There is much debate whether the fatty acid substrate of lipoxygenase binds "carboxylate-end first" or "methyl-end first" in the active site of soybean lipoxygenase-1 (sLO-1). To address this issue, we investigated the sLO-1 mutants Trp500Leu, Trp500Phe, Lys260Leu, and Arg707Leu with steady-state and stopped-flow kinetics. Our data indicate that the substrates (linoleic acid (LA), arachidonic acid (AA)), and the products (13-(S)-hydroperoxy-9,11-(Z,E)-octadecadienoic acid (HPOD) and 15-(S)-hydroperoxyeicosatetraeonic acid (15-(S)-HPETE)) interact with the aromatic residue Trp500 (possibly π-π interaction) and with the positively charged amino acid residue Arg707 (charge-charge interaction). Residue Lys260 of soybean lipoxygenase-1 had little effect on either the activation or steady-state kinetics, indicating that both the substrates and products bind "carboxylate-end first" with sLO-1 and not "methyl-end first" as has been proposed for human 15-lipoxygenase. Herein, we report on the role of the allosteric site in the activation mechanism of soybean lipoxygenase-1 utilizing stopped-flow inhibition kinetic studies. The K[sub D] for the activation was determined to be 25.9 ± 2.3 µM and the rate constant for the oxidation of the iron cofactor, k[sub 2], to be 182 ± 4 s[sup -1]. Two inhibitors were employed in this study, (Z)-9-octadecenyl sulfate (OS) and (Z)-9-palmitoleyl sulfate (PS), of which OS is an allosteric inhibitor of the turnover process, while PS is a linear mixed inhibitor with a K[sub i] of 13.7 ± 1.3 µM for the catalytic site and a K'[sub i] of 140 ± 9 µM for the allosteric site. It was found that OS does not inhibit the activation of soybean lipoxygenase-1, while PS acts as a competitive inhibitor versus the product, 13-hydroperoxy-9,11-(Z,E)-octadecadienoic acid, with a K[sub i] of 17.5 ± 3.8 µM. These results suggest that OS binds to an allosteric site that is separate from the catalytic iron site. We further observed that the allosteric site binding selectivity is sensitive to inhibitor length as seen by its preference for OS over that of PS, which is two carbons longer than PS. An ab initio study of two series of carbon-to-carbon proton transfer reactions is reported. The first series refers to the heterocyclic C(4)H(5)X(+)/C(4)H(4)X (X = CH(-), NH, S, O, PH, CH(2), AlH, BH) systems, and the second to the linear [Formula: see text] (X = CH(-), NH, S, PH, O, CH(2), AlH, BH) reference systems . The major objective of this study was to examine to what degree the aromaticity of C(4)H(4)X (X = CH(-), NH, S, O, PH) and the antiaromaticity of C(4)H(4)X (X = AlH, BH) is expressed at the transition state of the proton transfer and how this affects the respective intrinsic barriers. From the differences in the barriers between a given cyclic system and the corresponding linear reference system , ΔΔH(++) = ΔH(++)(cyclic) - ΔH(++)(linear), it was inferred that in the cyclic systems both aromaticity and antiaromaticity lower ΔH(++)(cyclic). This conclusion was based on the assumption that the factors not associated with aromaticity or antiaromaticity such as resonance, inductive and polarizability effects in the protonated species, and charge delocalization occurring along the reaction coordinate affect ΔH(++) for the cyclic and linear systems in a similar way and hence offset each other in ΔΔH(++). The extent by which ΔH(++)(cyclic) is lowered in the aromatic systems correlates quite well with the degree of aromaticity of C(4)H(4)X as measured by aromatic stabilization energies as well as the NICS(1) values of the respective C(4)H(4)X. According to the rules of the principle of nonperfect synchronization (PNS), these results imply a disproportionately large degree of aromaticity at the transition state for the aromatic systems and a disproportionately small degree of transition state antiaromaticity for the antiaromatic systems. These conclusions are consistent with the changes in the NICS(1) values along the reaction coordinate. Other points discussed in the paper include the complex interplay of resonance, inductive, and polarizability effects, along with aromaticity and antiaromaticity on the proton affinities of C(4)H(4)X.

Nucleophilic vinylic substitution (S(N)V), in which a leaving group such as halogen is replaced by a carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, or other nucleophile, is an important synthetic tool. It generates compounds with a carbon- or heteroatom-substituted carbon-carbon double bond, such as vinyl ethers, enamines, a variety of heterocyclic systems, and intermediates to pharmaceutically important compounds. The S(N)V reaction has many mechanistic variants, which depend on the substituents, nucleophile, leaving group, and solvent, among other factors. Among these mechanisms, the "addition-elimination" S(N)V route is the most important to synthetic chemists. S(N)V reactions are involved in several biological processes, notably (i) in the inactivation of proteases, (ii) in intermediates of herbicide metabolism, and (iii) in the formation of mutagenic intermediates by reaction of glutathione with the environmental pollutant trichloroethylene. A variant involving a tetrahedral intermediate was found in the enzymatic transfer of an enolpyruvyl group of phosphoenolpyruvate. The main S(N)V mechanism was previously analyzed in terms of a variable transition state with perpendicular nucleophilic attack. Electron-withdrawing groups Y and Y' in the beta position adjacent to the C(alpha) reaction site increase the nucleophilic attack rate; the retention of stereochemistry was mostly ascribed to formation of carbanionic intermediate 1, in which internal rotation is slower than nucleofuge expulsion (k2). As predicted, poor nucleofuges and high activation led to partial or complete stereoconvergence, and an intramolecular element effect in polyhaloethylenes gave competition ratios, kF/kBr < 1. Evidence for a zwitterionic intermediate comes from amine-catalyzed substitutions with amines. The mechanistic spectrum investigated is wide in terms of rate constants, electron-withdrawing groups, nucleophiles, leaving groups, and solvents. However, the two extremes, that is, the very slightly activated systems where in-plane invertive substitution is feasible and conversely the highly activated systems carrying poor nucleofuges where the intermediate may be observable and kinetics examined, remained almost unexplored for a long time. In this Account, we describe the progress during the last two decades in these areas. Computations on low-reactivity systems showed that the in-plane invertive single-step nucleophilic sigma attack can have a lower barrier than the pi-perpendicular retentive attack. A kBr/kCl > 1 could be deduced for the H2C=CHX (X = Cl, Br) system. Several inverted substitution-cyclizations or inverted ring openings were observed. Alkenyl iodonium salts with superb nucleofuges, showed in-plane substitutions by various nucleophiles. In parallel, we demonstrated that several highly activated systems carrying poor nucleofuges enabled a direct detection of the intermediate 1 when attacked by strong nucleophiles. Poor correlation between the equilibrium constants K1(RS) for RS- attack and pKa(CH2YY') indicates large nucleofuge steric effects (SPr > SMe > OMe >> H). Rate and equilibrium constants for RS- attack as a function of YY' also correlate poorly owing to differences in intrinsic barriers caused by different resonance effects of YY'. The expulsion of either the nucleofuge (k2) or the nucleophile (k(-1)) from 1 was analyzed with respect to several factors. Challenges still remain, including acquiring experimental data for unactivated systems and observing an intermediate carrying a good nucleofuge.

The role of negative hyperconjugation and anomeric and polar effects in stabilizing the XZHCbetaCalphaYY'- intermediates in SNV reactions was studied computationally by DFT methods. Destabilizing steric effects are also discussed. The following ions were studied: X = CH3O, CH3S, CF3CH2O and Y = Y' = Z = H (7b-7d), Y = Y' = H, Z = CH3O, CH3S, CF3CH2O (7e-7i), YY' = Meldrum's acid-like moiety (Mu), Z = H, (8b-8d), and YY' = Mu, Z = CH3O, CH3S, CF3CH2O (8e-8i). The electron-withdrawing Mu substituent at Calpha stabilizes considerably the intermediates and allows their accumulation. The hyperconjugation ability (HCA) (i.e., the stabilization due to 2p(Calpha) --> sigma*(Cbeta-X) interaction) in 8b-8d follows the order (for X, kcal/mol) CH3S (8.5) > CF3CH2O (7.6) approximately CH3O (7.5). The HCA in 8b-8d is significantly smaller than that in 7b-7d due to charge delocalization in Mu in the former. The calculated solvent (1:1 DMSO/H2O) effect is small. The stability of disubstituted ions (7e-7i and 8e-8i) is larger than that of monosubstituted ions due to additional stabilization by negative hyperconjugation and an anomeric effect. However, steric repulsion between the geminal Cbeta substituents destabilizes these ions. The steric effects are larger when one or both substituents are CH3S. The anomeric stabilization (the energy difference between the anti,anti and gauche,gauche conformers) in the disubstituted anions contributes only a small fraction to their total stabilization. Its order (for the following X/Z pairs, kcal/mol) is CF3CH2O/CH3S (8i, 4.9) > CF3CH2O/CH3O (8h, 3.9) > CH3O/CH3S (8g, 3.3) > CH3S/CH3S (8f, 2.9) > CH3O/CH3O (8e, 2.4). Significantly larger anomeric effects of ca. 8-9 kcal/mol are calculated for the corresponding conjugate acids.

A kinetic study of the reactions of thiolate ions with three Fischer-type [aryloxy(phenyl)carbene]pentacarbonyl chromium(0) complexes in 50% MeCN-50% water (v/v) is reported. Brønsted plots of the second-order rate constants are biphasic with an initial steep rise for weakly basic thiolate ions (beta(nuc) approximately equal to 1.0) followed by a slightly descending leg with a negative slope (beta(nuc) approximately equal to -0.2) for strongly basic thiolate ions. This indicates a change from rate-limiting leaving group departure at low pK(RSH)(a) to rate-limiting nucleophilic attachment at high pK(RSH)(a). The negative beta(nuc) values result from a combination of minimal progress of C-S bond formation at the transition state and the requirement for partial desolvation of the nucleophile before it enters the transition state. Possible factors that may affect the degree of bond formation in reactions of Fischer carbene complexes as well as reactions of other unsaturated electrophiles with thiolate ions are discussed.

A kinetic study of the reversible deprotonation of methylnitroacetate (4H) by primary aliphatic amines, secondary alicyclic amines, hydroxide ion, and water in water at 25 degrees C and in 50% DMSO/50% water (v/v) at 20 degrees C is reported. Intrinsic rate constants, k0, determined by extrapolation or interpolation of Brønsted plots have been determined. In comparison to proton transfers involving other nitroalkanes, the intrinsic rate constants for 4H are exceptionally high; for example, log k0 for the reaction of 4H with secondary alicyclic amines in water (1.22) is 1.81 log units higher than log k0 for nitromethane (-0.59), while in 50% DMSO/50% water, log k0 for 4H (2.44) is 1.71 log units higher than that for nitromethane (0.73). A general discussion of the factors affecting intrinsic rate constants of proton transfer from nitroalkanes is presented; it provides the context for an understanding as to why k0 is so high for the proton transfers from 4H. The correlation between intrinsic rate constants for the addition of nucleophiles to alkenes of the type R'R' 'C=CXY and the intrinsic rate constants of proton transfers from carbon acids of the type H2CXY is also discussed as a general proposition as well as with specific reference to the Ph(SMe)C=C(NO2)CO2Me/H2C(NO2)CO2Me pair.

A kinetic study of the reversible deprotonation of benzofuran-3(2H)-one (3H-O) and benzothiophene-3(2H)-one (3H-S) by amines and hydroxide ion in water at 25 degrees C is reported. The respective conjugate bases, 3--O and 3--S, represent benzofuran and benzothiophene derivatives, respectively, and thus are aromatic. The main question addressed in this paper is whether this aromaticity has the effect of enhancing or lowering intrinsic barriers to proton transfer. These intrinsic barriers were either determined from Brønsted plots for the reactions with amines or calculated on the basis of the Marcus equation for the reaction with OH-; they were found to be lower for the more highly aromatic benzothiophene derivative, indicating that aromaticity lowers the intrinsic barrier. It is shown that the reduction in the intrinsic barrier is not an artifact of other factors such as inductive, steric, resonance, polarizability, and pi-donor effects, although these factors affect the intrinsic barriers in a major way. Our results imply that aromatic stabilization of the transition state is ahead of proton transfer; this contrasts with simple resonance effects, which typically lag behind proton transfer at the transition state, thereby increasing intrinsic barriers.

The main question addressed in this paper is whether the nucleophilic substitution of the p-nitrophenoxy group in (CO)5Cr=C(OC6H4-4-NO2)Ph (1-NO2) by a series of substituted phenoxide ions is concerted or stepwise. Rate constants, kArO, for these substitution reactions were determined in 50% MeCN-50% water (v/v) at 25 degrees C. A Brønsted plot of log kArO versus pKa(ArOH) s consistent with a stepwise mechanism. This contrasts with reactions of aryl oxide ions with p-nitrophenyl acetate and with similar acyl transfers which are concerted. The reason for the contrast is that the tetrahedral intermediates formed in the reactions of 1-NO2 are much more stable than those in acyl transfers and the intrinsic barriers to their decomposition are higher than for the ester reactions. The points on the Brønsted plots for which pKa(ArOH) > or = pKa(PNP) define a straight line with beta(nuc) = -0.39, suggesting that bond formation has made very little progress at the transition state and that partial desolvation of the nucleophile is part of the activation process. The hydrolysis of 1-NO2 and of the unsubstituted analogue (1-H) has also been studied over a wide pH range, providing rate constants for nucleophilic attack by hydroxide ion (kOH), by water (kH2O), and by general base-catalyzed reaction with water (kB). Furthermore, kH2O values were obtained for the hydrolysis of (CO)5Cr=C(OC6H4X)Ph (1-X) as a byproduct of the reactions of 1-NO2 with aryl oxide ions. Structure-reactivity relationships for these reactions are discussed in terms of inductive, pi-donor, and steric effects.

The rates of hydrolysis of alpha-R-alpha-(methylthio)methylene Meldrum's acids (8-R with R = H, Me, Et, s-Bu, and t-Bu) were determined in basic and acidic solution in 50% DMSO-50% water (v/v) at 20 degrees C. In basic solution (KOH), nucleophilic attack to form a tetrahedral intermediate (T(OH)-) is rate limiting for all substrates (k1(OH)). In acidic solution (HCl) and at intermediate pH values (acetate buffers), water attack (k1(H2O) is rate limiting for 8-Me, 8-Et, and 8-s-Bu; the same is presumably the case for 8-t-Bu, but rates were too slow for accurate measurements at low pH. For 8-H, water attack is rate limiting at intermediate pH but at pH < 4.5 MeS- departure from the tetrahedral intermediate becomes rate limiting. Our interpretation of these results is based on a reaction scheme that involves three pathways for the conversion of T(OH)- to products, two of which being unique to hydrolysis reactions and taking advantage of the acidic nature of the OH group in T(OH)-. This scheme provides an explanation why even at high [KOH] T(OH)- does not accumulate to detectable levels even though the equilibrium for OH- addition to 8-R is expected to favor T(OH)-, and why at low pH water attack is rate limiting for R = Me, Et, s-Bu, and t-Bu but leaving group departure becomes rate limiting with the sterically small R = H. The trend in the k1(OH) and k1(H2O) indicates increasing steric crowding at the transition state with increasing size of R, but this effect is partially offset by a sterically induced twisting of the C=C double bond in 8-R which leads to its elongation and makes the substrate less stable and hence more reactive. Our computational results suggest that this effect becomes particularly pronounced for R = t-Bu and explains why k1(OH) for 8-t-Bu is somewhat higher than for the less crowded 8-s-Bu.

The deprotonation of pentacarbonyl[(3-diethylamino-2,4-dimethyl)cyclobut-2-ene-1-ylidene]chromium (1d) and pentacarbonyl[(3-diethylamino-4-methyl-2-phenyl)cyclobut-2-ene-1-ylidene]chromium (1e) leads to antiaromatic conjugate anions by virtue of their being cyclobutadiene derivatives. Rate constants for the deprotonation of 1d and 1e by P2-Et and pKa values were determined in acetonitrile. Gas-phase B3LYP calculations of 1d, 1e, and their respective conjugate anions, using a generalized basis set, were also performed. Furthermore, for purposes of comparison with carbene complexes of similar structures, but having conjugate anions that are not antiaromatic, corresponding calculations were performed on pentacarbonyl[3-diethylamino-2,5-dimethyl)cyclopent-2-ene-1-ylidene]chromium (5), [dimethylamino(methyl)carbene]pentacarbonylchromium (3a), and [dimethylamino(iso-propyl)carbene]pentacarbonylchromium (3b) and their respective conjugate anions, and solution-phase pKa and kinetic measurements were carried out for 3a and 3b. Major points of interest include the effect of antiaromaticity on the kinetic and thermodynamic acidities of 1d and 1e, the large effect of the phenyl group on the gas-phase acidity of 1e, the strong attenuation of the acidities and the effect of the phenyl group in acetonitrile, and the position of the C=C double bonds in the cyclobutadiene ring of the conjugate anion of 1e., (Copyright 2004 American Chemical Society)

A kinetic study of the reversible deprotonation of the rhenium carbene complexes 1H(+)(O), 1H(+)(S) and 2H(+)(O) by carboxylate ions, primary aliphatic and secondary alicyclic amines, water and OH(-) in 50% MeCN-50% water (v/v) at 25 degrees C is reported. These carbene complexes are of special interest because in their deprotonated form they represent derivatives of the aromatic heterocycles furan, thiophene and benzofuran. Intrinsic rate constants (k(o) for Delta G degrees = 0) determined from appropriate Brønsted plots for these rhenium carbene complexes and for the corresponding selenophene (1H(+)(Se)) and benzothiophene (2H(+)(S)) derivatives investigated earlier follow the orders furan < selenophene < thiophene and benzofuran less, similar benzothiophene. These orders indicate that an increase in aromaticity leads to an increase in the intrinsic rate constant or a decrease in the intrinsic barrier. This is an unexpected result; it implies that, in contrast to common resonance effects, the development of aromaticity at the transition state is ahead of proton transfer, i.e., the percentage development of the aromatic stabilization energy at the transition state is higher than the percentage of proton transfer.

We report an ab initio study of the identity carbon-to-carbon proton-transfer NCCH(2)Y + NCCH=Y(-) right arrow over left arrow NCCH=Y(-) + NCCH(2)Y in the gas phase, where Y = H, CH=CH(2), CH=O, CH=S, CN, NO, and NO(2). The main focus is on a comparison with the previously reported systems CH(3)Y + CH(2)=Y(-) right arrow over left arrow CH(2)=Y(-) + CH(3)Y, i.e., on the effect of the cyano group on acidities, proton-transfer barriers, and transition state structures. The conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) The transition state for the NCCH(2)Y/NCCH=Y(-) systems is more imbalanced than that for the CH(3)Y/CH(2)=Y(-) systems. (2) The cyano group leads to an increase in the acidities but to a decrease in the proton transfer barriers. This barrier reduction results from the fact that the stabilizing effect of the cyano group on the transition state is greater than that on the anion. (3) Within a reaction series, the barriers are largely dominated by the pi-acceptor strength of Y, i.e., the strongest pi-acceptors lead to the highest barriers. This is similar to proton transfers in solution but quite different from the CH(3)Y/CH(2)=Y(-) systems in the gas phase; in these latter systems pi-acceptor effects play a minor role while the barrier lowering field effect of Y is dominant.

Acidity constants of six substituted 1-benzyl-1-methoxy-2-nitroethylenes (2-Z with Z = m-NO(2), m-CF(3), m-Cl, H, p-Me, p-MeO) and their respective nitronic acids were determined in 50% DMSO-50% water (v/v) at 20 degrees C. Kinetic data were obtained on the reversible deprotonation of all six 2-Z by OH(-) and piperidine and on the reversible deprotonation of 2-NO(2)() by piperazine, 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine, and morpholine in the same solvent. These data allowed a determination of the Brønsted coefficients alpha (dependence on acidity of 2-Z) and beta (dependence on amine basicity). The fact that alpha > beta indicates the presence of a transition state imbalance which, however, is much smaller than that for the deprotonation of arylnitromethanes. The reasons for this reduction in the imbalance and their relevance to a recent study of the deprotonation of Fischer carbene complexes are discussed.

A kinetic study of the reversible deprotonation of substituted (methylthiophenylcarbene)pentacarbonyltungsten(0) ((CO)(5)W=C(SC(6)H(4)Z)CH(3)) and of substituted (benzoxymethylcarbene)pentacarbonyltungsten(0) ((CO)(5)W=C(OCH(2)C(6)H(4)Z)CH(3)) by primary aliphatic and secondary alicyclic amines in 50% MeCN-50% water (v/v) at 25 degrees C is reported. From the dependence of the deprotonation rate constants on amine basicity and on carbene complex acidity (variation of Z), Brønsted beta(B) and alpha(CH) values, respectively, were obtained. The alpha(CH) values were found to be smaller than the beta(B) values. These results indicate a transition state imbalance in which the loss of the carbene complex stabilizing pi-donor effect of the OCH(2)Ar and SAr groups lags behind the proton transfer. These findings confirm a previously formulated hypothesis as to how pi-donor groups attached to the carbene carbon of carbene complexes can affect transition state imbalances and mask the experimental manifestation of such imbalances. It is also shown that the transition state structure of the reactions examined in this work is subject to changes with changing amine basicity and carbene complex acidity; these changes can be expressed by p(xy)() cross correlation coefficients, which are positive.

A kinetic study of the acid-catalyzed loss of alkoxide and thiolate ions from alkoxide and thiolate ion adducts, respectively, of benzylidene Meldrum's acid (1-H), methoxybenzylidene Meldrum's acid (1-OMe), and thiomethoxybenzylidene Meldrum's acid (1-SMe) is reported. The reactions appear to be subject to general acid catalysis, although the catalytic effect of buffers is weak and the bulk of the reported data refers to H(+)-catalysis. alpha-Carbon protonation and, in some cases, protonation of one of the carbonyl oxygens to form an enol compete with alkoxide or thiolate ion expulsion. This rendered the kinetic analysis more complex but allowed the determination of pK(a) values and of proton-transfer rate constants at the alpha-carbon. In conjunction with previously reported data on the nucleophilic addition of alkoxide and thiolate ions to the same Meldrum's acid derivatives, rate constants for nucleophilic addition by the respective neutral alcohols and thiols could also be calculated. Various structure-reactivity relationships are discussed that help define transition-state structures. Comparisons with similar reactions of alkoxide ion adducts of beta-alkoxy-alpha-nitrostilbenes provide additional insights.

A kinetic study of the reaction of beta-methoxy-alpha-nitrostilbene (1-OMe) with cyanamide (CNA) over a pH range from 8.5 to 12.4 shows that it is the anion (CNA(-), pK(a) = 11.38) rather than the neutral amine that is the reactive species. Attempts at monitoring the reaction with the neutral CNA at low pH were unsuccessful because of competing hydrolysis. It is shown that the nucleophilic reactivity of CNA is abnormally low, probably because of a resonance effect, and that the reactivity of CNA(-) is high, higher than that of strongly basic oxyanion because of relatively weak solvation. The high reactivity of both 1-OMe and CNA(-) appeared to constitute favorable conditions conducive to the detection of the S(N)V intermediate, as has been the case in the reactions of 1-OMe with thiolate ions, alkoxide ions, and some amines. However, no intermediate was observed. Reasons for this failure are discussed.

The replacement of a hydrogen in nitromethane and in phenylnitromethane by the PhCO group has a strong acidifying effect, i.e., PhCOCH(2)NO(2), 5, is 5.8, 6.6, and 8.6 pK(a) units more acidic than CH(3)NO(2) in water, 50% DMSO-50% water (v/v), and 90% DMSO-10% water (v/v), respectively, and PhCOCH(Ph)NO(2), 6, is 2.0, 3.0, and 3.2 pK(a) units more acidic than PhCH(2)NO(2) in the same solvents. A major focus of this paper is an attempt to sort out the relative contributions of resonance, inductive/field, and solvation effects that lead to the increased acidities. To this end rate constants for the reversible deprotonation of 5 by secondary alicyclic amines in water, 50% DMSO-50% water (v/v), and 90% DMSO-10% water (v/v) and for the reversible deprotonation of 6 by secondary alicyclic amines, carboxylate ions, thiolate ions, and aryloxide ions in water, by secondary alicyclic and primary aliphatic amines in 50% DMSO, and by secondary alicyclic anions in 90% DMSO were determined. From Brønsted plots based on these data the intrinsic rate constants (k(o)) for the reactions of 5 and 6 with the various buffer families were obtained and compared with previously determined k(o) values for the deprotonation of CH(3)NO(2) and PhCH(2)NO(2), respectively. An analysis of the changes in k(o) induced by the introduction of the PhCO group, coupled with a comparison of solvent transfer activity coefficients for the transfer of the anions (5(-) and 6(-)) from water to 50% and 90% DMSO with those for CH(2)=NO(2)(-) and PhCH=NO(2)(-), respectively, indicates a substantial increase in the resonance stabilization of 5(-) relative to CH(2)=NO(2)(-) and a corresponding sharp drop in the solvational stabilization by hydrogen bonding from water; the effects on 6(-) are qualitatively similar but quantitatively much smaller. Our study also shows that the intrinsic rate constant for proton transfer from 6 to thiolate ions is higher than for proton transfer to aryl oxide ions and amines. This result indicates that, in contrast to most other proton-transfer reactions, hydrogen-bonding stabilization of the transition state for deprotonation of 6 is not an important factor.
