Abstract

[Display omitted] • Facile method was used to prepare multifunctional zwitterionic surfactants. • Surfactants were applied for demulsification of Arabian crude oil emulsions. • The effect of sulfone functionalization on the demulsification process was studied. • Multifunctional zwitterionic surfactants showed high and fast demulsification efficiency. We report an easy process to prepare new anionic and zwitterionic surfactants to break water in Arabian heavy crude oil emulsions (W/O) with different compositions (10/90, 30/70 and 50/50 vol%). Surfactants were prepared in only two stages using simple methodology. Diethylenetriamine was interacted with three moles of glycidyl 4-nonyl ether followed by the interaction with 3 and 8 mol of 1,3-propanesultone to yield TNDTS-3 and TNDTS-8 respectively. FTIR and NMR spectroscopies were carried out to substantiate the chemical structures of surfactants. Relative solubility number (RSN), surface activity and solubility properties were determined. Demulsification efficiencies and interfacial tension (IFT) of the prepared surfactants were investigated. Our findings demonstrated that increasing propyl sulfonate groups in the surfactant structure improved water solubility, IFT activity and demulsification efficiency. TNDTS-8 achieved 100 % demulsification activities in all W/O emulsions (10/90, 30/70 and 50/50 vol%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This present study focuses on evaluation of mechanical properties of three dimensional (3D)-printed carbon fiber/polylactic acid (CF/PLA) composites, using fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique. The composites were prepared with different slicing parameters: layer heights or thicknesses, infill densities and layer patterns. The 3D-printed composite samples were subjected to tensile, flexural and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests to assess the influence of the process parameters on their mechanical characteristics. Further investigations were carried out to evaluate the effect of surface roughness of the samples. From the test results, it was evident that both rectilinear and hexagonal layer patterns exhibited better mechanical properties at infill density and layer thickness of 60% and 0.64 mm, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images depicted that lesser layer thickness produced poor CF/PLA interfacial bonding and major failure mode was traced to fiber pull-out. Abstract

Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) hybrid composites builds vertically due to the achievement of custom-made properties with lightweight. However, these materials have finding limitations in exceptional circumstances due to the unpredicted sustainability. Hence, it is necessary to create the database for the durable and sustainable low-density FRP hybrid composites with the support of significant experimental investigations. This review paper is mainly covers durability studies of various FRP hybrid composites under different environmental conditions. The thermal ageing, hydrothermal ageing, sea water, acid and alkali environment, ultraviolet radiation and stress cycle effects were extensively discussed with suitable scientific evidence in this work. Further, most of the FRP composites are rapidly degraded by underwater conditions at high temperatures. The failure mechanisms such as delamination, degradation of fibre and matrix, poor interfacial adhesion, matrix surface cracking, etc. are found to be dominant in the FRP composites under the hydrothermal and acid environment conditions also covered. The combination of natural/synthetic hybrid composites and addition of some nano fillers enhance the durability performance of hybrid composites significantly. However, ageing properties of hybrid polymer composites in different environment conditions need to study for various applications. The review process revealed that the life cycles of hybrid FRP composites mainly affected by stress cycle based on continuous usage. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.
