Controlled charge flows are fundamental to many areas of science and technology, serving as carriers of energy and information, as probes of material properties and dynamics1 and as a means of revealing2,3 or even inducing4,5 broken symmetries. Emerging methods for light-based current control5–16 offer particularly promising routes beyond the speed and adaptability limitations of conventional voltage-driven systems. However, optical generation and manipulation of currents at nanometre spatial scales remains a basic challenge and a crucial step towards scalable optoelectronic systems for microelectronics and information science. Here we introduce vectorial optoelectronic metasurfaces in which ultrafast light pulses induce local directional charge flows around symmetry-broken plasmonic nanostructures, with tunable responses and arbitrary patterning down to subdiffractive nanometre scales. Local symmetries and vectorial currents are revealed by polarization-dependent and wavelength-sensitive electrical readout and terahertz (THz) emission, whereas spatially tailored global currents are demonstrated in the direct generation of elusive broadband THz vector beams17. We show that, in graphene, a detailed interplay between electrodynamic, thermodynamic and hydrodynamic degrees of freedom gives rise to rapidly evolving nanoscale driving forces and charge flows under the extremely spatially and temporally localized excitation. These results set the stage for versatile patterning and optical control over nanoscale currents in materials diagnostics, THz spectroscopies, nanomagnetism and ultrafast information processing. Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Previous studies have primarily focused on the transmissibility of multidrug-resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Mtb. However, variations in virulence across Mtb lineages may also account for differences in transmissibility. In Mtb, polyketide synthase (PKS) genes encode large multifunctional proteins which have been shown to be major mycobacterial virulence factors. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the role of PKS mutations in TB transmission and assess its risk and characteristics. Methods: Whole genome sequences (WGSs) data from 3,204 Mtb isolates was collected from 2011 to 2019 in China. Whole genome single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) profiles were used for phylogenetic tree analysis. Putative transmission clusters (≤10 SNPs) were identified. To identify the role of PKS mutations in TB transmission, we compared SNPs in the PKS gene region between "clustered isolates" and "non-clustered isolates" in different lineages. Results: Cluster-associated mutations in ppsA, pks12, and pks13 were identified among different lineage isolates. They were statistically significant among clustered strains, indicating that they may enhance the transmissibility of Mtb. Conclusion: Overall, this study provides new insights into the function of PKS and its localization in M. tuberculosis. The study found that ppsA, pks12, and pks13 may contribute to disease progression and higher transmission of certain strains. Purpose: Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is the leading cause of neonatal functional intestinal obstruction, which has been identified in many familial cases. HSCR, a multifactorial disorder of enteric nervous system (ENS) development, is associated with at least 24 genes and seven chromosomal loci, with RET and EDNRB as its major genes. We present a genetic investigation of familial HSCR to clarify the genotype–phenotype relationship. Methods: We performed whole exome sequencing (WES) on Illumina HiSeq X Ten platform to investigate genetic backgrounds of core family members, and identified the possibly harmful mutation genes. Mutation carriers and pedigree relatives were validated by Sanger sequencing for evaluating the gene penetrance. Results: Four familial cases showed potential disease-relative variants in EDNRB and RET gene, accounting for all detection rate of 57.1%. Three familial cases exhibited strong pathogenic variants as frameshift or missense mutations in EDNRB gene. A novel c.367delinsTT mutation of EDNRB was identified in one family member. The other two EDNRB mutations, c.553G>A in family 2 and c.877delinsTT in family 5, have been reported in previous literatures. The penetrance of EDNRB variants was 33–50% according mutation carries. In family 6, the RET c.1858T>C (C620R) point mutation has previously been reported to cause HSCR, with 28.5% penetrance. Conclusion: We identified a novel EDNRB (deleted C and inserted TT) mutation in this study using WES. Heterozygote variations in EDNRB gene were significantly enriched in three families and RET mutations were identified in one family. In this paper, we reported the synthesis of a new family of thermal stable Ba 3 V 2-x Mn x O 8 blue-green pigment materials based on the [MnO 4 ]3- (V) chromophore. All samples were synthesized by a conventional high-temperature solid state method. Powder X-ray diffraction results showed that the structures of the as-prepared materials were hexagonal crystal system and the space group was R-3m. Infrared and Raman spectra indicated random disorder and structural modification of the pigment. Diffuse reflection spectra were obtained over the range of wavelength 200–1200 nm indicated that the blue-green color of the pigment is caused by optical absorption due to the CT transition in the tetrahedral MnO 4 and the d-d transition of Mn5+ in the yellow-red light region. With the increase of temperature, the color of the pigment basically remains unchanged, showing the good thermal stability. Thus, this paper provides a family of new thermal stable blue-green pigment based on tetrahedral Mn(V) coordination with potential applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the real anchorage performance of basalt and glass hybrid fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) anchors in external corrosive environments. In this paper, a combination of experimental studies and finite element analysis was used. By carrying out pull‐out tests of basalt and glass hybrid FRP anchors under the synergistic effect of freeze–thaw cycles and alkaline environment, the effects of factors such as hole diameter, anchorage length, and mortar strength on their anchorage performance and durability were investigated. Critical corrosion time was introduced to determine the degree of corrosion of the anchor rods. After that, it combined with numerical simulation to reveal the degradation mechanism of the anchorage performance of hybrid anchors. The results showed that the best anchorage performance of basalt/glass hybrid FRP anchors was achieved when the hole diameter was 24 mm, the anchorage length was 175 mm, and the mortar strength was 45.5 MPa. The ultimate pull‐out load was up to 122.16 kN. When the time did not exceed the critical corrosion time, the ultimate load‐carrying capacity of basalt and glass hybrid FRP anchors increased by 9.3% compared to the uncorroded environment. Beyond the critical corrosion time, the ultimate load‐carrying capacity was reduced by 23.3% and the anchorage performance was degraded. In addition, the contact interface between the anchor and the mortar is the weak area of the anchoring structure, which should be focused on in the later design of the actual project. In the livestock production system, the evolution of porcine gut microecology is consistent with the idea of "The Hygiene Hypothesis" in humans. I.e., improved hygiene conditions, reduced exposure to environmental microorganisms in early life, and frequent use of antimicrobial drugs drive immune dysregulation. Meanwhile, the overuse of antibiotics as feed additives for infectious disease prevention and animal growth induces antimicrobial resistance genes in pathogens and spreads related environmental pollutants. It justifies our attempt to review alternatives to antibiotics that can support optimal growth and improve the immunophysiological state of pigs. In the current review, we first described porcine mucosal immunity, followed by discussions of gut microbiota dynamics during the critical weaning period and the impacts brought by antibiotics usage. Evidence of in-feed additives with immuno-modulatory properties highlighting probiotics, prebiotics, and phytobiotics and their cellular and molecular networking are summarized and reviewed. In this paper we are concerned with plane wave discontinuous Galerkin (PWDG) methods for time-harmonic Maxwell equations in three-dimensional anisotropic media, for which the coefficients of the equations are piecewise constant symmetric matrices, where each constant symmetric matrix is defined on a medium (subdomain). By using suitable scaling transformations and coordinate (complex) transformations on every subdomain, the original Maxwell equation in anisotropic media is transformed into a Maxwell equation in isotropic media occupying a union domain of specific subdomains of complex Euclidean space. Based on these transformations, we define anisotropic plane wave basis functions and discretize the considered Maxwell equations by PWDG method with the proposed plane wave basis functions. We derive error estimates of the resulting approximate solutions, and further introduce a practically feasible local hp-refinement algorithm, which substantially improves accuracies of the approximate solutions. Numerical results indicate that the approximate solutions generated by the proposed PWDG methods possess high accuracy for the case of strong discontinuity media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have demonstrated great potential in energy storage devices due to their versatile structures and composite functionalities. However, the application of TMCs in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) suffers from the issues of large volume expansion, polysulfide dissolution, and sluggish kinetics. To overcome these challenges, this work develops nano-flower-like MnS-Co 3 S 4 confined in poly-pyrrole (PPY) carbon nanotube (denoted as MS-CS-PPY) as an excellent anode in PIBs. The nitrogen-doped PPY framework facilitates the interface electron transfer, confines active materials MS-CS effectively, and mitigates the volume change, thus resulting in boosted reaction kinetics and exceptional cycling stability. TMCs induce the surface capacitance and enable the chemical anchoring of the charge/discharge products during the potassium/de-potassium process. Moreover, this work reveals the potassium/de-potassium reaction mechanism, redox kinetics, and solid electrolyte interphase formation of MS-CS-PPY in different electrolytes through theoretical calculations and experimental studies. The solvation ability of electrolytes plays a vital role in manipulating the redox kinetics of the MS-CS-PPY anode material. Background: Ethical issues may pose challenges to nursing students entering clinical practice. Moral sensitivity can assist them in recognising existing moral situations and then taking adequate action. Identifying the variables associated with moral sensitivity may be useful in preparing to improve nursing students' moral sensitivity. Objectives: This study investigated empathy, emotional intelligence, and moral sensitivity in Chinese student nurses to explore the association among these three factors and to verify the mediating function of emotional intelligence in determining the connection between empathy and moral sensitivity. Design: This study used a cross-sectional correlational design. Setting and participants: Through convenience sampling, 239 fourth-year nursing undergraduates at a university in Western China were enrolled in this study. Methods: Nursing students who volunteered to participate in the study completed self-reported scales on empathy, emotional intelligence, and moral sensitivity between September and October 2022. The potential mediating effect was explored using the Process Macro and bootstrap method. Results: The nursing students' average scores were 39.62 ± 5.27 on moral sensitivity, 108.21 ± 15.49 on empathy, and 124.41 ± 13.66 on EI. Moral sensitivity was positively correlated with emotional intelligence (r = 0.454, p < 0.001) and empathy (r = 0.545, p < 0.001). Furthermore, empathy exerted a substantial direct effect on nursing students' moral sensitivity (B = 0.1424, p < 0.001). Emotional intelligence could mediate the indirect path from empathy to moral sensitivity. (B = 0.0372, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Emotional intelligence mediated the association between empathy and moral sensitivity. Thus, educational activities and programmes placing an emphasis on empathy and emotional intelligence may offer an alternative way to promote moral sensitivity in Chinese student nurses. Implications: Nursing educators can organise programmes to improve nursing students' emotional competence and professional values. Early exposure to clinical practice benefits nursing students a lot in terms of building interactions with patients and increasing emotional resonance. The potential risks of vapor intrusion (VI) can arise from low bulk soil contaminant concentration existing in shallow soils beneath a building foundation. To assess VI risks for such a contamination scenario, a comprehensive study was conducted on a factory building located at a trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated site. This study involved the integration of various types of field data, including groundwater, bulk soil, soil gas and indoor air data, along with the utilization of the Vapor Intrusion Screening Level (VISL) calculator. Previously observed high TCE concentrations in soil gas are attributed to accumulation of TCE vapor within the unsaturated soil beneath the building floor, since ground surface is extensively paved at this site. These soil gas data do not directly correlate with the magnitudes of bulk soil and/or groundwater TCE concentration with the linear adsorption model. Soil gas TCE concentration exceeding 107 μg/m³ (or bulk soil concentration exceeding 18.9 mg/kg) observed in shallow soils (at a depth of less than 1 m) may pose health risk to the workers inside the building due to VI, as we have detected TCE vapor concentrations exceeding indoor air screening level several times in the past. This bulk soil TCE concentration, however, falls below soil pollution control standards for TCE, i.e., 60 mg/kg, in Taiwan. As a result, soil remediation is not considered at this site. Soil gas TCE concentrations have reduced to less than 106 μg/m³ after two years of groundwater remediation work at this site. However, we have observed significantly higher soil gas TCE levels at a depth of 0.5 m compared to other depths. This discrepancy raises suspicions that an amount of TCE may still be trapped within the shallow soils that are not reached by groundwater table. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
