvasculature. Wide adoption could enable studies and aggregation of data on a scale sufficient to develop reliable microvascular biomarkers for early detection, and to guide treatment, of microvascular disease.

Abstract Background Ectrodactyly‐ectodermal dysplasia‐clefting syndrome 3 (EEC) is one of the six overlapping syndromes caused by mutations in the tumor protein p63 gene (TP63). EEC is suspected when patients have cleft hands or feet, polydactyly, and syndactyly, abnormal development of the ectodermally derived structures, and orofacial clefting. Genitourinary (GU) anomalies have been identified in patients with EEC, yet these are often under‐recognized and under‐reported. The available literature on sonographic prenatal findings is sparse, especially when considering GU anomalies. Methods We present the case of a male stillborn fetus, who was found antenatally to have multicystic dysplastic kidneys and anhydramnios. Following the termination of pregnancy, examination and autopsy further revealed unilateral polydactyly and bilateral syndactyly which had not been previously identified on antenatal ultrasound. Results Whole‐exome sequencing (WES) revealed a de novo heterozygous pathogenic variant in exon 5 of the TP63 gene: p.His247Arg: c.740A>G (NM_003722.4) which has been reported in the literature. The His247Arg variant has been published as a pathogenic variant in association with EEC, both with and without orofacial clefting. Conclusion Our prenatal case expands the phenotypic spectrum of TP63‐related disorders in general. In addition, it adds to the phenotype associated with the His247Arg pathogenic variant responsible for EEC. Further, we highlight the importance of WES as a postnatal tool to help clarify unexpected findings, and as a way to add to the spectrum of existing phenotypes of known single‐gene disorders.

Monoclonal gammopathy and peripheral neuropathy are common diseases of elderly patients, and almost 10% of patients with neuropathy of unknown cause have paraprotein. However, growing evidence suggests that several hematological malignancies synthesize and release monoclonal proteins that damage the peripheral nervous system through different mechanisms. The spectrum of the disease varies from mild to rapidly progressive symptoms, sometimes affecting not only sensory nerve fibers, but also motor and autonomic fibers. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach, mainly between hematologists and neurologists, is recommended in order to establish the correct diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathy of neurological significance and to tailor therapy based on specific genetic mutations. In this review, we summarize the spectrum of monoclonal gammopathies of neurological significance, their distinctive clinical and neurophysiological phenotypes, the most relevant pathophysiological events and new therapeutic approaches.

Nodular cast irons are widely adopted in off-highway vehicles, since they allow to obtain components with complex shapes as well as good mechanical properties. However, the fatigue strength of such components is a major issue, which is typically addressed by adopting the strain-life approach, since it considers the local strains at stress concentrators where fatigue cracks are prone to initiate. In the fatigue design of off-highway components, the detrimental effect of casting skin, due to both surface and subsurface features, must be accounted for in all cases where machining is not needed. Moreover, the local strain ratio at stress raisers can be different from the nominal one due to forward plasticity. In this paper, static tensile as well as strain-controlled fatigue tests have been executed on specimens taken from real EN-GJS-450-10 off-highway axles. Static tensile tests have been performed on specimens with machined surfaces, while fatigue tests at a strain ratio equal to −1 have been carried out on specimens with surfaces in both machined and as-cast conditions. In addition, machined specimens have been tested at strain ratios equal to 0.1 and 0.5 to investigate the material sensitivity to the mean strain. Finally, the high-cycle downgrading effect of the casting skin has been evaluated, and experimental data of machined specimens tested at different strain ratios have been summarized by using the Smith–Watson–Topper expression.

The European catfish (Silurus glanis) was introduced in Italy during the last century for aquaculture purposes, and now it is well-established. S. glanis is an invasive species and a top predator that can deplete prey supply in the surrounding habitat, leading to changes in the aquatic food web. Consequently, its presence is considered a threat to native fish populations. Its presence in the Lake Maggiore (Northern Italy) is recent and there is a lack of knowledge about its ability to completely exploit this new ecosystem throughout the year. This study corroborated the ability of European catfish to exploit both pelagic and littoral habitats, promoting trophic interactions in both habitats. Over 2019, multiple sampling approaches have been applied by collecting S. glanis and analysing its stomach contents with the aim of inferring interactions with the freshwater community. Its diet was mainly based on crayfish (Orconectes limosus), followed by six prey fish and the genus Corbicula; two fish species (Padogobius bonelli and Salaria fluviatilis) were added to the list of known prey fish. Notably and alarmingly for the early potential top-down pressure towards all trophic levels, young individuals were proved to also feed on fish and crayfish. S. glanis showed the ability to hunt at deep depths (>60 m) and a high growth rate, despite Lake Maggiore being oligotrophic.

ABSTRACT Dengue is the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral disease affecting humans, with severe dengue typified by potentially fatal microvascular leakage and hypovolemic shock. Blood vessels of the microvasculature are composed of a tubular structure of endothelial cells ensheathed by perivascular cells (pericytes). Pericytes support endothelial cell barrier formation and maintenance through paracrine and contact-mediated signaling and are critical to microvascular integrity. Pericyte dysfunction has been linked to vascular leakage in noncommunicable pathologies such as diabetic retinopathy but has never been linked to infection-related vascular leakage. Dengue vascular leakage has been shown to result in part from the direct action of the secreted dengue virus (DENV) nonstructural protein NS1 on endothelial cells. Using primary human vascular cells, we show here that NS1 also causes pericyte dysfunction and that NS1-induced endothelial hyperpermeability is more pronounced in the presence of pericytes. Notably, NS1 specifically disrupted the ability of pericytes to support endothelial cell function in a three-dimensional (3D) microvascular assay, with no effect on pericyte viability or physiology. These effects are mediated at least in part through contact-independent paracrine signals involved in endothelial barrier maintenance by pericytes. We therefore identify a role for pericytes in amplifying NS1-induced microvascular hyperpermeability in severe dengue and thus show that pericytes can play a critical role in the etiology of an infectious vascular leakage syndrome. These findings open new avenues of research for the development of drugs and diagnostic assays for combating infection-induced vascular leakage, such as severe dengue. IMPORTANCE The World Health Organization considers dengue one of the top 10 global public health problems. There is no specific antiviral therapy to treat dengue virus and no way of predicting which patients will develop potentially fatal severe dengue, typified by vascular leakage and circulatory shock. We show here that perivascular cells (pericytes) amplify the vascular leakage-inducing effects of the dengue viral protein NS1 through contact-independent signaling to endothelial cells. While pericytes are known to contribute to noncommunicable vascular leakage, this is the first time these cells have been implicated in the vascular effects of an infectious disease. Our findings could pave the way for new therapies and diagnostics to combat dengue and potentially other infectious vascular leakage syndromes.

Objetivo: Verificar associação entre consumo da alimentação escolar e ingestão de nutrientes e qualidade da dieta em escolares da cidade de São Leopoldo. Métodos: Análise transversal com dados de crianças de 7 a 8 anos. Foram realizados dois recordatórios de 24 horas para a ingestão de nutrientes. O consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados e o Índice de Alimentação Saudável (HEI) foram avaliados a partir desse instrumento. As crianças foram questionadas quanto a origem do (s) lanche (s) realizado (s) na escola: se levado de casa, comprado na cantina ou a alimentação oferecida pela escola. Resultados: Dados de 313 crianças foram analisados e observou-se que 32,6% consumiam a alimentação escolar exclusivamente. Em comparação com os demais grupos, o que consumiu exclusivamente a alimentação escolar obteve maior consumo de fibras (p=0,017), menor consumo de ultraprocessados e menor percentual de energia vindo desse tipo de alimento (p
