Abstract Utilization of the space environment provides invaluable opportunities for researchers to fulfill challenging tasks that are impossible on Earth. Longtime sustainable containerless and simultaneously weightless condition is a desirable physical environment that can be easily obtained in outer space. However, in a space station, due to unpredictable disturbances, i.e., g-jitter, objects that are floating in containerless and weightless conditions may not be able to stay motionless at a specific location, making it difficult to conduct any investigation of the objects. In this study, we propose a method to confine objects without energy consumption using permanent magnets. Two types of confinement apparatuses made of permanent magnets were designed and manufactured. The apparatuses were used to demonstrate the capability of the magnetic field to confine diamagnetic objects without mechanical contact. We took confinement of a water droplet as an example and calculated the confinement performance of the two apparatuses. The results showed that the idea of using permanent magnets to confine diamagnetic objects without energy consumption in the space environment is feasible. Compared with other confinement methods, such as ultrasound and electrostatic confinement methods, the method proposed in this study is simple, efficient and inexpensive. Most importantly, the confined objects are restricted in a region with a low magnetic field. These advantages enable the method a potentially useful alternative for studying objects under containerless and weightless condition in space. Mechanical shear resistance of wheat grain is a significant concern for the designers and researchers related to the design of threshing, handling and processing machinery of the field crops. The grain mechanical properties directly affect the machine geometry and its operational parameters. The present study was carried out to determine the shear resistance of five wheat varieties (Locally names; TD-02, Sindhu-1105, Benazir, China and SKD-118) influenced by moisture content (16.7%, 18.7% and 19.5%) and loading rate (3 mm/s, 6 mm/s and 9 mm/s). However, some physio-dimensional properties (length, width, thickness, slenderness ratio, surface area and sphericity) were obtained at different moisture contents. The results showed that the shear resistance reduced by increasing the moisture content and loading rate. The average shear resistance decreased from 10.45 N to 3.74 N for 3-9 mm/s loading rate at moisture content of 16.7% to 19.5%. Thus, the maximum correlation (r = 0.905) of shear resistance obtained at 16.7%, whereas minimum correlation (r = 0.692) obtained at 19.5%. The shear resistance of wheat grain was highly significant (p<0.05) at 9 mm/s for 19.5%. Shear resistance decreased with an increase in the moisture content in the grain whereas deformation is increasing with the increase of moisture content. However, the maximum bulk density of wheat grain obtained at 19.5% for SKD-118, while the minimum obtained at 16.7% for TD-02. Electrospinning is a powerful method for preparing porous materials that can be applied as biomedical materials for implantation or tissue engineering or as scaffolds for 3D cell culture experiments. However, this technique is limited in practical applications because the pore size of 3D scaffolds directly prepared by conventional electrospinning is usually less than several tens of micrometres, which may not be suitable for 3D cell culture and tissue growth. To allow for satisfactory 3D cell culture and tissue engineering, the pore size of the scaffold should be controllable according to the requirement of the specific cells to be cultured. Here, we show that layer-structured scaffolds with pore sizes larger than 100 μm can be obtained by stacking meshes prepared by direct-writing using the near-field electrospinning (NFES) technique. In the study, we prepared composite scaffolds made of polycaprolactone (PCL) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) via the above-mentioned method and tested the effectiveness of the novel scaffold in cell culture using mouse pre-osteoblast cells (MC3T3-E1). The pore size and the degradability of the PCL/HAp scaffolds were characterized. The results showed that the average pore size of the scaffolds was 167 μm, which was controllable based on the required application; the degradation rate was controllable depending on the ratio of PCL to HAp. The biocompatibility of the scaffolds in vitro was studied, and it was found that the scaffolds showed no toxicity and that the cells could effectively attach, proliferate, and differentiate in the 3D skeleton of the scaffolds. Our studies showed that a simple modification of the preparation procedure can lead to a new way to fabricate novel layer-structured 3D scaffolds with controllable structures and pore sizes suitable for practical applications in implantation, tissue engineering and 3D cell culture. Purpose: To evaluate the association between patient's knowledge of Hepatitis-B and Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). Methods: A cross sectional, descriptive study was undertaken with 390 hepatitis-B patients attending two public hospitals in Quetta City, Pakistan. Knowledge of hepatitis-B was assessed using a pre-validated questionnaire. European Quality of Life scale was used for the assessment of HRQoL. Descriptive analysis was used to elaborate patients' demographic characteristics while inferential statistics were applied to report the association among study variables. Spearman's rho correlation was used to identify the association between variables. Results: Out of 390, (230, 59.5 %) were males and the mean age of the subjects was 36.2 ± 9.2 years. One hundred and three (26 %) had primary level of education and 109 (27.9 %) were employees in the private sector. Eighty four (21 %) had a monthly income of between 10001-15000 Pakistan rupees (1 PKR = 0.0115527 USD) with 272 (69.7 %) respondents resident in urban areas. Mean HRQoL and Hepatitis-B related knowledge (HBRK) scores were categorized as poor (0.37± 0.3) and (8.52 ± 2.7) respectively. The correlation coefficient between HRQoL and HBRK was -0.102 (p < 0.001), indicating a week negative association between the study variables. Conclusion: The findings indicate a negative association between Hepatitis-B related knowledge and HRQoL. Therefore, providing disease-related knowledge to patients does not necessarily improve HRQoL. Considering the era of industrialization and increasing growth of interest in the green bioconversion of biomass into efficient value-added products, this review discusses the hydrogen (H 2) production using the hyperthermophilic bacteria as a promising strategy for the agriculture and industrial purposes towards the generation of clean energy. Production of microbial enzymes through hyperthermophiles is beneficial as they are more resistant and stable in a controlled closed production system. Among hyperthermophile bacteria, thermotogales include species with the ability to grow optimally at temperatures ≥80 °C and to produce high yields of H 2. Thermostable enzymes are able to degrade different biomass materials and produce H 2 , it attained much attention for the scholars and have been used at the industrial scale. The biohydrogen pathways of thermotogales and the obstacles during the fermentation process need to be deeply examined. Therefore, this work critically reviewed the hydrogen production of Thermotoga species and their application to different biomass. Moreover, a critical discussion on the hyperthermophilic hydrogenic bacteria is provided followed by its genetic modifications and challenges associated to realize its future sustainability. In addition, this paper discusses the challenges of improving hydrogen production. The escalating contamination caused by lead ions (Pb 2 ⁺) and its harmful effects on all life forms has raised global concerns. Certain microalgae thrive in metal mining sites characterized by low pH and high concentrations of Pb 2 ⁺, which are usually prohibitive for many microorganisms. Little is known about the mechanisms underlying the adaptation of such microalgae to these hostile conditions. In this study, we elucidated the adaptive strategies of the green microalga Micractinium belenophorum strain AUMW, isolated from a lead mining site, and its application for the removal of Pb +2 . Results revealed that strain AUMW can efficiently tolerate up to 200 ppm of Pb +2 in an F/2 medium. Further experimental variables were optimized through response surface methodology (RSM), and 99.6 % removal of Pb 2 ⁺ was achieved. Novel adaptive responses of strain AUMW to high levels of Pb 2 ⁺ include: (i) activation of metal-protective response by modulation of quantum yield ( F v /F m ) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of photosystem II; (ii) extracellular silicification encapsulated cells of strain AUMW and altered cell morphology from oval to hexagonal; (iii) silicification prevented intracellular translocation of Pb +2 ; (iv) silicification boosted adsorption of Pb +2 , thus enhanced its removal. This study offers new insights into the protective role of silicification in green microalgae and its potential for the removal of metals from metal-polluted sites, waste from energy storage battery industries, and spent batteries. In today's corporate world, a company's long-term viability and prosperity depend on its corporate governance practices. The present study investigates the interplay between financial misrepresentation, earnings management, and corporate governance within the context of Pakistan. To estimate the financial data of enterprises obtained from non-financial organizations listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange a panel regression analysis was conducted. The analysis covered the time from 2009 to 2020 and employed quantitative data. The findings of the study show that the different aspects of corporate governance mechanisms have varying levels of influence. Specifically, remuneration paid to directors had a significant impact on financial misstatement, while the size of the board strongly impacts the earning management. The financial misstatement was also found affected by the earning management. The M score (statistical model used to predict the probability of financial misstatement) positively influenced when board diligence was incorporated in the mediation of earning management. It is important to note that this study only considers the internal governance mechanisms of firms, suggesting that future research could benefit from the inclusion of external governance mechanisms for a more holistic model. This study is aligned with the ESG's governance aspects and SDG-17, providing valuable insights for specialists, financial backers, policymakers, and experts. The results of this study catalyze further research in this area and can aid in achieving SDG 17 by raising awareness of the significance of good governance practices, ethical reporting that leads to sustainable firm performance, and ensuring long-term economic growth and development., (© 2023. Aim: Hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide possess cytoprotective activity and in vivo, they are generated from exogenous sodium hydrosulfide and L-arginine respectively. Cisplatin is a major chemotherapeutic agent used to treat cancer and has a high incidence of nephrotoxicity as a side effect. The study aim was to explore the effects of NaHS and L-arginine or their combination on cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity in rats., Methods: Wistar Kyoto rats were given a single intraperitoneal dose of cisplatin (5 mg/kg) followed either by NaHS (56 μmol/kg, i. p.), L-arginine (1.25 g/L in drinking water) or their combination daily for 28-days. Post-mortem plasma, urine and kidney samples were collected for biochemical assays and histopathological analysis., Results: Cisplatin decreased body weights and increased urinary output, while plasma creatinine and urea levels were elevated, but sodium and potassium concentrations were diminished. The renal function parameters, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine clearance, were raised and decreased respectively. Regarding markers of reactive oxygen species, plasma total superoxide dismutase was reduced, whereas malondiadehyde was augmented.Cisplatin also diminished plasma and urinary H 2 S as well as plasma NO, while NaHS and L-arginine counteracted this activity on both redox-active molecules. Microalga-microbiome interactions are central to both health and disease of aquatic environments. Despite impressive advances in deciphering how microorganisms participate in and impact aquatic ecosystems, the evolution and ecological involvement of microalgae and the microbiome in polluted waters are typically studied independently. Here, the phycosphere (i.e., the consortia of microalgae and the related microbiome) is regarded as an independent and integrated life form, and we summarize the survival strategies exhibited by this symbiont when exposed to anthropogenic pollution. We highlight the cellular strategies and discuss the modulation at the transcriptional and population levels, which reciprocally alters community structure or genome composition for medium-term acclimation or long-term adaptation. Aim: Depression is a chronic recurrent neuropsychiatric disorder associated with inflammation. This study explored the pharmacological activities of Aerva javanica leaves crude extract (Aj.Cr) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depressive-like behavior in experimental mice., Methods: Aj.Cr was evaluated for its phenolic and flavonoid contents, bioactive potential, amino acid profiling and enzyme inhibition assays using different analytical techniques followed by in-silico molecular docking was performed. In addition, three ligands identified in HPLC analysis and standard galantamine were docked to acetyl cholinesterase (AchE) enzyme to assess the ligand interaction along with their binding affinities. In in-vivo analysis, mice were given normal saline (10 mL/kg), imipramine (10 mg/kg) and Aj.Cr (100, 300, and 500 mg/kg) orally for 14-consecutive days. On the 14th day, respective treatment was given 30-minutes before intra-peritoneal administration of (0.83 mg/kg) LPS. Open field, forced swim and tail suspension tests were performed 24-hours after LPS injection, followed by a sucrose preference test 48-hours later. Serum corticosterone levels, as well as levels of nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and catecholamines were determined in brain tissues., Results: In-vitro results revealed that crude extract of Aj.Cr possesses anti-depressant agents with solid antioxidant potential. In-vivo analysis showed that LPS significantly increased depressive-like behavior followed by alteration in serum and tissue biomarkers as compared to normal control (p < 0.001). While imipramine and Aj.Cr (100, 300, and 500 mg/kg) treated groups significantly (p<0.05) improved the depressive-like behavior and biomarkers when compared to the LPS group., Conclusion: The mitigation of LPS-induced depressive-like behavior by Aj.Cr may be linked to the modulation of oxidative stress, neuro-inflammation and catecholamines due to the presence of potent bioactive compounds exerting anti-depressant effects., Competing Interests: The authors disclosed that there is no competing interests in this work., (© 2022 Arshad et al.)

Environmental pollutants present a potential source of toxicity when exposed to humans. The study was aimed at investigating the potential of Oligochaeta ramosa (Roxb.) as a hepatoprotective agent in cadmium-induced hepatotoxicity causing lipid profile disturbance. The aqueous methanolic (30 : 70 v/v ) extract of O. ramosa Roxb. (AME.Or) was subjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis, whereas the antioxidant activity of its constituents was investigated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The hepatoprotective and antihyperlipidemic effects of AME.Or was investigated by dividing animals into five groups (A-E). Animals were either treated with normal saline or CdCl 2 (6.5 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) followed by treatment with silymarin (100 mg/kg), or AME.Or (200 mg/kg) and AME.Or (400 mg/kg) for consecutive three weeks. Blood samples were collected, and the serum lipid profile was assessed on the 11 th and 21 st day of treatment. Histopathological analysis was performed after euthanization. In vitro analysis of AME.Or revealed 64% inhibition as free radicals scavenging potential during DPPH, total phenolic content (TPC) (79.92 mgGAE/g), and total flavonoids content (TFC) (38.75 mgRE/g). The group intoxicated with CdCl 2 showed significantly high ( p ≤ 0.05) levels of the liver function indicators and lipid profile than in the control group. The higher dose of AME.Or (400 mg/kg) significantly decreased the aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin ( p ≤ 0.001), decreased total cholesterol and triglycerides ( p ≤ 0.01) while significantly increased high density lipoprotein (HDL; p ≤ 0.01) as compared to the intoxicated group. The histopathological analysis of the liver revealed signs of necrosis in the intoxicated group, while AME.Or treated groups showed marked improvement. Aim: Liver regulates metabolism of biomolecules and injury of liver causes distortion of metabolic functions. This injury may be oxidative or inflammatory induced by numerous factors including alcohol, pathogens and xenobiotics. This scientific study was planned to investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant potential of p-coumaric acid (p-CA) on Lipopolysaccharide/D-Galactosamine (LPS/D-GalN) induced liver injury., Methods: DPPH analysis, reducing power assay and HPLC analysis were performed during in-vitro studies of p-CA. Similarly, in-vivo experiments were performed using Wistar Albino rats. Normal control and intoxicated group received (5mL/kg normal saline p.o), standard treatment groups received ascorbic acid (100mg/kg p.o) and silymarin (25mg/kg p.o), while p-CA treatment groups received (100mg/kg p.o) for 28-days. After completion of 28-days, LPS/D-GalN injection (300 mg D-GalN/kg and 10 µg LPS/kg i.p.) was given at 6th, 12th and 24-hours to all groups except normal control group. Animals were sacrificed; serum and liver samples were harvested and subjected to biochemical and histological examinations, respectively., Results: The results revealed that p-CA possess strong antioxidant activity. Increased levels of leukocyte infiltration (TLC), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin (TBIL), lipid panel (eg TG, TC, LDL-C, VLDL-C), whereas decreased HDL-C levels noticed in LPS/D-GalN groups as compared to normal control groups. Pro-Inflammatory markers (eg TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β) and lipid peroxidation marker, eg malondialdehyde (MDA) increased while superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were decreased significantly in groups treated with LPS/D-GalN. ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc analysis was used for statistical analysis of. The use of plant-bacterial association is a promising approach for the enhanced remediation of pesticides. Generally, both rhizo- and endosphere bacteria assist their host plants to survive in the contaminated environment. In this work, we have studied the individual and combined effects of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and a previously optimized bispyribac sodium (BS) degrading bacterial consortium (BDAM) on the degradation of BS and plant biomass production. Results showed that the bacterial strains of the BDAM have successfully survived in the plant rhizo-as well as endosphere and enhanced degradation of BS and plant biomass. In soil spiked with 2 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg of BS and was planted and inoculated with BDAM (P&#95;I) showed 100% degradation of BS both in rhizosphere soil and endosphere of the plant. However, during the same period (45 days) the degradation of BS was 96 and 90%, and 93 and 84% in inoculated but un-planted (I&#95;UP) and planted but un-inoculated (P&#95;UI) soils spiked with 2 and 5 mg/kg, respectively. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis of the treated samples showed novel degradation products of BS. Plant-bacterial mutualism has tremendous potential for remediation of herbicide contaminated soils. Generally, bacterial inoculation helps plants to grow well in the contaminated environment. Here, we investigated the impact of bispyribac sodium (BS) degrading bacterial consortium (BDAM) on BS remediation, plant growth promotion and BS accumulation in plant parts. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) was planted in BS spiked soil and inoculated with BDAM. Inoculation showed a beneficial effect on plant biomass production and degradation of BS in the rhizosphere and the rhizosheath. After 40 and 60 days of inoculation, the degradation of BS was more than 96% and approximately 100% respectively in the planted and inoculated soil spiked with 2 and 5 mg kg -1 BS. However, in planted and un-inoculated soil, the degradation of BS was 72% after 60 days of sowing. Furthermore, inoculated bacterial strains colonized both in rhizo- and endosphere of the inoculated plants. In comparison with the un-inoculated soil, significantly less accumulation of BS was found in the roots and shoots of the plants growing in inoculated soil. Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) with their diverse physical and chemical properties have been applied in various biomedical domains. The increasing demand for MNPs has attracted researchers to develop straightforward, inexpensive, simple, and eco-friendly processes for the enhanced production of MNPs. To discover new biomedical applications first requires knowledge of the interactions of MNPs with target cells. This review focuses on plant and microbial synthesis of biological MNPs, their cellular uptake, biocompatibility, any biological consequences such as cytotoxicity, and biomedical applications. We highlighted the involvement of biomolecules in capping and stabilization of MNPs and the effect of physicochemical parameters particularly the pH on the synthesis of MNPs. Recently achieved milestones to understand the role of synthetic biology (SynBiol) in the synthesis of tailored MNPs are also discussed.

Background: Tuberculosis, among human bacterial infections is very important disease of modern world and disease has forensic importance. Extra pulmonary infection is also very common. Histopathology of effected tissue is an important diagnostic modality. Demonstration of mycobacterium tuberculosis in granulomas is necessary for definitive diagnosis of tuberculosis, as many different granulomatous diseases may mimic tuberculosis. Study was conducted to see the positivity of mycobacterium Tuberculosis in tuberculous lymphadenitis and comparative difference in two stains., Methods: A correctional study on tuberculosis was performed in PGMI Lahore in collaboration with pathology department Ayub medical college Abbottabad. Fifty cases of formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue block previously diagnosed as tuberculous lymphadenitis on histopathology were selected. Three-micron thick section were taken and stained with Zn stain and Auramin/ Rhodamin stain. The results were compared; statistical analysis was done using 2×2 table., Results: Out of 33(66%) female and 17 (34%) male patients ranging from 9-80 years 9 (18%) were positive for Mycobacterium Tuberculosis with Zn stain and 21 (42%) were positive in Auramine/ Rhodamine staining procedure., Conclusions: Auramine/ Rhodamine staining procedure was superior to Zn staining method for tissue staining of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.

Background: Soft tissues tumours are tumours of mesenchymal origin excluding epithelial, skeletal tissue, reticuloendothelial system, brain coverings and solid viscera of the body. The objective of this study was to know the histopathological pattern of soft tissues tumours in the Pathology Department of Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan., Methods: This descriptive study was conducted on retrospective data from January 2009 to December 2013. All the soft tissues biopsy specimens were received in 10% formalin, labelled, gross performed, sections processed in alcohol, xylene, wax, block prepared, frozen, microtome sections taken and processed for H&E staining, mounted and reported by a Histopathologist. The inclusion criteria were any sufficient soft tissue tumour biopsy specimen of any age, sex, location in body whereas the exclusion criteria were autolysed biopsy specimen. A minimum of four and maximum of eight sections and 5 micron thick were taken from each specimen., Results: A total of 267 soft tissues tumours biopsy specimens were received in the pathology laboratory with age range of 1-75 years, with mean age of 30.68±17.71 years. Male to female ratio was 1.13:1. Amongst the total, benign tumours were 176 (65.91%). Haemangioma, 73 (27.3%) was the commonest tumours followed by lipomas 41 (15.4%) cases. Amongst the total malignant tumours, i.e., 91 (34.08%), rhabdomyosarcoma, 35 (13.1%) was the commonest tumour followed by angiosarcoma 14 (5.2%) cases., Conclusions: Haemangioma is the commonest benign tumour and rhabdomyosarcoma is the commonest malignant tumour in this study.

The rhesus monkey embryonic stem cell line R366.4 has been identified to differentiate into a number of cell types. However, it has not been well characterized for its response to drugs affecting reproductive endocrinology. Kisspeptins (KPs) are ligands for the GPR-54, which is known to modulate reproductive function. The current study was designed to determine the effect of the KP-10 peptide on R366.4 cells and to investigate the role of KP-GPR54 in the cell proliferation process. Four different doses (0.1, 1, 10, and 100 nM) of KP-10 and control were selected to evaluate cell growth parameters and cellular morphological changes over a 72 hr period. The cells were treated with kisspeptin-10 during the early rosette stage. Proliferation rates, analyzed by flow cytometry and cell count methods, were found to be decreased after treatment. Moreover, the number of rosettes was found to decrease following KP-10 treatments. Morphological changes consisting of neuronal projections were also witnessed. This suggested that KP-10 had an antiproliferative effect on R366.4 cells leading to a differentiation state and morphological changes consistent with neuronal stem cell development. The R366.4 stem cell line differentiates based on kisspeptin signaling and may be used to investigate reproductive cell endocrinology in vitro.

Background: Over past few decades, the expectations of medical students about their academics, extracurricular support from college and about their social life at campus have all been changed greatly. The relative scarcity of data about the expectations of Pakistani medical students has merited this study., Method: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken at Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad at the in December, 2012 based on random sampling technique. Expectation questionnaire of University of Northumbria for Survey of Student Attitudes, Experiences and Expectations was used., Results: One hundred and sixty-two students responded to the questionnaire with 93 (58.1%) males. Students had a fairly realistic picture of academic demands and college environment. There was major difference in the opinions of male and female students about physical environment of college with female having prior misconception about it. Forty-eight percent student found medical education challenging. About 63.3% students had realistic picture about study habits needed in the college. About 77.9% and 73.8% students had reasonable picture of academic staff and teaching methods at the college respectively. Students had a fair picture of the thorough help from teachers. About 63.5% students seemed well-prepared for the extent to which they would need to be independent learners at medical college. However expectations of 55.6% students about non-academic support were higher than provided. Also only 20.3% students found social adjustments easier than expected. About 39.5% students had fairly accurate expectations regarding the physical environment of the college; however in gender based comparison, about 55% female students felt being mistaken about the environment., Conclusion: Academic demands are fairly in accordance with the expectations of students. However there is a need to make course content interesting and more understandable. Also the extracurricular support in form of various facilities should be bolstered. Most importantly, the physical environment needs to be made more amicable especially for female students.

Background: Helicobacter pylori is an important cause of chronic gastritis, gastric ulceration and gastric malignancies as gastric carcinoma and MALT lymphoma. Its definitive diagnosis is based on histopathology. Routine H & E stain is not very effective in its detection, immune-stains and fluorescent stains are costly. Need for simple cheap and sensitive stain has always been a topic of hot debate and extensive research., Method: paraffin embedded blocks of all adult patients diagnosed as chronic gastritis/gastric ulceration with no accompanying gastric pathology as hypertrophic gastropathys, and neoplasias were taken into study. Three sections of 4 micron were cut and stained with routine H & E, Giemsa, and Cresyl fast violet., Results: Total number of patients was 50. Out of these 37 (74%) were males and 13 (26%) were females. Mean age of the patients was 50.4 years. Thirty-four percent (34%) were positive in normal H & E stain, 68% were positive in Giemsa and 76% were positive in Cresyl fast violet., Conclusion: Cresyl fast violet is a good stain for diagnosis ofH. pylori gastritis.

Objective: To evaluate accuracy of modified Kenneth Jones scoring criteria (MKJSC) as a screening tool to diagnose tuberculous meningitis in children., Study Design: Cross-sectional study., Place and Duration of Study: Paediatric Medicine, Unit-I, Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur, from May 2006 to March 2007., Methodology: A total of 100 children admitted through emergency in Paediatric Medicine, Unit-I, were included who were having fever and features suggestive of central nervous system (CNS) infection. Lumbar puncture was done in all patients after written consent. Findings of lumbar puncture were taken as gold standard for the diagnosis of TBM. MKJSC was applied on each patient and accuracy determined against the gold standard., Results: Out of 100 children, 47 were diagnosed as TBM on the basis of CSF results. All children had scored 0-7 or above according to MKJSC. A score 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7 or more was obtained in 23, 25, 30 and 22 children respectively. Children who had scored 5 or more received ATT. Accuracy of MKJSC was calculated to be 91%., Conclusion: MKJSC is a simple and accurate tool to improve tuberculous meningitis case detection rate in children.

Background: Measles is the most common and the most infectious of the viral infections of childhood. It can cause severe pneumonia, diarrhoea, encephalitis, and death. A significant proportion of deaths due to measles in young children worldwide are attributable to low weight for age To compare the measles complications in well-nourished and mal-nourished children, this cross-sectional study was conducted at Paediatric out-patient department and paediatric unit 1 Bahawal Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur., Methods: Total 120 patients were included in the study. All patients presented with signs and symptoms suggestive of measles according to WHO criteria. These patients were divided into well-nourished and malnourished according to the modified Gomez classification. Both groups were evaluated for measles complications like pneumonia, diarrhoea, encephalitis, corneal ulceration, thrombocytopenia, otitis media and myocarditis by detailed history and complete physical examination, and statistically analysed., Results: In the studied patients, 75 were males and 45 were females. Mean age was 23 months. Fifty-nine (49.2%) patients were well-nourished and 61 (50.8%) were undernourished. Fifty-two (43.3%) patients were having pneumonia. Fifty-three (44.2%) patients were having diarrhoea. Twenty-six (21.7%) patients were having encephalitis. Corneal ulceration was found in 9 (7.5%) patients. Thrombocytopenia and otitis media was present in 1 patient in each group. Fourteen patients expired., Conclusion: Measles is a global epidemic problem having many serious complications, including pneumonia, diarrhoea, encephalitis, corneal ulcerations etc. Moreover these complications are more frequent in under nourished children. Efforts should be made to improve the nutritional status of the children and to eradicate this disease by effective vaccination.
