Professional psychologists often work collaboratively with physicians on the comanagement of psychological distress and cardiac disease. This article reviews the biopsychosocial assessment and treatment of implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) patients. The ICD automatically delivers lifesaving electrical shocks to prevent sudden cardiac death, the leading cause of death in the United States, Recent clinical trial data indicate increasing future use. The overall benefit of the ICD, however, may be diminished by the significant psychological distress of receiving a shock. Psychological theories such as classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and cognitive appraisal theories provide significant guidance to the prescribed psychological care of ICD patients. ICD-specific education. ICD-specific behavioral therapy, and traditional clinical strategies are recommended to deliver tailored care to ICD patients and their families.

Hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline in older adults. Research has shown that hearing loss negatively affects cognitive screening test measures as patients may mishear verbally administered questions. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of amplification on performance on a commonly used cognitive screening test. Thirty older adults with hearing loss underwent testing with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in three conditions: without hearing aids, with hearing aids, and with a personal listening device (PLD). Performance on the MMSE significantly improved with the use of hearing aids or a PLD. Amplification and the use of communication strategies should be considered when administering cognitive screening measures to older adults. Failure to account for hearing status may lead to invalid results and can increase the likelihood of over-referral for further assessment. Poplar and willow demonstrate great potential for the phytoextraction of trace elements (TEs) from soils. In most cases, these species are managed as short-rotation coppice, producing high woody biomass yields, which could provide a valuable contribution toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. In the current study, we compared the TE extraction and CO2 sequestration rates in a four-year field trial in Southern Italy of two arboreal species (willow and poplar). The results show that, once established in the study area, willow extracted more Cd and Cu and less Pb than poplar. The two species demonstrated the same average Ni and Zn extraction rates. Greater biomass yields in poplar suggest that this species was able to fix greater amounts of CO2 (28.7 Mg ha&minus, 1 yr&minus, 1) than willow (24.9 Mg ha&minus, 1). We argue that the choice of the species to be used in phytoextraction should first be made considering the TE-specific affinity and phytoextraction rates. For TEs whose extraction rates were the same (i.e., Ni and Zn), poplar is to be preferred because of its ability to fix greater amounts of CO2 than willow.

DAMPE (DArk Matter Particle Explorer) is a spaceborne high-energy cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector , successfully launched in December 2015. It is designed to probe astroparticle physics in the broad energy range from few GeV to 100 TeV. The scientific goals of DAMPE include the identification of possible signatures of Dark Matter annihilation or decay, the study of the origin and propagation mechanisms of cosmic-ray particles, and gamma-ray astronomy . DAMPE consists of four sub-detectors: a plastic scintillator strip detector, a Silicon–Tungsten tracKer–converter (STK), a BGO calorimeter and a neutron detector . The STK is composed of six double layers of single-sided silicon micro-strip detectors interleaved with three layers of tungsten for photon conversions into electron–positron pairs . The STK is a crucial component of DAMPE, allowing to determine the direction of incoming photons, to reconstruct tracks of cosmic rays and to estimate their absolute charge (Z). We present the in-flight performance of the STK based on two years of in-flight DAMPE data, which includes the noise behavior, signal response, thermal and mechanical stability, alignment and position resolution.
