The size and quality of the melon fruit yield depend on the cultivar, climatic and agronomic factors. A three-year field experiment investigated the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) application and irrigation (IR) on the fruit yield of melon (Cucumis melo L. var. saccharinus Naud.) cultivars. The study was conducted on a certified organic farm located in south-eastern Poland (51.36° N, 22.83° E). The factors of the experiment were as follows: cultivar (Melba, Emir F1, Seledyn F1, Oliwin) and cultivation method (AMF and IR; AMF and non-IR; non-AMF and IR; non-AMF and non-IR as control). The dry matter (%), soluble solid (%), total sugar and reducing sugar (% fresh weight, FM), L-ascorbic acid (mg · 100 g−1 FM), and carotenoid (mg · 100 g−1 FM) contents of the fruit were determined. The highest total and marketable fruit yields were obtained using AMF and IR. Fruit from the AMF series (IR and non-IR) had the most carotenoids (respectively: 801.5 and 788.8 µg · 100 g−1 FM). The fruits of the AMF and IR plants contained the most total sugars (5.98%) and reducing sugars (2.91%) compared to the others. The control plants had the lowest number of marketable fruit, total and marketable fruit yield, and accumulated the least L-ascorbic acid, total sugars and reducing sugars. We suggest that AMF and IR can be recommended as a practical agronomic solutions for the field cultivation of melon under temperate climate conditions.

Fennel fruits (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) represent one of the plant-based natural spices. This study aims to improve the fruit yield and essential oil (EO) quality by reducing the undesirable component, estragole, under different fertilizer treatments. The fertilizers included chemical nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK), and also the organic additive, rabbit manure (RM). For bio-fertilization, plants were inoculated with a mixture of N-fixing bacteria, and P- and K-solubilizing bacteria with/without vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The results showed that fruit and EO yield parameters, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and DPPH scavenging activity of fruit extracts were enhanced by fertilizer treatments in both growing seasons. NPK at 150% of the recommended dose (NPK150) and RM at 60 m3/fed (RM60) recorded the highest values of plant height, umbel number/plant, 100-fruit weight, fruit yield, chlorophyll, carbohydrates, N and P content, EO content, and yield. TPC and TFC were enhanced by using biological fertilizers. DPPH scavenging activity was higher in organically and biologically fertilized fennel. The GC-MS analyses of EO revealed higher contents of the desirable trans-anethole in the organically and chemically fertilized fennel. However, the highest proportion of estragole, the undesirable compound, was recorded for NPK150 and unfertilized plants. On the contrary, increases in the EO content and yield of fennel fruits were achieved by RM along with a reduction in estragole, enhancement in trans-anethole, and increments in other favorable compounds such as fenchone and limonene. In addition, the inhibition of estragole formation was recorded with bio-fertilizers, which also increased the trans-anethole content. Furthermore, the trans-anethole/estragole ratio was significantly higher with the application of organic and bio-fertilization. Hence, organic and bio-fertilizer resources can produce high-quality fennel fruit and EO. The reduction in the use of chemical fertilizers can help to reduce environmental pollution.

This study was carried out to define different drip irrigation approaches on fruit yield and quality parameters of orange (Citrus sinensis cv. Valencia Late) trees during 2014-2016 at the private farm in Güzelyurt, Northern Cyprus. The amount of irrigation water was applied based on the total evaporation amount obtained from the Class A pan (Kcp1:1.25, Kcp2:1.00, Kcp3:0.75 and Kcp4:0.50) and experimental plots were irrigated when the total evaporation of Class A pan was about 35 ± 5 mm. It was determined that irrigation treatments affect yield, weight, length, width and juice of fruit, total soluble sugar, total acidity, pH and vitamin C content except for peel thickness. The average evapotranspiration values were 1343.5 mm for Kcp1, 1135.0 mm for Kcp2, 956.0 mm for Kcp3, and 787.3 mm for Kcp4 irrigation treatments. According to the average data of 2 years, yearly yield for Kcp1, Kcp2, Kcp3, and Kcp4 irrigation levels were 45.0, 47.1, 38.7, and 19.2 t ha-1, respectively. It is determined that Valencia Late can be irrigated by means of the volume of irrigation equivalent to 75% of Class A Pan in Güzelyurt region in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The aim of this work was to evaluate changes in growth and productivity parameters of different precocious hybrids and a naturalized variety of papaya under both greenhouse and field cultivation in a temperate climate (the center of the province of Santa Fe, Argentina). In view of the aforesaid, the purpose of our research was to identify further genotypes better suited for the cultivation of this species in temperate climates and demonstrate the need for the use of semi-controlled systems to make possible the cultivation of these promising genotypes in middle latitudes. The average yield was 291% higher in greenhouse than in the field. The average productivity for hybrid genotypes compared with the naturalized variety more than doubled in both environments. Considering behavior in height, leaf area index and yield parameters, hybrids H2 (principally), and H4 showed a great adaptation for use in semi-forced systems. The use of greenhouse and short stature papaya hybrids allows its feasible and surely profitable cultivation in non- tropical climates.

The practice of intercropping in Rosa roxburghii Tratt orchards holds potential for enhancing fruit yield and financial benefits, yet remains insufficiently explored. To address this, we delved into the effects of intercropping on fruit yield and financial viability of R. roxburghii orchards in Longli County, southern China. Orchards of varying ages (4 years old and 5 years old; 7 years old and 8 years old) were subjected to different treatments: (i) Zea mays and Capsicum annuum intercropping, and clean tillage for younger orchards, and (ii) Lolium perenne, natural grass, and clean tillage for older orchards. Each treatment was assessed for its impact on fruit yield and financial benefits. In younger orchards, intercropping with Z. mays and C. annuum did not significantly elevate fruit yield compared to clean tillage in the 4-year-old orchard; however, C. annuum intercropping significantly improved fruit yield in the 5-year-old orchard. Concurrently, intercropping significantly augmented the total financial benefit by 9234.35–10,486.25 CNY ha−1 (Z. mays) and 14,304.90–16,629.18 CNY ha−1 (C. annuum) compared to clean tillage. In older orchards, L. perenne intercropping significantly elevated fruit yield by 598.84–803.64 kg·ha−1, while natural grass reduced it by 394.61–986.24 kg·ha−1, compared to clean tillage. Additionally, L. perenne intercropping significantly boosted the total financial benefit by 8873.92–9956.56 CNY ha−1, whereas natural grass negatively impacted financial benefits by 78.42–2444.94 CNY ha−1 compared to clean tillage. Collectively, our results illustrate that judicious selection of intercrops, based on orchard age and conditions, can significantly enhance both fruit yield and financial advantages in R. roxburghii orchards. Water scarcity is the main natural limitation for agricultural production in arid and semi-arid regions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of mycorrhizal fungi and salicylic acid on yield and quality of watermelon under water stress. For this purpose, a split factorial experiment was conducted with three replications based on a randomized complete block design in two years. Irrigation treatment at three levels of receiving 100%, 80% and 60% of water requirement were placed as the main factor in the main plots. Mycorrhizal fungus in two levels (including no inoculation and soil inoculation by 20 g m-2 ) along with spraying of salicylic acid in three levels (including 0, 50 and 100 mg L-1 ) were designated to the subplots. The highest amounts of proline concentration, peroxidase and catalase enzymes activities were recorded in 60% irrigation treatment. Electrolyte leakage decreased by salicylic acid application, though in each irrigation treatment the lowest electrolyte leakage was recorded in 100 mg L-1 treatment of salicylic acid. Electrolyte leakage was significantly reduced by mycorrhizal fungi application. The highest (9.12%) and the lowest (8.08%) level of total soluble solids were recorded respectively in 80% and 100% irrigation treatments. The highest amount of TSS (9.07%) was obtained with mycorrhizal fungi. TSS was significantly increased by 6.70% and 11.20% with 50 and 100 mg L-1 salicylic acid treatments, respectively, compared to the control. The lowest fruit yield (34.76 t ha-1 ) was obtained when the plants were exposed to 60% irrigation treatment and no mycorrhizal fungus inoculation conditions. Fruit yield increased significantly in the presence of mycorrhizal fungi inoculation across all irrigation treatment levels, with the highest fruit yield (68.82 t ha-1 ) being obtained when plants were grown under 100% irrigation treatment and mycorrhizal fungi inoculation conditions. It may be concluded that using mycorrhizal fungus as a biofertilizer and salicylic acid as a plant growth regulator can reduce the harmful effects of drought stress and, hence, it can be recommended to increase the fruit yield and quality of watermelon at least in arid-semiarid conditions. Oligochitosan (OC) is effective biostimulant on growth promotion and elicitation against disease infection for plants. However, the range of OC molecular weight that exhibits the most effective activity is not fully understood and requires further investigation. In this study, OCs with different weight average molecular weight (Mw) were prepared by gamma Co-60 irradiation degradation of chitosan in solution and the effect on growth promotion and enhancement of fruit yield of chili plant (Capsicum frutescens L.) by foliar application of OCs particularly with Mw of 7.8, 5.0, and 2.5 kDa was investigated. Chili plants, cultivated in a greenhouse were sprayed with OC concentration of 50 mg/L for three times. Results indicated that among treatments, OC with 2.5 kDa proved to be the best, which increased the shoot fresh weight by 71.5%, shoot dry weight by 184%, total chlorophyll content by 12%, and fruit fresh weight by 49.8% for the control. Thus, OC with low Mw (2.5 kDa) that can be suitably produced on large scale by gamma Co-60 ray irradiation degradation of chitosan solution is potentially promising to apply as a biostimulant to enhance chili fruit yield significantly.

Forty one genotypes of ridge gourd were evaluated in augmented design with three checks. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all the traits. High PCV, GCV, heritability, genetic advance were observed for number of branches at 45 and 90 DAS, nodes up to first pistillate flower appearance, number of fruits per vine, average fruit weight, fruit length, fruit yield per vine, Per cent Disease Index (PDI) for downy mildew at 45, 60 and 75 DAS and fruit fly incidence. Positive and significant association was observed for fruit yield per vine with vine length at 45 and 90 DAS, number of branches at 45 and 90 DAS number of fruits per vine, fruit length. Fruit yield per vine was negative and significantly associated with days to first male flowering, nodes up to first female flowering, days to first harvest, flesh thickness, days to first appearance of downy mildew symptoms and per cent disease index for downy mildew. In open field screening for downy mildew has led to identification of two resistant genotypes (COHRG-9 and COHB-32), two moderately resistant lines (COHB-10 and COHB-40) and one was highly susceptible (COHB-8) whereas remaining genotypes were exhibited moderately susceptible and susceptible reaction to downy mildew in ridge gourd.

The present investigation was conducted to estimate genetic parameters such as genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), heritability and genetic advance (GA) along with correlations and path coefficients from data collected on 52 okra genotypes collected from the IIHR, Bengaluru, India. Analysis of variance indicated significant differences among the genotypes for different morphological characters. High GCV and PCV were observed for yield per plant, no. of fruits per plant, no. of seeds per fruit, where as moderate GCV and PCV was observed for average fruit weight. High heritability coupled with high GAM were observed for almost all the characters studied, except days to 50% flowering and days to 80 % maturity shows low heritability with low GAM. The yield per plant, plant height and number of seeds per fruit showed high genetic advance that helped in effective and reliable selection through these characters for crop improvement. Fruit yield per plant showed positive association with stem girth, number of branches per plant, plant height, first fruit producing node, fruit length, fruit diameter, average fruit weight, number of fruits per plant, number of seeds per fruit and 100 seed weight while, negative association with days to 50% flowering, number of locules per fruit and days to 80 % maturity. The number of fruits per plant had maximum direct effect on fruit yield per plant followed by average fruit weight. Number of branches per plant, plant height and first fruit producing node contributed to fruit yield per plant indirectly via stem girth, average fruit weight, and number of fruits per plant. Hence, number of fruits and average fruit weight are identified as key traits for developing high fruit yielding genotypes of okra for future breeding programme.

Magnetically treated water (MTW) has been used to promote biomass yield in different crops. Tabasco pepper is a high water-demanding crop often cultivated in areas with limited water supply. This study aims to evaluate the effect of MTW on the physiology and biomass yield of Tabasco pepper under water deficit. The experiment consisted of two groups of randomly distributed plants receiving normal water and MTW at two irrigation levels (100 % and 50 % of field capacity, FC) during the whole life cycle under mesh-house. Water was magnetically treated with a commercial irrigation device. Fruit biomass, photosynthesis, water potential, and leaf tissue status were measured. Fruit yield showed a non-significant increase in plants with MTW at both irrigation levels, although large- and medium-sized effects were detected regarding dry weight and fruits per plant (> 16 % increase). Concerning photosynthesis parameters, only quantum yield significantly increased, even though net assimilation and stomatal conductance exhibited a 17 % and 28 % increment, respectively. At 50 % FC, photosynthetic parameters and leaf water potential were severely impaired no matter the treatment used, but surprisingly, relative water content and electrolyte leakage in leaves were not significantly affected. Despite the minor physiological effects of MTW observed in this study, the size effect on fruit yield was noticeable at the end of the experiments. Hence, the application of MTW could help improve water use efficiency in Tabasco pepper in combination with reduced irrigation strategies.

An experiment was conducted to study the correlation of trunk cross sectional area (TCSA) with fruit yield, quality and leaf nutrient status in plum at ICAR-Central Institute for Temperate Horticulture, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir during 2013-14. The TCSA (110.45, 118.23, 123.45, 131.67, 139.25, 146.82, 152.37 and 161.26 cm2) was based on their trunk girth at 15 cm above the ground. Maximum canopy volume (23.14m3 and fruit number 128/ tree) were recorded when TCSA was highest (161.26cm2). Maximum fruit weight (58.85g) was recorded with 123.45cm2 TCSA. Fruit yield and productivity efficiency (59.47kg/ tree and 0.29kg/ cm2) were recorded with 152.37cm2 TCSA. Fruit size (47.45 x 44.12mm), pulp weight (57.54g) and pulp/stone ratio (43.92) were recorded with 123.45cm2 TCSA. Maximum TSS (19.450B), total sugar (13.98%) and reducing sugar (11.46%) were recorded with 161.26 cm2 TCSA. Non-reducing sugar (2.53%) was recorded with 118.23cm2 TCSA. Higher leaf nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content (2.38, 0.19 and 1.95%) was observed with 161.26 cm2 TCSA. A positive and significant correlation was noticed between TCSA and canopy volume (0.995), fruit number (0.992), yield (0.968), pulp/stone ratio (0.903), TSS (0.977), total sugar (0.937), reducing sugar (0.920), non-reducing sugar (0.048), leaf N (0.971), leaf P (0.977) and leaf K (0.997) value in plum variety Santa Rosa under North West Himalayan region of India.

Balochistan produces more than 40% of the total tomato production of Pakistan. The climate of this province is mostly arid, and agriculture around urban areas commonly depends on wastewater irrigation. This study evaluated under groundwater and wastewater irrigation the influence of wood-derived biochar, cow manure and their co-amendment (as 1:1 biochar:manure ratio) at 0.5 kg m−2 (or 5 t ha−1) and 1 kg m−2 (or 10 t ha−1) rate on fruit yield production of tomato, concentration of heavy metals (lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr)), nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of heavy metals (calculated as fruit yield/concentration of a given heavy metal in fruits) and the pH, concentration of mineral nitrogen (N) and soluble inorganic phosphorus (P) of tomato-grown soil. As compared to groundwater irrigation, the biomass and yield production was higher under wastewater irrigation. Organic amendments significantly improved yield production and tended to increase soil pH than control under both irrigation treatments. Wood-derived biochar applied at 1 kg m−2 caused the highest yield under both irrigation treatments. Organic amendments tended to reduce the concentration of Pb, Cu and Cr and increased the NUE of tomato fruits, indicating that fruits require less acquisition of heavy metals per unit yield production. Organic amendments increased the concentration of soluble inorganic P under wastewater irrigation. Our findings suggest that amendment of biochar, manure and their mixture promoted tomato fruit yield under both irrigation treatments, increased NUE of fruits for heavy metals and increased the concentration of soluble P under wastewater irrigation.

Intercropping orchards with cover crops is an important practice for achieving sustainable soil management. However, little research has addressed the development of a soil quality index (SQI) to evaluate cover crop effects on orchard soil quality. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether cover cropping improves soil quality and fruit yield of Goji (Lycium barbarum L.) while reducing or replacing organic fertilizer application. The main treatments were the traditional management of L. barbarum as a monocrop (M) and intercropping Goji with radish (Raphanus sativus L.) as an annual cover crop (I). Within the main treatments, different levels of organic fertilizer were applied at 0 kg·plant−1 (M0), 2 kg·plant−1 (M1), and 4 kg·plant−1 (M2). After six years of planting, we analyzed the changes in soil quality caused by cover cropping with different organic fertilizer levels based on the SQI method. Goji yields were used for validation of the SQI derived from a minimum data set of soil quality indicators. In contrast with traditional monocropping, cover cropping increased soil total nitrogen, available nitrogen, and available phosphorus contents (by 78.60%, 30.30%, and 138.08%, respectively). There were also increased microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents (by 79.01% and 184.01%, respectively), enhanced urease and sucrase activities (by 41.02% and 56.81%, respectively), and reduced bulk density (by 1.92%) in the soil as a result of cover cropping. Compared with IM0 treatment, soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents considerably increased under IM1 treatment, whereas soil available nitrogen and potassium contents as well as electrical conductivity increased under IM2 treatment. The SQI, which varied among treatments in the order IM1 > IM2 > MM2 > MM1 > IM0 > MM0, was positively correlated with Goji yield. From the soil quality and Goji yield perspective, cover cropping with a medium level of organic fertilizer is the optimal soil management practice for the L. barbarum planting system in arid areas of Ningxia, Northwest China.

An outdoor experiment was performed for six months to evaluate the effects of organic fertilizers obtained from marine residual materials on strawberry plants. Three types of organic fertilizers were used, i.e., cod (Gadus morhua) bone powder, common ling (Molva molva) bone powder, and pellets obtained by mixing small cod bone powder and rockweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) residues. A tabletop system for strawberry cultivation was designed, in which two bare-root strawberry plants of cultivar ‘Albion’ were planted in a peat substrate in each pot. Five treatments were applied, i.e., cod bone powder (F1), common ling bone powder (F2), small cod bone powder and rockweed residue pellets (FA), chemical fertilizer (E), and a control (C). The number of leaves and their nutrient content, fruit yield and quality characteristics of the strawberries grown using the organic fertilizers were similar or better than those corresponding to treatments E and C. Organic fertilizers derived from the residues of fish and macroalgae could be a promising alternative to chemical fertilizers in strawberry production.
