Ecdysterone, one of the insect-metamorphosing steroids isolated from plants (Amaranthaceae: Achyranthes fauriei ), has been recognized to have a suppressive effect on hyperglycemia induced by several hyperglycemic agents. While the administration of ecdysterone did not alter the blood glucose level of normal animals, pretreatment with ecdysterone prior to hyperglycemic agents suppressed the hyperglycemia induced both by glucagon and by anti-insulin serum at only low levels as well. The effect of ecdysterone was also demonstrated using alloxan-diabetic animals. After the administration of ecdysterone to alloxan-diabetic mice, the blood glucose level was reduced to about one-half of the value observed before the administration of ecdysterone. The incorporation of [ 14 C]glucose into protein of normal mouse liver and into glycogen of normal and mildly diabetic mouse liver was stimulated by treatment with ecdysterone.

2β,3β,14α-Trihydroxy-5β-[3α-3H1]cholest-7-en-6-one was incorporated into both β-ecdysone and inokosterone, equally; thus hydroxylation of the side chain of phytoecdysone occurs after formation of the A–B ring system.

A new heliangolide and the known compounds hiyodorilactone F and eucannabinolide have been isolated form Isocarpha oppositifolia var. achyranthes .

Planta perennis rhizomatosa c. 1 m alta. Caulis teres striatus pills antrorsim appressis dense obtectus, parce ramosus. Folia late elliptica, magna, caulina 11-17 x 4.25-7 cm, breviter acuminata basi cuneata, breviter (1-2-5 cm) petiolata, lamina pills leviter appressis vel secus nervos et venas patentibus obsita. Inflorescentiae cylindricae, pedunculatae, in caule et ramis terminales et axillares, terminales usque 4'5 x o08 cm longae et latae, infra medium demum laxiores. Bracteae deltoideo-lanceolatae, 2-2 5 mm longae, membranaceae, costa valida in aristam pungentem excurrente. Bracteolae duae 3'5-4 mm longae, fere aristiformes, apice abrupte uncinata et basi utrinque breviter alata alae membranaceae, superne ? truncatae vel rotundatae.

Flora lists it as growing in "low waste places, ponds, ditches, bayous, and slow streams, Coastal Plain, Fla. to La. and N.C." He adds that "in southern Louisiana this plant is as much of a pest as water hyacinth, often filling up ditches and bayous with a floating mass of growth, usually choking out other plants." This species was first noted in 1935 in Lake Wilson, one of the chain of lakes of the Tennessee Valley Authority. It is now well established in this reservoir and gives promise of becoming a major problem in the breeding of anopheline mosquitoes. Patches of alligator grass were discovered in the Elk River Basin of the Wheeler Reservoir in 1938 and ecesis of this
