Abstract

Bose-Einstein correlations have been measured at the SPS collider at centre-of-mass energies from √ s =0.2 to 0.9 TeV. The size and the incoherence parameter of the particle emitting region have been determined as a function of charged particle density in pseudorapidity Δ n /Δη, centre-of-mass energy and the direction of emission of the charged particles. For fixed values of Δ n /Δη the size of the interaction region and the incoherence parameter remain constant with rising √ s . At fixed √ s , the size of the interaction region increases with rising charged particle density while the incoherence parameter decreases.

Abstract

The Bose-Einstein interference effect between pions of equal charge has been studied in K+p reactions at 32 GeV/c. These correlations were analysed in the framework of the Kopylov-Podgoretski-Cocconi model. The values obtained for the Kopylov parameters lie in the range of 0.8 to 1.0 fm forR, a measure of the dimensions of the pion source, and 1 to 2·10−24 s for τ, a parameter characteristic for the time evolution of particle production. The data also indicate that only a fraction λ, between 30 and 60%, of the pions interferes. The parametersR and τ show no variation with charged multiplicity, whereas λ decreases when the number of charged particles increases.

Abstract

We discuss the conditions under which Bose-Einstein correlation can be used to determine the presence of condensates. One starts from the fact that any condensate is a coherent state and uses then the formalism of quantum optics. The case of final state interactions is considered explicitly in a Landau-Ginzburg type approach as used in laser physics. By applying a mean field Hartree approximation for the many mode problem we find that the second order correlation function for identical bosons C 2 ( p 1 − p 2 =0) does effectively not depend on the phenomenological coupling constant g and thus C 2 (0) can be used to determine the amount of coherence and hence the existence of condensates. On the other hand C 2 ( p 1 − p 2 ≠0) does depend on g and therefore its measurement provides information about g . The implications of these findings for the determination of the size and lifetime of the source a la Hanbury-Brown-Twiss are discussed. Our conclusions apply both to condensates in nuclear (pion condensates, alpha and deuteron condensates) and hadronic matter.

Abstract

The Bose-Einstein correlation has been observed for pions in deep inelastic μp interactions at 280 GeV. The importance of non-interference correlations in the sample of like charge pion pairs and in the sample used for reference is discussed. The pion emission region is found to be roughly spherical in the pair rest frame with a radius of 0.46–0.84 fm and the chaos factor λ is 0.60–1.08.

It is shown that correlations between like-sign bosons (the “Bose-Einstein effect”) arise naturally in string fragmentation models for e + e − annihilation. Via the area dependence of Wilson loop integrals, the correlation length in momentum space can be related to the string tension.

Abstract

We observed Bose-Einstein correlation in pi0 pairs produced in Z0 decays using the data sample collected by the OPAL detector at LEP 1 from 1991 to 1995. Using a static Gaussian picture for the pion emitter source, we obtain the chaoticity parameter lambda = 0.55 +- 0.10 +- 0.10 and the source radius R = (0.59 +- 0.08 +- 0.05) fm. according to the JETSET and HERWIG Monte Carlo models, the Bose-Einstein correlations in our data sample largely connect pi0s originating from the decays of different hadrons. Prompt pions formed at string break-up of cluster decays only form a small fraction of the sample., 18 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The transverse dimension over which Bose-Einstein correlations between identical pions occur experimentally increases with increasing multiplicity. If the correlation length is simply proportional to the overlap of the matter distributions of the colliding hadrons on the impact-parameter plane, it must increase in the small impact-parameter collisions which produce the high multiplicity events. One thus measures the mean squared impact parameter as a function of n produced particles.

Abstract

The momentum-space correlations for n bosons emitted by a source distributed in space and time are discussed in the context of intensity interferometry for identical pions. The Metropolis algorithm is used to generate events containing such correlations to all orders via a Monte Carlo technique. Direct calculation of the probability for multiparticle correlations is practicable for n-body states up to n\ensuremath{\sim}20. Beyond this, a method which samples the symmetrized n-body probability must be used. It is observed that the traditional pair-correlation function is distorted for events with high phase-space density in a fashion consistent with the results of a simple model calculation.

Abstract

In pp and pp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings, a directional dependence of the size of the pion-emitting region is observed using Bose-Einstein interference between identical charged pions. The data reveal a substantially larger dimension in the direction parallel to the beam axis than in the transverse direction, indicating a prolate shape of the emission region. For αα interactions, the data are consistent with a spherical shape.

Abstract

Bose Einstein correlations have been measured at the SPS collider from √s = 200 to 900 GeV. The radius R of the interaction region has been determined as a function of the charged particle density Δn/Δη. For fixed values of Δn/Δη the size of the interaction region seems to remain constant with rising √s, while at fixed √s it increases with rising charged particle density. These results are coherent with observations at the ISR at lower energy, and at the SPS with ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The rate of increase of R, dR/d(dn/dη) is rather the same in all these cases.

Abstract

Measurements of two- and three-particle correlations between like-sign pions produced in e/sup +/e/sup minus/ annihilation at 29 GeV center-of-mass energy are presented. The analysis is based on data taken during the period 1982--1986 using the TPC/2..gamma.. detector at PEP. Two-particle correlations are studied as a function of Q, the momentum difference as measured in the rest frame of the pion pair, and as a function of q/sub 0/, the energy difference as measured in the lab frame. The Bose-Einstein enhancement is observed when Q is small even when the energy difference, q/sub 0/, is substantial. This observation provides evidence that the Bose-Einstein correlations are best described by a model that correctly accounts for the relativistic motion of the particle sources. Three-pion correlations are measured both by using a standard three-pion correlation function, and also by using a correlation function for which the correlations between the pairs of pions within the triplet have been subtracted. The observation of three-pion correlations after pair correlations have been subtracted supports the interpretation that the observed correlations are due to Bose-Einstein interference. 56 refs.

415. Dynamical and Bose-Einstein correlations of centrally produced pion pairs in hadron-hadron collisions

Abstract

We calculate dynamical and Bose-Einstein inclusive correlations of pion pairs (as functions of the invariant pair mass M [pi][pi]) from the decay of independently produced clusters, whose finite size is explicitly taken into account. We show that recent pp bubble chamber data from FNAL on the correlation functions C 2(M'[pi][pi]) for centrally produced [pi] + [pi] - and [pi] - [pi] - pairs can be understood within this picture. Some implications for Hanbury-Brown-Twiss type analyses are discussed.

Abstract

We generalize existing quantum-statistical approaches to multiparticle production processes in high-energy physics by studying the effects of squeezed states on second-order Bose-Einstein correlations and multiplicity distributions. The most important and surprising result is the appearance of oscillations in the multiplicity distributions. These oscillations as well as related effects of antibunching and enhanced bunching are investigated for various mixtures of squeezed coherent and chaotic distributions. The experimental situation is briefly discussed.

Abstract

We present a study of the inclusive $\omega$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ production based on 3.1 million hadronic Z decays recorded with the L3 detector at LEP during 1991--1994. The production rates per hadronic Z decay have been measured to be $1.17 \pm 0.17 $ $\omega$ mesons and $0.25 \pm 0.04 $ $\eta^{\prime}$ mesons. The production rates and the differential cross sections have been compared with predictions of the JETSET and the HERWIG Monte Carlo models. We have observed that the differential cross sections can be described by an analytical quantum chromodynamics calculation. \end{document}

Abstract

Bose-Einstein correlations are studied in semileptonic (WW --> q (q) over bar lv) and fully hadronic (WW --> q (q) over bar q (q) over bar) W-pair decays with the ALEPH detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies of 172, 183 and 189 GeV. They are compared with those made at the Z peak after correction for the different flavour compositions. A Monte Carlo model of Bose-Einstein correlations based on the JETSET hadronization scheme was tuned to the Z data and reproduces the correlations in the WW --> q (q) over bar lv events. The same Monte Carlo reproduces the correlations in the WW --> q (q) over bar q (q) over bar channel assuming independent fragmentation of the two W's. A variant of this model with Bose-Einstein correlations between decay products of different W's is disfavoured. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The production of neutral kaons in e+e− annihilation at centre-of-mass energies in the region of the Z0 mass and their Bose-Einstein correlations are investigated with the OPAL detector at LEP. A total of about 1.26×106 Z0 hadronic decay events are used in the analysis. The production rate of K0 mesons is found to be 1.99±0.01±0.04 per hadronic event, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Both the rate and the differential cross section for K0 production are compared to the predictions of Monte Carlo generators. This comparison indicates that the fragmentation is too soft in bothJetset andHerwig. Bose-Einstein correlations in Ks0Ks0 pairs are measured through the quantityQ, the four momentum difference of the pair. A threshold enhancement is observed in Ks0Ks0 pairs originating from a mixed sample of\(K^0 \bar K^0\) and K0K0 (\(\bar K^0 \bar K^0\)) pairs. For the strength of the effect and for the radius of the emitting source we find values of λ=1.14±0.23±0.32 andR0=(0.76±0.10±0.11) fm respectively. The first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Abstract

Model-independent considerations are presented for the calculation of Bose-Einstein correlation functions and momentum distributions which describe boson-emitting systems containing a central part surrounded by a large halo. If the characteristic geometrical size of the halo is sufficiently large, the contributions of central part and the halo to the invariant momentum distribution are shown to be separable. The momentum-dependence of the intercept parameter of the correlation function plays a central role. Almost all high energy reactions including lepton-lepton, lepton hadron, hadron-hadron and nuclear reactions are shown to be interpretable as boson emitting systems with large halo. The results are applied to certain high energy heavy ion data at CERN SPS. New insights are obtained for the description of low transverse momentum enhancement of pions., Z. Phys. Abstract

Two-particle correlations in invariant mass are studied separately for like-sign and unlike-sign pions. Strong correlations are observed only at small masses. The correlations decrease very rapidly for like-sign pions and slowly for unlike-sign pions, manifesting different particle dynamics. The like-sign correlations exhibit a power-law behaviour as a function of mass, compatible with the previously observed intermittency effect. The predictions of the parton shower model (JETSET 7.3) deviate significantly from the data. However, good agreement is obtained with the mass correlations, both for the unlike-sign and for the like-sign pairs if the production of the η′ and ρ0 mesons is reduced and Bose-Einstein correlations are included in the model. The value of the Bose-Einstein correlation strength is consistent with unity for pions which are produced directly or in the decays of short-lived resonances. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Correlations between pions from different W's in e(+)e(-) --> W+W- events are studied using data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP running at a centre-of-mass energy of 172 GeV in 1996. At the present level of statistics, no enhancement of the correlation function above that expected from a pair of uncorrelated W's is observed at small values of the four-momentum difference of the pions. Abstract

Bose-Einstein correlations of same-sign charged pions, produced in proton-proton collisions at a 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy, are studied using a data sample collected by the LHCb experiment. The signature for Bose-Einstein correlations is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of like-sign charged pions with small four-momentum difference squared. The charged-particle multiplicity dependence of the Bose-Einstein correlation parameters describing the correlation strength and the size of the emitting source is investigated, determining both the correlation radius and the chaoticity parameter. The measured correlation radius is found to increase as a function of increasing charged-particle multiplicity, while the chaoticity parameter is seen to decrease.

Abstract

The invariant spectra of pi- mesons produced in (pi+/K+)p interactions at 250 GeV/c are analysed in the framework of the hydrodynamical model of three-dimensionally expanding cylindrically symmetric finite systems. A satisfactory description of experimental data is achieved. The data favour the pattern according to which the hadron matter undergoes predominantly longitudinal expansion and non-relativistic transverse expansion with mean transverse velocity = 0.20(7), and is characterized by a large temperature inhomogeneity in the transverse direction: the extracted freeze-out temperature at the center of the tube and at the transverse rms radius are 140(3) MeV and 82(7) MeV, respectively. The width of the (longitudinal) space-time rapidity distribution of the pion source is found to be Delta eta = 1.36(2). Combining this estimate with results of the Bose-Einstein correlation analysis in the same experiment, one extracts a mean freeze-out time of the source of = 1.4(1) fm/c and its transverse geometrical rms radius, R_G (rms)=1.2(2) fm., Comment: latex, 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In a recent article published in this journal it is stated that a specific three-pion effect is found in an experiment studying Au+Au collisions. The aim of this note is to show that these new data are compatible with two-pion effects leaving no room for a specific three-pion effect. This is in accordance with three-pion interferometry results from pp and e+ e− collisions at a high energy.
