367. The Polarization Properties of Sgr A∗ at Submillimeter Wavelengths.

Abstract

We have placed an upper limit on the magnitude of the rotation measure of 7 × 10^5 rad m-2 for the putative Faraday screen (magnetized plasma) in front of Sgr A*, the radio source associated with the black hole in the Galactic Center. There is evidence that the actual rotation measure is about -5 ×105 rad m-2. With a simple model of equipartition of energy and reasonable inner radius for the screen, the accretion rate is estimated to be less than 10-6M⊙yr-1. In addition, we have detected, for the first time, intra-day variability in the polarization of Sgr A*, which may be due to either intrinsic variations in Sgr A* or variations in the composition of the Faraday screen. Abstract

Compound casting was used to achieve the joining of arc sprayed coating to substrate. A layer of coating was deposited on the core by arc spraying, and then molten metal was poured into the mould to achieve the combination between substrate and coating. After solidification, the microstructure, chemical compositions and phase constitutions at the interface were analysed. The results show that in the case of casting aluminium or A356 melt around the aluminium coating, metallurgical bonding is formed at the interface after the oxide layer on the surface of coating is broken. There is no continuous metallic transition at the interface of Al coating/Al (Al/Al), while a transition from substrate to coating is formed at the interface of Al coating/A356 (Al/A356). Two diffusion layers are formed at the interface of Al coating/AZ91 (Al/AZ91), and the layers beside the substrate and coating are composed of Al12Mg17+δ (Mg) and Al3Mg2 respectively. Abstract

The temperature dependence of the Gilbert damping and magnetic anisotropy are investigated in L21 Co2FeAl films epitaxially grown on GaAs (001) substrate by the time resolved magnetooptical Kerr effect. We found that the in-plane biaxial anisotropy increases by more than 90% with the temperature decreasing from 300 K to 80 K, which is mainly due to the strong variation of the magneto-elastic coefficients. In contrast, the intrinsic Gilbert damping rises only about 10%, which is mainly attributed to the reduction of the electron phonon scattering rate, independent of the strain-induced spin-orbit coupling energy. Abstract

Creation of a geological fracture network model conditioned toin situgeometric measurements is of great importance to geoprofessionals, as fractures dominate pathways for fluid flow, a major concern for many engineering applications. This paper introduces and applies the Stochastic Nelder Mead simplex method to automatically calibrate stochastic parameters of geometric characterisations of a discrete fracture network model. This method can overcome the non-convergence of a previous exploratory approach on the classic Nelder Mead method by others, and is an effective substitution to the manual trial-and-error method and is complementary to existing conditional simulation approaches. The procedure to integrate the Stochastic Nelder Mead with a discrete fracture network is presented in detail, and a case study was conducted. Results show that the improved model can better handle the stochastic nature of the underlying system and effectively simulates the observed number and mean trace length of these fractures, although the model results underestimate its standard deviation. Simulated distributions of trace lengths and spacings are within acceptable ranges except for some small offsets, which can be adjusted during model runs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Recurrence is very common if the mucoceles of the anterior lingual salivary glands (ALSGs) are treated by surgery due to its anatomic characteristics. Therefore, more effective and less invasive treatment methods are urgently required to be applied instead of surgery. In this study, 40 patients with the mucocele of the ALSGs received the intralesional injections of pingyangmycin, and the median number of injections per patient was 2.075 (range, 1-3). All cases completely recovered with no recurrence after follow-up of more than 16 months. The complications included the local swelling, pain, and ulceration following injection, and all these symptoms resolved 7-10 days after the injection. Taken together, sclerotherapy with pingyangmycin is an effective and safe treatment method for the mucocele of the ALSGs and may be the primary treatment modality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
