Binary classification has numerous applications. For one, lie detection methods typically aim to classify each tested person either as “liar” or as “truthteller” based on the given test results. To infer practical implications, as well as to compare different methods, it is essential to assess the diagnostic efficiency, such as demonstrating the number of correctly classified persons. However, this is not always straightforward. In Concealed Information Tests (CITs), the key predictor value (probe-irrelevant difference) for “truthtellers” is always similar (zero on average), and “liars” are always distinguished by a larger value (i.e., a larger number resulting from the CIT test, as compared to the zero baseline). Thereby, in general, the larger predictor values a given CIT method obtains for “liars” on average, the better this method is assumed to be. This has indeed been assumed in countless studies, and therefore, when comparing the classification efficiencies of two different designs, the mean difference of “liar” predictor values in the two designs were simply compared to each other (hence not collecting “truthteller” data to spare resources). We show, based on the meta-data of 12 different experimental designs collected in response time-based CIT studies, that differences in dispersion (i.e., variance in the data, e.g. the extent of random deviations from the zero average in case of “truthtellers”) can substantially influence classification efficiency–to the point that, in extreme cases, one design may even be superior in classification despite having a larger mean “liar” predictor value. However, we also introduce a computer simulation procedure to estimate classification efficiency in the absence of “truthteller” data, and validate this procedure via a meta-analysis comparing outcomes based on empirical data versus simulated data.

Messages to promote health behavior are essential when considering health promotion, disease prevention, and healthy life expectancy. The present study aimed to examine whether (1) positive and negative goal-framing messages affect message memory and behavioral intention differently in younger, middle-aged, and older adults, (2) framing effects are mediated by interest in health (health promotion and disease prevention) and emotion regulation (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), and (3) mediation effects differ between positive and negative frames. Participants (N = 1248) aged 20 to 70 years were divided into positive and negative frame conditions. Framing demonstrated interactive effects on message memory; all age groups showed higher recognition accuracy in the positive than the negative frame. The accuracy of younger adults was higher than that of older adults in the negative frame, while older adults showed higher accuracy than younger adults in the positive frame. Additionally, recognition accuracy was higher in the positive frame, as participants had higher interest in health promotion and used cognitive reappraisal more frequently. Contrariwise, emotion regulation and interest in health promotion did not have significant effects on memory in negative frames. Moreover, regardless of the message valence, age did not influence behavioral intention directly but was mediated by interest in health and emotion regulation, while the older the participants were, the higher their interest in health, resulting in higher intention. For emotion regulation, intention increased with higher reappraisal scores and decreased with increasing suppression. Our results suggest that interest in health and emotion regulation should be considered when examining the relationship between age and goal-framing for health messages.

O presente artigo objetiva apresentar um manual técnico para sub-sidiar processos de implementação do método de casos como ferramenta de gestão do conhecimento no âmbito do Ministério Público de Minas Gerais (MPMG), podendo servir de base para outros órgãos da administração pública. O método de casos tem sido utilizado na literatura gerencial, inclusive no setor público, como ferramenta de aprendizagem organizacional para criar, adquirir, desenvolver, transferir e reter conhecimentos. O manual consistiu em produto técnico derivado de pesquisa de campo que investigou se o método de escrita de casos pode ser aplicado efetivamente para a criação e disseminação de conhecimento organizacional pela Escola Institucional do Ministério Público do Estado de Minas Gerais. A construção desse manual teve por objetivo subsidiar o processo de escrita e construção de casos e apresentar a metodologia paraa formação docente naquele órgão. A coleta de dados se deu a partir de revi-são de literatura narrativa e sistemática, pesquisa documental e de entrevistassemiestruturadas, e a análise dos dados ocorreu por análise de conteúdo. Aanálise dos dados corroborou a literatura no sentido de que o método de casosretrata o conhecimento tácito e sistematiza e registra experiências relevantes,consistindo em ferramenta importante para o aprimoramento da prática jurídica

RESUMO Objetivo: identificar na literatura os atributos do conceito "insuficiência familiar" na pessoa idosa. Método: análise crítica da literatura. Resultados: insuficiência familiar se caracteriza como um processo de interação psicossocial de estrutura complexa, fundado especialmente no baixo apoio social da pessoa idosa e no vínculo familiar prejudicado. Tem como antecedentes as transformações contemporâneas no sistema familiar, os conflitos intergeracionais, o comprometimento das relações familiares e a vulnerabilidade social da família. As consequências da insuficiência familiar incluem a vulnerabilidade social da pessoa idosa, o declínio da saúde psicológica e funcional, a menor qualidade de vida e o envelhecimento mal sucedido. Elaborou-se uma proposta teórica inédita para o conceito de insuficiência familiar na pessoa idosa com os atributos, antecedentes e consequentes identificados. Conclusão: os achados deste estudo constituem avanço teórico em relação à Síndrome Insuficiência Familiar na pessoa idosa, oferecendo dados para futuras pesquisas de campo no desenvolvimento do conceito.

The present article is the result of a research made by Mathematics students in the Tutorial Education Program. The goal is to explore the aspects of Mathematics History related to the geometrical resolution of quadratic equations, searching historical elements to complement the teaching of this topic in Mathematics classes of Elementary School, making it more concrete and interesting for students. The work was developed in group through bibliographic research and theoretical study, including seminars, exercises and geometrical interpretations. The Babylonian method was explored, as well as the geometrical solution presented by the arab Al-Khwarizmi. We concluded that the historical approach is important as a motivational element and of support of learning, instead of teaching based on prepared formulas without meaning to the student.

CONTEXT: Over the past few years, several clinical trials have been performed to analyze the effects of exercise training on walking ability in patients with intermittent claudication (IC). However, it remains unclear which type of physical exercise provides the maximum benefits in terms of walking ability. OBJECTIVE: To analyze, by means of a meta-analysis, the effects of walking and strength training on the walking capacity in patients with IC. METHODS: Papers analyzing the effects of walking and strength training programs in patients with IC were browsed on the Medline, Lilacs, and Cochrane databases. Randomized clinical trials scoring >4 on the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale and assessing claudication distance (CD) and total walking distance (TWD) were included in the review. RESULTS: Walking and strength training yielded increases in CD and TWD (P < 0.05). However, walking training yielded greater increases than strength training (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Walking and strength training improve walking capacity in patients with IC. However, greater improvements in TWD are obtained with walking training.

O presente artigo é resultado de um trabalho de pesquisa de alunos do Curso de Licenciatura em Matemática no âmbito do Programa de Educação Tutorial. O objetivo é explorar aspectos da História da Matemática relacionados à resolução geométrica de equações quadráticas, buscando subsídios históricos para complementar o ensino deste tópico nas aulas de Matemática do Ensino Básico, tornando-o mais concreto e interessante para os alunos. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em grupo através de pesquisa bibliográfica e estudo teórico, incluindo seminários, exercícios e interpretações geométricas. Foi explorado o método babilônico, bem como a solução geométrica apresentada pelo árabe Al-Khwarizmi. Concluímos que a abordagem histórica é importante como elemento motivacional e de apoio para o aprendizado, em lugar de basear o ensino em fórmulas prontas e sem significado para o aluno.

O método auscultatório tem sido sugerido como opção viável para a medida da pressão arterial (PA) durante o exercício de força. Todavia, os indicadores de reprodutibilidade deste método durante o exercício de força ainda não foram estabelecidos. O objetivo do estudo foi analisar a reprodutibilidade intra e interavaliadores da medida da PA auscultatória obtida durante o exercício de força. Quatorze sujeitos (24±5 anos; 22,0±2,4 kg/m2; PA sistólica: 116±7 mmHg e PA diastólica: 75±4 mmHg) realizaram três séries de 15 repetições, com 50% de 1-repetição máxima no exercício extensão de joelhos em dois momentos distintos (M1 e M2). Antes e durante os séries, a PA sistólica e diastólica foram medidas em ambos os braços simultaneamente por dois avaliadores. O coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC) intra-avaliador da PA sistólica foi de 0,75 (0,57–0,86) e 0,76 (0,59–0,87) para os avaliadores 1 e 2, respectivamente. Além disso, os valores da PA sistólica foram similares entre o M1 e M2, tanto para o avaliador 1 (144±9 vs 146±18, p=0,08), como para o avaliador 2 (152±9 vs. 153±12, p=0,32). O ICC interavaliadores da PA sistólica foi 0,68 (0,46 – 0,82) e o da PA diastólica foi de 0,21 (0,11–0,50). Pode-se concluir que a medida auscultatória da PA sistólica durante o exercício de força apresenta reprodutibilidade intra e interavaliadores, variando de 0,68 a 0,76, ao passo que a medida PA diastólica, durante o exercício de força, apresenta baixos níveis de reprodutibilidade.

La popularidad de la hidrogimnasia crece considerablemente entre los ancianos. Esta investigación ha analizado por qué la tercera edad inicia esta actividad. Se ha investigado 43 individuosn Piracicaba (Brasil) y 29 en Fort Collins (Estados Unidos). Las características de los participantes han sido analizadas según el porcentaje de incidencia y las respuestas para la pregunta que se plantea: "Por qué usted ha empezado a hacer hidrogimnasia?" a través de una propuesta de Moreira, Simões e Porto (2005) para la Análisis de Contenido: Técnica de Elaboración e Análisis de Unidades de Significado. En Piracicaba un 58% de los mayores ha empezado a practicarla siguiendo órdenes médicas, sin embargo en Fort Collins un 76% lo ha buscado para mantenerse sano. Resultados contrastivos están relacionados a las condiciones y divulgación de los programas públicos ofrecidos a ese grupo.

In an attempt to improve the performance of organolanthanide catalysts we investigated the use of the industrially important cocatalyst methylaluminoxane (MAO) to activate organolanthanide compounds in olefin polymerization. The catalytic systems LnBrCp2(THF)2/MAO (Cp=cyclopentadienyl) and LnBrCp*2THF/MAO (Cp*= pentamethylcyclopentadienyl), Ln=Pr and Yb, were active in styrene polymerization but inactive in ethylene and propylene polymerization. These systems produced atactic polystyrene with conversions of up to 8.2% (PrBrCp*2THF, Al/Ln=200, T=80ºC, t=4 h) in toluene. In the absence of solvent, the conversion is 26.0% (1.5 h) and the molar mass of the atactic polystyrene is almost ten times higher (43 kg/mol).

Objetivo: Revisar sistematicamente os métodos de prescrição do treinamento físico utilizados em indivíduos com claudicação intermitente. Método: Foi realizada revisão sistemática da literatura nas bases de dados Medline e Lilacs. Foram selecionados estudos longitudinais que analisaram os efeitos do treinamento físico em pacientes com doença arterial obstrutiva periférica (DAOP), publicados entre 1980 e 2009. Resultados: No total, 19 estudos foram incluídos. A forma de exercício físico mais utilizada foi a caminhada (n=18, 94,0%). A duração da sessão variou de 20 a 60 minutos e a freqüência de duas a três sessões semanais. Para a prescrição da intensidade do exercício físico, o método mais utilizado foi a dor (n=10, 52,6%), seguido da intensidade relativa da carga máxima atingida no teste (n=6, 31,6%). Todavia, não existe consenso quanto à intensidade a ser utilizada, tanto na prescrição baseada na dor quanto nabaseada na carga máxima atingida no teste. Conclusão: Duas a três sessões de caminhada, com duração de 20 a 60 min tem sido a prescrição mais utilizada para indivíduos com DAOP. Todavia, a intensidade do exercício físico a ser utilizada nessa população ainda não apresenta consenso entre os estudos.

A paralisia facial, uma afecção que acomete eqüinos, é comum na medicina veterinária e decorre principalmente de traumatismos diretos ou indiretos sobre o nervo facial, que passa sobre o músculo masseter, contando apenas com a pele e o tecido subcutâneo para sua proteção. As paralisias têm origem na compressão causada pela contenção da cabeça do animal em decúbito lateral. Este trabalho relata dois casos de paralisia facial. Um deles é de uma égua PSI de quatro anos de idade, atendida no Hospital Veterinário da Escola de Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Goiás, com sinais clínicos dessa lesão. O outro é de um cavalo de carroça atendido no Jóquei Clube de Goiás (Hipódromo da Lagoinha), de aproximadamente 10 anos de idade, debilitado e com habronemose na face. Trata-se de animais que receberam tratamento fisioterapêutico, por meio de cinesioterapia e eletroestimulação, por sessenta dias, cujos resultados foram satisfatórios, verificando-se melhora do tônus muscular labial à esquerda, realinhamento da narina esquerda, discreta ptose no lábio inferior, normalização do ato de se alimentar e melhora da estética facial. A fisioterapia constituiu-se assim, num método terapêutico eficaz no tratamento de afecções do nervo facial, como compressão, contribuindo para o retorno da função muscular e bem-estar dos animais tratados. OBJETIVO: Analisar a percepção sobre a dor durante a caminhada em idosos com claudicação intermitente e como eles utilizam a religiosidade para superar o sintoma doloroso. MÉTODOS: A amostra foi composta por dez integrantes de um programa de treinamento físico que apresentavam sintomas de claudicação intermitente. Foi traçado um perfil da população, contendo dados sociodemográficos e religiosos; e realizou-se entrevista com base em roteiro de entrevista semiestruturada. Utilizou-se o procedimento da estatística descritiva para os dados numéricos e as falas dos sujeitos foram submetidas ao software Analysis of Qualitative Data (AQUAD) e posteriormente analisadas por meio da análise de conteúdo temática. RESULTADOS: Os resultados evidenciaram que os sujeitos apresentaram sentimentos negativos frente à dor ao caminhar, tais como aborrecimento, tristeza e medo. Ao mesmo tempo, eles acreditavam que a religião e a crença da existência de um Ser Superior os ajudavam a superar a dor nas pernas. CONCLUSÃO: A fé e a religiosidade parecem funcionar como ferramentas de superação da dor durante a caminhada dos idosos com claudicação intermitente.

Resumo Levando em conta a recente inserção de Obstetrizes formadas pelo Curso de Obstetrícia da Escola de Artes, Ciências e Humanidades da Universidade de São Paulo no Sistema Único de Saúde, esta pesquisa teve como propósito analisar como se deu a inserção dessas profissionais nos serviços públicos de saúde. Para isso, foi realizada pesquisa de campo, descritiva e de natureza qualitativa. Os sujeitos da pesquisa compreenderam oito egressas do Curso de Obstetrícia que estivessem trabalhando no ano de 2014 em instituições estaduais ou municipais que fazem parte do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) de São Paulo. A coleta de informações ocorreu por meio de entrevista semiestruturada com questões norteadoras acerca das experiências vivenciadas pelas Obstetrizes em seu trabalho no SUS. A análise possibilitou o delineamento de quatro categorias temáticas: As obstretrizes nos hospitais: estranhamento por não saber o que é; Práticas e desafios na inserção das Obstetrizes no SUS; Entre o ideal e o possível: o cotidiano de trabalho no SUS; A repercussão do trabalho das Obstetrizes entre as usuárias. Os relatos mostram que são vários os desafios enfrentados no cenário da atenção obstétrica nos hospitais públicos, não só pelas Obstetrizes como também para os demais profissionais de saúde e, principalmente, pelas mulheres e bebês, e indicam que as pequenas mudanças ocorridas no cotidiano do trabalho só são possíveis porque são realizadas coletivamente e contribuem para o fortalecimento do SUS.

In this work, we report elastic integral, differential, and momentum-transfer cross sections for the scattering of low-energy electrons by salicylic acid. The cross sections were calculated with the Schwinger multichannel method implemented with norm-conserving pseudopotential within the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization (SEP) approximations for energies up to 15 eV. In the SEP approximation, four π* resonances were found at around 0.023, 1.27, 3.60, and 6.80 eV. While the first three are shape resonances, the latter has a mixed shape and core-excited shape character. We compare our results with available measurements in the literature, and we also discuss the role of the second resonance in the production of [M-H] - and [M-H 2 ] - species through dissociative electron attachment.

Elastic low-energy electron collisions with methyl formate have been studied theoretically at the level of various theories. The elastic integral cross section was calculated using Schwinger multichannel and R-matrix methods, in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization levels of approximations for energies up to 15 eV. The absolute total cross section for electron scattering from methyl formate has been measured in a wide energy range (0.2-300 eV) using a 127° electron spectrometer working in the linear transmission configuration. The integral elastic and the absolute total cross sections display a π* shape resonance at around 1.70-1.84 eV, which can be related to the resonance visible for formic acid, and a broad structure located at 7-8 eV, which can be associated to a superposition of σ* shape resonances. Our results were compared with theoretical and experimental results available in the literature and with the results of electron collisions with formic acid. The additivity rule was used to estimate the total cross section of methyl formate and the results agree well with the experimental data.

The Schwinger multichannel method is employed in calculations of the elastic integral and differential cross sections for collisions of low-energy electrons and positrons with para -difluorobenzene (1,4-C 6 H 4 F 2 ). The present calculations involving electron scattering have been performed using both static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization levels of approximation. Our results indicate the presence of three resonances of π*-character in the low-energy region and a fourth resonance, of σ*-character, at higher energy levels. With respect to the positron scattering, the calculations were conducted using the static plus polarization approximation at three different polarization levels. The present calculated electron and positron cross sections show a reasonable agreement with the total cross sections measured by Makochekanwa et al. ( J. Phys. B , 2004, 37 , 1841). It is also important to highlight that our computed integral cross section for electron scattering indicates the presence of a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum, while the integral cross section for positron scattering indicates the presence of a virtual state.

High-resolution photoabsorption cross-sections in the 3.7-10.8 eV energy range are reinvestigated for nitromethane (CH 3 NO 2 ), while for nitroethane (C 2 H 5 NO 2 ), they are reported for the first time. New absorption features are observed for both molecules which have been assigned to vibronic excitations of valence, Rydberg, and mixed valence-Rydberg characters. In comparison with nitromethane, nitroethane shows mainly broad absorption bands with diffuse structures, which can be interpreted as a result of the side-chain effect contributing to an increased number of internal degrees of freedom. New theoretical quantum chemical calculations performed at the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) level were used to qualitatively help interpret the recorded photoabsorption spectra. From the photoabsorption cross-sections, photolysis lifetimes in the terrestrial atmosphere have been obtained for both compounds. Relevant internal conversion from Rydberg to valence character is noted for both molecules, while the nuclear dynamics of CH 3 NO 2 and C 2 H 5 NO 2 along the C-N reaction coordinate have been evaluated through potential energy curves at the TD-DFT level of theory, showing that the pre-dissociative character is more prevalent in nitromethane than in nitroethane.

This work reports a theoretical investigation on the elastic-positron collision with the 1,1-difluoroethylene molecule for energies up to 10 eV. We have employed the Schwinger multichannel method in the static-plus polarization level of approximation to obtain the integral and differential cross sections. In order to account for the long-range potential due to the permanent dipole moment of the target, the Born-closure procedure has been employed. Also, our present differential cross sections have been applied to estimate a correction to the total cross section measurements available in the literature.

Working memory is one of the most important topics of research in cognitive psychology. The cognitive revolution that introduced the computer metaphor to describe human cognitive functioning called for this system in charge of the temporary storage of incoming or retrieved information to permit its processing. In the past decades, one particular mechanism of maintenance, attentional refreshing, has attracted an increasing amount of interest in the field of working memory. However, this mechanism remains rather mysterious, and its functioning is conceived in very different ways across the literature. This article presents an up-to-date review on attentional refreshing through the joint effort of leading researchers in the domain.
