The five species described in this article were collected during I9I4 and I9I5. Three of them are from Texas, one is from Florida, and one from Arizona. There are known now to occur in Texas i i species of Ravenelia, including 3 of the new species described in this paper, namely, (i) Ravenelia arizonica Ellis and Ev. on Prosopis juliflora, (2) R. versatilis (Peck) Dietel on Acacia greggii, (3) R. igualica Arthur on Acacia filiculoides, (4) R. texensis Ellis and Gall. on Acuan jamesii and A. acuminata, (5) R. fragrans Long on Mimosa fragrans, (6) R. cassiaecola Atk. on Chamaecrista multipinnata (?), (7) R. longiana Syd. on Cassia roemeriana, (8) R. papillifera Syd. on Cassia lindheimeriana, and the 3 species here described: (9) R. roemerianae on Acacia roemeriana, (io) R. morongiae on Morongia uncinata, and (i i) R. thornberiana on Acacia constricta paucispina. The types of 7 of these species (R. texensis, R. roemerianae, R. thornberiana, R. fragrans, R. longiana, R. papillifera, and R. morongiae) were collected in Texas, while the type locality of the last 4 named is Austin, Texas. Many Mexican species of this genus undoubtedly will be found in southwestern Texas, especially in the territory lying between El Paso and Brownsville along the Rio Grande. R. cassiaecola is reported for the first time west of the Mississippi River, the writer having collected it at Denton, Texas. Two closely related genera, Neoravenelia and Pleoravenelia, are also represented in this state, the former by N. Holwayi (Dietel) Long on Prosopis juliflora, and the latter by P. Hieronymi (Speg.) Long on Vachellia farnesiana. P. epiphylla (Schw.) Long should be found also in the northeastern part of the state, since the writer has recently collected this species in southern Arkansas near the Texas border.

Resumo A Serra de Baturité é um dos maiores remanescentes de Floresta Atlântica localizado em meio ao semiárido brasileiro. A área apresenta uma grande diversidade, sendo considerada de extrema importância biológica para a conservação. Foram realizadas coletas de Leguminosae entre fevereiro/2007 e fevereiro/2009 e a lista de espécies foi complementada com dados das coleções de herbários. As Leguminosae foram representadas por 56 gêneros e 132 espécies. A subfamília Papilionoideae contribuiu com maior riqueza de gêneros e espécies (31 e 58, respectivamente), seguida das subfamílias Mimosoideae (17 gêneros e 41 espécies) e Caesalpinioideae (oito gêneros e 33 espécies). Entre as especies estudadas na área, 55% são árvores e arbustos. Os gêneros mais diversos na área foram: Mimosa L. (15), Senna Mill. (12), Desmodium Desv. (sete) e Chamaecrista Moench, Bauhinia L., Inga Mill. e Aeschynomene L. (seis cada). Abstract The Baturité mountain range is one of the largest remnants of Atlantic forest located in the the Brazilian semi-arid region. The area presents a high diversity, being considered of extreme biological importance for the conservation. The species of family Leguminosae were collected from February/2007 to February/2009 and the species list was complemented with herbarium analysis. The Leguminosae was represented by 56 genera and 132 taxa. The subfamily Papilionoideae contributed with higher richness of genus and species (31 genera and 58 taxa) followed by Mimosoideae (17 genera and 41 taxa) and Caesalpinioideae (eight genera and 33 taxa). Among the species studied in the area, 55% of them are trees and shrubs. The most diverse genera are Mimosa L. (15), Senna Mill. (12), Desmodium Desv. (seven) e Chamaecrista Moench, Bauhinia L., Inga Mill. and Aeschynomene L. (six each).

Nectaries are specialized structures that secrete nectar. Several species of Chamaecrista possess nectaries on the petiole, which have been shown to vary widely in morphology and the chemical nature of their secretion. However, a comprehensive investigation of the nectaries of the clade formed by sect. Chamaecrista, Caliciopsis and Xerocalyx has yet to be performed. Our study aimed to confirm whether or not the leaf glands of species of this clade are in fact nectaries, determine the chemical nature of their secretion and expand the morphoanatomical database on leaf nectaries in Chamaecrista with the intention of contributing to the taxonomy and phylogeny of the genus. Samples from herbarium and field-collected material were subjected to standard methods for light and scanning electron microscopy. Four different forms of nectaries were observed: urceolate, patelliform, verruciform and cupuliform. The nectaries were found to comprise a single-layered epidermis, nectary parenchyma, subnectary parenchyma and vascularization. Polysaccharides, lipids, phenolic compounds and proteins were detected in secretions. Although anatomical similarities were observed among the studied species, their morphology differed. Moreover, the glands are indeed nectaries and are similar to those observed in other species of the genus Chamaecrista. These data hold potential taxonomic usefulness for the studied sections.

A collection of strains isolated from root nodules of Acacia species in Senegal was analysed previously by electrophoresis of total cell protein, auxanographic tests, rRNA-DNA hydridization, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, DNA base composition and DNA-DNA hybridization [de Lajudie, P., Willems, A., Pot, B. & 7 other authors (1994). Int J Syst Bacteriol 44, 715-733]. Strains from Acacia were shown to belong to two groups, Sinorhizobium terangae, and a so-called gel electrophoretic cluster U, which also included some reference strains from Brazil. Further taxonomic characterization of this group using the same techniques plus repetitive extragenic palindromic-PCR and nodulation tests is presented in this paper. Reference strains from Sudan and a number of new rhizobia isolated from nodules of Acacia senegal, Acacia tortilis subsp. raddiana and Prosopis juliflora in Senegal were included. As a result of this polyphasic approach, the creation of a new species, Mesorhizobium plurifarium, is proposed for a genotypically and phenotypically distinct group corresponding to the former cluster U and containing strains isolated from Acacia, Leucaena, Prosopis and Chamaecrista in West Africa (Senegal), East Africa (Sudan) and South America (Brazil). The type strain of Mesorhizobium plurifarium ORS 1032 has been deposited in the LMG collection as LMG 11892.

The genus Chamaecrista Moench has c. 330 species (Lewis et al., in prep.) with the main centre of diversity in the mountains of Eastern and Central Brazil (Irwin & Barneby 1977). In this region, the section Absus accounts for most of the diversity of the genus and recent surveys in different mountainous areas in Eastern Brazil suggest that this group has experienced an explosive radiation. 16 species are recorded for the Serra do Cip6, Minas Gerais (Hervencio 1999), 13 for Grao Mogol, Minas Gerais, (Queiroz et al. in press), 5 for the Pico das Almas, Bahia (Lewis 1995) and 13 for Catole's, Bahia (Concei;ado 2000). During the preparation of a survey of the genus for the Serra do Cip6, a new species was discovered and it is here described and illustrated.

A check-list of the wild, naturalised, and commonly planted species of Cassia (sens. lat.) in Africa is presented, divided into the segregate genera Cassia (sens. strict.), Senna and Chamaecrista as defined by Irwin and Barneby for the New World. New combinations are made where necessary in the segregate genera for the African species. 26 new combinations are made at specific level in Chamaecrista, and 11 in Senna. Additionally, a combination in Senna is made for Cassia divaricata, a south-east Asian species cultivated in the Mascarene Islands.

Review of the history and gross morphology ofChamaecrista, a long controversial segregate fromCassia Linn., reveals behind specious arguments presented in the past a strong theoretical case for generic status; but only in such case that the concept ofChamaecrista be expanded to equivalence with the subgenusLasiorhegma Benth., of which it has been considered a part.

Chamaecrista (sect.Apoucouita)onusta Irwin & Barneby from coastal Bahia andCh. (sect.Absus)hatschbachii Irwin & Barneby from north-central Minas Gerais are described, figured and systematically characterized. Four new combinations inChamaecrista incidental to the discussion are proposed.

Described, figured and discussed are two new species ofChamaecrista sect.Absus from campo rupestre habitats in southeastern Brazil:Ch. axiliflora Irwin & Barneby, of seriesAdenophyllae, from central Bahia, related toCh. adenophylla (Taubert) Irwin & Barneby; andCh. gumminans Irwin & Barneby, of seriesGlutinosae, from central Minas Gerais, related toCh. stilifera Irwin & Barneby.

Chamaecrista (sect.Apoucouita)amabilis is described from the coastal plain of Bahia, Brazil and compared with sympatric kindredCh. duartei andCh. onusta. The new species is illustrated and its diagnostic characters emphasized in a key.
